Use of Hawke’s Bay walking/cycling trails continues to climb
The popularity of Hawke’s Bay Trails is continuing to climb, with new figures showing a record number of people using the trails for cycling, walking or running. Trail use has increased by 46% in the last three years. Trail counters recorded 22,624 people used the trails in January 2014 compared with 33,107 users in January 2017. The figures also showed a marked boost in those using the TaradalePuketapu loop ride, and along the Clifton-Te Awanga coastal trail. HBRC’s Cycle Network Coordinator Vicki Butterworth says it’s great to see some many locals and visitors taking advantage of the 200+ kilometres of trails around the region. However, she says the recent hot nor’westerly winds continue to dry Hawke’s Bay, with very high fire risk in many areas, including dry grassland along stopbanks and trailside areas of Hawke’s Bay Trails. She wants to remind trail users the current extreme fire risk and total fire ban in effect, which includes all trail and river areas. The off-road lime sand trail by farmland north of Hawke’s Bay airport - Turfrey Road to Onehunga Road - is temporarily closed. The concrete coastal pathway from Westshore to Bay View is the recommended alternative.
Auckland Walk Challenge now open
Need some motivation to get fit? Registrations are now open for the Auckland Walk Challenge, a free event where you ‘virtually’ get to walk the length of New Zealand and compete for a range of prizes. The Auckland Walk Challenge, which runs for the month of March, is designed to encourage more of us to walk – to the shops, to work, the park, to visit friends and to get to know our local neighbourhood. Those registered for the challenge simply enter in their steps or walking activity online each day to make progress from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Walking not only keeps you fit but increases happiness levels and is good for the environment. Choosing to walk instead of driving will also save you money. The Auckland Walk Challenge is open to individuals and teams. Join up now with your family, friends or workmates, log your walks, and see if you can walk the length of New Zealand! Totara Park upgrade ready for Manawatu Walking Festival
Walking tracks in the popular Totara Reserve, Manawatu’s only regional park, have been upgraded. Horizons Regional Council Bill Martyn says it’s pleasing to have the track upgrades of Fern Walk completed in less than a year. Upgrades to the track have included; * 700 metres of new track being created, bringing the track inside the bush boundary and away from the gravel vehicle track shared with the neighbouring farm. * Re-routing of several sections of the track to avoid wet areas or to protect the roots of significant trees. * Replacing the old steps climbing up to the high terrace. Installation of steps at several steep points on the downhill stretch. * The installation of a pedestrian bridge (bridge one), next to the road bridge, which provides a safe passage for walkers by keeping them off the road. * The installation of another pedestrian bridge, (bridge two), which provides a safer route across a steep, slippery gully. * The installation of seven new boardwalks over wet areas and the addition of a hand rail on one of the existing boardwalks. “It’s great that the track upgrades and bridges have been completed in time for the summer season. There will also be many people going through this track during the Manawatu Walking Festival in March this year, which will be an excellent way to showcase the native fauna and flora the Fern Walk has,” says Cr McKellar. “We’re grateful to Manawatu District Council for allowing pedestrian bridge one, to be located immediately upstream of the existing road bridge and within the road reserve. Unfortunately, the desired location for the pedestrian bridge was unsuitable due to the high potential for erosion of the stream banks.” Now that the Fern Walk has been completed Horizons is looking to create a link between all the tracks at Totara Reserve. This would allow people to spend the best part of a day doing a full circuit. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
A new 6.2km coastal path in Denmark, West Australia has officially opened, providing a direct link from Ocean Beach to William Bay National Park for walkers and cyclists. The $700,000 Wilderness Ocean Walk (WOW) Trail was supported by the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program – overseen by Tourism WA – in partnership with the Shire of Denmark and Lotterywest. The path connects Lights Beach, Back Beach and the Denmark Community Windfarm along the spectacular Wilson Head reserve. The 2m wide trail winds through an A-class reserve, providing breathtaking views of Wilson Inlet, Monkey Rock, Ocean Beach (pictured) and surrounding farmland. It also has seating, signage and direct links to the Munda Biddi Trail and Bibbulmun Track. The WOW Trail can be accessed via the Denmark Community Windfarm, Back Beach or Lights Beach. Pedestrians should allow 90 minutes and cyclists 40 minutes to complete the trail one-way.
Tourists coming back to Nepal
Nepal tourism is finally dusting itself off following the 2015 earthquake disaster. Tempo Holidays product manager Lindsay Cowan says tourists are returning as the country overcomes the disaster and gets back on its feet. Cowan adds the rising popularity comes at a time Nepal was recognised by Lonely Planet as being the top best-value destination. Addressing the trend, Tempo Holidays has independent and escorted journeys throughout Nepal, which is home to eight of the world’s ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest. Among them, Glimpse of Nepal is an independent package enabling travellers to take their time with what they choose to do. It includes the medieval town of Bhaktapur, Pokhara and Bandipur. It moves on to Chitwan National Park before travelling to Nuwakot and then heading back to Kathmandu. The 10-day package starts from $2250 per person Walking New Zealand, issue no 231 - 2017

Tainui Heritage Walk
T
ainui Heritage Walk is through a gully and hill-slope reserve located near the southern edge of Havelock North suburban area in the Hawkes Bay. A network of well-formed tracks follows easy gradients, but there are some steeper corners. This area is mostly under the canopy of trees, the shading especially welcome in summer. It is a good place to ‘lose yourself’ and ‘get away’. The Reserve is a gem. Walking shoes and a hiking pole are recommended. History R e s e r ve d f r o m e a r l y d a y s o f subdivision the area was not really appreciated until the 1980s when a start was made to remove accumulated garden rubbish and other debris. In 1993 Havelock North Rotary Club established Heritage Trails. Adjacent neighbours, with Hastings District Council, continue with improvements and plantings.
A mixture of introduced trees, native species, and garden escapes make an inspection of the reserve a good test for any person interested in plants. Look for different forms of pinus radiata, cupressus macrocarpa, and pseudosuga taxifolia (douglas fir ); identify the natives such as mahoe, karaka, rangiora, kawakawa, etc; and tolerate cotoneaster, fig, loquat, cape gooseberry, smilex and blackberry. Birds too are a mixture of native and introduced. Look for fantails and dunnock (hedge sparrow); listen for tui and song thrush. Cultural interests near Hikanui Drive entrance include earth works of an early Maori pa site. Modern housing developments on the next ridge are an abrupt contrast. Concrete water reservoirs serve both Hastings and Havelock North with water pumped from Heretaunga Plains’ aquifer. Access is from four points, all with
adequate parking: •Top access is from Hikanui Drive. •Middle access (recommended) is from Tainui Drive. •Bottom access is from Keirunga Road. •Keith Sands Grove. (The easiest to find quickly, but not the most convenient for ready access to the gully). From the central roundabout in the Village, proceed up Joll Road to the intersection with Tanner Street. Ahead is Keith Sands Grove. A flat and grassed ■ terrace beside Mangarau Stream forms a recreation area with easy flat walking and picnic facilities. At t h e f a r e n d i s Keirunga Road access to the gully reserve.

It turns out we weren’t. Settled weather, clear skies, fresh snow sparkling on the Alps, no crowds, no sandflies - what wasn’t to like about riding the new West Coast Wilderness Trail in mid-July? Sure, it was a tad frosty, but we were out there exercising, keeping warm, and at night there were the cosy pubs where we could share the fire with friendly Coasters. The new cycle trail is fast gaining popularity, says Wilderness Trail Shuttle owner, environment restoration

volunteer and absolute trail enthusiast, Chris Steel. “The extractive industries on the Coast have gone. What’s happening now is a big tourism rethink and an increasing amount of that is focused around biking. “We have groups coming from Auckland, Tauranga, Canterbury and from overseas. Some are doing day trips, based from one place, and some are riding the whole 130kms then turning round and riding back to the start.” After just an hour on the trail it’s easy to see why it’s already so popular. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

The landscape has that ‘wow’ factor; mountain backdrops (including Aoraki/ Mt Cook when the cloud lifts), wild coastline, pristine rainforest, and so much heritage; an old tramline here, a water race there, built during early mining and milling days that make beautiful riding gradients. Anyone can bike the trail, says Chris. “The surface is great, there’s enough gentle climbing to be challenging at the same time there’s no part that can’t be ridden on an electric bike, that’s an option some people are choosing.” Two of us drove across from Christchurch, although we could have caught the Tranz Alpine train. We thought about lunching at Monteiths Brewery, in Greymouth – instead we www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
chatted over crusty bread and housemade dips with Allan and Olivia Monk and their Dad Bernie at the Paroa Hotel, which has been in the Monk family for three generations. Our smart rental bikes were delivered by Greymouth’s Mann Cycles, and we pedalled away from the coast, safely across the new bike extension on the Taramakau Bridge and onto the Kumara Tramway, our wheels rolling where horse-drawn trams once carted merchandise from Kumara, scene of New Zealand’s last great gold rush. The cycle trail is the new gold for Kerrie and Mark Fitzgibbon, who invested hugely to restore an old Kumara pub, the Theatre Royal, essentially to cater for biking groups. They’ve won
awards for their work, introduced a classy yet wholesome menu, and captured the support of the locals for the community events and convivial hospitality they offer. Happily our arrival coincided with their legendary $10 roast night, and we were joined by the entire population of Kumara, it seemed. Our cyclist guests come from all walks of life, they love meeting the locals and the locals love meeting them, smiled Kerrie. “We’ve had some lovely exchanges, like locals inviting a guest home to meet their family, or help feed

A winter ride on the West Coast Wilderness Trail their pet lamb.” Day two, with roast pork and salad sandwiches on board compliments of Kerrie, we set off for the hinterland. As in the foothills of the Alps that reflected their snowy tops in lakes and reservoirs as we rode by, crossing boardwalks and traversing wetlands. Towering rainforest followed; the tui calls so resonant we pondered if there were indeed a couple of apparently extinct South Island kokako still hiding out here. A free-wheeling descent across open farmland then down the broad Arahura river flats brought us to beautiful glacial lake, Kaniere, then the Kaniere Water Race. Following the forest-lined
boardwalks, bridges, twists and turns alongside this surging water race was a thrilling finale for the day two. Chris met us and drove us into Hokitika. OK, we could have ridden the last few kilometres on the road but we’d had a big and stunning day, and this is all part of the service Chris offers – to make sure his riders enjoy the best bits. Our Hokitika hotel overlooked the ocean; toasty warm inside, raging surf outside. Another pub, another fireplace, more friendly locals to chat with. Sometimes it’s just good to be a ‘tourist’ in your own country. Day three of the cycle trail was a mix – some road sections but mostly stunning heritage and scenic riding. A highlight was the Mananui Track

through Mahinapua Scenic Reserve. First, we crossed a boardwalk over inky black wetlands studded with flax and lofty kahikatea, the latter thriving with their ‘wet feet’ as our tallest native tree is wont to do. Then we continued into the reserve on the former Mananui Tramline, riding four cruisy kilometres through pristine forest that somehow survived the sawmill that operated near here in 1885. If your preference is to bike just sections of the cycle trail, then be sure to include this one. The grand finale followed the former Hokitika/Ross railway line. This heads south just inland from the coast, through wetlands and recently replanted areas, the result of volunteer restoration efforts by local Cycle Trail supporters. It also heads dead straight for 13km so we were happy the wind was behind us. Small bridges crossed lagoons and finally we rode the grand, old Totara River Rail Bridge. Or should that be bike bridge – it had fallen derelict since last crossed by a train, in 1980, and has now been restored to bike-safe standard, at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars, to complete the final cycle trail section into Ross. Here, Chris was once again on hand, this time to return us to Hokitika www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

and the Regent Theatre, not for the movies but for pies for lunch. Believe m e , G a yl e n e Stapleton’s famous pies at the theatre café are worth riding the entire Wilderness Trail for.

he previous Waitakere City Council has spent a great deal of ratepayers’ money on providing walkways and cycle-ways throughout the district. It was heartening to see people make the most of them as we walked alongside the Creek. Hopefully the “International Walkway of Trees” section will become a wonderful legacy as many of the trees were gifted and planted for future generations by representatives of the ethnic communities living in Waitakere City as
at October 2000. We did enjoy our 4.5km walk - the sun was shining, the birds were singing, we were sheltered from the cool breeze and this was a part of Auckland that was new to us. To top it all off, we had a delicious coffee at The Falls Restaurant - sitting outside in the sunny courtyard. Henderson Creek was once a hive of activity for traders, vintners, farmers, orchardists and families, and the area was also known for its timber milling industry. Explore a spectacular trail on foot
The Taieri Gorge Rail Walk J
ust once a year you can experience a walk on foot like no other with the Taieri Gorge Rail Walk. This year the walk will take place on Sunday 7 May. Linking coastal Dunedin and the dry hinterland of Middlemarch, the remote Taieri Gorge features tunnels and viaducts that you usually can see only from an excursion train. The annual Dunedin South Lions Club charity fundraiser will get you much closer. Sturdy shoes, a torch and moderate fitness will have you walking through a number of tunnels and over viaducts, admiring the engineering feats achieved by men with very little machinery. The walk itself is flat, however it is very tiring and careful walking is required. The railway ballast, narrow cuttings and deep ravines all add challenges. The walk is not suitable for young children. The train’s historic carriages clickityclack their way from Dunedin Railway Station across the Taieri Plains and up the winding gorge above the Taieri River. Walkers will disembark at Flat Stream for the 8km walk (a couple of hours) back to Machine Creek where they will meet up with the train. Another stop is made at Hindon where the Lions Club members provide a free sausage sizzle. There is plenty to see on the walk and
from the train – you might even spot a fault line. The dramatic scenery makes a perfect backdrop for some stunning photographs. Supporting the community Assisting the Lions Club is Presbyterian Support Otago, which is raising funds for the purchase of a new van. The van will be regularly used by the Buddy Programme and other youth development initiatives. The Buddy Programme pairs children in need of a little extra support with a caring, responsible adult for weekly catch ups. The pairs share experiences, outings and simple activities that help young buddies build their self-confidence and make positive choices for themselves. There are up to 80 active Buddy pairs in the Dunedin/Mosgiel area with another 40 children currently waiting to be matched with an adult buddy. The purchase of a new van will allow Presbyterian Support Otago to make sure vulnerable children can regularly participate in a wide range of healthy, engaging and fun-filled activities and outings that they wouldn’t normally be able to get to. Book your ticket today The rail walk is such a well known and anticipated event that the tickets sell fast. You are encouraged to visit dunedinrailways.co.nz/events and book your place today.
The train will depart from Dunedin at 8.30am on Sunday 7 May and returns at 3pm. Light refreshments will be available from the buffet car and you should take water and snacks for the walk itself. Clothing layers and light wet-weather gear is advised and can be left on the train if not required for the walk.

Minister visits ambitious
Kerikeri walkway project
A
new trail that will provide access to a hidden waterfall near Kerikeri received a Ministerial visit recently when the New Zealand Walking Access Commission hosted Associate Minister for Primary Industries Louise Upston for a guided walk. The visit was organised to celebrate the work being undertaken by Kerikeri Rotary, Vision Kerik-
eri, Friends of Wairoa Stream and others in the community to create lasting public access to Te Wairere Waterfall. The new 2km Wairoa Stream Walking Track, which is under development, will provide access from Kerikeri’s Pa Road footbridge to the waterfall. Te Wairere Waterfall was once popular, but has become difficult to access in recent decades as a result of

the subdivision of land and the regrowth of forest alongside the Wairoa Stream’s banks. Much of the track to the waterfall is complete and work is now underway to construct a 12-metrelong bridge across the Wairoa Stream to complete the project. Ms Upston walked the track with representatives of groups involved in its development, and met with adjoining landholders who have generously provided access across their land for the track. The New Zealand Walking Access Commission is the Crown entity that plays a lead role in promoting free, certain, enduring and practical access to the outdoors.
New Zealand Walking Access Commission chief executive Eric Pyle welcomed the Minister’s interest in community trail development initiatives and public access to the outdoors. “This visit provided an opportunity for the Minister to see some of the fantastic trail development work being done by community groups in Northland, in partnership with local iwi and landholders. The Wairoa Stream Track is a great example of the work being done across the country to develop new public access for current and future generations.” The bridge over Wairoa Stream is expected to be complete in April, if weather allows, and the track to Te Wairere Falls will open shortly afterwards. The Great Lake Walk/ Cycleway, Taupo
T
By Judy Eva
he Great Lake Walk/Cycleway is a a fantastic walk/cycle path that consists of grey brick paving changing to concrete further along. It starts at the Lake Taupo Yacht Club (large parking area) on Lake Terrace Road which used to be Highway 1. It gives fantastic views of the lake as
it winds its way along the edge passing through Two Mile, Three Mile and Four Mile Bay to Five Mile Bay a distance of approximately 11 kilometres, twenty two return. Picnic and swimming spots can be found along the way with plenty of seats where you can stop for a breather and take in the fabulous views. There

is a toilet in each bay along with plenty of parking for cars and motor homes. A children’s playground and barbecue facility at Wharewaka Point not far past Four Mile Bay is very popular. Not far from the beginning of the walk there is a small hot thermal stream that trickles into the lake edge under a small bridge (signposted with a warning) the path then carries on past holiday homes and motels, then changes to mostly parks, reserves and marinas further along. The scenery from one end of the walk to the other is diverse and one can only admire how it changes so frequently. At the large Five Mile Bay parking area there are usually many motor homes where it is permitted to stay for several days. Follow the path past the motor homes for a further maybe kilometre where it passes in front of more holiday homes then onto a sandy track (not suitable for mobility scooters or pushchairs), that in itself is a pleasant walk/bike under Above: Changing scenery among the palms. shady and dried skeletal trees. It eventually leads out onto the main road south. Care is needed at this exit as it is a main highway and speeding traffic. To return to the beginning of the walk take the walkway back again. This walk is suitable for everyone including mobility scooters, pushchairs, dogs on leashes and bikes. In all it is a colourful, interesting pleasant experience and also a photographer’s paradise pretty in all seasons. The walk is graded easy and time return depending on your pace between two and three hours. Bike time depending on speed approximately 30 minutes to an hour. Add on time to that if you stop to take photographs. As this is a shared path take care and look out for other users. Above left: Shags preening after being in the lake. My Favourite Walk
Tirimoana Walkway, Kate Valley
T
By Yvonne van Eerden
ower Trampers regularly do Tirimoana walk, always great during the year other than August/September when it is closed for lambing. Tirimoana is fun for all the family. We soon leave the carpark where it is rather windy (always catches the wind) but a good day. There had obviously been a good lot of rain recently as everything was really green for late October. We stopped for morning tea at the
lookout (nine of us today). It is nice to chat and take in the fresh air and the surrounding landscape. Sometimes it is nice just to sit and look. The views were crystal clear and the temperature was nice and warm. We welcomed the sea breeze. We had a few gates to climb through and had a good laugh at each other especially with our pack on and our sticks to get through as well. The track goes down to the beach which is a good place for lunch but on the way a creek to cross which is always

a good challenge and we all help each other. The landscape is spectacular, shear cliffs which are scarred and high with a rocky and sandy beach. The sea looked very inviting for a swim but not today as we did not bring our swimming gear!! We did not expect to see anyone else around but quite far in the distance you could see a couple of Above left: The track over farmland. Above right: Helping the group over a stream. people walking. It is always nice to get a view towards Pe g a s u s B a y a n d Christchurch. We picked a spot for lunch which was not under the shear cliffs (I have always designated myself as health and safety officer of the club and do not like sitting under large boulders or shear cliffs especially after the Christchurch quakes). We carried on down the beach until we were clear of the high scarred cliffs to have lunch. (The following month 14 November we had the Kaikoura quakes). We continued on our walk enjoying the scenery and there was a look out of Pegasus Bay on the way back which was worth walking to, only a couple of minutes from the main track and a good seated area for the ones who did not want to go. Always a great walk as you can go any way around and not too far from Christchurch.

Walking through the Can By Andrea Livingston
F
or nearly 26 years specialist walk-tour company Wild Quest has been guiding Kiwi seniors around some of the most magnificent back country and outdoor hot spots in the South West of the USA. I was fortunate to tag along on their very last Canyonlands Tour in 2016. Company owner and Guide Erskine Sandilands is due to hang up his hat on this ambitious and finely honed trip. Drawing on his years of personal wandering and trail discovery amongst these vast and attractive landscapes, he said “this is the best Canyonlands itinerary I have ever done. I will be first to say yes indeed it is. Having helped Erskine facilitate his tours for the past nine years I am familiar with his style and drive for excellence. I get to talk to his clients on the phone, book their flights and administer Insurance and personal travel extensions. As I pack my bag I feel I have done this all before but without the photos and souvenirs! A rule I made was to not pre-empt anything, not to research the National Parks, or hotels we were to stay nor worry about the food, or fuss over Right: the famous Chimney Stack. Below: Taking a jump!

Walking through the Canyonlands of USA how long the walks might be. But to just come on-board with absolutely no expectations, ready to be wowed and open to the ‘newness’ and excitement of discovery with walking new lands. As a tour guide and travel company owner with an eagle-eye for detail perhaps Erskine could have been under some pressure in having me along. Viewing each day from different hats – guiding, marketing and as a tour member experiencing things for the first time I was in for quite a reward! Arriving in Los Angeles on a warm balmy evening to stroll the beach and boardwalk to shake out the wrinkles of a 12 hour flight and then enjoying a convivial evening meeting and chatting with fellow travellers, the scene was set for a wonderful adventure. The tour is 25 days long. It sounds a tough ask, but for lovers of daily walks, balmy dry air, moderate temperatures, Autumn colours, fewer tourist numbers and epic desert and canyon landscapes to wander amongst there wasn’t anything tough about it! I was staggered how the relaxed touring hours, variation of moderately graded walks and mix of free time kept everything so balanced. After 25 days, most of us mused we could continue walking for another month! Every single day offered up something unusual and different. An enormous variety of walks in state and national parks each with their exotic landscapes and vastness, teeming with unusual plants and wildlife. Embracing the best trails of California Arizona Utah and Nevada, yes this was the perfect itinerary for walking enthusiasts! The California hinterland was first with a stop in Palm Springs, San Jacinto and its 8,000ft views! Joshua Tree National Park presented us with our first desert environment to walk and rock hop. Then cactus spotting and naming became a ‘thing’ as we moved toward Tuscon and the rich redrock landscapes of Arizona. The giant saguaro cactus dominated horizons and had us mesmerised with

ideas and insights to the Wild West and all the hardships that would present in such harsh environments. John Wayne movie buffs will love it! There is much to learn about desert life and the critters that dwell within. A day walking the vast Sonora Desert Museum was time well spent and what treasures we found. After some excellent trail walks many tour members took advantage of a heli flight over the Burnt and vibrant red rock monoliths surrounding the township of Sedona (the Queenstown of Arizona). A visit to the stunning cliff dwellings of the early native North American In-
dians and walking amongst small cavehomes peppering the walls of Walnut Canyon was a fascinating day. Waking up on the South Rim of the famous Grand Canyon was also something to behold. I never understood the obsession with this place until standing there drinking in the enormity and depth of every direction. I changed school on the spot and now say ‘OK, I get it’. Simply breath taking. A free day presented opportunities for several short enjoyable strolls or more taxing ascents down to the Colorado River far below. As we moved toward the Canyons and Mesa’s of Utah the more prevalent

the animals. Chipmunk, squirrel, mountain Lion, coyote, elk, deer. All being admired in the wild. Monument Valley with its ‘mittens’ (monoliths shaped like gloves) was captivating and we enjoyed a 6km walk amongst them with not one other tourist. First Nations Reservation Land surrounded us and their native history was much talked about, with the interpretation centre helping us make sense of the struggles. The area has long roads emulating Route 66 which made us feel young again. Heading north we see red arches begin to appear on the horizon, these eroded and wind sculpted mountain holes provided the most fantastic photo opportunities. Now in Utah’s famous 5: Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Bryce National Park, Zion National Park. Each vastly different from the last, we see Slick Rock in Moab, enormous red archways’ creating windows to frame the sunsets and valleys. We walk dwarfed by canyon walls so high the squawk of crows are magnified

tenfold and discover a park of ‘goblins’ which had us very amused as we walked amongst the movie-set creations of nature. A valley of coloured rock-spires made a unique labyrinth of trails to explore, a winding wonderland of red earth and the Virgin River carved long ‘narrows’ of water through rock in which to wander ankle deep while sandwiched by enormous towering rock walls. Beautiful autumn colours amidst ancient orchards and old farm settlements were showing off petroglyphs in the afternoon sun. So much diversity in one State. Nevada did not disappoint, after all they have their jewel in the desert crown with the city of Las Vegas. However, before drowning in glitz and glamour, we visited the Hoover Dam which was a juxtaposition of manmade monuments after our large collection of nature walks and was strangely amazing. Perhaps this softened us to the bright lights of the desert city where we were entertained on many levels – never

ending sidewalk shows, theatre shows, people watching, fountain watching and general nightlife casino amusements. Just an overnight in Vegas with an early getaway to walk in the sanctum of the Getty Museum and its beautiful and artful grounds overlooking Beverley Hills and downtown LA. The warm smouldering evening sun was befitting on the close of our magnificent walking tour. Not a day without a Wow! No super early mornings, no maddening crowds, no rain or stress. Only an endless supply of pleasant enjoyable walks every single day. With quality accommodation, a super comfortable coach for the long parts,
daily sandwich picnic lunches and a bunch of fun-seeking Kiwi seniors this made for one perfect adventure, one perfect itinerary. New track links Wairara
For many years there has been a desire to open up a track linking Wairarapa on the east coast of the North Island through the Tararua Ranges to Manawatu on the west coast. Now it has been done. The track is some 25 kms south of the existing Manawatu Gorge Track, It is some years since the Wednesday Wilderness Wanderers a group within the Manawatu Tramping and Ski Club have made a crossing of the ranges and the first time that the group has made a crossing so close to Palmerston North. Here is the story by Bob Hodgson, with photos by Maureen, Judith, Bob and William. For some time a group of volunteers led by the indomitable Ian Argyle, have been working on a track linking NaeNae Road, an unsealed road reached from the Tutaekara Road in the Wairarapa, with the recently opened Otangane (Nipple)

and Sledge Track. In part the new track follows a paper road and makes an interesting East-West crossing possible, see GPS plot and map on this page and page 40. So it was, that under the direction of

trip leader Bev, thirty plus trampers assembled at the Summerhill car park and then travelled in convoy over the ranges to NaeNae Road. Here we liaised with Ian Argyle to be briefed on the challenges to meet on the new NaeNae Track. At about 1.5km in length and a height gain of a little under 400m, he predicted that it would be slow going and in places very muddy. He was correct on both counts with all trampers taking at least an hour to reach the junction with the existing tracks. We were lucky to have a dry day af-

ter several wet days, in wet conditions the route would be very challenging especially the sections where vandals have recently damaged the track by removing steps. At the junction the faster group turned left to include Otangane in their tramp and the rest turned right following the track plot below. Both tracks and groups converged on the Hardings Park Toetoe junction with its picnic table and signboard, then to follow the Sledge track back to the Black Bridge and carpark. With a 9am start some were out by 2pm and all by 2.45pm. Maureen, one of our regular trampers subsequently emailed “What a great experience! Thanks to everyone that made it such a great day.” This remark nicely encapsulated the day and the mood subsequently rounded out by coffee and cakes at the Rendezvous Cafe at Summerhill. Thanks to Trip Leader Bev and the drivers who dropped us off at NaeNae

Road and picked us up at the Sledge Track car park. To Ian Argyle for his briefing and track work with his volunteers.
Fact file
Track length: The total length of the track is about 12km, which includes 1.5km of the Nae Nae Road section on the east coast side, the Otangane Track and the Sledge Track. There is signage planned at the NaeNae end to go with an existing DOC sign. The Nae Nae Road section is still under construction. How to get there: From the west coast side drive to Sledge Track by following Kahuterawa Valley Road to where the Sledge Track and Back Track start, about 18km from Palmerston North. From the east coast side at the intersection of Nikau Road and Tutaekara Road drive along Kopikopiko Road and then on to Naenae Road, a distance of about 10km. The driving distance is about 25km from Palmerston North.
