Explore the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada regions in Spain

In the coming season, Casa Ana, a gem of a B&B, is offering a selection of great holidays in this wild and beautiful part of Spain. Walking over Lemons is a week of walking with Chris Stewart, author of best-selling Driving Over Lemons. He’ll take you on his favourite walks, invite you to lunch at his farm, and entertain you with stories about life in the Alpujarra. The walks range from a gentle stroll around the white villages and the country footpaths linking them; to a day in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada; and include walking in the Poqueira and Trevelez river valleys, plus a guided day in Granada exploring the city’s medieval sights. Walking and Nature visits the Sierra Nevada and its southern slopes which are fantastically rich in wildlife, mainly due to large altitude differences ranging from 500m in the lower market towns of the Alpujarras through to the high summits at nearly 3500m. Expert guides will take you on five days of walking at a range of altitudes to see the wonders of the mountain and valley wildlife, including eagles, vultures, ibex, and many of the endemic bird, wildflower and butterfly species, all in spectacular scenery. Walking with a Camera enables you to discover the rugged beauty of the Spanish Sierra Nevada through a lens. Highlights include learning how to shoot big landscapes whilst exploring the ancient Moorish footpaths, mule tracks and silk routes of the Alpujarras; a day exploring medieval Islamic architecture in the historic city of Granada; discovering the secrets of successful sunrise and sunset photography in the mountains; and visits to the bars and bodegas of the area’s famous white mountain villages. For further details contact Anne Hunt at info@casa-ana.com or visit the Casa Ana website.

Point Chevalier cycling improvements planned

New cycling and walking facilities are on the agenda for the area around Pt Chevalier and Westmere in Auckland. Auckland Transport is looking for community feedback to develop a more detailed plan and consultation is now open. The project will see safe cycling facilities for Point Chevalier Road, Meola Road and Garnet Road. There will be layout changes to key intersections to improve safety and better manage traffic. A new pedestrian crossing and improvements to an existing crossing are also being proposed. The improvements will be funded by Auckland Transport, the NZ Transport Agency, and the NZ Government’s Urban Cycleways Fund.

Te Araroa art in the Wellington Botanic Gardens

The Te Araroa Wellington Trust, with the assistance of Wellington City Council and generous support from Wellington North Rotary and Wellington Community Trust, has installed two walking figures at the Bowen St entrance to the Wellington Botanic Gardens. The installation was designed by Isobel Gabites, who also produced the signage on the Paekakariki Escarpment Track. The eye-catching figures were unveiled by Mayor Justin Lester, who clearly has a soft spot for Te Araroa, celebrating his election last year with a walk on the Paekakariki Escarpment Track. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

We are a women’s hiking group on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Our members are age 55-70 years and we do a 12 - 15 km hike once or twice a week. We know over 50 very scenic hiking trails in our area. We would like to organize a hiking exchange with a similar hiking group in New Zealand for 2018. Our idea is that we would billet 10 - 15 women from a New Zealand hiking group for about 2 weeks in 2018 - and guide them on about 10 unique hikes on our west coast. And they would do the same for us in New Zealand. Would you be able to put us in contact with a group/s who might be interested in such an exchange? We would appreciate any assistance you could give me. Thank you very much. Contact: Effie Henry, Cowichan Bay, BC, Canada, 250-7480574, effieahenry@gmail.com.

The Wales Coast Path (link is external) is the world’s only coastal path to span the entire length of a country. There are 870 glorious miles to explore, with plenty to see whether on a quick stroll, a day walk or a longer hike.

Go your own way: Fremantle self-guided walks

Walking or cycling around Fremantle in West Australia, is an ideal way to delve a little deeper into the port city’s history, art and culture. In addition to creative, heritage and multicultural highlights – and even a wet-weather option – Fremantle Story has added street art and literary trails to its suggested itineraries for exploring on foot or two wheels. Also look out for the forthcoming vintage shopping trail, part of a packed program for the 25th Fremantle Heritage Festival from May 26 to June 5. Walking New Zealand, issue no 233 - 2017

Lake Okareka wetland and board walk

By Judy Eva

Lake Okareka is approximately 9 kms from Rotorua and is different from other lakes in the district for the fact that it is surrounded by farmland in a picturesque setting of hills and native forest. One side of the lake is wetland with a well maintained track and boardwalks. It wends its way through a marshland of raupo, rushes, toi toi, flax and a variety of native bush and there is a wide range of freshwater aquatic birds living in the lake and on the wetlands such as dabchicks, coots, pied stilt, pukeko, shags,

ducks, and geese. For those who are avid watchers there is a ‘bird hide’ in the middle of the wetland. There are introduced species of fish in the lake such as goldfish, mosquito fish, and rainbow trout. The other side of the track is hilly

farmland and it is quite picturesque to observe the wetland birds among the livestock in the paddocks picking happily at the grasses and seeds. I have on good advice that a very special time to do this walk is when the baby birds are around but watch out for the geese as they are very protective of their young. This is a very pleasant flat walk and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs as far as Silver Beach and where the outlet flows into Lake Tarawera. There is a composting toilet there. Return the

Fairy Falls – Old Coach

F

By Mike Giri

airy Falls-Old Coach Road Track is one of the many walking tracks in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park which is so close to Auckland city and its dwellers. It is quite busy during the holiday seasons. This is one of the interesting walks within the park and close to Arataki Visitor Centre. The Old Coach Track has historic significance in the sense that it runs along the original alignment of the Old Coach Road that once connected Henderson to the West Coast. The location of Arataki Visitors Centre is one of the best in the country I might claim. It sits on the ridge by the side of Scenic Drive and offers a spectacular view of lush green vegetation covered hills gently descending to Manukau Harbour. On the other side of the ridge is the West city in the foothills extending to Whaitemata Harbour. The Scenic Drive, as the name suggests, is very scenic and offers viewing points at places on both sides. However, drivers are cautioned that parking at unauthorised places can be very dangerous. Now, continuing on this particular walk, “Fairy Falls”, it is roughly 5km west from Arataki Visitors Centre on Scenic Drive. A car park there is well sign posted. The track starts from the right side opposite of the car park. As you step into the track you find the route map posted on a board. After walking about 20 metre you see a warning sign of “Stop Kauri Dieback” posted to request to clean up your shoes by brush on the ground and chemical spray which is there. The “Kauri Dieback” is caused by a fungus (Phytophthora taxon agathis). Such protective program for this fungal disease is in place in other forests as well where Kauri population is found. The track is well maintained through the dense native bush. The common vegetation include Kauri (Agathis australis) Right: A Stunning view of Manukau Harbour from the Arataki Visitors Centre. and rata (Metrisideros sp), tree ferns including silver fern (Cyathea dealbata), Nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida) mixed with other broadleaf plants. Similarly, sighting animals and birds depends on the season and time of the day. Some of the common forest birds can be heard or sighted at times (saw one fantail). A good reference of native flora and fauna may be found in the City Council’s report on Biodiversity (2007). The track first descends on a gentle slope for about 10 minutes. Then a side track to Old Coach Road/Good fellow tracks diverts on left side. Thereafter the gradient changes faster to zigzag sloping track. One can hear the trickling sound of a stream nearby. Then the slope becomes steeper and can only be covered by stairs Above left: Typical vegetation on the slope with a kauri tree at the top. Above right: Wooden stairs along the side of the Falls. Below left: At the bottom of the Falls there is another pool and some are enjoying it.

as the stream becomes falls. The wooden stair is built by the side of the falls and gives a pleasant view. The water falls in stages and at two places water has collected to make them look like a small swimming pool. The first one is in the middle, just in front of the bridge and second is at the bottom of the falls. I noticed that it was quite popular with youngsters or enthusiasts to go and plunge themselves into the cool pool. This descend is about 395 m. The track crosses the stream again a couple of times before it is sidelined along the stream. After about five minutes the track starts rising again. Here also the vegetation is similar to as described before. After 10 minutes of walk uphill you see the beautiful sight of the Tasman Sea coastline. The track has some slope but not requiring wooden stairs which is generally quite nice for walking. After about another 20 minutes the track reaches to a road on the right and the track continues on the left side. At this point also I saw another antifungal treatment device kept by the side. This can also be an entry point for those who choose to do so. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

My Favourite Walk

A word of caution is that if you did not know or did not carry a map you tend to continue on the road on the right. However, this is Mountain Road which is different. If you have to walk along this road it will be longer and more tiresome on the heated metal road, especially on a sunny day with temperature soaring around 25 degrees. Continuing on the track it goes along on Old Coach Road for sometimes and diverts towards right and keeps going uphill. In about another 30 minutes the tract reaches where it started before. Thus the track forms a nice loop of about 5.5 km. The estimated time to complete this loop is about two and half hours, but a fit and fast walker can do it in less than two hours. This can be good for all family members (Not wheelchair, though). I saw a family having kids as young as five years walking by. The up and down walk is quite a bit. It can be challenging for those with breathing difficulties, therefore may take advice. Being so close to city does not mean one should be negligent. All normal preparations such as walking shoes, comfortable clothing and water bottle are necessary for the walk. Depending on the season some extra things like a cap, sunglass, sunscreen and light energetic food etc may be needed. This walk gives some idea about the bush and hilly terrain walking which is relatively strenuous. It can very well be combined with a picnic for a day out with family and friends.

Mt Favourite Walk

Blowhard Bush Hawkes Bay By Allison Hall

Not even a twig quivered at Blowhard Bush on the day we chose to explore this interesting reserve. According to some the reserve got it’s name back in colonial times due to the long haul up from Omahu to the central plateau. By the time the horses had dragged their load to the top they were blowing - hard. However, be that as it may, the wind is often ferocious at this section of the road so I think the reserve’s name was intended to carry a double meaning. Blowhard Bush is found on the corner where Napier / Taihape and Lawrence Road meet; the car park is about 600 metres along Lawrence Road. The 63 hectare reserve was gifted to the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society in 1962. Serious possum control began in 2003 and thanks to a resolute group of volunteers all the attention is paying off. Dave and I set out reasonably early because with the temperature forecast to climb faster than we are able we wanted to get a head start. The main walk is a 2 1/2 hour loop track with tributary tracks to sites of interest. Times are according to the generous people at the Forest and Bird Protection Society. At the beginning of the track is a large Above right: A great view of the pine forests. Below left: A walk through tussock grass to the bush. Below right: The sign says it all.

shelter, long-drops and an information board warns explorers to keep to the designated path due to tomos and steep drop offs. The Tui track immediately takes us to a seam of limestone where great chunks have been fractured by earthquakes and weathered by wind and water. Passages, sinks, ravines and underground streams are a feature of this Waitoraran limestone formation. It is like walking among ancient ruins. Some of the rocks are deeply fluted and in passages the limestone walls are damp and dark, so this provides the perfect environment for mosses and ferns. The track then wends up through regenerating forest until it meets an old forestry road. Here the vegetation is sub-alpine. A three minute walk to the Lookout must not be missed because the view is magnificent. According to Sheila Cunningham, of Hawkes Bay For The Happy Wanderer fame, Dave and I are “fortunate it is warm and calm enough to linger long in appreciation.” We certainly are. However it is searingly hot and with no cloud to speak of we finish our survey of the exotic Pan PAC forest, the scarred

Blowhard Bush, Hawkes Bay wall of the Kaweka Range to our north and Mt Miroroa to our south, and we move on toward Lowry Shelter. When William Colenso travelled by this route in the 1850’s he would have seen mostly tussock and scrub clinging to a desolate windswept landscape; the result of a combination of volcanic eruptions and early man-made fires. Then Europeans burnt the grasses and scrub to graze sheep and by the1890’s rabbits spread to Blowhard. Now, thanks to the people at Forest and Bird, many sub-alpine plant species have returned and they crowd the edge of the path but are not tall enough to offer shade. Lowry Shelter is a hop, skip and jump away from the lookout. After poking about Lowry Shelter for a while we next come to Patiki’s cave where a Maori family lived in the 1800’s. On this side of the reserve a few giants, escapees of the fires and felling, massive matai, kahikatea, rimu and black maire can be found. Take the Rewi Track, a crescent that joins back to the Tui Track after a 20-30 minutes walk. The trees here support a variety of birds - yet another interesting feature of Blowhard Bush. We were entertained by a gang of whitehead’s (popokatea) as they raided

the canopy for insects. Whiteheads tend to keep to the canopy so it is difficult to get a satisfying look at them. They are acrobatic little birds and their call trills on and on, much louder than their size would suggest. The list of bird species found at Blowhard Bush is long and of course includes tui and bellbird (korimako). There are also North Island Robin (toutouwai), grey warbler (riroriro), silver eye (tauhou), New Zealand pipit (pihoihoi), cuckoo (pipiwharauroa and koekoea) and I nearly stood on a kereru. Perhaps it had fallen from a tree after eating too many berries. The silly thing startled, blundered into flight, and then smashed through the shrubbery like a front-row forward. Gave me quite a start! I have to mention the fungi because one of the most comical sights we saw was a parade of these funny white parasols. They seemed to have something in mind as they followed each other in an orderly trail, crossed our track and then disappeared down a slope. I might have followed them if it were not for the warning to stick to the path. And one other thing - there are weta’s in the caves. The tracks at Blowhard are good, with just enough upping to provide a cardio-vascular workout and to make

kids sleep well at night. The reserve is a great introduction to the joy of walking New Zealand bush, especially with the caves to explore, and Lowry Shelter and the lookout for added interest along the way. We saved the Troglodyte Track for another day. This short track will take you to more caves and the Troglodyte boulder five minutes from the beginning of the track. The boulder, used by rock-climbers, is 40m long and 4m high. Interesting features at Blowhard Bush include: The altitude (800m above sea-level.) Limestone rock formations. Diversity of plant life. Diversity of bird-life. Patiki’s cave. Examples of mature native trees. Lowry Shelter. Trust to take over popular Waiheke Walking Festival

T

he Waiheke Walking Trust has been established to deliver the annual Waiheke Walking Festival and ensure its ongoing success and popularity; as well as promoting walking on Waiheke all year round. Denise Whitfield, Festival organizer for the past four years says: “I’m delighted that the Waiheke Walking Trust have acquired the Walking Festival. The new Trust will provide strong governance and financial support to an event that has grown year on year. The Hauraki Gulf Conservation Trust have successfully grown the Festival to a point where it requires dedicated focus and resources – the new Waiheke Walking Trust will manage the Festival as a core activity.” The Waiheke Walking Trust aims to ensure the Festival continues to benefit the Waiheke community and local businesses, by showcasing Waiheke as a walking destination and encouraging locals and visitors to experience walking on Waiheke. The Trust is thrilled to announce Sir Graham and Raewyn, Lady Henry, as Ambassadors. “We love the lifestyle Waiheke provides - the opportunities for walking and fishing, and the wine. We’re excited to get behind the Waiheke Walking Trust, and to be involved again in this year’s Walking Festival”. Over time, the WWT plans to develop an online resource for Waiheke walking information, promoting public walkways that are available year round, as well as other walking events throughout the year. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

The Trustees are Waiheke residents, and include Denise Whitfield, who has developed and managed the Festival over the last four years; John and Jo Gow, who are well known as founding benefactors of Sculpture on the Gulf, owners of Connells Bay Sculpture Park and who were actively involved in transforming Rotoroa Island; and Tessa Shaw and Tim Huston, keen walkers who have lived on the island for five years, and bring branding, marketing and sponsorship skills to the Trust. Gary Wilton, champion of the Waiheke walking trails including Te Ara Hura, says “I am pleased to be involved with the new Waiheke Walking Trust in an advisory role. The Waiheke Walking Festival has put the Island on the international map as a fantastic walking destination and I am thrilled that it now has a home with a Trust formed primarily to support and grow this iconic event”. The Waiheke Walking Trust acknowledges the great work of the Hauraki Gulf Conservation Trust, and the Auckland Council before that, in developing and growing the Waiheke Walking Festival . WWT also acknowledge the support of the Waiheke Local Board, both in financial support for the festival since its inception and in creating, extending and improving the network of public walkways on the island. The Waiheke Walking Festival 2017 will run 18 – 26 November 2017, with nine days of free guided walks. For more information visit waihekewalkingfestival.org.

nly four of the Tower Trampers headed off from Christchurch to Mt Alford. Two of us had not done this tramp before so we were certainly up for the challenge. When we arrived it was easy to say let’s go back and go to a cafe in Methven as it was rather dreary weather, foggy and a slight drizzle. We got organ■ ised and the drizzle stopped but fog remained. It is beautiful beech forest to start off with and the trees are so incredibly black. The track had plenty of mud but not too bad because our boots did not sink too deep down. We were keen to give it a go and get to the top and if the weather was too bad we could just turn back. We always make sure we have the right gear when we go out tramping. We could not see across the Canterbury Plains but that was OK as we had to keep an eye on the track and watch our step. The beech forest was beautiful on its own. We found a table for our morning tea when we cleared the beech forest and all had a hot cuppa before continuing our climb. No drizzle but just fog and now and then it would clear a little so we could see a bit further on. As we continued the terrain changed to rocks and smaller plants and tussock. At some stages there was not much visibility at all. The track was well marked and with four pairs of eyes we could always see the next marker which was www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

very important. All of a sudden after a good climb we realised we were at the top. We had a nursery garden of rocks and boulders which was something that was so special we had never seen before but no view. It was really unusual to be at the top with no view but we were all thrilled to have made it and were ready for a good cuppa and our lunch. We still took some spectacular photos. There was no sun or wind to push the fog along. Every now and then we had a different view as the fog would open up for a few minutes then close again. We headed back to the cars and enjoyed the descent down. We had all achieved Mt Alford and were all rather proud of ourselves. We took off our muddy boots and then started our journey back to Christchurch. We certainly had a great day. Mt Alford is (12.5 km from Methven, Off Arundel Gorge Road Highway 72).

current topics of the day and suspect Sylvia’s cooking could possibly be blamed for the slight waist expansion. Next morning we were picked up by Dave and taken to the start of our first walk which was the Aotuhia-Kurapete and Matemateaonga Tracks. Dave regaled us with history and stories of the area while guiding us through the first 8km of the 20km walk which was a mixture of farmland and bush. When he left us we were supplied with a map and instructions that would see us make the clearing in time for lunch. The track was reasonably obvious but there were a couple of treefalls Above: On day two walking beside a papa and slips to negotiate. We duly arrived in Stratford at the appointed hour and after a few formalities were driven by Carol to our first farmstay where we were based for two nights. Alan and Sylvia were the perfect hosts and made us feel relaxed and part of the family. We yarned away some time around the table taking apart the

Eastern Taranaki Experience the mid-way point of this walk where we stopped for smoko. While there we watched an aerial kereru display, seemingly right on cue. Meantime Dave had walked back to the beginning of the track, did a few jobs and parked at the end of the track to wait for us. Day two and it was Carol who took us to our next walk which was alongside the river on the old Whangamomona Road, starting at the Bridge to Somewhere. A good part of the 18km was bush, petering out to farmland at the end. Although still a non-maintained

public road we had to keep an eye out for vehicles but the only one we encountered was a lone motorcyclist. The vehicles that had been through previously though caused us a bit of angst while negotiating the large mud holes without disappearing up to our kneecaps. Bridges, a couple of tunnels and a swingbridge also diverted our attention. Carol was waiting for us at the pickup point not far from Whangamomona. After the obligatory stop at the small settlement she took us to our next farmstay cottage and stayed the night, getting us organised and cooking tea. For day three we chose a visit to

Mount Damper Falls which involved a short 20 minute walk each way from the road end. Rain the previous night had charged the falls up a bit and we were treated to an extra waterfall not far from the main attraction. Carol stopped at numerous places on the drive to the falls to point out historical facts and also allowed for photo opportunities. In fact she went out of her way to show us hidden gems only the locals know and for that we were most appreciative. Lunch stop was at Bushlands Campground in the Tangarakau Valley which was a surprise. The day was a bit cool so kumara/pumpkin/bacon soup and beer bread was on the menu – very tasty. The owners are in the process of getting a museum together but we did manage a glimpse of some relics. Ponga and ferns were dominant because of regeneration but overall the native bush was spectacular along both of these walks. Bush-clad papa bluffs rose high above us on one side in places and some exposed ones had interesting strata. Although the birdlife wasn’t that prolific for the time of year we still saw pheasant, kereru, robin, tomtit, fantail, grey warbler, tui, bellbird, and silvereye. Occasionally the bush opened up to enable us to see the long view, be it steep farmland or vast areas of bush. At tour’s end Carol drove us back to Stratford in time for us to visit Lake Rotokare at Eltham on the way home. A stroll around the lake circuit was rewarded with saddleback sightings and kokopu under one of the small boardwalk stream crossings. Thanks to Dave and Carol we had a pretty good introduction to rural eastern Taranaki. They were both very accommodating and strove to make our stay more than we had anticipated. Presumably they achieved their goal as well – we were pleasantly tuckered out by the time we got home. Above left: Nicky on a swingbridge. Below left: The track on day one.

ruru (morepork), beautifully hand-crafted from galvanised steel atop a column of weathering steel, now watches over Kohupatiki Marae and the awa of its people, the Ngaruroro Mokotuararo ki Rangatira (Clive River) in Hawke’s Bay, beside the cycleway. Historical landmarks of mana must not be forgotten, says Arconnehi Paipper (Aki), the woman behind the dramatic pou that has been erected on the cycleway in Whakatu. The pou marks the spot where the pre-European fortified Pa Otanenuiarangi stood. “The pou honours the history of where we came from which is inseparable from who we are today.” In the early 1800s the pa was a stronghold, protected from invaders by a palisade of kahikatea (white pine), one of the favoured habitat of the ruru, New Zealand’s native owl. “The awa was a waka highway; we connected with marae all along it. When the European came we used the river to trade with the whalers and sealers,” says Ms Paipper. The making of the pou was a collaboration between Kohupatiki, artists, HB Wool Scourers, and both the Hastings District Council and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. Access to the pou is along the cycleway by the river leading from Essex Crescent Reserve in Whakatu or from Clive village. The cycleway is part of the 200km plus Hawke’s Bay Trails network for cycling and walking across the Heretaunga Plains.

Walking in Japan

P

By Helen Tait Tour Leader

eople often ask me to name my favourite country. This is always an impossible task as so many places are appealing to me because of their unique combination of history, art and culture, cuisine, scenery, and perhaps most importantly - the customs of the local people.

I must admit that I have a particular affinity for Japan, partly due to the fact that it was the first place I worked overseas on my original “OE”, and also because of the rich blend of natural scenery, spectacular gardens, unique architectural styles, and the wide variety of beautifully presented food. There is also the calm patience and genuine politeness that are integral characteristics of the Japanese people. The month of November showcases the native foliage bathed in vibrant autumn colours, which will surround you as you visit a number of beautifully laid out gardens along the way. Mt Fuji and Miyajima Island, two of Japan’s most famous attractions, will also be enshrouded in the autumn palette during this time. November also means that there are far fewer tourists

than during the cherry blossom season. Last year, I was very pleased to be able to stay on in Japan to visit some additional locations, which I am excited to add to the tour this year. I have carefully selected some specific destinations that will give our tour more of a walking focus. All of the popular temples, shrines, castles and gardens will still be on the itinerary, but we have added a visit to the Kumano Kodo Trail - a pilgrimage Above: Colourful trees beside a lake with a pagoda in Kyoto. route which makes its way across the peaceful and beautiful Kii Peninsula. Our visit there will take us to three impressive shrines, and includes a stay at a traditional Japanese onsen – a unique type of accommodation built around a hot spring. We will also walk along a short stretch of the Nakasendo Trail, the traditional route linking the cities of Tokyo and Kyoto. Our day there will take in the picturesque and well-preserved towns of Magome and Tsumago, as we stop off en route to the lovely mountain town of Takayama. A fascinating addition to the trip will be a special overnight visit to the island of Naoshima and its amazing art hotel, which has been specifically designed to focus on the relationship between art and nature. The hotel is surrounded by outdoor sculptures, and features its own art museum, which guests can visit outside public hours. The modern art here is a great compliment to the traditional arts which we will enjoy on the tour – and even try our hand at while in Kyoto. The richness of history, culture, cuisine and scenery certainly make Japan a strong contender to be top of the ‘favourite list’ by anyone who is fortunate enough to experience this wonderful country. New swing bridge should increase the number of walkers in area

T

he number of users of Arapuke Forest Park near Palmerston North is expected to rise significantly with the construction of another bridge across Kahuterawa Stream. The new swing bridge will allow people to loop through Arapuke Forest Park instead of walking in and out the same way.

A new 22m long swing bridge was opened joining the Sledge Track to Arapuke Forest at a formal ceremony last month. The start of the Sledge Track is about 20 minutes and a 17km drive from the Palmerston North Central Square. Led by Palmerston North City Council (PNCC), staff member, Brian Way, a group of about 35 people walked up the Sledge Track to the site of the new

bridge. The Sledge Track is a popular and very scenic walking and tramping track, that  gives access to an area of bush reputedly the same size as Kapiti Island. Officially opened on 6 April 2003 by Prime Minister, Right Honourable Brian Way at the sign before the opening of the bridge. Helen Clark, the track was the result of the work of dedicated volunteers led by retired farmer Ian Argyle with the support of PNCC. The new bridge enhances the Sledge Track by making it a gateway to the Arapuke Forest Park, a large area of harvested pine forest now owned by PNCC. Incidentally, most appropriately Arapuke means ‘pathway in the hills’. The steep slopes are being left to regenerate in natives. The easier country where mountain bike and walking tracks will be developed are to be replanted in various long cycle exotic species including redwoods, macrocarpa, eucalypts. The bridge makes a number of loop walks possible; as the opening speakers emphasised, loops are always more satisfying than walk-in walk-outs! The Park is already the location of 15km of mountain bike tracks mostly developed by the Manawatu Mountain Bike Club with some forestry tracks shared as tramping tracks and some exclusive to bikers Over the bridge, the connecting track up and into Arapuke Forest Park is the result of a lot of work by volunteers, again led by the redoubtable Ian Argyle. Sadly, Ian Argyle was unable to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony as he was detained in hospital following an operation and is now happily discharged. The brief and heart warming ceremony consisted of a speech by Brian Way giving the background to the project, a blessing, karakia and dedication by Todd Taiepa the PNCC Principal

My Favourite Walk

Walking in Croatia’s National Parks

Croatia has eight National Parks, two of the most spectacular being Plitvice Lakes National Park, and Krka National Park, both in the Northern Dalmatian area of the country. The most outstanding geological feature of this area is the prevalence of limestone and dolomite rock, known as karst, which results in a landscape of caves, lakes, and waterfalls. Karst is formed by the acidic water dissolving the surface limestone. In Krka and Plitvice National Parks the waterfalls not only seem to come from everywhere, but they keep moving, resulting in a spectacular landscape of water flowing over greenery. The water is pristine clear and the most extraordinary colours. The colours By Kay change according to the minerals and organisms in the water, and the angle of the sun, but most of the time are a surreal shade of turquoise,

with some areas appearing more of an emerald green or steely grey.

Krka National Park

Our trip to Krka National Park was a day trip from the coastal town of Split where we had taken an apartment for several days. We hired a car [and driver] for the short drive to the picturesque little town of Skradin from where we took a boat up the Krka River, through a canyon, to the park entrance. The ‘highlight’ of the Krka National Park is to walk the Brown boardwalk loop, which connects all the little islands in the emerald green, fish filled, Krka River.

My Favourite Walk

Walking in Croatia’s National Parks

The boardwalk is essential as the water does just seem to come from everywhere, flowing in varying depths, and following varying routes, over vegetation and around trees. Everywhere the water is so clear that you can see all the sunken logs and small fish. It is not a walk to be hurried! Here another Karstic phenomenon is apparent. The river carries down

calcium carbonate [limestone] which becomes encrusted in the roots of the mosses and algae, millions of these pile up on top of each other forming a material called tufa [sometimes also known as travertine]. The highly porous tufa creates barriers in the rivers resulting in the spectacular waterfalls. The biggest of these waterfalls is Skradinski Buk, which is actually an 800m long series of cascades descending about 45m before crashing its final 12 metres down into the lake below. This lake has become a popular swimming spot, which owing to the warm temperature was very popular on the day we visited. To the side of the lake you can see the remains of the Jaruga Power Plant which began operation in 1895 providing power for the street lights of the historic local town of Sibenik, making Sibenik the first city in the world to have alternating current [AC] electric street lights. We understand that it was the first AC hydro power plant in Europe and the second in the world. It began operation just two days after the Adams power plant on the Niagara Falls!! The area surrounding Krka has the

34 Walking New Zealand, issue no 233 - 2017

second highest concentration of lavender per square kilometre in Europe. Not surprisingly there are many local craft stalls selling everything associated with lavender!

Plitvice National Park

After Split we moved on to Zadar the coastal town famous for its “sea organ. From Zadar we caught a local bus up to the Plitvice Lakes. The bus service was convenient and reasonably priced and dropped us off at the gates to the park, from where it was only a short walk to our accommodation. The heavily forested park covers an area of almost 30,000 hectares, 217 hectares of which is water. Plitvice has a very interesting history - A preservation society was founded in 1893 and the first hotel was built in 1896. Above left Simon and Kay Brown in front of the many beautiful waterfalls. My Favourite Walk

Walking in Croatia’s National Parks In 1949 it was proclaimed a National Park, [the first in Croatia] and in 1979 Plitvice Lakes was included in the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage sites. Plitvice has 16 crystalline lakes tumbling into each other via a series of waterfalls. The lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometres dropping 135 metres. Veliki Slap, the largest waterfall in the park falls 70m. [Slap is waterfall in Croatian] The lakes became a popular tourist destination until the Civil War when the rebel Serbs took control of the park and turned the hotels into barracks. The first victim of the Civil War was a Croatian policemen who was actually killed in Plitvice Park on 31st March 1991 when the Serbs took control of the park headquarters.

The Croatian Army took the park back in August 1995 and slowly restored the park facilities. The hotels are of very institutional appearance, with little architectural merit, but being able to stay in the park so near to all the park’s amazing physical features, was something special. Plitvice is quite different to Krka in that in the effort to preserve the environment commercial activity is very restricted. [Not the same number of lavender products for sale!] In 2006 swimming was banned in all of the lakes, in an effort to protect the fragile ecosystem from excessive human influence. Uncontrolled tourism and water pollution caused by waste water from hotels and agricultural activities in the lakes surroundings, had led to a higher rate of eutrophication of the lakes (increased concentrations of organic

substances within the water) It was imperative to take action to protect the fragile ecosystem and for the sustainable formation of Tufa. As at Krka there are extensive board walks which enable those with time constraints to see the most spectacular sights in a short time. Fortunately, as we were staying in the park we had time, so we walked the board walks first thing in the morning, or late in the afternoon when the day walkers had left for home. During the day we walked the lesser used paths around the lake edges, mostly in the shade of the beech & fir trees, which was very pleasant as the temperatures were quite warm. An advantage we discovered of staying inside the park was that the hotels were able to validate your ‘Park Pass’ for an additional day at no extra cost. This pass gave you free access to the boats that cruise up and down Kozjak, the largest of the lakes, something we took good advantage of. Instead of walking right around the lake we walked one side, caught the boat back and then walked the other side! This enabled us to see the lake, forest and waterfalls from all perspectives. The most famous inhabitants of the Park are the Brown Bears –we did see several but not in the Park!! Two playing in an enclosure behind a Café near to the Park and a bizarre row of stuffed bears formed a “Guard of honour”en route to the café toilets. Those in the wild kept well away. In conclusion: Croatia is a great country to free travel, it has a very efficient and user friendly public transport service, and economical character accommodation. The local people were very friendly and welcoming to travellers, they seemed to have the attitude that their country needed tourism so they would go out of their way to make sure the tourists had a memorable time in their country. They appeared loath to talk about their past problems and only wanted to move forward to the future. Croatia is a fascinating and beautiful country offering many great walking experiences. The national parks cater for all age and fitness levels, if short on time you can see the main highlights by only doing the board walks, or you can stay longer and enjoy exploring further afield.

J

ohn Owen of Kaeo, Whangarei, has struggled over the years with staying active, even though he first started in 2010. He identifies lack of time, due to placing other demands ahead of his health and wellbeing, as the biggest challenge he’s had to overcome to being regularly active. Since being referred to Green Prescription in June 2016, John has been able to achieve greater consistency with his activity levels and believes that better planning is the key to achieving it. John’s week now includes walking 7–14 km per week and three 75 minute gym sessions of walking, rowing, cycling and pilates. John has lost over 12 kg, combining his increased activity with changes to his diet like: restricting alcohol to the weekends limiting his consumption of bread eating healthier lunches of salads. He is also waking feeling fresher in the mornings and has more energy at the end of the working day. Other health benefits as a result of a more active lifestyle include: a drop in his blood pressure from

150/90 to 120/80 a loss of 20 cm off his waist having less discomfort in his joints. When asked how he feels about physical activity now he replies, ‘I always knew physical activity was good for you. Now that I am actually doing it, I know it is not only good, but essential.’ Besides the support of Hillary Sheard, Healthy Lifestyle Advisor at Whangaroa Health, he ascribes his success to the support he’s had from family and friends. If you are considering becoming more active, John’s advice is ‘just do it … it works’
