Walking with elephants in Botswana Ever fancied an elephant as your tour guide on safari? Well, now you can thanks to luxury travel provider Sanctuary Retreats’ unique elephant program, which it operates in partnership with the Living with Elephants Foundation in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. With its lush floodplains and dry Kalahari sands, northern Botswana is home to the world’s largest remaining population of African elephant herds, where they live a largely protected and secure existence. Guests staying at Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta can take advantage of a unique opportunity to explore and experience the African bush from an elephant’s perspective. Here they can spend half a day walking with Jabu and Morula, a pair of semi-habituated orphaned elephants, observing and interacting with them in their natural environment. This extraordinary experience allows guests to join a foraging trek, steered by the elephants, and observe at close quarters how they search peacefully for food, stripping leaves from branches with their trunks, shaking trees for palm nuts and spraying themselves in the Delta’s lagoons. Jabu and Morula were adopted by Living with Elephants’ husband and wife team, Doug and Sandi Groves, when culling operations in South Africa and Zimbabwe left them as orphans. The couple have strived to give them a life that is as close to elephants’ natural lives as possible, albeit one that is a little cushioned from the enormous pressures, insecurities and challenges with which wild elephants are typically confronted. Heart of the Elephant Itinerary If you can feel the pull of the pachyderm, then Sanctuary Retreats’ 5-night Heart of the Elephant itinerary is the one for you.

USA Ambassadors launch speaking tour about Te Araroa Trail
Two American backpacking ambassadors, Patrice and Justin La Vigne, have launched a U.S.-based speaking tour, “Exploring New Zealand: Thru Hiking Te Araroa and Beyond.” Starting Monday, May 1 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the free speaking events will stop at 29 retail stores, one brewery and one town library across 17 states. The tour will wrap up in Denver, Colorado, on Monday, July 24. Patrice and Justin will share photos, Te Araroa route information, New Zealand side trips, Leave No Trace advice and gear recommendations in their 75-minute presentations. This is the second nationwide speaking tour about Te Araroa initiated by the couple. The husband-wife duo have collectively hiked 12,000 miles worldwide and walked Te Araroa during the 2014-15 season. Patrice has written a travel memoir about their hike and is currently securing a publisher. Since 2011, Patrice and Justin La Vigne opted to live a “life less ordinary.” The self-proclaimed modern-day nomads spend more time outside than inside with their main passion being backpacking and 12,000 trail miles between them. The husband-wife dynamic duo works here, there and everywhere across the United States, teaching environmental education and serving in the hospitality industry. They wear many hats, in particular as Leave No Trace Master Educators, motivational speakers, outdoor gear testers, writers and brand ambassadors for many gear companies. NatureGuide app for forest attractions
South New Brighton Park on track for comeback
A revitalisation of South New Brighton Park in christchurch, will draw people back to the area this summer, more than six years after it suffered damage in the 2011 earthquakes.
A new mobile app will help tourists and locals visiting the West Australia State’s iconic forest attractions learn more about the natural wonders of the region. The Department of Parks and Wildlife, in partnership with Nature Guide, has developed the South West Nature Guide app that provides visitors with information when visiting the Tree Top Walk, Ancient Empire Walk, William Bay National Park, Giant Tingle Tree, King Jarrah and the Gloucester, Bicentennial and Diamond trees. The app contains more than 120 entries covering local flora, fauna, history and geology with the number of trails and entries set to grow in the future. To download the app, visit the app store and search for the South West NatureGuide.
A renewed car park area for up to 26 vehicles, picnic tables, a rebuilt boardwalk and upgraded paths capable of taking baby strollers are all in the mix for the upgrade, which will be complete in time for summer visitors in December.
Work has already begun on a $400,000 project to rebuild the South New Brighton jetty, and now the neighbouring park areas are in for an overhaul.
The current wooden jetty, boardwalk and car park area was damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and the boardwalk sustained further damage in a severe storm during 2013.
Christchurch City Council Project Manager Michael Sheffield said the upgrade would reinstate a loop walk taking in the Pleasant Point Yacht Club and nearby wetlands.
“We are halfway through the jetty project now, and recycling about 50 percent of materials that we’re getting off the jetty. The second stage is beginning soon which will be the car park renewal. We will also include restoration of the estuary bank around the carpark and jetty. It had slumped away after the earthquake,” Mr Sheffield said. It is hoped that some of the old jetty piles can be used to provide posts around the renewed car park.
Another major project for the area is the repair of the 120 metres of wooden boardwalk which had been damaged in the earthquake and 2013 storm. The existing piles would be repaired and levelled and made stronger. Shore protection would also be put in place with 140 metres of shore protection rocks staggered to protect the boardwalk from estuary wave action, but also allow water flow to maintain the wetlands. Council Coastal and Plains Head Ranger Kelly Hansen said the work would allow the public back in to enjoy a unique estuary environment which had been a wonderful community asset over the years.
“Repair of the South New Brighton jetty, car park and boardwalk are the latest activity in the long road to recovery and will reinstate valuable recreation opportunities for the local community. We’re looking forward to welcoming the public back to these fantastic recreation areas.” Above: The South Brighton boardwalk is going to be repaired. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

My Favourite Walk
McLarens Falls Park - colourful in autumn The best short walk ever? My best short walk has always been around the “Mount” - Mt Maunganui. But perhaps this walk is even better. 20 kms out of Tauranga, up the Kaimais is McLarens Falls Park. Leaving the main highway you round a corner and there the rushing, racing waters of the two rivers make a spectacular picture and a great picnic spot but we mustn’t stop as the Park and Autumn calls. The short drive to the first car park is through an avenue of huge plane trees. They tower above and the brown, yellow leaves cover the tarmac and make a crisping sound under the tyres. Conveniently, no pun intended, there are excellent toilets, a large story/ map board and a small indoor display/ information area plus an excellent café, The Falls Retreat. Shut today (Monday) We like to begin our walk from here
as it gives us a longer short walk. Down the steps to the lake, this morning still and reflective. Yea! No wind. It’s very noisy as the tuis and fantails chat overhead and on the lake the ducks chatter to each other. We wondered what they were saying as they scrabbled across the water. Lots of swans too but they were silently and elegantly dipping and diving for breakfast. At every turn we oohed and aahed and the camera clicked and whirred. We’d missed the best of the colours, the leaves probably ravaged in the last rain storm. Maybe the gingkos are more delicate than the sturdy liquid ambers. Oh, those liquid amber trees—the leaves so red they looked like raspberries. The path is brilliant. Wide enough for two to walk together and chat and no need to constantly watch your step for tripping roots. Our short walk follows the edge of the lake closely with bridges and the odd

gate to keep the sheep from straying. The golden bronze of the Swamp Cyprus glowed in the sunshine. It’s strange to see such beautiful trees growing straight up out of the water. Why don’t they get waterlogged and drown? We stopped to watch a group from a playcentre delightedly toddling around, chasing the ducks and gathering up the bright leaves. Mums, and a Dad too, bravely giving the littlies freedom to run. Phones catching the moment. What a wonderful sound the swans make as they land on the water and why do the paradise ducks always stay on the other side of the lake? A congregation of noise. Further on the liquid ambers drape into the water and the flax bushes make a hiding place for the little black coots. Across the lake the paddocks turn into a forest of pine trees. Their reflections looking like a spill of huge matchsticks. The track narrows and the walk slips through a wetland where the pukekos fluff their white bottom feathers at you

and dive into a hidey hole in the swamp. The path leads into stand of native bush. It’s damp and mossy and much cooler in here. Steps up give you a good cardiac workout. (you can avoid these by taking a short cut up through the freedom camping ground). Along the road a little way and over a cattlestop and then it’s “choices.” Climb up more steps on the right for a longer walk, views and a chat with the sheep or amble along the road for a short distance and rejoin the lakeside track. Funny how everything looks different on the homeward journey. You always seem to see something you missed. On a weekday morning, with few people about this is a magic walk at any time of the year. The coffee shop open would be icing on the cake. A short walk to share. McLarens Falls Park is managed by the Tauranga City Council. It is 20 kms from Tauranga on SH 29. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

. The Bay of Islands Walking Weekend -
Walking the islands made accessible and affordable
T
he Bay of Islands Walking Weekend has a huge variety of walks. We walk many of the islands and remote spots on the peninsula that are hard to access as individuals – the walking weekend makes it affordable and accessible. These walks are spectacular with breath taking scenery, amazing flora and fauna. This is a must do all-time favourite for walkers on the weekend – the Moturua and Motuarohia Island Walk. Travel aboard the R Tucker Thompson, which is a total experience in itself – this amazing olde tall ship with its fantastic crew is a
real treat and a perfect way to travel to your destination in the Bay of Islands. Sail past the spot where Captain Cook anchored in 1769 just before we land barefooted on Motuarohia Island. Walk and talk - hearing some history of Cook, the firing of a canon and the theft of kumara from the locals. Learn of the ghastly murder of the whole family of Robertons who farmed there. Re-join the ship for the short voyage to Moturua Island. More murders happened here more stories are told. Observe the feathered wild life, saddlebacks, tui, fantails, North Island robin,

and the very endangered dotterel who insist on nesting near the high tide mark which further endangers its existence. The views, lagoons, beaches and bush leave you breathless on every step of the journey. The walking is fabulous and you journey to some beautiful spots. This day trip is truly entertaining with its stories and majestic in its beauty. Totally unique and a real must do in the Bay of Islands. Other walks by boat are Urupukapuka Island Walk, Project Island Song Walk, and walks on the Cape Brett Peninsula. The Project Island Song Walk is a new walk this year where you can spend all day on Urupukapuka Island focusing predominantly on encounters with newly released birds, while walking the entire network of tracks. Walk among regenerating native bush and trees, take in stunning sea views. Listen to the birdsong and spot reintroduced tieke (saddleback), tout-

ouwai (North Island robin), pōpokatea (whitehead) pāteke (brown teal) and many other species. There is 21km of trail on the island and you will be walking and exploring 10 – 12km over the day. This gives you an amazing experience on the island as you get to enjoy the islands hidden treasures, enjoy some kai, beautiful beaches and bird watching stations. So what is Project Island Song? – Project Island Song is a partnership between community conservation group the Guardians of the Bay of Islands, local Rawhiti hapu (Ngati Kuta and Patukeha) and the Department of Conservation. Project Island Song’s vision is the ecological restoration of the pest-free islands of Ipipiri in the eastern Bay of Islands to create an archipelago of sanctuaries that celebrates the native subtropical habitat, lush with vegetation and alive with birdsong. They have just released Kakariki back into the islands which is just incredible. Enjoy this magic walk with guides who are experts in this habitat. Food also seems to be at the centre of some of our walks. From simple White Bait Fritters cooked for you at the end of the Okiato to Orongo Bay walk, to pizzas and platters at Omata Estate or brunch at Charlottes Kitchen. All of these delights are deserved after several hours walk. The walking weekend HQ is in the Russell Bowling Club, the Saturday
night there is a fun prize giving - though it’s not a competition we have some great prizes to give away and some funny stories to share after two days walking. This is a jovial affair with a shared meal and another of the culinary and social highlights of the weekend. There are many walks to choose from - from an hour to all day. From easy to challenging, you can even walk one way and kayak back. For information on all walks visit www.boiwalkingweekend.co.nz, or call 021 122 9307.

Martha Mine Pit
Rim Walk
W

aihi’s Pit Rim Walkway/ Cycleway is a most enjoyable walk that starts at the Waihi Information Centre and also ends there. Only metres from the centre of Waihi township and directly across the street opposite the I Site (Information Centre) is the start of this great walk/cycle path. You can take the stairs from the footpath or if you have a bike there is access to the right of the stairs along the footpath where you can use the concrete ramp that is designed for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. This will take you up to the beginning of the walk/ cycle path. This old gothic style Cornish pump house that sits on the top of the hill above the street was based on a design used in the tin mines in Cornwall England. It was used to house the steam engines that operated the huge pumps that kept the Martha Mine from flooding. It looks so grand and gives pleasant memories of the old history of New Right: The Martha Mine Pit showing the rock fall down into the mine.

Follow the fenced path to the left and around the top of the rim and as you look down you will be blown away by the size and depth of the pit which was once a hill and is now sitting100ms below sea level. Unfortunately due to a million tonne fall of rock and earth several years ago access around the complete top area of the rim is closed off for safety reasons and operations of the mine have been put on hold so the original path that circled the top of the mine travels a short distance along the top edge where the rest of the path is netted off and detours onto the street below. This entails travelling a short distance along the street to access the new track. You will be directed down onto the street by well marked arrow signs which you will follow for the rest of your walk/ cycle around the base of the mine. Once on this street turn right and follow the

well marked arrow signs where further along you will be directed up a hill on the right. It is from here that the track begins. Unfortunately the rim is now out of view until you return to the finish back at the pump house. The gravel track continues clockwise around the western end of the mine (well marked by arrows) and meanders through native bush, acres of old gold mining relics are scattered along the way beside the path where it is worth spending some time for a bit of history of old New Zealand. There are also scenic parklands and a small wetland area along the way. Follow the arrows which will take you back to the start on the top of the rim by the old pumphouse. There are many delightful café’s in the area of this quaint lovely little town where you can rest your wary legs and body and soak up a well deserved coffee or tea. f you’ve never walked the Queen Charlotte, or walked it many years ago, put it on top of your bucket list! The Queen Charlotte track is 71 kms long and usually completed in three or four days, but there are many and varied options for day walks, with boat transport between. This makes it a perfect family or group holiday, catering for all different needs. The track has been up-graded and improved over the years, and is very easy to access from Picton. Both ‘Beachcomber’ and ‘Cougar Lines’ run several trips a day to Ships Cove where the trail begins, and ‘ondemand’ water taxis will drop you off Above: Glimpses of Queen Charlotte Sound. at a variety of different bays, to do a section of the trail. For those walking the entire track, with prior arrangement, either boat company will transport luggage each day, and deposit it at your chosen accommodation. Accommodation options also cater for all -- from luxury apartments to hikers cabins. Each lodge has a first class restaurant, and often a spa or pool, available to all. In most, the hikers rooms have a fully equipped kitchen, and all have very welcoming staff and amazing views. We travelled to Ships Cove with ‘Beachcomber Cruises’. The Skipper, Julian gave a really interesting and informative commentary of the history, geography and wildlife of the area. As we passed Tory Channel and Arapawa Island, he told us about the first whaling station here. We were so lucky to strike an enormous pod of dol-

phins diving and leaping all around the boat. We slowed and cruised with them for half an hour. It was magic! We finally arrived at Ships Cove, to an impressive display of Captain Cook’s voyages of discovery to this area 17701777. Leaving there about mid-day, we followed a lovely shady dappled path, quite steep in places, to Resolution Bay, which we reached in about one and a half hours. Wekas followed us in many places grabbing anything put down for a second - hats, scarves, banana peel, anything they could carry. After another climb, an undulating trail led along the side of Endeavour Inlet, to reach Furneau Lodge nestled at its head. Views along the way were spectacular, and we had lots of photo stops. We reached our little cabin about 4.30pm and after a quick dip in the bay, we sat on the lovely wide verandah at the lodge, sipping chilled wine, and chatting to walkers from all over the world, as we watched the sun set over the bay. It was beautiful. The sunrise was equally stunning,
and after a photo shoot, we set off about 8.00am. At the Miners Camp, we took a side trip up to antimony mine. All that is left of a thriving little gold mining settlement is the mine shaft and lots of pretty pink and blue hydrangeas. Returning to Endeavour Inlet, we wandered through regenerating native bush, to Camp Bay and Punga Cove Resort. This is a delightful cluster of all types of accommodation, perched on the hillside above the little cove. Down at the bay, was a pool, two spa pools and a bar – a perfect way to end the day; and up a steep track, was a restaurant, where both food and scenery were well worth the effort. Day three was the longest day, so we set off early, anticipating long hot open stretches and no place to replenish our water bottles. How wrong we were. With regeneration over the years most of the track was shady; with lots of pine forest, and there were several places to fill water bottles. We climbed over Kenepuru Saddle, passed the Bay of Many Coves and Ruakaka Bay. The views were simply
stunning, with glimpses of both Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds. All along the way we encountered very large wekas, and in several places goats came wandering along the track towards us. We did wonder who would give way, but they veered off into the bush just before we did. At about mid-day, after a short sharp climb, we reached Black Rock shelter – a perfect lunch spot and again with magnificent views. Continuing on past several more bays we finally reached Portage Bay in Kenepuru Sound at about 3.30pm. Our accommodation at DeBretts B & B was first class. Views from our room were spectacular, kitchen and bathroom were fully equipped with anything you would need, and the hosts were friendly and

welcoming. It was a rewarding end to a long day. From here, there was an option to walk through to Torea Bay on the Queen Charlotte and catch a boat ride to Anakiwa. On day four we left early for Anakiwa. The track climbed steadily over Torea Saddle, so we were glad to be tackling the hill before it was too hot. This section had lots of beech trees smothered in black honey dew. Luckily there were no wasps. We soon passed the turn-offs to Mistletoe and Lochmara Bays, both accessible by boat. At Lochmara there is a Wildlife Recovery and Arts Centre, with nature trails, glow worm walks and native parakeet breeding programmes. Many people take day trips to this area. There was not so much open walking today, but we did get glimpses of Picton through the beech trees, and watched the Inter Islander cruise by. Lots of cyclists were enjoying this section of the track but Ships Cove to Kenepuru Saddle is closed to mountain bikes in summer. We walked high above Onahau Bay, then followed near the shore of Grove Arm to Anakiwa. Our first stop was the jetty. Jumping off into the clear water was heaven – but Above right: Sunset at Furneaux Lodge. Opposite page above: Onahau Bay, off Queen Charl;otte Sound. looking back as I climbed up, I spotted an enormous stingray. I was relieved to be halfway up the ladder. Although there was the option of getting the shuttle boat back to Picton at 4.00pm we chose to prolong the adventure, and stay the night at Anakiwa – another comfortable Lodge. The last night was spent celebrating with a young American couple who were proud to have completed their first
multi-day trek. The following morning our host drove us all back to Picton via Queen Charlotte Drive – an adventure in itself. This walk was an experience that’s hard to beat. The track was well maintained, accommodation comfortable, food delicious, all round service exceptional, and to cap it all, the scenery was simply stunning. Go book it now. Go to www.qctrack.co.nz

New Zealand Zealand Walk Walk New
What makes a Great Walk? By Juliet Gibbons

26 Walking New Zealand, issue no 235 - 2017
How do you create an iconic walking trail? First, take a pinch of initiative, a handful of funding and a bucketful of foresight. Mix this together with a breathtakingly unique natural environment and then throw in an historic site of international significance for good measure. Journalist turned track guide and owner of Wilderness Guides Marlborough Sounds Juliet Gibbons deliberates on the ingredients that make the Queen Charlotte Track a great New Zealand walk . . .
Most New Zealanders who walk the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds are surprised to find out that it isn’t one of the Department of Conservation’s official Great Walks. In the minds of many, it is one already. Located in the Marlborough Sounds and accessed by boat from the seaside town of Picton, the Queen Charlotte Track entices walkers from all around the world. Wilderness Guides have spent the past 18 years hosting walkers to experience the Queen Charlotte Track and have packages to suit all tastes and budgets. From family trips to backpacker style accommodation options combining hiking with kayaking and mountain biking through to the premier hotel and boutique lodge guided and independent walks, there is something for everyone. All feature the Queen Charlotte Track’s unique bag transfer system meaning you walk with just a day pack along the way. One of the keys to the track’s success has undoubtedly been its setting in the stunning natural environment of the Marlborough Sounds, an area of sunken river valleys, fjord-like in appearance. It is a landscape that is unique geographically and undoubtedly a national treasure although surprisingly, not a national or even a maritime park. This is due in part to its complex composition of private ownership which sits alongside numerous mainland and island reserves belonging to New Zealanders and managed by the Department of Conservation.
www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
New Zealand Walk
One of the many popular spots on the track to take a photo and take in the view.
Traditionally known by Kiwis as ‘the place you pass through’ on the ferry to Picton, more and more tourists now appreciate the beauty of this place (as locals already do) with its patchwork quilt of sheltered bays and inlets. The Queen Charlotte Track has largely been developed on the goodwill of the landowners whose properties it crosses as well as utilizing crown land managed by the Department of Conservation and road reserve belonging to the local Marlborough District Council. It is a national showcase of an enduring public/private partnership between these entities who have worked alongside the commercial operators to attract the visitors. The track itself has been easily walkable from the start at historic Ship Cove in the outer Queen Charlotte Sound to the end at Anakiwa in the Grove Arm since the early 1990s. A joint project between the Marlborough District Council, Department of Conservation and the local tourist board at the time saw the track established with the support of landowners. Bikers starting using it a few years later, with some limitations in the peak season. Normally walked over four days, the track is 71km long and parts of it date back to pioneer days as it uses original bridle paths which linked the early homesteads in the area. These hardy folk who came mostly from Great Britain to eke out an existence on a new land would never have comprehended the water taxis now making a living from shepherding walkers to and from this track. These days it is the walkers who trace historic footsteps between campsites, backpacker lodges and upmarket resorts where they can rest their weary feet at the day’s end over their own freeze-dried goodies or, if they are smart, a three course meal and glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Most visitors tend to choose independent packages while still making the most of luggage transfers to avoid heavy www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
packs and fine lodge accommodation. Many internationals join an experienced and knowledgeable local guide with companies such as Wilderness Guides. Maori have appreciated this area long before the European settlers arrived and it is believed that they have had a presence here for more than 1000 years. The Marlborough Sounds were an important trading route and home to several prominent iwi. The first known European to visit Queen Charlotte Sound was the famous English explorer and navigator, Captain James Cook, on the HMS Endeavour. He sailed into Ship Cove, today the start of the Queen Charlotte Track, on January 17, 1770 and made this small cove his South Pacific base for the next seven years. Cook was to return many times. It was here the first prolonged social interaction between South Island Maori and the European took place. It is regarded as a place of iconic significance by the Department of Conservation and will, in 2020, be one site marking 250 years since Cook first visited these shores. It is a place all New Zealanders should visit. Recently the marketing organization responsible for promoting the Queen Charlotte Track to the world, QCT Inc., was successful in securing funding from the local council and government towards enhancing the track surface and improving the gradient from Ship Cove. This funding and the ensuing works will broaden the access for all New Zealanders, be they on foot or by bike, and improve the quality of the Queen Charlotte Track experience from this historic site. It’s a fitting time to see this injection of capital into the track, the first significant funding since its inception, and great timing with the eyes of the world on Ship Cove as part of the 250 year celebrations. It will further cement the Queen Charlotte Track as a great walk in every other way than a ‘Great Walk’ – so perhaps it’s time to just make it official? Kitchener Park - a much prized
K
itchener Park is a much prized bush reserve, a mere few minutes drive from Feilding, in the Manawatu. Kitchener Park was created by the then Feilding Borough Council in 1916 and named after Lord Kitchener, the British Cabinet Minister and War Secretary. The park is an important remnant of lowland semi-swamp podocarp forest, one of the best and last-remaining in the Manawatu. The park contains many fine specimens of kahikatea, totara, rimu, pukatea and kowhai trees, including until recently, New Zealand’s tallest kowhai. There are also many rare species of fungus and insect life in the park, which have been
the subject of some intensive study by national and overseas scientists. The forest has suffered many flooding events over the years, and sustained major damage in the Feilding floods of 2004, and again in June 2015. Two significant streams, the Mangaone and the Makino, meet at the park, and flooding has brought major damage to the area, including the introduction of the weed tradescantia (Wandering Jew), which has been an ongoing challenge to control. When the Feilding Freezing Works closed in 1994, local pastor Gavin Scott gathered a group of unemployed freezing workers, and for many years they maintained the park, constructed boardwalks, and managed the weeds. Gavin

and his many workers, volunteers, troubled youth, community groups, have put countless hours into improving the park and making it available to visitors. In 2014, the Manawatu District Council, at the prompting of the then mayor Ian McKelvie, created the Kitchener Park Trust with Geoff Lovegrove, QSM, JP as chairman. On its inception, the trust appointed Gavin Scott as Honorary Curator. When the trust sought registration as a trust, it was necessary to change its name, and after consultation with local iwi, Ngati Kauwhata, the official name of the trust became the Awahuri Forest Trust - Kitchener Park. The weather event of June 2015 severely damaged the boardwalk, and after a year’s delay, the new boardwalk, with extensions, was commenced. This was completed early in 2017. The trust has sought funding from various charitable organisations to replace and add new signage and with the support of the Manawatu District Council, has ambitious plans for this significant taonga in the Manawatu, and looks forward to making ongoing improvements to the park. A large number of people visit the park, where walking and cycling trails are being established, with many opportunities for recreation and study. Feilding’s Kowhai Park, a major attraction in the town, is also linked to the park with a track that run beside the Makino Stream on one side and Manfield event centre on the other, providing an excellent destination for people of all ages to enjoy. The park has well sign posted directions and signs giving the names of trees
and plants. As a very leisurely pace the walk takes about an hour. If people wish to stay longer there are a number of clearings ideal for picnics. Below left: An interpretation sign beside a tall tree. Below right: The board walk in a shaded area.

Flinders Island - rugged mountain ranges full of wildlife and flora By Alex and Jenny Davies

t was while we were walking in Queensland with Hugh as a guide that we learned from him about the island where he had farmed for much of his life. This was an encouragement to join the next trip there that Auswalk had planned. So that’s how we happened to set off on an adventure to an island we’d only learnt about a few months ago, and that most of our friends professed to have never heard of! The one hour flight in the 20-seater plane from Essendon Airport in Melbourne was noisy but smooth. We flew south-east over Wilson’s Promontory and Bass Strait to our destination, the largest of the approximately100 islands forming the Furneaux group lying directly north of the East coast of Tasmania. They form a barrier to Bass Strait, so that although seen in 1773 by the British navigator Tobias Furneaux from HMS Adventure on his way north to rejoin James Cook on his second Pacific voyage, the identity of the strait was not established until George Bass and Matthew Flinders sailed through it in 1798. As for today, for people in the area over 10,000 years ago this island was also a good place to walk. With lower sea levels, they could walk with no trouble from Wilson’s Promontory to Tasmania, with islands of the Furneaux group as part of the land bridge. Melting of the polar ice sheets put paid to 25,000 years of foot traffic and isolated the Tasmanians until the arrival of ships from Europe. Our Auswalk guides, Marie and Hugh, assembled our group of 14 at Above right: Striding over vast slabs of granite beneath Old Man’s Head on our second day of walking. the airport. We stayed in a lodge in the south-west corner of the island, with the rugged granite domes of the Strzelecki Peaks behind. Before us lay the notoriously rough waters of Bass Strait, placid, however, during our time there. Each day we would use a small bus and a car to get us to the start of a walk. With clever planning, our guides could offer us a choice of longer or shorter walks, could meet us with hot drinks along the way, and could pick us up at the end of a day’s walk along the coast. For the next five days we enjoyed dry weather with liberal splashes of sunshine. We had three day’s beach walking and rock-hopping, and two days up into the ranges. Once away from the capital, Whitemark, and off the roads, we mostly had the island to ourselves. On the day planned for our climb of Mt Strzelecki, the highest point on the island at 782m, clouds were lingering about the bare granite cones behind our lodge. But as we set off up the well-formed but sometimes steep track, the sun broke through and the views out along the coast were spectacular. The forest became damper, and one gully was full of tall tree ferns. From the summit, we could see north to the Darling Ranges and beyond, west to Above: Jagged and rough calcareous rocks at the northern end of Killiekrankie Beach, and an ideal beach for swimming. a scattering of small islands along the coast, and south to the clouds on the peaks of Cape Barren Island. On the way down, we looked unsuccessfully for a long-nosed potaroo or a forty-spotted pardolate that are reputed to live here. Instead we found on a wet section of track what might be a juvenile burrowing crayfish, a species that makes the streams high on this mountain its home, and is found nowhere else but high parts of Flinders and Cape Barren Islands. Another day, a few of us also made a bold attempt on the “Eiger” of Flinders Island, Pillinger’s Peak. We had had a good view of this from Walker’s Lookout, the start of a walk through the Darling Range. Hugh led us up as far as the interesting-looking and steep ‘rock scramble’, where we ran out of time. So we missed the part of the route that used a rope to help negotiate a precipitous and massive granite slab and the experience of standing on the dizzy top of this remarkable pinnacle. On one of our walks, we discovered the dark side of Flinders Island history. After walking along a remote beach, we www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
turned inland to a wide windswept valley where, in the 1830s and 1840s, a sorry episode of colonial history transpired. It was here that many of the aboriginal people that had been forcibly resettled from mainland Tasmania had died of respiratory diseases, poor food and despair. Their unmarked graves lay somewhere beyond the headstones of island settlers. Within a lonely brick chapel that had been recently restored were forlorn accounts of both aboriginals and convicts from these harsh times. Every walk featured granite boulders, from large to truly mountainous, some lying on vast granite slabs. Along the coast, this stony landscape was decorated with rusty orange lichen.
With so many rocks to look at, it would be surprising if some were not of special interest. Such as Castle Rock, guarding a low headland separating two long sandy beaches. Or Old Man’s Head, beckoning us on as we set off along Killiekrankie Beach one morning. Close by at Stacky’s Bight is an archway in sedimentary limestone that separates two sandy beaches, through which we were able to swim. Further round the coast at The Dock a massive rock perched atop a cone of granite. It fired our imaginations about prehistoric battles with giants, now turned to stone, one with a split head. On a much smaller scale are Above: Above: Jagged and rough calcareous rock.

‘Killiekrankie diamonds’, pieces of topaz found in a stream flowing off this mountain. Disappointingly, our enthusiastic fossicking came to nought. The clearing of land for grasslands has benefited the native Bennett’s wallabies, to the extent that they are now a pest, just as they have become after their introduction to New Zealand. Fortunately for hungry hikers, they are good to eat, and their preparation for the table is a local industry. Wallaby meatballs were on the menu at the lodge, and are to be recommended.

There were a few gulls and shags around the coast, but more striking were the distinctive Cape Barren geese that we saw grazing on pasture near the beaches. Their closest relative is an extinct New Zealand bird known only from fossils. failed, to pass this way since the First Fleet in 1788. Displaying the anchor recovered in 1977 from the wreck of the Sydney Cove, the museum told the story of how this ship was beached on Preservation Island, south of Flinders Island, in 1797. Of 17 men who set off in a longboat on a perilous trip to seek help, only three survived the wrecking of this boat, and a journey on foot along the coast to Sydney, the only settlement at the time. Their arrival set rescue and recovery efforts, eventually involving Matthew Flinders and George Bass. The story of the naming of Flinders Island and Bass Strait is full of drama. So where is Flinders Island? At about the middle of the island, a white line crosses the road and a sign reads “40th
parallel south”. If you head west along this line, you will pass through Bass Strait, over King Island, across the South Australian Bight, the South Indian and Atlantic Oceans, the southern tip of Argentina and Chile, and the South Pacific. Then at last you will reach the coast of New Zealand near Waipukurau; the line passes just north of Palmerston North where we live. It’s a much shorter trip home from Flinders Island going east, assisted by the Roaring Forties! But in terms of latitude, we are already there.

Nik continued to play for the Classic All Blacks for another 12 years, travelling to Australia and Bermuda to play! With support and education from GRx he started making changes to his lifestyle. Nik began walking, cutting extra sugar out of his diet and attending the GRx classes at Glenfield Leisure
Centre. Four months on, Nik now attends the class twice a week and cycles 15 kms four times a week. He also increased his walking distance and intensity and has recently finished an 8-week programme with a dietitian. Since beginning GRx, Nik has lost

just under 10 kg! He has also reduced his HbA1C levels to an astounding 34 mmol/mol – meaning he is no longer pre-diabetic! With the help of GRx, Nik’s amazing progress is a true testament to his hard working and determined character. The GRx team have said, ‘We cannot wait to see what other fantastic things he achieves. We also look forward to seeing more effects of your new-found healthier lifestyle. Well done, Nik, we wish you all the best on the next stage of your journey.’ For a Green Prescription referral or more information ask your health professional.

4 beautiful Sunshine Coast hikes and walks By Sophie Wright for the Urban List
If there’s one thing we’ve learned since the cooler months kicked in on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, it’s that exercise is far less painful when it’s not in 98 per cent humidity. With outside temperatures now sitting at far more comfortable levels, there’s no better time of year to take advantage of the many walks and hikes the Sunshine Coast has to offer. We’ve searched far and wide to find you some tracks that aren’t the same old spots you’ve seen in your Instagram feed every second day, and we think we’ve found a few gems! Here are four walks or hikes to take, around the Sunshine Coast for all fitness levels.
to put a spring in your step for the rest of the day. Any time is a good time to climb, but we’re a sucker for a good sunrise. Phones charged and at the ready! Below left: Views that stretch forever from the top of Mount Ngungun. Photo: Jules Ingall.
Booloumba Falls
This one requires a tad more commitment than the rest, but we assure you, it’s SO worth the extra effort. Tucked away in
Buderim Forest Park Reserve
Most of you have probably heard of Buderim Forest Park, but have you ever actually been there? The time is now! Start-
ing at either Harry’s Lane or Quorn Close, both paths will take you on a spectacular journey through Buderim Mountain’s tranquil bushland, with a soundtrack of birdsong and babbling brooks. All roads lead to the falls, and it could be a good idea to have your togs on underneath your clothes, ready to go for a dip! It’s hard to believe it’s real… we still pinch ourselves. Above: Stroll under the rainforest canopy at Buderim Forest Park Reserve.
Mount Ngungun
How do you get the best views of the Glass House Mountains? Climb one of them, of course! While they’ve all got their perks, if there’s one to add to the to-do list this autumn, it’s Mount Ngungun. With uninterrupted views of the neighbouring mountains, your Ngungun experience is guaranteed
www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
the Conondale National Park, the Booloumba Falls track is a hinterland oasis … lush open rainforest, crystal-clear rock pools, and boulders bigger than you’ve ever laid eyes on! Head towards Maleny and follow the signs to Kenilworth, then pass through the town of Conondale and take the Booloumba Creek turn-off. Best to take a 4WD for those gravel roads, if poss. It also might be worth kicking it old school with a map, as phone reception can be a bit sketchy. A sense of adventure is a must! Above: Bring your sense of adventure to Booloumba Falls.
Emu Mountain
If hikes were products, this one would have “BEST VALUE” stamped all over it. Just between Coolum and Peregian Beach, the Emu Mountain Summit Walk is a short hike with HUGE rewards. It kinda goes without saying that you’ll get great views from most mountains around here, but the stunning sights of the region’s mountain peaks, such as our majestic Mount Coolum, are just another perk. Make sure you also stop and smell the roses, literally… Emu Mountain is home to some beautiful flora! Perfect for a sunny autumn Sunday, we reckon.

Opunake Walkway
T
he Opunake Walkway is the longest of the formal South Taranaki walks and takes you through beautiful lake and beach scenery. It travels around Opunake Lake and across the cliffs, providing views of Te Namu Pa, Mt Taranaki and the rugged coastline. The lake is popular for boating, swimming and water skiing The walk can be started from a number of easily accessible points but if you wish to complete the whole walk, the best place to begin is by the boat ramp at the Opunake Lake (Layard St). Along this walk you will find many points of great historic and environmental interest, including: Opunake Lake The lake is used to provide hydroelectricity. It was once a vegetable garden used to supply the Armed Constabulary and early settlers. There are public toilets at this stop for your use. Armed Constabulary Cemetery The cemetery is located on the headland that juts into the lake. It has four his-

Waiaua River Mouth This is a muststop location – it will offer you extraordinary views of Taranaki’s dynamic coastline. The Cottage Hospital The hospital was the birthplace of many famous New Zealanders including runner Peter Snell.

The Lion’s Lookout The lookout is located next to the ramp by the old wharf and offers clear views of the Taranaki Bight. Middleton Bay has a boat ramp for easy launching, though it is not a safe swimming beach. Te Namu Pa The pa is visible from the northern end of the walkway and is an extremely important site in Taranaki. It was the location of a famous battle where Wiremu Kingi Matakatea repelled 800 Waikato Maori and successfully withstood a month-long siege armed with a single rifle. Addington cycleway opens
C
hristchurch residents have a new travel option to get around Addington and into town when Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Transport Minister Hon Simon Bridges opened the Little River Link cycleway last month. The Little River Link cycleway runs from Hagley Park across Moorhouse Avenue and along Grove Road, Collins Street and Jerrold Street before connecting to the shared path that runs alongside the Southern Motorway. Cycle crossings have also been installed where the motorway crosses Lincoln Road and Wrights Road. “The first of a network of cycleways opening is an exciting moment for the city,” says Lianne Dalziel. “Postearthquakes a more cycle friendly city ranked among the most common themes that came up, so it great to see a safe and attractive cycle network starting to emerge.” “Over the next few months we will see the completion of the Papanui Parallel, Uni–Cycle and the first stage of the Rapanui – Shag Rock Cycleway routes. Work will also start on the Quarryman’s Trail, Northern Line and the second stage of the Rapanui – Shag Rock Cycleway.” “As these routes roll out we will start to see more people drawn towards riding a bike. All of these routes offer attractive rides and good connections to destinations around the city.” The Little River Link involved the construction of 1,800 metres of new cycleway, stormwater and carriageway improvements. It is a key connection that will eventually see a cycle trail all the way out to the already popular Little River Rail Trail. Manuka Cottage Community Development Manager Cherylan Davies says, “It has been great to see the community get behind the cycleway and a genuine effort to engage with the community from the designers and constructors.” “The cycleway will help the neighbourhood to be a safe place to travel through whether you are driving, walking or biking.” www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Volunteering their way around the country - a holiday with a purpose

on and Maureen Cooper, a retired couple from Whangarei, make the journey south with their caravan each year for a unique holiday experience. They get to set up camp in some of the country’s most picturesque DOC campsites for a week or more, without having to pay. Welcome to the life and times of a DOC volunteer camp host. On their travels, the Cooper’s have spent several summers in the Milford Sound area and this summer visited

Marlborough staying at Kenepuru Heads and Whites Bay camp grounds. Another adventurous volunteering couple, Allan and Liz Preece, return repeatedly to their favourite location, Molesworth Station. Being the original volunteers at Molesworth, they now take on the lead volunteer role and find this challenging and rewarding because it entails far more than the average camp host duties and responsibilities. For the Preeces their enjoyment of the outdoors and helping people provides many volunteer opportunities, giving them tremendous satisfaction. Volunteering for DOC comes in all sorts of packages and can be anything from a campsite host or hut warden to wildlife volunteer or working on restoration projects. While there is no financial payment, there are ample other returns for volunteers that make the experience rich with new skills, friends and memories. Perhaps, like these two couples, your next holiday could be planned around this new experience. With voluntary opportunities throughout the country, there are plenty of options and locations to choose from. Some locations come with accommodation provided, for example in Marlborough the Whites Bay camp hosts can stay in a comfortable historic cottage on site and at the Above: Picturesque Molesworth Station. two locations in Molesworth Station a small rangers hut is available. Other places provide a free campsite for your tent, caravan or campervan. There is an application process, much like applying for any other job. You’ll need to submit an application form and have references that can be checked. It’s also handy to come with other skills as there is often an opportunity to turn your hand to some general maintenance tasks. It pays to not be too precious either as yes, cleaning toilets usually comes with the role! Allan Preece finds that while outdoor skills and experience are useful, the essential skills are the ability of the volunteer to interact positively with the public and other team members. Both couples find the interaction with the public the most enjoyable part of being a DOC volunteer as they get to meet all kinds of people from NZ and overseas. This of course wouldn’t suit everyone. Humour, patience and friendliness are essential attributes say the Coopers. A tactful, helpful and positive outlook also go a long way add the Preeces. People choose to volunteer for DOC for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to conservation and the community and to make a difference to people’s experiences who visit these unique places. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Whatever the motivation, for people like the Coopers and Preeces, the alignment with DOC values is key. The Coopers, who are both in their early seventies, find that volunteering at DOC campsites (and seeking out the local golf course) is a great way to keep young and fit. The expectation is that volunteers spend about four hours a day working which involves information sharing, fee collection, radio communication and cleaning facilities. This leaves plenty of hours in the day for personal exploring in the wider area. Volunteers are typically needed from December to February, however several locations require volunteers outside of these core summer months. A commitment of one to four weeks is standard. Working as a camp host is just one way that DOC benefits tremendously from volunteers. We couldn’t do it without them, and, from the stories we hear from many like the Coopers and Preeces, it is a rich and rewarding experience for them. This mutual benefit is what makes volunteering such a great thing for recreation and conservation. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
Christchurch has taken out the inaugural Top Town Award in the NZ Transport Agency’s annual Favourite Places to Ride competition. Christchurch’s win was announced last month by Transport Minister Simon Bridges and follows significant investment by the Christchurch City Council and the Government in urban cycleways. A network of 13 major cycleways is currently being built across Christchurch. “The competition was close, with Christchurch beating Rotorua and Wellington to take the top title,’’ Mr Bridges said. The Top Town Award was determined by the city or town that received the most nominations across three of the Favourite Places to Ride categories - Urban Ride, Off-Road or Adventure Ride and Community Facility. The Urban Ride category winner was Taupo’s Great Lake Walkway, followed by Wellington’s ‘Around the Bays’. This category recognises rides around towns and cities including new urban cycleways and shared paths. The top New Zealand Cycle Trail was taken out by Otago Central Rail Trail for the second year in a row, with close competition from Old Ghost Road. Rotorua’s The Redwoods – Whakarewarewa Forest was winner of the Off-Road or Adventure ride for the second year in a row. This category includes off-road trails and mountain bike tracks. The Community Facility category, a new addition for 2017, was won by Avanti Velodrome, followed closely by Kids Bike Taupo. New Zealanders made close to 10,000 nominations for around 1200 different rides across the four categories. “It’s great to see such widespread participation in the competition from the far north to the deep south of New Zealand. It shows that it is not just our world-class cycle trails that are proving popular, but that more and more of us are utilising the growing number of urban cycleways routes around the country and choosing to make every day trips by bike,’’ Mr Bridges said. “Over 60 per cent of urban New Zealanders think cycling is a good way to get around easily and efficiently. By celebrating New Zealanders’ favourite cycling routes from around the country we’re helping to encourage more people to get out on their bikes more often.’’
