Wilderness trail becomes easier to get to
One of Australia’s premier eco tourism destinations is becoming easier to visit thanks an airport expansion that has attracted direct flights from Qantas. Kangaroo Island is just 200 kilometres from the South Australia capital of Adelaide but was only accessible by ferry or limited air services. An AUD $18 million upgrade of the Kangaroo Island runway and terminal has allowed Qantas to offer direct flights from Adelaide and Melbourne during the island’s busy summer months. The flights will commence from December 2017, as part of an agreement between Qantas, the South Australian Government, Kangaroo Island Council and Adelaide Airport Limited. “Kangaroo Island is already one of our State’s most popular destinations and now thousands more people will get to experience one of our great natural wonders,” said South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill. “The Island is world-renowned for its premium food and wine and is the ultimate taste of Australia for visitors with its abundant wildlife.” “Kangaroo Island is a must-see destination for visitors to South Australia. It’s truly one of the most spectacular places to visit in Australia due to its rugged landscape and abundance of wildlife,” Young said. The airport upgrade and increased flights come as more tourists are expected to experience the $5.8 million Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, which opened last year and was ranked third on Lonely Planet’s list of top new travel destinations for 2017.
Leave seals alone – they’re just resting
Above: New Zealand fur seal/kekeno. Photo by andrewwalmsleyphotography.com The Department of Conservation (DOC) is reminding the public to leave seals alone to rest. East Coast Operations Manager, John Lucas says he is concerned about reports of an incident recently where a group of people with a dog chased a seal near Midway beach, Gisborne. Seals are protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act and this sort of harassment is unacceptable. “This could have also resulted in a severe injury and it is a timely reminder that seals are wild animals, so don’t get too close.” “I must stress to keep at a distance of at least 20 metres and ensure dogs are on a leash” he said. “It is not unusual for seals to be seen at this time of the year. In the coming months between August to November newlyweaned fur seal pups and juveniles come ashore, but it’s just a resting up period for them before they head out to sea again in search of food.” “The seals may look distressed and scrawny and display signs of sneezing, coughing and may have weepy eyes, but that’s just natural for them and they really don’t need any human intervention. They will return to the water and swim away when they are rested and ready to go.” John says while seals may look harmless and helpless they are wild animals and will defend themselves if they feel threatened. They can carry infectious diseases and can cause serious injuries. DOC has a hands-off policy with seals and will only intervene if a seal is obviously severely injured, is entangled in marine debris or is in a dangerous place such as on or near a public road. In that case, people could call the 24-hour DOCHOTLINE (0800 362 468).
Woman conquers 20 peaks in record time Helen Bonsor sets a new women’s world record for the “Tranter’s Round” in Scotland. The Mammut Pro Team athlete from the Lake District conqueres the 63 km route with its 6,100 m of ascent and descent in only 12 hours and 25 minutes on Friday, July 14, 2017. Bonsor is currently the fastest woman to complete this varied and challenging route. Named after its original vanquisher, Phillip Tranter, the “Tranter’s Round” boasts no fewer than 20 sizeable peaks across two chains of peaks and is still considered to be a 24-hour tour. Helen Bonsor starts the tour at 05:57 a.m. and achieves her objective of completing the circuit in a little over half of the original time at 06:22 p.m.

Walk talk Artist creates outdoor gathering space for Camp Glenorchy
Island now a Dark Sky Sanctuary Great Barrier Island, 100 kilometres north-east of central Auckland, is the first island in the world to be designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in a bid to protect its night skies for present and future generations. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) established the International Dark Sky Places conservation programme in 2001 to recognise ‘excellent stewardship of the night sky’. Designations are based on scientifically measured darkness of sky as well as stringent outdoor lighting standards and innovative community outreach. The application for the international sanctuary status was lodged by the Great Barrier Local Board with support from Auckland Council, Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED), Department of Conservation, iwi, the Auckland Astronomical Society, and Auckland Central MP, Nikki Kaye. Mayor Phil Goff says Great Barrier Island is home to a community focused on protecting and preserving its natural beauty, which makes it the ideal location to receive International Dark Sky Sanctuary status. ‘Great Barrier Island is a place of rugged beauty and untouched wilderness, and is one of the most tranquil and unspoilt places in the wider Auckland region.’ he says.

Dan Kelly – local artist, designer, sculptor, avalanche specialist and wearable arts designer – is creating the central outdoor gathering place for New Zealand’s first Net Zero Energy campground, located in Glenorchy. With the roots in Glenorchy’s natural and cultural history, the new campfire shelter will include details from the Scheelite mine that once operated in the surrounding mountains. The Scheelite Campfire Shelter and Cookhouse is being hand-constructed by the artist using large ancient stones, recycled timbers and the remnants of an old scheelite mining trolley and railway track. The shelter consists of a large 26m long by 5.5m high stone fireplace, complemented by a mobile brazier BBQ to be made from an old mining trolley. A kinetic water sculpture, inspired by the old water-driven scheelite ore battery stamper once positioned at Glenorchy Batter on Mt Judah, will be built into the shelter to collect rainwater, with additional overflow directed to the adjacent wetland. Debbi Brainerd, who with her husband Paul are the founders of Camp Glenorchy, adds, “This shelter is a wonderful example of how having a talented local artist such as Dan can combine extraordinary natural beauty with cultural and historical details that will make the campfire shelter the ‘jewel’ of Camp Glenorchy. It will be a beautiful juxtaposition to the more traditional-looking energy efficient buildings adjacent to the structure. “Our goal is to create an indoor-outdoor space that allows guests to interact with nature, while providing shade as well as shelter from sun and wind,” she said. “The shelter will create an outdoor gathering place with lots of character, where guests and visitors can come together to share stories of their experiences tramping in the surrounding mountains and travelling in this beautiful place.” Information about Dan Kelly’s Scheelite Campfire Shelter is posted on large display panels next to Mrs Woolly’s General Store and on the Camp Glenorchy website at www.CampGlenorchy.co.nz. Camp Glenorchy is slated to open in late 2017. Walking New Zealand, issue no 237 - 2017

Charleston - a hidden gem on By Bill Freeth

harleston is one of those small South Island West Coast communities that most will drive through, their mindset on Westport or south to Punakaiki. Or, as we had done on a couple of trips, pulled into the well- sited car park for a morning tea or lunch break. This year, we decided to make it a two or three days “destination.” And we weren’t disappointed ! The first sight of a relatively new three story Adventure Tourism building decked out in Rust Red and Mustard colours dominated the sight lines as a jarring contrast to the soft pallet of nature, but who are we to make judgement? We were going to be staying at the older style Charleston Holiday Park and Motor camp 100m along the main road. Very spacious, well equipped, owned and operated by an extremely friendly and helpful couple. They provided excellent advice and a comprehensive map to ensure we would get plenty of exercise tramping around the recognised good spots. Without their briefing, we would probably have missed so much! Our first surprise was to see signs around indicating that Charleston had celebrated its 150th Birthday last year, and whereas a community hall, motel, the Tourism Centre and Cafe plus a Above right: Entrance to Joyce Bay. small number of houses make up the community today, it had once been a thriving town of around 4000 to 7,000 inhabitants in its gold-mining days and serviced by possibly 40 to 90 hotels. Different sources/differing figures. A Google search for Charleston rewards with many photos of early days in Wikipedia and the history pages. There are a couple of nearby historical cemetries which are reasonably handy. Dating back to the late 1860’s, of particular interest is the nationality and faith of some of those early settlers as well as the fact that drowning was often the cause of their demise. A special place that rests in its own peaceful isolation. One can carry on this walk down to the Nile River Bridge before completing a circuit and return on the road back to the motel, tourism centre and holiday park. Not far away are the two small bays with their evocative names of “Constant”and “Joyce”. Rocky headlands with their encompassing arms provide a certain amount of protection against the strength of the marching Opposite page above left: Striated rocks in pastel hues. Charleston - a hidden gem on our wild West Coast Tasman waves. The two beaches are sandy, and the tumble rolled stones provide interest for those of a rock-hounding bent – us included. We are gob-smacked to learn that trading schooners used to visit “Constant” in those early days, often coming from as far away as Onehunga, on the Manakau, Apparently, they used to drop anchor off shore, then be manually oared into the confines of this little harbour. Of course weather and waves were a major consideration and to assist, the middle headland, almost in itself an island, was under the control of a “Harbourmaster” who would raise a coloured flag on a flagstaff to indicate the entrance swell and wave conditions. The flagstaff track access is a little difficult to locate but is well worth the effort. There is an informative plaque
near the base of the flagstaff which outlines an almost unbelievable maritime history and the number of those old sailing boats that could be in the harbour at one time. If you are feeling romantic or maybe reflective, it is a wonderful spot from which to watch the sun drop down into the sea as evening descends, the advancing swells providing an ever changing foreground as they dash their energy on the rocks in a white cauldron. The road off SH7, between the hall and the Holiday Park has the interesting name of “Darkie Terrace Road”. A no-exit road, maybe 7km long, where you will come to a closed gate. Do not be deterred, as this is primarily to keep the sheep in a paddock. There is ample parking 200m further on. This is not a well known area apart from the adventure tourism company which takes tourists

on some of their adventures such as a Rain Forest Train Trip, a visit to the glow-worm cave or underground rafting in wetsuit and inflated tubes. We opted for the walk/tramp along the banks of the Nile River, through large stands of native bush to cross the suspension bridge and end at the entrance to the glow worm cave. Some brochures describe the area as part of the Paparoa National Park. The bush is certainly attractive and it shares the same type of limestone structures as are found near the better known Punakaike. But without the crowds. Apart from sheep, and the small train on its trip, we never saw another person. There is one more must see. Heading north on SH6, about 500m past the motel and tourist venture, you will drive down a slight hill to cross the Nile River Bridge. Immediately, take a left into Beach Road. A gravel road which will

take you around the edge of a very scenic area. There are a few houses fronting a compact anchorage where ships used to frequent, before departing through the river mouth out into the ocean. Some of the Charleston history pages carry photos of such vessels. You have now reached another beach/bay named Nile Mile Beach. At the southern end, where the river meets the sea, the occasional fisherman casts a line, but for us, the real point of interest was the large multi hued Opposite page below left: Soaring limstone cliffs with an aged tree in front. rocks unlike anything else we have seen around our coastline. Not only the muted patterned colours but also with the presumably quartz crystals glittering like diamonds in the sunshine. The beach itself has extensive areas of coloured stones, pure white crystal, yellows, multi greys, pinks, speckled, half”n’half, amazing. At the northern end of the beach there is an access way from the rocks, where you will scramble up to get an all round view. The highlight is at the seaward end where a short timber bridge hangs desperately onto the rocks to enable access over a narrow wave-swept gut to “Hamptons Rock”, a local fishing spot. Whilst the narrow bridge is only about 3m long, we chicken out on crossing due to the huge waves that were venting their fury as they swept under
the bridge. Beach Road carries on for a few kilometres before coming out back on SH6, turn left for Westport. The best part is that most travellers stay on the highway, so Beach Road, and Nile Mile Beach are left relatively free of the hordes of tourists that clog so much of our wonderful West Coast. There are three or four other attractions that we would have liked to have explored...maybe another day. But of one thing we are quite certain. We have never travelled to anywhere in New Zealand where we have been as pleasantly surprised at the variety and quality of attractions that Charleston offers. The walks are mostly short, about 60 minutes, with the Nile River up to Glowworm Cave about a comfortable three hour return. Go see for yourself!. And tell us what we missed!

oven. Why would anyone want to walk along those baking exposed hills? Lovely views, but ........ However, my opinion changed after reading a brochure at the i-site at Paraparaumu. Yes - do it! Wellington’s public transport is the envy of Aucklanders and none more so than the electric units serving the Kapiti Coast as far as Waikanae. I took the train to Paekakariki one sparkling clear morning brandishing my Gold Card. No inconvenient HOP card required. The 1km walk to the start of the track led me through the quaint little latte village and along a quiet residential street adjacent to the interesting untamed coast. The narrow 10km track gradually gained height to a maximum 200m above sea level. Some people were obviously using it as a training run - no doubt locals who were immune to the stunning scenery below and beyond. Far below was the railway line snaking its way along the contours, with the parallel road following the same. The constant traffic moved north and south in silent momentum. The rocky shoreline created another boundary before looking out across to lofty Kapiti Island dominating the horizon. Magnificent. Especially on a sunny calm morning With such a perspective I could understand though, why the brochure

had read about the opening of the latest section of the Te Araroa Trail on the Kapiti Coast. The Paekakariki Escarpment Track. It sounded interesting and I was familiar with the area, so I added it to my list of things to do during a week’s
holiday in Plimmerton, further down the Coast. On the drive to Plimmerton I looked up at the steep-sided tawny hills rising above SH1 and the railway line. It was a stifling hot day with the mercury rising to 30 degrees. The heat seemed to hit the hillsides and bounce back like a fan

warns people with a fear of heights to avoid the track. Also it is unsuitable for young children. In parts the terrain is rocky, steep and narrow with no handrails. However there are seats at various scenic spots along the way ( it’s all scenic) and a sheltered lunch area in one of the forested gullies. Information boards tell of the history of this coast and its development and importance in pre and post European settlement. On the southern half there are two impressive swing bridges spanning deep valleys, both providing more photo opportunities. The track gradually

descends to Pukerua Bay where a 2km walk takes you to the railway station. Of course the track can be done in reverse - either way, it is preferable to go in the same wind direction if the weather is showing its true Wellington colours. I’m so glad I did it! A favourite walkaccessible, challenging, spectacular, scenic and easily fitted into a holiday programme. Well done Te Araroa.

That was Bream Head Walks, run by the Pearsons on Ody Road, Bream Head near Whangarei. We arrived late afternoon on quite a miserable day and it was lovely to walk into a warm comfortable lodge. Well more a home really with all the modern conveniences and such lovely soft carpet. After a hot drink we settled in. Claire had left before dinner snacks and www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz
a day’s menu with instructions on what to do with the food left for our evening meal, breakfast and lunch. This occurred every day. If you do these walks you are given a track guide and map/ ornithological notes.

We set off next morning in unsettled weather to walk the Day One: Ody Road/ Ocean Beach. It was a fairly bracing walk and a great day for photographing. The colours were gorgeous. The other three picked up rubbish along the beach while I took photos. Watching the petterel was fascinating. They are tiny, quite camouflaged and move quickly. Claire picked us up at Ocean Beach and we went home for a hot shower or in my case an outside bubble bath with epsom salts to soothe the muscles. Day two we opted to go from Ocean Road to Peach Cove Road as whiteheads were being released at about 3pm on the track up from the Peach Road car park. The track up from Ocean Bay to the Bream Head lookout (476m) is fairly steep with many steps. We stopped to look back at the views of the shore line, the Whangarei Harbour and out to the lighthouse. After stopping at the notice board we took the loop track round to the remains of the naval radar station. After lunching at the Bream Head lookout we ambled on past the Peach

Cove car park turn off to the top of the steps to Peach Cove but decided we wouldn’t have enough time to go down the 823 steps and be back in time for the bird release. We back tracked and waited at the release point. What a treat that was! About 100 birds. Day three : Mt. Manaia/Mt Aubrey. Tupare Gardens - New Plymouth

wned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council Tupare Gardens is situated in the outskirts of New Plymouth and is a landscaped Garden of National Significance.
Consisting of 11 acres it was built in 1932 by Russell Matthews and his family. Over many years they developed these beautiful gardens situated in a valley and raised their children there. The house is of the English style of James Chapman Taylor and is now used
for tours and events. It is a magical Arts and Crafts garden and there is a regular programme of public events during the summer season which caters for garden fairs and a series of horticultural workshops. Lady Matthew’s legacy is a domestic glasshouse, a herbery and perennial cottage lawn borders. Sir Russell planted stately trees which have given a pleasant atmosphere and framework for the property, they include redwoods, deciduous maples, copper beeches and many other flowering species. There are garden rooms, a large glasshouse and a gardeners cottage, large lawn area’s, several water features one being a delightful fish pond with a small waterfall that trickles down into another small pond beside a winding path leading down to a large flat paddock. There are free gas barbecues, seats Above: Part of the garden area. Taranaki Tupare is the pond and waterfall garden. Below left: The Gardeners Cottage now an information centre.

and a table for those who would like to picnic in this tranquil tree sheltered area and where the Waiwhakaiho River at the bottom flows past to the sea. This is also a popular swimming spot in the summer months. This river flat area retains a pastoral area with plantings of specimen trees. There is also access down to the paddock area via several delightful little narrow rustic bush paths on either side of the house, both are steep and winding and if you are not confident best to use the main path to the left of the fish pond. The beautiful little Gardeners Cottage is constructed from recycled material from the original home that was where the tennis court is now situated. The Gardeners Cottage is now the information Centre and the meeting point for garden workshops. The history is stored in this cottage and is well worth the time spent in there perusing through this most interesting era of early photos and the development of the land, gardens and housing quarters. When walking through this charming English styled garden it is not unusual to spot the family of resident quails, tui’s in the trees busily feeding on nectar and little fantails flitting busily around collecting stirred up insects at certain times of different seasons. Tupare is beautiful in all four seasons even in the winter months when growth has slowed and many plants are dormant there is a special charm in the bare branches, colourful winter plants, and fallen yellow leaves matted around Above right: Spring in Tupare. the base of the trunks of the trees. A place of tranquillity, peace and English charm it is certainly worth a visit. Because it is situated in a valley and some of the paths are on the steep hillside it may be challenging for some, but there are equally flat areas as well to enjoy. There are many paths to walk along and some are quite steep with stairs. It is a rather steep climb to get back to the parking area up on the road. This walk could be quite challenging for some due to the fact that many of the gardens are on the hillside. Situated at 487 Mangorei Road New Plymouth it is open daily and entry is free. There is a regular programme of public events and house tours are available during the high season from October to March at 11 am on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday or are available by prior arrangement. There is a reasonable sized parking area off the road next to the entrance of Tupare and a small area down the hill drive way by the tennis courts for disabled parking. A phone call can confirm if it is available. 06 759 0897 or 0800 639 759. Email enquiries@npcd.govt.nz There are toilets, a playground and wheelchair access. Te Araroa Trail
What makes the QC Track
from great to awesome
T
he Queen Charlotte Track, while not an official Great Walk, is considered pretty great by the thousands of walkers and mountain bikers that experience all or part of it each year. But what makes it truly special, is the plethora of partnerships that turn the track from great to awesome... The 70 kilometre track could almost be considered one of DOC’s original partnerships, with its management involving the Marlborough District Council and 10 private landowners. The landowners are represented by the Queen Charlotte Track Landowners Co-operative who work closely with DOC and Marlborough District Council in maintaining the track. The landowners were the driving force in creating the track. In the early 1980s the Commissioner of Crown Lands proposed the idea of a track along the Kenepuru Ridge to landowner Rod Eatwell, and much of the work to form the walkway was done by Rod and his neighbours. By 1985 funding became scarce and parts of the track were closed. Undeterred, the landowners continued to keep the section between Black Rock and Punga Cove free of gorse. The landowners continue today to look at ways of enhancing visitor’s experience, and have provided seats, tables and signs, all in the landowner cooperative’s unique style. Alongside DOC and the Queen Charlotte Track Landowners Co-operative, sits the QCTInc. This is the marketing arm for track operators who provide accommodation, food, guiding companies and water taxi’s, and they do a fantastic job at promoting the track. DOC is also currently completing a three-year partnership with Yealands Family Wines who have sponsored $75,000 for interpretation panels and website stories for the track. They have also provided over $30,000 a year from sales of its new ECO wine range to support biosecurity on predator-free islands in the Marlborough Sounds. The new interpretation project is based on the idea of consultation. Designer Janet Bathgate has come up with a complex jigsaw of stories based around the landscape features people could see from the numerous lookouts along the track. The result is stunning – over 50 stories are carefully interwoven around 3D maps. Approximately 12,000 visitors walk or bike the entire Queen Charlotte Track, and many more visit smaller sections as it travels alongside the Queen Charlotte Sound. These track users probably remain largely oblivious to the intricate relationships that make the track work, but the scenery and assets along the track will provide them with a unique experience they will remember long after the blisters heal. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

n cold clear weather members of the Wednesday Wilderness Walkers, a group within the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club, walked the Kaiparoro Trig Tramp in the Wairarapa starting at Kaiparoro Road. We crossed the river via a temporary steel girder logging bridge and headed up a very steep bulldozed track. This narrowed after about half an hour, leaving forestry and entering bush. The track remains steep and a little greasy until we reached the trig turnoff (50mins). The next hour meanders pleasantly uphill through attractive beech forest until we reach the bush edge, and 5 minutes later, the trig. The area is in a state of vegetational change.
It was once predominantly red tussock but is now mixed with waist deep celery pine, manuka and dracophyllum. The surrounding peaks were brilliantly clear on arrival but slowly disappeared into low cloud and mist. We backtracked to just into the bush and then headed off track down the first southerly spur to a 1952 plane crash and grave. The route is adequately marked and takes about 25 minutes to get there. Care is required coming back but all returned safely. The crash site is a sombre site and strewn over 50m. We left exploration of tarns on the tops due to the clag that had set in. Lunch was in the bush folAbove: Congestion at the Kaiparoro Trig. Below: Snacking in the bush.

n August we crossed the European Alps, from Obersdorf in Bavaria, through Austria and Switzerland, to end up in Northern Italy. This walk offered some of the most awesome scenery we have ever seen, with amazing variations in both weather and outlook within a day. At times we walked through rain, sleet and 40cms of snow, but when we reached lower altitudes the temperatures soared to the 30’s. We went with a group of ‘UK Ramblers,’ who I would thoroughly recommend. Meeting in Munich, we journeyed by train to Sonthofen, a resort in south Bavaria. After spending the night there, we travelled to Obersdorf to begin walking.
The first day took us over alpine pastures, and through beech forest with wafting aromas of peppermint, thyme, and marjoram. Wa l k i n g u p the Tretachtal, we climbed a narrow By Barbz Lowther trail high above the river hanging onto wire ropes fixed to the rock face. Lots of waterfalls flowed over the track and a huge variety of wild flowers blossomed in every nook. There were larkspur, gentian, aconite coltsfoot, butterbur and harebells - to name but a few. All day, we were accompanied by the clonkle of cow bells, and magnificent
views over the snow capped Alps. We reached Kemptner Hut mid afternoon. It was more like a hotel, than the tramping huts that we know. The bar was the focal point, and a four course meal was served at 7.00pm. This was the pattern in all the huts we stayed in. Day 2 dawned with brilliant blue Above: left: A groupo at the Grozechhopt (3048m) Above riight: Holzgau a pretty little Austrian ski resort. 30

skies. We climbed 20 minutes up to Madelejoch, a pass on the border with Austria. Then an easy downhill walk through Pines, took us to Holzgau, an Austrian ski village. After a bus ride up the valley, we followed a steep track, for 800 metres, over limestone and shale to reach Kaiserjoch Haus (2310m) by 5.00pm. Here the scenery was spectacular - mountain peaks as far as you could see, in every direction. After another delicious meal finished with apple strudel and ice cream, we were entertained by the hut warden playing us local tunes on his piano accordion . The next morning started with a clamber up ‘Grieskopt’- a local peak, before heading off to ‘Leutkircher Hut’ at 2,251m. It was a misty morning, with lots of goats and marmots near the track. We followed an undulating stony path across hillsides oozing water, and sprinkled with prickly thistles, and blue flowers. As the trail climbed steeply, we again used wire ropes and metal stairs to negotiate very narrow ledges and rocky outcrops. Gradually the rain became heavier, the clouds moved in, and peaks appeared and vanished at whim. As the sky cleared for a moment, five chamois appeared on the headland opposite. They stood proud for a couple of minutes before vanishing down the other side. As waves of mist moved across the Opposite page: The Kaisertal in Austria. mountainside, we had glimpses of the valley floor below, bathed in sunlight. It was a great lift to our spirits. We continued along the trail until a steep path led down to Leutkircher Hut, where frankfurters floating in a bowl of thick soup, were a good revival. On Day 4 we began by wandering along the Lechtal Alps on a lovely mountain track bordered by erica and arnica. The track climbed steeply, along a narrow ledge for about an hour, and we clung to a wire rope, edging along a sheer drop. When at last we reached Matunjoch (a pass), we sat in warm sun enjoying the view. Five minutes later, as we headed
for Ulmer Hut, the weather changed dramatically. An icy wind blew in thick mountain mist, and we had to scramble to reach the warm hut, for a lunch break. We continued on down a 4-wheel drive track to a guesthouse in St Anton, where, all our clothes were washed and dried for us - a totally unexpected treat. The next day, after a short bus ride along the valley to Pettneu, we walked up the Malfonbach. A big gentle house cow wandered up to us, leaving a lovely lingering warm milky smell. Just round the corner we came to Malfon Alm, where we enjoyed hot chocolate made with her milk. The track then left the river, and

climbed steeply over rocks and stones, beside waterfalls and numerous streams plunging down to the river. In places the trail became a waterway, and we had to clamber over boulders daubed with red paint, to avoid walking ankle deep in icy water. When we reached Edmund Graf Hut mid afternoon, we found the tops covered in fresh snow, and by 4.30pm it was snowing steadily. We woke in the morning to a ‘Wonderland’ A blanket of snow covered
everything. It was absolutely beautiful. In the afternoon we climbed a local peak - Koher Riffler (3,168m). Only photos can describe the beauty! A rocky trail led to ‘Boulder Hopping’, and higher up, we were walking through 20cms of snow. The view was well worth the effort. On the way back down, the snow had started to melt, and wild flowers were popping through. We returned to the hut and sat in the sun enjoying a beer in a near perfect world.

Our next day began with crunching on ice and trekking past clumps of half melted snow as we climbed to Kappler Joch.(a pass) As we headed down the other side, we passed a herd of ibex, quite unconcerned by our ‘invasion’. The trail, marked by the alpine club’s red and white stripes, took us over rocky terrain, past two beautiful deep blue lakes, and open grasslands where rivulets raced down to the stream below. We then took a high level track, which gave us lovely views, and led along a mountain road to Alpengasthof in Dias. A cable car took us down to Kappl and a short bus trip to Ishgl. That evening we attended a concert by the local military band. Brass bands are an important part of Austrian life, and most villages in this area have their own band. Day 8 began with an explanation of the intracasies of ‘Menger’s Sponge’An interesting theory of an Austrian Above: Lovely views of the lake in at Dias, Austria. Germany to Austria to Switzerland to Italy Mathmetician - Karl Menger. Then after a bus ride to Mathon, we wandered up the Lorein Valley, to Zollwache Hut - an old customs watch house. The afternoon was spent walking over grassy mountainsides to Ritzenjoch - a pass on the Austrian/Swiss Border. From here we had stunning views across the upper Fimbatal, before con-
tinuing on down, past whistling marmots and very friendly horses, to reach Heildelberger Hut. This hut is ringed by 3000 mountain peaks which look magic when coated with snow. Next day was a rest day - no big packs. So we had a wonderful time exploring two glaciers, and climbing up Gronzeckopf (3,048m) and Breitekrone
(3,079m). It was incredibly beautiful country. High mountains in every direction, and the snow covered the Bernina Range in the distance. There were so many interesting shaped peaks, and the higher we climbed the more peaks were visible. We spent a couple of hours admiring the scenery, then made our way back down, stopping at a little tarn ringed with cotton grass, to watch big spotty frogs. The evening was spent chatting to other walkers and mountain bikers and enjoying the local brew. Day 10 started with a climb over alpine pasture to Fimber Pass (2,608m) then steeply downhill to Tschoffla. From there the trail leveled and followed the river to Griosch. Because many mountain bikers were using the trail, we took a steep alternative route to Ramosch, again with wildflowers all the way. The following day promised to be hard, 1,200m uphill in the heat! But the gods were on our side. It rained all Above: Walking down to the Heildieburger Hut in Switzerland. Below left: Barbz and Derek at top of the mountains in the alps.

night and until 10.00am. Postponing our departure time, we walked in lovely cool conditions, with all the vegetation washed bright green. Starting on a wide path to an alpine farm, the trail became rougher and steeper as it climbed up through larch and spruce trees to the spectacular Uina Gorge. Here we used wire ropes again, as we made our way along a narrow path, with tunnels carved through the rock. It was an impressive section of track. The rain had made the river especially dramatic as it raged through the gorge. Once through, we followed a path over pasture land across the border into Italy, where we walked to Sesvenna Hut. Next morning was another free day, so we left early and climbed Rasass Spitz. We sat on the tops for an hour or so, just enjoying the incredible views of ‘Peaks Forever’, and aware that this was near the end of 14 magic days. Above right: In the Uina Gorge in Switzerland. Day 13 was a day to be remembered -- Just like the alps in story books, blue skies puffy white clouds, alpine meadows, loads of wild flowers, cows with clonky bells, beautiful horses, and a wide easy grade path. We climbed half an hour to our last pass, then it was downhill all the way, first over pasture then through spruce forest with thickets of ripe raspberries. We reached the South Tyrol village of Burgeis at mid day. Sitting on a hotel balcony with spectacular views over the entire area, we relaxed over lunch, with a glass of wine. Our last leg was a short walk to the railway station at Mals, where we caught a train to Merano Youth Hostel. The final day we visited Bolzano, then Verona, where we spent several hours wandering around this lovely city before flying back to UK. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who is reasonably fit, and loves adventure. Our Ramblers Guide was excellent. The mountains are incredibly beautiful, the scenery is varied - meadows full of flowers, stark scree, glaciers, larch and spruce forests - it’s all there. The weather keeps you guess-
ing, the food is absolutely scrumptious, and the huts and staff are warm and welcoming. Details of this trip can be found online - www.ramblersholidays.co.uk Across the Alps.

Books
New Zealand on Foot By Denis Dwyer
A Walk a Day: 365 Short Walks in New Zealand
Retired teacher, journalist and keen walker Denis Dwyer devised a plan to rediscover his own country by embarking on a series of more than 200 day walks. He covered a vast array of landscapes: from kauri forests to volcanoes, parks and streets, old battle sites, wetlands and gardens, mountains, a crater rim and the floor of an inferno. In Bill Bryson style, Dwyer includes wry observations on place, history and people and incidents encountered, often with good-natured humour. Part-walking guide, part-travel narrative, this entertaining book also stresses the importance of conserving our walkways and preserving the environment for future generations.
By Peter Janssen
Keen outdoorsman and author Peter Janssen’s popular guide to short walks around the country has been revised and updated to include 12 new entries. With every walk in the book able to be completed in under three hours, it suits anyone who enjoys walking but is short on time or doesn’t want a long tramp with heavy boots and a pack. Janssen combines essential details such as a summary of the route, access and walking times, with engaging descriptions and anecdotes on the history and points of interest along the tracks.

Wild Auckland By Peter Janssen
The Auckland region’s mild climate, rich soil and plethora of regional parks, rugged coastlines and inner city green spaces mean you don’t have to venture far to enjoy nature at its best. Peter Janssen rediscovered a fascination for his hometown and its dramatic landscape in his research to uncover 125 wild places around the Super City. Grouped into five areas and introducing seven special regional features, his book details walks and day trips, important flora, fauna and geology, lists facilities and provides directions. Most entries also include ‘nature notes’ that take a specific aspect of the wild area’s natural history and describe it in more detail.

We are looking for readers’ favourite New Zealand walks. Many of us go out regularly walking on a route which we class as our favourite, for a number of reasons. Perhaps because for it’s scenery, it’s safe, it’s challenging, it’s flat, it’s hilly, it’s varied, or for whatever reason. We would like you to tell us in your own words what is you favourite walk and why. Email us a story from say 250 up to 1200 words including a photo or photos. We will now give you a FREE subscription (six months or more, depending on the article), or extension to Walking New Zealand magazine for walks published.

. Waiheke Island Walking Festival something not to be missed
W
aiheke resident and avid walker, Hannah Griffiths, tells us why walking on Waiheke, particularly during the Waiheke Walking Festival which takes place this coming November, is something not to be missed. There are a multitude of reasons why Waiheke Island is fondly referred to as “the jewel in the gulf”. Its exceptional network of walking tracks and trails for those who like to explore our great outdoors on their own two feet is just one of them. I can’t count the number of times the island’s clement weather (usually at least a smidgen better than the mainland!) has tempted me to lace up my well-worn hiking boots or flashy sneakers (I’m a girl of extremes) and venture out to seriously work out, or just to wander, amongst its invigorating natural beauty. It never fails to surprise and delight me how diverse an experience you can enjoy on what is essentially, in the vast
scheme of things, rather a small rock. Spectacular, rugged coastline and heavenly white-sand beaches in picture-perfect bays are most definitely “Instaworthy”. Lush native bush, sprawling hills and rows of glistening vines stretching as far as the eye can see. To experience so much of the wild, untamed and untouched, juxtaposed with the perfectly planned, planted and polished is a sensual journey which nourishes the mind, body and soul in every way the heart can desire. Whilst our “Waihetian” (some prefer “Waihekean”) villages can be bustling, buzzing little havens full of life and laughter, walking here holds the key to discovering spots which induce a feeling of being stranded on your own desert paradise. Walking on Waiheke also provides a chance to indulge (or over-indulge), in the delectable, award-winning cuisine and wine available relatively guilt-free - and rather smugly I might add.

There’s simply nothing like rocking up to a beautiful vineyard restaurant, energised from the exertion of a brisk hike and high on fresh-air and settling yourself down at an outside table, soaking up even more of the magical surroundings whilst tucking into a well-earned plate of something delicious and a glass or three of some of the finest wines in the country! And the plethora of wineries and restaurants to choose from is exciting in itself. Whether it’s a magnificent Italian banquet in the peaceful, poplar-speckled valley at Poderi Crisci, a gourmet lunch overlooking the exquisite wonderland of Tantalus’ manicured grounds and immaculate, undulating vineyards, or tapas under the shimmering olive trees on Casita Miro’s popular private lawn. Having earned the right to spoil yourself by walking there just adds to the sense of satisfaction. And then there are the views. Whilst we don’t lay claim to any mountains on our rock, the vistas to be experienced www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

from our highest points are pretty breath-taking. It has been said that ‘the only thing flat about Waiheke is the map!’, so never fear, there’s certainly challenge a-plenty for the lion-hearted trampers amongst us. Whether you feel like taking on the heart-pumping ups and downs or prefer a gentle stroll, Waiheke has a walk to suit your goal, mood and schedule. From a barefoot stretch of the legs along the shore to relax and breathe mindfully or indeed a full day adventurehike which is sure to have one breathing heavily, the options to rejuvenate, revitalise and refresh are endless here. For a first taste of walking on our Island you can’t go past the Waiheke Walking Festival held each year in November. I

adore this Festival for many reasons. Its creative and thoughtful curation provide a rich reminder of the vast array of excellent walking options available on the Island and encourage more walkers to discover what a fantastic, unmissable destination it truly is. The Festival also inspires people – islanders themselves, mainlanders and tourists alike – to connect more deeply to Waiheke’s beautiful environment, fascinating history and colourful stories through the profound knowledge and passion of the local guides who lead each walk. Another real bonus is the privilege of being invited, exclusively via the Festival and the generosity of local private landowners, to set foot on and experience corners of Waiheke which are ordinarily inaccessible to the general public. And the cherry on top? Unlike most exclusive things in life, all of these guided walks are free of charge. Ultimately, being on Waiheke, whether tramping all over the place or
relaxing and indulging in the after-glow, is a treat for the senses. To be fully immersed in the glory of our natural landscape, with all of life’s pleasures, comforts and luxuries just around the next bend, is an experience like no other. I am so very grateful to be able to enjoy it every day. I’m certain that if you come and see for yourself, it will be the first of many visits. You may just find yourself raving about how ‘the jewel in the gulf’ is a stunning diamond, and not so much in the rough. New luxury walking holiday in Blue
G
reat Walks of Australia, the collective brand that markets Australia as a key guided walking destination, is proud to announce the addition of a new walk for NSW, the Blue Mountains Grand Traverse by Auswalk. This brings the number of walks in the program to 12, with 10 of those showcased in the new Signature Collection. Located in one of Australia’s many unique and spectacular walking destinations, this walk is the 2nd in the collection for NSW, having
recently adding the Seven Peaks Walk by Pinetrees on Lord Howe Island in April 2017. The Blue Mountains walk offers a fully supported opportunity to explore this important natural environment, only 90 minutes from Sydney, which features stunning cliffs, canyons rainforests and waterfalls. It is located in a UNESCO World Heritage listed area, as are the Great Walks products on Lord Howe and on Maria Island, Tasmania. “This walk is an exciting addition to the collective given its proximity to
Sydney, the important history of the area including walking tracks that are in some cases more than 100 years old, plus the demand we have from various international markets for a luxury guided walk in this area. It should be a popular addition,” said Gina Woodward, Executive Officer of the collection. The Blue Mountains Grand Traverse is a new 3 day/2 night walking experience including transport to and from Sydney. It’s a luxury version of Auswalk’s already popular Blue Mountains Traverse walking holiday. Walkers are ‘lodge

Walk days take in the Grand Canyon, Ruined Castle and Valley of the Waters, as well as famous viewpoints such as those of Govetts Leap, the Three Sisters, Wentworth and Katoomba Falls.
Auswalk owner, Brett Neagle, said “We’re extremely excited about this walk as it’s a natural evolution for Auswalk to work with Great Walks. We have been offering this walking holiday, and other superb walking itineraries across Australia for the past 20 years. Our expertise is now going to be shared across Great Walks of Australia and we look forward to welcoming guests on this personalised experience with our fully accredited expert guides.” www.auswalk.com.au

Queen Charlotte Sound
I happened on your lovely magazine (August issue) at the doctor’s this morning and was interested to read about Queen Charlotte Walk. We have a small bach in Aratawa Bay in Bay of Many Coves; the lower picture on p 24 (above), labelled Looking from Kenepuru Saddle into Endeavour Inlet is incorrect. It is looking into Aratawa Bay immediately below and out into Bay of Many Coves, with Queen Charlotte Sound and Arapawa Is in the background. It was named by Captain Cook with individual bays named after English poets so Aratawa Bay is also called Burns Bay. Neighbouring bays on the left include Chaucer and Milton Bays. Could I also give a warning to walkers who might stay in Picton motels the night before taking a launch to Ship’s Cove. The early start means you need to organise breakfast at an inconvenient hour for moteliers and I know of at least two lots of walkers who, last New Year, were unable to arrange an early breakfast. Do check this before you book. This is not a good look for Picton which needs to encourage travellers/ tourists who visit the magnificent Marlborough Sounds.
