The Waikato River Trails Trust received an Outdoor Access Champion Award last night. The award recognises the Trust’s achievements in enhancing public access and offering new opportunities for New Zealanders to experience our great outdoors. Walking Access Commission Chief Executive Board chair person John Forbes presented the award at a ceremony in Pūtāruru. The awards are an annual event organised by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission. Commission Chief Executive Ric Cullinane says they celebrate the people and community groups around the country who are developing trails and making it easier for people to experience the outdoors. The Trust was formed in 2006 to develop a network of trails along the Waikato, with the aim of bringing visitors to the beautiful South Waikato. Since then it has consistently supported regional development, the environment, the economy and the local river communities.

Auckland’s Quay Street

Cycleway Extension opened

The Quay Street Cycleway Extension is now open for people on bikes to ride safely into the city centre from east Auckland. The project extends the original two-way Quay Street Cycleway from Plumer Street, past Spark Arena, to near The Strand intersection. The 800m cycleway safely separates people on bikes from traffic and gives people walking and running their own dedicated space. AT’s Manager Walking, Cycling and Road Safety Kathryn King says the cycleway extension is an important addition to the city centre’s cycling infrastructure. “The Quay Street Cycleway is one of Auckland’s busiest. In 2017 we recorded 299,544 trips at our totem counter near the Ferry Building, and this year we are averaging 878 trips per day. “The cycleway extension will encourage even more people to ride bikes, and we look forward to seeing more people giving bike riding a go as the weather improves.” The project includes a floating bus stop with pedestrian crossings across the cycleway opposite Tapora Street, and landscaping and planting have been done by Ngāti Whātua Orākei. The project is part of the Urban Cycleways Programme, funded in partnership with NZTA.

More parks and open space for Aucklanders

A report presented to Auckland Council’s Environment and Community Committee last month outlined the $43.7 million council spent purchasing new parks and open space for Aucklanders in the previous financial year. The council spent $29.7 million on 13 new parks and open space areas totalling around 9.5 hectares. An additional $14 million was spent completing the purchase of sports fields at Hobsonville and a progress payment at Monte Cecilia Park. As well as purchasing new parkland, the council gained six new parks and open space areas at no capital cost to ratepayers. This includes a significant gift from Ngāti Manuhiri of 180 hectares of land at Te Arai South. Today the Environment and Community Committee agreed to formally recognise the bequest with a formal ceremony to acknowledge the exceptional gift made by Ngāti Manuhiri. Disposal of land The council also chose to dispose of a small number of non-service parks and open space areas. The chairperson of the Environment and Community Committee, Councillor Penny Hulse, stresses that the amount of open space that the council has disposed of is a tiny fraction compared to parks and open space land that has been acquired in the same time period. How will new open space be developed? It is the role of local boards to decide how local parks and open spaces will be developed. They also have responsibility for maintaining new local parks.

Pukeiti, Topare and Holland gardens win Qualmark Gold status

The iconic Taranaki heritage properties Pukeiti, Tūpare and Hollard Gardens have each been awarded rare Qualmark gold status as sustainable tourism operations. They are the only three Taranaki visitor attractions rated gold, which is awarded to recognise commitment to protecting the natural environment, enhancing connections with local communities, and delivering a quality, safe experience for all visitors. Each garden was independently evaluated by Qualmark. “A lot of hard work is behind this achievement,” says Greg Rine, Regional Gardens Manager for the Taranaki Regional Council, which owns and manages the gardens on behalf of the people of the region. Tackling the Awatere W alking tracks on private farmland have become a significant part of the rural recreation landscape and the Harvey’s three day Awatere Tussock Track up the Medway River in South Marlborough enables them to show how much they nourish Glen Orkney Station which they call home, and to share it with a sympathetic walking public. It’s a three day 27 kilometre walk rising from hill to high country, through pastures and nature covenants and staying out the back of the farm in a very comfortable cottage that would put most tramping huts to shame! There are various side trips and mountain climbing if you need even more excitement. It’s not aimed at the scroggin munchers, those intrepid trampers looking for twelve hours a day route march, but more for those folk the Americans delicately call “the snowbirds” or the “silverbacks” that is the more mature, often retired, audience! “We knew the visitors would be people with a bit more time who have generally tramped in their youth and who love getting out, having a burn out and then coming back and having a glass of wine, although we have had families here and they love it,” says Lynda. “Carting the packs for the walkers is a huge bonus as are the hot showers the fridge, and the comfortable bed. We don’t do any catering they bring all their own food, we just cart it. “We had done the Molesworth lunches for the Molesworth Tour Company for about six years. People loved the home made food, even the neatly stacked woodshed. Little things that we had taken for granted we could see this big urban rural divide and that a lot of people had no farm experiences,” says Lynda As well as putting a lot of thought into where the track should go, the Cregan Hut had to be created. Simon had always fancied a log cabin Right: Looking back over the high country landscape.

but he finished up with something a little more substantial, built very largely from timber milled on the property. The only drawback of the hut is that it is so comfortable it’s hard to get out of bed for the second day’s hike! “A lot of the walking tracks have different accommodation for each day but because the second day here is a loop day, walkers come back to the Cregan Hut,” says Lynda. The first day as walkers. we leave the homestead and wander out through tussock country on the eastern side of the property, slowly gaining altitude on the winding sheep tracks and then onto a farm road going over an 800 metre saddle and then along under the rugged Cregan Bluffs and onto the hut. The distinctive feature of the landscape is that it’s great open country for walking with the mountains in front and the more easy rolling country behind as you make the transition from hill to the high country. There are five fenced covenant reserves on the way. “There is a covenant only about a couple of kilometres out, we have planted some young totara and matai and right in the gully there is coprosma, five finger, manuka etc. We’ve planted a lot of cabbage trees, and there is matagouri and muhlenbeckia,’ says Simon In the afternoon the track changes to a south west direction underneath the Cregan Bluffs and there are other covenants which are quite different as you are getting out into the more shady high country. There are a lot of Spaniards out there, wineberry, putaputaweta, some remnant totara. So it is about nine kilometres all up and the hut is in a tussocky Above left: Cregar Hut. hollow. The second day is a two hour steep hike up the Twin Peaks and then through Billy Goat Saddle and a fair bit of scree dancing across the face of the mountains which has strategically placed guide ropes and it pays not to look down as it is a very long drop, as it were. It’s well signposted and ropes and a nibbie (mustering stick) help the passage across, and then down to the Top Hut for lunch, where the views are spectacular and then home to the Cregan Hut. The third day is the walk out through the centre of the property, one of the main attractions is the old musterer’s hut, known as the Back Hut with a small shearing shed above it. The hut would be a stark place to camp and it’s full of history, some of it posted on the walls. The track then goes through the biggest of the reserves with large old lancewood, broadleaf and manuka, then to the top of the hill and a gradual descent to the homestead. Perhaps the biggest benefit of the track is the intangible one, the chance for both the city folk and the farming family to appreciate each other’s viewpoints and to celebrate the uplifting landscapes which have drawn people here to this place. And to know that conservation and production farming can coexist rather well when both are respected. From: “Awatere. Portrait of a Marlborough Valley” Above right: An old hut. Walk at Lake Okataina to Koutu Pa Words by Tonia Perry Photos by Edwin Perry

K

outu Pa is on a small peninsula jutting out into Lake Okataina, near Rotorua and clearly visible from the lake edge. It was a blustery day when we drove out to Lake Okataina. The wind was whipping up the Lake and there were many white caps. However we donned coats on this cold windy day with the sun shining and set off on the walk to Koutu Pa. The track was through thick natural virgin bush and very beautiful. The Lake was visible at points along the way. It was quite cool walking as it was difficult for the sun to break through the thick canopy. Eventually after many stops to admire the native bush we made it to the perimeter of the Pa fence. This is a wire barricade erected to keep out animals. The wooden sign is easy to read but difficult to see in a photograph. We climbed over the style and started the walk to the top of the Pa. On the way up the hill there were various ancient Maori dugouts which made us think of the effort which must have

gone into making these holes in the side of the hill. Along with the many dugouts there were signs of Kumera pits. It was fascinating clambering to the top and exploring the site. The view of the Lake was amazing. We were pleased to keep to the leeward side out of the cold wind and this was very sheltered. After some time we felt we were trespassing and decided to leave. If only the ground could talk! We made the return trip through the bush to the car for a welcome lunch sitting in the sun and away from the wind. Lake Okataina is one of the most picturesque lakes in the Rotorua district. It has many arms and is a great shape and surrounded by native bush right down to the water’s edge. Above: right top White caps on Lake Okataina. Below left: The track to the pa wanders through bush. Below right: Two Maori dugouts from the past.

Mt Auckland Walk at Atuanui Scenic Reserve

ome of us may not know the existence of Mt Auckland, which is located in the outskirts of the super city Auckland, just about 70 km north (Rodney District); connected by good highways. The location is beautified by Kaipara Harbour, surrounding typical New Zealand farmlands, paddocks, and native forest patches, here and there just along Kaipara Coastal Highway. The peak (305m), including the surrounding reserved area is covered by well preserved dense, mixed vegetation of native bush. Historically, the area surrounding

the summit has been looked after since more than 100 years under native bush conservation. The area is called Atuanui Scenic Reserve. After the handover of the area by Department of Conservation (DOC) to the local iwi group, Ngati Whatua O Kaipara, and members of local Puhatahi Marae, now, it is looked after by a Trust with members comprising, local iwi, ecologists and environment specialists and representative from Auckland City Council. Â It is made sure by the local community including Glorit community that the regenerating kanuka and manuka dominated bush is allowed to cover

below the reserve. I had watched the mountain, while passing through Kaipara Coastal Highway (KCHW) many times in last 20 years. I recently checked the access road to the reserve for the purpose to visit. Â Thanks to my son, Sudeep, who offered to drive me there, and walk along with me on one of the weekends, we made it on Sundayi in March. We checked the weather, that was partly sunny for the day, and also route. We allowed the built-in GPS of the car to help us drive through. It took us through the northern NMW 1, and to Dairy Flat, to KCHW, very close to Glorit. We had a little difficulty locating the entrance because of the signboard posted on the side of KCHW was tad small. Once the entrance was found, we went in through a big metal gate for about 75 m to small car park, but enough for about six cars on gravelled ground. There was a toilet nearby, tbut unfortunately it did not have toilet paper or hand wash. There were two cars at the time. Anyway, we followed what looked Above left: The route map and track information posted at the car park. Above right; Metrosideros booming with a bee visiting for honey.

we reached the gate of Atuanui Scenic Reserve. This was protected by another stile, and there was disinfection arrangement against “Kauri Dieback”. After this gate the forest was quite dense with mixed trees and shrubs including nikau, silver fern, puriri, taraire, flax, and cabbage trees. At one point we saw dwarf rata bush with a beautiful flower. The camera also caught the bee visiting the flower.

like an old track covered by grass. We crossed a little gully to go to other side and the track continued up-hill on extensive paddock. The paddock was dominantly ryegrass, occasionally paspalum, and a few broad leaf dandelions occurring here and there. On the lower side, a lot of flowering pampas could be seen. Luxuriant growth of grass made it a bit strenuous to walk uphill. After a few minutes the track also disappeared, and we just followed the direction and orange painted pole mark, that were few and far between. Whenever, we looked behind, the view of distant blue water, beyond the farmlands was beautiful. Then we crossed the high tension transmission line and continued the walk uphill. After about 20 minutes we reached where new plantation was obvious, and looking back the Tasman Sea could be seen.. After crossing a stile on a fence, and walking for 10 minutes through regenerating manuka and kanuka plantation,

We continued our walk, mostly going up and up through undulating hill tops. The track was fairly well established and well directed by orange triangular plastic arrows nailed on the side of tree trunks. The description of the reserve indicated the hunting is allowed to the permit holders only. While we were walking we heard, what seemed like gun

fire at that time from below. We could not check what it was. At one point I saw one species of orchid, that was quite common in many trees (taraire), and I would have liked to identify it, but it was not flowering at this time. Some areas were moist but we had no difficulty walking. After about 25 minutes of walk uphill from the gate, we reached the summit. It was narrow, just enough space for angular cone (trig) and view-tower. All the hard work to reach there was paid off by the stunning panoramic view of surrounding area, especially that of Kaipara Harbour on north, and Hoteo River estuary on west side. On the south side the extensive farmland with houses was seen. It has been reported that on a sunny; clear day, one can see Whangarei as well. The vegetation surrounding this peak was very mixed. I saw New Zealand honeysuckle (rewarewa), cabbage, nikau, grisilina and even one species of hebe, and flax. After enjoying the beautiful surrounding and some stunning views, and, of course, taking photos to record our visit, we rested for five minutes and drank water. We then descended along the same route. Alternatively, there was another route, that was a bit longer (more than 11 km), but we did not plan that one for the day. It was evident that the pests are closely monitored with traps. Enjoying the view and fantastic terrain while descending, it took us about

45 minutes to reach the car park. The distance recorded is 3.5 km each way, to and from the peak. Official timing recommended is about 3.5 hours. There is a seasonal restriction of walking through this track from 1 August to 30 September because the “KCHW access to the forest edge” is closed due to lambing season. We met an adult with two children of four and seven years coming down while we were going up, that meant it is accessible for children under 10 years as well. Good shoes, comfortable seasonal wear, and water bottle are essential. A couple of samies as refreshment will be helpful while resting at the top. It was a memorable experience to add yet another milestone of New Zealand walk. We enjoyed it very much. We came back through Wellsford to Auckland. Thanks to the trust for managing Atuanui Reserve for our pleasure; an avid walker will always appreciate it. That is what makes New Zealand, New Zealand.

Track closures in Kaipātiki reserves area

uckland Council and Kaipātiki Local Board started in September to close a number of vulnerable tracks and some reserves in the Kaipātiki area, to protect against further spread of kauri dieback disease. These closures come after the confirmation last month of the disease on trees in Kauri Park and Muriel Fisher Reserve, Birkenhead. Since then, Auckland Council has carried out a risk assessment in the area and has determined that several tracks should be closed. Auckland Council Biosecurity Manager Phil Brown says that with the disease now present in the area, other nearby kauri are at risk. “Our objective across the region is to protect significant stands of kauri that do not have the disease, of which there are many in the Kaipātiki area,” he says. “After the disease was discovered, we had to think strategically about our next steps to contain it within the area. We have listened to the strong concerns from Kaipātiki Local Board and community and made the decision to temporarily close tracks as a preventive measure. Closures in place for three to six months “At this stage the closures will be in place for three to six months, while tracks are assessed and prioritised for upgrade works or re-routing. We’ll then aim to get upgraded tracks re-opened as soon as possible.

Kaipātiki Local Board Chair John Gillon says the board is delighted to see the council implement these closures after pushing hard for them over the past months. “Kaipātiki Local Board has worked alongside the community to see these proactive measures put in place for the protection of our precious kauri,” he says. “We requested that council staff work with Pest Free Kaipātiki and other local groups to determine what tracks be closed, to ensure community involvement and expertise on this crucial issue. “We are aware of the inconvenience these closures will have on recreational activities but ask locals and the public to please respect these closures and take alternative routes or explore the wide range of non-kauri parks we are lucky enough to have in our area.” North Shore Ward Councillor Richard Hills says the support of the Kaipātiki community is crucial to the effectiveness of the closures. “As a community, we are passionate about protecting our local environment. I have confidence that we will unite to make this a success. “We heard loud and clear during the 10-year budget consultation that residents wanted action. I am glad we were able to create the budgets to do this crucial work. “While it is never ideal to have tracks closed, this inconvenience will have enormous benefits in ensuring these significant kauri will be around to enjoy for many years to come.” Always clean your footwear and equipment before entering kauri areas and after leaving and use any footwear cleaning stations you encounter on you visit. Please always stick to designated open tracks.

Te Araroa Trail

By Bob Hodgson

Track walk where James Burtton

spent a solitary life in a whare

L

ast month twenty-two intrepid trampers faced the undaunting we a t h e r a n d terrain to challenge the southern half of the Burtton’s Track, a track ending 7 km up in the Tararuas from Shannon in the Horowhenua area. We welcomed our newcomer, Katrina. It was a cool winter’s morning when we set off from the Mangahao carpark, and after a few minutes we were on track which was also part of the Te Araroa Trail. The track led us through parts lined

with toetoe and then into great bush country consisting of tall ferns and some rimu trees with some covered in epiphytes thriving in the environment. The occasional tomtit was also seen, no doubt keeping the beetles and insects under control. Fortunately, it was only about fifteen minutes into the walk that we enjoyed our first stream crossing, the first of around twenty, on our way to Burtton’s whare, a site where James Burtton shared his solitary life with the surrounding mature forest until 1941when he suffered serious injuries (which eventually proved fatal) from a collapsing bridge. That area was approximately 8km into the tramp and was an ideal turning point and lunch venue. The weather throughout the tramp was generally very good for winter, and there were only brief occasions when

there was some light rain. There was one downpour of hail for two or three minutes just as we stopped for lunch. It came, it passed, and lunch was enjoyed. The undulating track was a tad overgrown in places and followed closely to the Tokomaru River where there were some beautiful views of the river, the occasional small waterfall and surrounding bush high on the sides of the river valley. The there and back tramp seemed to be enjoyed by all, and thanks to the Met Office for providing the weather. Besides being in the bush amongst native vegetation, with views of the river, it was

a tramp of many streams (34 crossings). In fact, my boots were the cleanest they had ever been at the end of a tramp. All were back on time at 2.45pm, and we enjoyed refreshments at the local cafĂŠ in Shannon. The three UHF radios worked well. Most tramps go up then down: This was an exception.

an ideal snack spot, nestling down in the dry feathery grass, leaning against the warm rock and enjoying the view. Bliss. But... the deep green bush eventually beckoned. Back over the stile and over another one on the right. This led us downhill on a marked track. (Orange triangles not to be confused with ribboned trap line markers). Here the benefit of consistent trapping was obvious. Mature heavy bush of totara, rimu, puriri and lush dense groves of the most beautiful palm of all, the nikau. Their profusion teamed with ponga, juvenile lancewood, flowering kiekie at trackside all fresh with recent rain but now in dappled sun was

ndaunted by the weather forecast and encouraged with the prospect of being in mature bush, we drove north of Auckland to the tiny historic settlement of Puhoi. Then 9km inland along Ahuroa Road some of which is unsealed. Puhoi was settled in 1863 by optimistic Bohemians (now Czech Republic). They were taken from Auckland by sailing cutter to the mouth of the Puhoi River. Winter was upon them and Puhoi Valley was a harsh environment for Captain Krippner and his countrymen. Had it not been for the local Maori many more would have perished. Today it is a destination in itself with a museum, an historic church, an interesting old pub, river kayaking and of course the ubiquitous cafes nearby. Our destination was Dunn’s Bush which is part of the Te Araroa Trail. Arthur and Val Dunn were local farmers dedicated to improving the land and making their bush predator free. They placed a QE|| covenant on the bush and developed the track continuing an intensive trapping programme. Sadly Arthur died suddenly while out checking his possum traps 10 years ago aged 69. Access is down Tolhopf Road through a small rural subdivision to a sealed parking area. The start of the track is signposted through a gate with the obligatory boot cleaning station. From here it borders the fence line eventually emerging by a stile with pastureland beyond. At this elevation views of the valley below are wide and scenic with Remiger Road zigzagging through the entire length. Such a small part of Rodney but such a vast area of uninhabited land. Long may it remain so! Ahead is a large rounded outcrop of rock semi concealed by scrubby vegetation, known as the Sugar Loaf. On a sunny day such as ours it was

would ever know we had been there? Only us! The 5km track finishes at a small parking area on Ahuroa Road by a large Dunns Bush sign. Note: This walk can be done in reverse, starting from here but it is recommended to only park in Tolhopf Road. This necessitates a lengthy but not unpleasant gravel walk along Ahuroa Road either at the beginning or end of My Favourite Walk. Thank you Arthur Dunn.

IS IT YOUR DREAM TO WALK AN OVERSEAS MARATHON OR HALF MARATHON? a delight. The weighty widow makers above cast bulky shadows in the lofty branches of their hosts. With Auckland’s winter weather being what it is, there was plenty of slippery mud and the steep descent was negotiated with care. Who needs a calamitous incident in such conditions? At the bottom, bush gave way to open grassland with the track going above a stream over a narrow plank bridge. Hand on to the rail, no mishaps. Then it was up the other side, again mud, again luxurious bush, again joy at experiencing it. No Kauri dieback here it seems. Fingers crossed. fter months of rain and snow, Victoria’s waterfalls will flow plentiful as rivers swell under the spring sun. Here are a list of some of the best places to pack up, picnic, hike and laze away the days, courtesy of Parks Victoria.

Melbourne

Dights Falls – Yarra Bend Park is a tranquil, dog friendly escape from the city less than 5kms from Melbourne. The waterfall is an artificial weir built on a natural rock bar across the Yarra. The weir was built in the 1840s to provide water to the ‘Ceres’ flour mill, one of the first in Victoria. The falls were later to become known as Dights Falls after Above: A viewing platform in the Erskine Falls. Below: McKenzie Falls in the Grampians National Park.

Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges

Olinda Falls is a small picnic area with a short walking trail to the falls, about an hour’s drive from Melbourne. While dogs and swimming are not allowed, it is possible to sit in the water at the lower falls.  There is a picnic table close to the carpark and a unisex accessible toilet. The area is serviced by public transport. Keppel Falls Walk located in the Marysville Bushland Reserve is 108 kilometres from Melbourne and serviced by public transport. The cascading tiered Keppel Falls are particularly impressive in spring, following snow melt and rain. Sherbrooke Falls, tracks leading from Sherbrooke and O’Donohue Picnic

Trentham Falls, in the Coliban River Scenic Reserve is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. There is no access to the top or base of the falls due to unstable cliffs but visitors can best enjoy the waterfall from the viewing platforms. The reserve protects one of the best remnants of vegetation in the area, visitors can find stands of large manna gum, stringy bark, messmate, narrowleaved peppermint as well as seasonal wildflowers. Sailors Falls in Hepburn Regional Park can be viewed from the picnic area located near the road. The steps to the waterfall have been upgraded with a non-slip walking strip which provides easy entry to the base of the waterfall and allows wheelchair access to the first viewing platform.

Mornington Peninsula

Kings Waterfall in Arthurs Seat State Park, it’s a short walk from the carpark on Waterfall Gully Road to Kings Falls and past She-Oaks, Grasstrees, a boardwalk through lovely fern gully, native Wild Cherry, scented Paperbarks and other interesting plants and creatures. The walk has a series of interpretive signs.

Great Ocean Road

Erskine Falls are at the end of Erskine Falls Road 10km north west of Lorne. There is a viewing point above the falls and a walking track, steep in places, leads to the base of the falls. The falls cascade over one of the highest drops in the Otways. Triplet Falls is one of the iconic visitor sites in the Great Otway National Park. Nestled amongst the ancient forests of mountain ash and myrtle beech, visitors will discover three distinct and impressive cascades flowing through shady rainforests and glades of mossy tree ferns. forest and provides views into the lower cascades and the majestic main falls. A small picnic area is also available for visitors to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounds. Beauchamp Falls is particularly memorable after heavy rain, displaying a white rectangular cascade of water gushing down to a pretty pool. The outlook at the falls, with splendid ferns, blackwood trees and beeches all around, is picture perfect. Hopetoun Falls in the Great Otway National Park is beautiful at most times of year. There’s a nice view of the falls from the upper platform near the carpark. But for the more adventurous descend the 200 steps through a glade of ferns for a closer look. Water plummets 30 metres into the Aire River.

Goldfields (Bendigo, Ballarat, Castlemaine, Kyneton)

Ferntree Waterfall in the Buangor State Park is best after rain, a scenic short walk suitable for most people, it begins from Ferntree camping area and leads to the Ferntree Waterfalls and the upper sections of Middle Creek Turpin Falls Scenic Reserve is situated 12.6 kilometres from Kyneton and is one of several waterfalls and associated deep pools located along the Campaspe River. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the falls from a lookout located a short walk from the carpark. There are no amenities or general facilities, such as toilets or picnic tables. Pedestrian access to the waterhole is subject to seasonal track closures.

Grampians National Park

MacKenzie Falls is a spectacular waterfall regarded as one of the largest and most popular waterfalls in the Grampians National Park. The Bluff Lookout provides sweeping views of MacKenzie Falls and the MacKenzie River from high above the gorge. The lookout provides the only opportunity to capture the multiple cascades of the MacKenzie River as it flows through the gorge, including a wonderful view of MacKenzie Falls. Broken Falls, just upstream from MacKenzie Falls, in the Grampians National Park. The cantilevered lookout on the edge of the gorge offers sweeping views of the river tumbling over the wide, dissipated waterfalls. Broken Falls lookout is a pram friendly walk. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Silverband Falls is a short 40-minute walk from the Silverband car park. Stroll 700m through shady, ferny forest. Cross a rock crossing to arrive at the base of Silverband Falls. Visit in spring to see abundant wildflowers, birds, frogs and kangaroos. Not suitable for prams and wheel chairs.

High Country

Woolshed Falls, located in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park provides the opportunity for a family picnic or to view the falls that can be spectacular after heavy rain. A six-kilometre walking track links Woolshed Falls to Beechworth via the Cascades and the Gorge Scenic Drive Raymond Creek Falls in the Snowy River National Park can be reached all year round from Orbost along Moorsford Road. A short 30-minute walking track leads to a view of Raymond Creek Falls plunging metres into a deep, clear pool. Paradise Falls, near Whitfield in the Alpine National Park, cascade an uninterrupted 31 metres and are most spectacular in spring, early summer or after rain. The walk to the viewing platform is a well‐made stepped track perfect for all fitness levels. The falls can be accessed from Cheshunt. With picnic facilities at the car park, visitors can pack a lunch or grab

some fare from nearby Whitfield and enjoy the peaceful park. Dandongadale Falls – dramatic glimpses of Victoria’s longest falls (a 255m drop tumbling off the Cobbler Plateau), are possible on the Lake Cobbler scenic drive. Visitors will pass through the picturesque farming valley of the Rose River, riverine forest and foothill bushland before ascending to the subalpine woodlands of Lake Cobbler. Little River Waterfalls situated almost 4-kilometres from Victoria’s deepest gorge, is to the west of McKillop Bridge and downstream from the junction of the Little River and Snowy River. After a well-signed 800-metre drive off the Bonang-Gelantip Road, a 400-metre walking track leads to a cliff-top Parks Victoria also advises that while natural pools and waterfalls may look like inviting places to cool off but swimming at these spots can be dangerous and may have strong currents, debris and other hazards. New Zealand Walks

Three waterfall walks in Bay of Plenty It was early August and a beautiful day for a walk, so we headed off to visit three local attractions in the Bay of Plenty Driving to Te Puke, we turned into No 4 Road, where Raparapahoe Falls are signposted on the left at a small carpark. The walk down through native bush, is reasonably steep with lots of steps and tree roots, but is very pretty. You can hear the falls almost all the way. We reached Raparapahoe Stream in 20 minutes, and turning left, walked beside the stream for 10 minutes to the falls. Although not very high they plunge into a beautiful big swimming hole, where locals have tied a rope swing. It took 35 minutes to return to the car, and we drove 10 minutes to Poplar Lane and Papamoa Hills Scenic Reserve. Right: Going up Papamoa Hills. Below: Coming back up the steps.

Three waterfall walks in Bay of Plenty There is a large carpark here with display boards giving infomation on the various walking tracks and points of interest that can be found in this area. There are seven Pa sites within the reserve where terracing can be seen. Huge pine trees have recently been cut, taking away some shelter, but it is even nicer to walk the new track, because there are coastal views all the way up to the trig at 224 meters. Over 50,000 native plants have been planted here in recent years adding to Above left: The top falls at Kaiate. Above right: Admiring the Kaiate Falls. Middle left: The bridge below the falls. the attraction. After sitting enjoying the view we returned on a loop track over farmland, giving awesome views over Papamoa and Mt Maun ganui. Back at the carpark at 1.00pm we drove another 15 minutes, up Welcome Bay Road, to Waitao Road, where clear signs show the way to Kaiate Falls. These are some of the prettiest falls you will ever find. The trail starts beside the top of the falls, and leads down a series of steps –quite steep in parts – to the base of the third drop. These three falls, cascading down a narrow canyon, are just stunning, and a perfect photo spot. The trail then continues over a little bridge and down more steps to a lower fall plunging into a round bowl. It’s often quite chilly down here, but local kids still leap off the cliff face to the plunge pool below. The return walk is a loop, continuing down beside the stream, then over another bridge, before tackling lots of steps back up to the carpark. It’s an incredibly beautiful walk – about an hour return. So – an awesome day. three walks, all different, all very pretty and all in our own backyard. I would highly recommend it if you’re in the Bay.

My Favourite Walk

Hike in Swiss Alps brings back childhood memories One of my favourite books to read as a child was Heidi. The story of the little girl from Switzerland who went to live with her Grandfather up in the mountains. It all sounded so delightful; her bed of hay in the loft of the chalet, the sweet little goats with bells around their necks, carpets of flowers in the meadows, the delicious goat’s cheese and milk and of course the mighty alps themselves. My recent experience of Switzerland wasn’t far off what I just described. I spent one blissful afternoon walking up in the stunning Swiss Alps which were covered with beautiful wildflowers. I even managed to bump into a herd of “Heidi’s” goats complete with little Swiss bells hanging around their necks! It was the end of July and my sister Hannah and I were in Switzerland for a few days holiday. Somehow we had hit the weather jackpot. The “not a cloud in the sky”, “perfect temperature” kind of jackpot. Exactly what is needed for a holiday spent in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains! A few years earlier, my brother David and I had visited the Lautabruan Valley in Switzerland and I was more

than happy to come back with Hannah because I consider it to be one of the most beautiful places on earth! (If you ever travel to Switzerland, it is a must visit.) Inside the valley there is a lovely little village made up of wooden swiss chalets with brightly painted window shutters and window boxes filled with colourful summer flowers. There is also a train station and two cable cars at either end of the valley. Dotted through the surrounding mountains were roaring waterfalls.

www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

The second afternoon we were there, we took the cable car up the mountain. The plan was to walk along the Mountain View Trail and then get the cable car back down to the valley at the other end. We both miss hiking in New Zealand, so we were excited to be out in the fresh air with a backpack on our backs. The track started with a yellow signpost pointing us in the direction that we wanted to go. It led uphill into a forest. The green ferns growing along the track made us imagine that we had been transported back to a hike in New Zealand. Soon the trail led out of the woods and onto the green hillside. This is where we got our first breathtaking view of the snow capped mountains. The combination of the blue sky, white mountains, green hillside and purple flowers that covered it - well I don’t think I need to convince you that it was simply one of the most stunning views I had ever seen! The rest of the afternoon was spent blissfully traipsing along the trail, stopping regularly to take photos and also for our lunch of Swiss bread, cheese and salami. At one point I heard the tinkling of bells and spotted a herd of goats down the hillside. Just in case I wasn’t feeling

like I was in the story of Heidi enough! Of course I had to clamber down for a photo. New Zealand is known for its great hikes and beautiful scenery but I think I can safely say that on this particular day, Switzerland was winning. My Favourite Walk

We walked along the absolutely clear river and at one stage looked over a bridge and could hear the water deep underneath the rocks but could not see the water at all, it was incredible and then we continued climbing. The rolling hills were magnificent. It seemed that we were right in the back blocks of the Nelson area with no one at all around. It was so amazing at how far we could go. We stopped for lunch but before we sat down we checked the next corner in case we would miss out on something. When you go tramping there is always another hill or another corner. After lunch we decided to head back. It was such a nice area and we had already talked about doing another days tramping in the area the next day.

.

lunch time and then head back as the gate would be closed at 5 p.m. It was a beautiful day, still a little cool but no wind. We had just started on the track and we had spectacular views of the dam with a mirror image of all the hills beyond. It was all new to us. Most of the time we were in full bush with plenty of ups and downs and of course mostly up.

tage one of a major cycle route that will eventually connect Halswell and the central city was opened last month. Construction started on the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway(external link) last October and the first 4.6 km section of the route, from Moorhouse Ave to Victors Road is now complete. The route features several new sets of traffic lights and pedestrian and cyclist crossings at key intersections. Christchurch City Councillor Pauline Cotter, Chair of the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee, NZ Transport Agency Regional Director Jim Harland and Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board Chair Karolin Potter formally opened the cycleway. They were welcomed by students from Te Whānau Tahi School. After the speeches the children jumped on their bikes to try out the new cycle path. Cr Cotter says cycleways are a proven way to improve the health of a city, reduce congestion and lower the cost of infrastructure. The Quarryman’s Trail

cycleway is already being well used with 5900 cyclists on Antigua Street last week and 1100 on Sparks Road. “This is just another piece of the cycleway network that’s gradually slotting together and will make Christchurch New Zealand’s leading bike-friendly city. ” Construction of the final stage of the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway, from Victors Rd to Te Hāpua in Halswell, will start in November. Lynette Ellis, the Council’s Planning and Delivery Transport Manager, says the route will benefit motorists as well as improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists with the new intersections helping to ease congestion at peak times. The Quarryman’s Trail is part of a network of Major Cycle Routes(external link) being built across the city by the Council to link shopping centres, businesses, schools, parks and popular recreation destinations.
