New regional park for Havelock North

Hawkes Bay is to have a new regional park in Havelock North. The eastern side of Te Mata Peak where the controversial Craggy Range was constructed by Craggy Range Winery several years ago will be turned into a 50ha size park. The Hawkes Bay Regional Council said the new park will be called Te Rongo Regional Park and this area has the potential for a new walking track to be constructed in the future. The new park will be about 50ha in size and is located opposite Craggy Range Winery and adjoining the existing Te Mata Park.

A new apartment block for the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust is a step closer to reality, with a vital funding boost of $120,000 thanks to a keen group of hikers tramping the Milford Track. Queenstown-based guiding company Ultimate Hikes last month handed over a cheque for $120,000 to the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, raised from a dedicated charity walk in April this year. The five-day, 54km-long hike saw 48 walkers taking to the trail to support the Trust, raising funds to build a new accommodation facility located five minutes’ walk from Christchurch Hospital. Ultimate Hikes – the only company in New Zealand to offer guided hiking and private lodging along the Milford and Routeburn tracks – donated all proceeds of the all-inclusive guided walk to the cause. Bone Marrow Cancer Trust CEO Allison Nichol is thrilled with the outcome of the inaugural event, and says the fundraising was made possible thanks to the generosity of Ultimate Hikes and company owner Sir John Davies. “We are blown away by the amount of money raised from this event and can’t thank Sir John Davies and Ultimate Hikes enough. Every cent raised will go towards helping those who require a home away from home when they need it most, while receiving medical treatment in Christchurch,” she says. Ranui House, which means ‘big warm place’ in Māori, comprises 26 apartments next to Christchurch Hospital and accommodated more than 1400 patients and extended families in 2018. “We were delighted to be able to help the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust edge towards its funding goal,” says Ultimate Hikes owner Sir John Davies. “The Milford Track is one of the most beautiful walks in the world, hiking through the heart of Fiordland National Park to Milford Sound.”

Newest Great Walk to open this year New Zealand’s newest Great Walk, the Paparoa Track, opens on 1 December. It leads hikers and mountain bikers through a stunning landscape of panoramic views, limestone formations and thriving rainforest.

Walk for Wag helps teams visit elderly

Walk for Wag takes place at Landal Kielder Waterside for the fourth time this September! Have a fun day out with spectacular scenery while at the same time, raising money to enable more and more Visiting Wag Teams to visit the elderly across the North East of England. Walk for Wag was founded by local business people and is supported by some key businesses in the North East. “Having visited the elderly with dogs in nursing homes as part of corporate volunteering programmes, we have seen first-hand the positive benefits of new friends and the special bond between dogs and people”. Indisputably one of the most beautiful walks in the UK, the Kielder Dog Walk is a 10 kilometre sponsored walk (6.2 miles) starting here at Landal Kielder Waterside along the Lakeside Way. There is also a 3 kilometre (1.86 miles) walk where a shorter distance would be more appropriate for you and your children or your dogs. The 10 km walk takes just about 2 hours at a moderate pace and the 3 km about half an hour. Both walks are on generally good terrain although it can be uneven in parts. The 3km walk is wheelchair accessible with support. For more information on the charity or event, visit www. wagandcompany.co.uk

he Mighty Mounga, the majestic andesitic volcano Mt Taranaki (2518m) is the central point of the 34,170ha Egmont National Park. Approximately 125,000 years old it is the parks most recent volcanic peak, last erupting around 1755 AD. The mountain is now considered dormant. (hopefully). Egmont National Park became New Zealand’s second national park after Tongariro in 1900. Named Egmont by Captain Cook the traditional Maori name of Mt Taranaki is now more widely used. New Zealand’s oldest building within a national park is found at North Egmont. The historic camp house was originally used as military barracks in Left: Mt Taranaki from upper carpark.

New Plymouth during the Taranaki Wars of the 1860’s. The building was sledged to North Egmont in 1891 for use as accommodation. The camp house has now been restored and upgraded for backpacker accommodation, but many of its unique historic features such as hand wrought corrugated iron with rifle firing slit (loopholes) and tongue and groove timber panelling are still visible. These days the volcanic peak offers more than 200km of walking tracks for outdoor adventures through untouched bush, clear streams, mystical forests and breath-taking views. Lush native forest, stunning views and a variety of walking opportunities are available at North Egmont roadend, just a 30 minute drive from New Plymouth. There are different types of tracks to suit all skills and abilities. I chose three different ones, one of which was a two hour trek. All three were on the lower slopes starting off at the visitor centre, where the lush rainforest is evidence of the park’s high rainfall. Dripping with moss and lichens this totara and kamahi forest is sometimes referred to as ‘goblin forest’. On the higher slopes the forest gives

way to dense subalpine shrubs and alpine herb fields. Common forest birds include tomtits, miromiro, tui, bellbirds, korimako, kereru. Other birds present but less likely to be seen are north island brown kiwi, fern bird, kotata and the blue duck. An epidemic giant land snail and many species of native fish are all in the park. The North Egmont National Park is managed by the Department of Conservation. CONNETT LOOP TRACK The start of the Connett Loop Track is at the bottom of the visitor centre car park, over a short boardwalk and is well signposted as you enter into the forest. It is a pretty walk and in the area of the goblin forest. Like most walks on this mountain they can be challenging with narrow sometimes deep tracks exposed tree roots and very uneven ground. This walk took me 40 minutes and has a lookout, but wasn’t very wonderful as the day was overcast and not much view of the surrounding country side. are many green mossy boulders all sizes left over from the last eruption Some you need to clamber over and some wet areas where there are small streams but worth doing, but it is challenging. NGATORO LOOP TRACK The access to Ngatoro Loop Track walk is the same as the Connet Loop Walk, as both starting points are next to each other and well signposted. This walk is the prettiest of the three I did, and it is mostly goblin forest and very beautiful. It is downhill into a rocky pretty dell from where it starts to climb up again. There were some small streams to cross but I was able to hop across as they were only shallow. This track is extremely rocky, uneven, narrow and again exposed tree roots and as you start the uphill climb there are larger boulders you have to clamber up over or work your way around. It is extremely hard going and not for the faint hearted. The beauty is something to behold. If you wish to continue further you can take the Ngatoro Track signposted, down to a picnic area and return the way you came. You can add perhaps another two hours onto the walk to venture down to the picnic area. As I only did the loop it was an hour. This way it exits onto a gravel road where by turning right you end up back at the visitor centre. Above right: Backpackers Camphouse North Egmont National Park. Below right: Ambury Monument. VERONICA LOOP TRACK Follow the boardwalk to the right of the visitor centre from the car park to the start of the Veronica Loop Track or if coming out of the visitor centre turn left. At the end of the boardwalk (where I lost my way due to lack of signposting) you need to walk up to the backpackers camp house walk in front of it to the other side, where you will see the signpost to Veronica Walk around the corner on the right. There is a multitude of steps to climb and on the way up do stop and call in at the Ambury Monument signposted on the right and learn the history as to why it is so significant. A tragedy in 1918 that rocked the township of New Plymouth Continue the climb up the stairs (phew, I had to keep stopping to have breather) until you eventually reach the sign to Veronica Walk arrowed right. If you are feeling fit you can continue further up the stairs to the trig station for wonderful views on a fine day. Veronica is also a beautiful walk starting off in alpine surroundings where it then descends into the kamahi, totara forest, and eventually the spooky goblin forest on the lower slope. It is strictly a downhill climb, again not for the faint hearted. It is very challenging and I could not do it again. When you reach the bottom you have a steep uphill climb. It is signposted where you need to exit back to the visitor centre. Take plenty of water with you and maybe a snack. This walk took two hours. For all walks on this mountain you need: sturdy footwear, rainwear, plan your trip, tell someone where you are going, be aware of weather changes, (it can be sudden) and know your limits. Check with the visitor centre for up to Above left: The beautiful walk through the Goblin Forest. Middle left: Exit from Ngatoro Walk back to the Visitor Centre.

date track information. To access the northern side of Mt Taranaki take the turn off at Junction Road, Egmont Village on SH 3 between Inglewood and New Plymouth. It is well signposted and is 16kms to the visitor and information centre. There is a gift shop and cafÊ where brochures and maps are available. The maps are marked with which are walking tracks and those that are tramping tracks. For both sides of the mountain my walks were done in the autumn. In the winter the snow reaches the lower levels and can be bitterly cold but beautiful. For those of you just doing the walking tracks maybe the warmer and more settled weather maybe best. All walks are well signposted. Dogs are forbidden even if they are left in your vehicle. There is a hefty fine. North Egmont National Park has many pretty walks and tramps but the eastern side, Stratford with its Dawson Falls is the most scenic, beautiful and more popular. For walking or tramping on any of the tracks on either side of the mountain due to the uneven and rocky terrain, a walking pole or stick is recommended. This beautiful mountain like all others can be deadly in extreme weather. Above top: Rough terrain most of the way. Below left: Connett Walk in Goblin Forest. Below right: Ngatoro walk Goblin Forest

I

t is always good to do some short walks as well as a day’s tramping when you visit a new area. That is what members of Christchurch’s Tower Trampers planned recently. A friend suggested Tunnel Beach was a must in Dunedin. It was a one hour walk (return) but the views would be spectacular. This seemed to be a great track that went to nowhere. We met a few people who were returning to the carpark and we carried on and to our amazement all of a sudden a rabbit was in full flight outstretched in mid air crossing the path, being chased by a stoat or a weasel in full flight and mid air as well (they were both outstretched going as fast as they both could actually they were flying through the air). The stoat or weasel was about one meter behind the rabbit and he meant business. They were both unaware of us! This was something we have never seen, it was so unique and we will probably never see something like that again. There was no possibility of a photo that is for sure. Mt Favourite Walk

We were of course going “wow look at that” and the other people turned around but they were too late to see what we saw. We continued to look at the view and were certainly mesmerized by the sea and the land. It was so beautiful. We did not cross the fence line as it was slippery and you need to be aware of the cliffs around you. There was a small tunnel entrance you could go down through the ground to get to the beach or lookout (this was a boulder beach). You could only go as far as the lookout through the tunnel if the tide was high. This was just so incredible to see and quite exciting with the waves hitting against the cliffs further beyond where we were. We spent a lot of time just looking around at the views. It was spectacular to see and so close to Dunedin. After many photos and lots of chatting about the scenery we headed back up the hill. This was such a great walk for everyone to see the cliffs and the tunnel under the land. A really special place to visit.

For centuries the Southern Ocean and its salt-laden wind have sculpted the sandstone coastline south of Dunedin. The outcome is a line of magnificent high cliffs, arches and headlands that provide endless vantage points for breathtaking views. Tunnel Beach is one of them. Follow the fenced track downhill to the spectacular, rocky coastline. At the end of the track you will find the handcarved rock tunnel that gives Tunnel Beach it’s name. Built in the 1870s, the passage allows access to a secluded and sheltered beach at the base of the cliffs. Be sure to examine the rock along the way, where you may discover shell fragments and possibly a fossil, such as a brachiopod shell or echinoderm (sea urchin), or even bones of an extinct whale. Above, tenacious plant species, such as spleenwort, happily exist in the absence of soil. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Te Araroa Trail

Numbers walking on trail increasing By Mark Weatherall

I

Chief Executive Te Araroa Trust

t’s an exciting time for the Te Araroa Trust as we release our new strategic plan for the Te Araroa Trail. The Te Araroa Trust is responsible for the 3,000 km national trail, which stretches from Cape Reinga in the far north to Bluff at the bottom of the South Island. More than 1,100 people walked the full length of the trail during the 2018/2019 walking season and tens of thousands more completed individual sections throughout the year. The popularity of the trail and the need to manage it in a sustainable way were major drivers for the newly released strategy. We have identified the need to reduce road-walking and delivering a highquality experience for people walking New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail as our top priorities for the next three years. The new plan identifies five focus areas for the Trust through to 2022. In addition to facilitating a high-quality experience for walkers and improving trail infrastructure, the Trust will focus on strengthening relationships with

www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

stakeholders, clearly communicating trail information to walkers and securing the sustainability of the trail and Trust through partnerships and new funding streams. Geoff and Miriam Chapple along with the many volunteers and supporters have done an outstanding job developing Te Araroa trail through its formative years and our new strategy aims to build on all their hard work Since starting the Chief Executive role just over 12 months ago I have taken on board the various feedback and this has helped inform the new plan. It is very much about plotting a course for the future and making certain that all of our efforts are sustainable, focused and for the benefit of walkers

and the many iwi, landholders and communities the trail touches. The next step in our planning process is to develop and implement an operational plan for each year that make up the new plan, this will ensure we have the best possible chance to achieve the objectives of the strategic plan. The full plan can be found on our Website – www.teraroa.org.nz We welcome feedback on the trail and encourage people to make direct contact with myself at any stage, by emailing mark@teararoa.org.nz Above right: Walkers alongside Travers River on the Nelson Marlborough leg of the Te Araroa Trail. Atiwhakatu Hut walk popular in the Tararuas

T

he track to Atiwhakatu Hut is well formed with all the side streams bridge. It could be called the valley of the bridges as there are quite a few of them and as well as there are a number of signpost junctions along the way. From the carpark follow the gravel track to Holdsworth Lodge, for two minutes and continue on and take the footbridge across the Atiwhakatu Stream. This bridge is a great for a photo spot. After crossing the bridge follow the track through the towering rimu, northern rata trees and ferns. The red and silver beech trees stand out. After about 15 minutes of walking it brings you to the first track junction. Keep to the Atiwhakatu Valley Track and continue to Donnelly Flats, a popular camping and picnic spot. At the end of Donnelly Flats the track climbs up to junction. At this junction turn right and continue the short climb as the track winds its way beside the Atiwhakatu Stream. Soon views of the valley and the peaks above will come into view with several bridges over side streams and then you come to another junction, that is considered the half way point. Continuing along the valley for about ten minutes brings you to a footbridge that crosses the Holdsworth Creek. This is a great alternative walk if you don’t have the time to go onto the Hut. At Holdsworth Creek the track continues along the valley and levels out somewhat with several more bridges to cross before reaching the Atiwhakatu Hut. The area is managed by Department of Conservation. (DOC)

Atiwhakatu Hut walk attracts many types of walkers By Bob Hargraves

Nineteen Wednesday trampers enjoyed the lovely 14km (return) walk to the Atiwhakatu Hut in the Wairarapa. We split into three groups, each with a radio and locator beacon. Morning tea was taken by the first swing bridge. All trampers reached the hut in time for a leisurely lunch. The

weather was kind so we lunched outside the hut. Along the way we encountered runners, dog walkers, plus folk camping at Donnelly’s Flat. We were also treated to several beautiful rainbows. Overall the track is in very good condition except for the big slip area which still requires some careful navigation.

It was near the big slip that a minor drama occurred. One of the trampers be came aware the radio had fallen off his belt somewhere, but where? Maybe back at the hut? “Try using a radio to find the missing radio, suggested our radio expert. It worked! By talking into one radio the voice was transmitted to the missing radio eventually found near a swing bridge. Everyone was back at the Mt Holdworth car park before 3.00pm. Thence to the Masterton I-Centre for coffee, refreshments and post tramp analysis.

This trip to New Zealand’s wildlife ‘ark’ is an amazing experience and a unique opportunity to see endangered flora and fauna in a pristine environment. Our very popular Big Omaha Trail is getting bigger this year. At roughly 16km of uphill and down-dale, this is for any walkers who enjoy a solid day out. With spectacular views over Pakiri and Omaha Bay, it is a wonderful day out on what could become one of New Zealand’s great walks. Mahurangi Masterpiece is another

EVENT annual sell out that gives our longer distance walkers a treat. Hike across beautiful farmland that follows the coastline of Kawau Bay. You’ll see gorgeous bays, a range of habitats and some spectacular coastal puriri and pohutukawa. We are pleased to offer a new Vineyard Trail this year that will culminate in lunch and a visit at the Sculptureum, an amazing new venue at Omaha. One of our gentler walks, this is a great way to taste local wines, make new friends and stroll the back blocks of our hosts’ properties. We also venture west again this year with two trails – Glorious Glorit and Hoteo & the High Country. Glorit features the peace and plenty of the Kaipara Harbour edge with lots of opportunities for spotting native birds and flora, and a lovely lunch along the way. We walk beside the Hoteo River during our visit to the award-winning Dill family farm, which includes 360° views from coast to coast from the peak of the Kaipara hills. We are very privileged to have access again to the farmland between south Omaha Beach and the Tawharanui Reserve for our Tawharanui Back Door Trail. This is only the second time that we have been allowed to run this walk and it takes in spectacular views of the outer Hauraki Gulf and the northern stretch of Tawharanui Beach. We’ll enter the “back door” of the reserve in the northern boundary and stroll the paths that are little used but much treasured by those who know them. We are delighted by the return of trails at Duck Creek and Te Muri. These walks feature glorious views, native bush, and the opportunity to take in local food and beverage. They have received rave reviews in the past and will almost certainly sell out again this year. There are two more walks potentially available for this year but details are being worked on for those, so watch the website and Facebook for updates. Make a long weekend of it and take in a selection of the great walks on offer. Check the website and plan your visit. Remember to book early to avoid disappointment. nlike the Tongariro Crossing that the world knows about and can have over 3000 walkers a day, the walk to Pukehuia in the Bay of Islands is one of the world’s best kept secrets! You’ll be lucky to meet other people on the track!

Pukehuia is a mountain on the walk from Oke Bay in Rawhiti to the Cape Brett Lighthouse. As part of the Bay of Islands Walking Weekend (October 18 -20), the organisers have organised a round trip walk which includes Pukehuia, a kauri grove,

and the historic whaling station bay of Whangamumu. The walk is number 8 in the list of 18 walks and called “Pukehuia Magic and Whangamumu Whaling Walk”. Just like the Tongariro Crossing, it is truly a magical walk. This spectacular walk is one of heart stopping vistas and rich history. forty minute bus ride out to Rawhiti which is the start of the walk. Before you start walking though you will start with a bit of magic. You’ll participate in some local activities, with locals Bob and Louise Clarke, whose lineage here, traces generations. You’ll make your own magical potion from the therapeutic kawakawa leaf as well as magical flowers that last forever. That’s the easy part! Then it’s a climb up Pukehuia. Don’t be put off by the “hard” rating in the details section of the https://boiwalkingweekend.co.nz/walks-programme , it’s well worth it, and it’s only hard because of a few hills – but no steps! Pukehuia is a significant maunga or mountain, on the landscape of the southern arm of the Bay of Islands, Ipipiri. The first hour is spent ascending through native bush to the high point with frequent stops for rests and photographs. The stop at the top is an opportunity to bunch the group up again and fill the water bottles – perfect for that ultimate photo of the Bay of Islands. you will also see up to the Cavalii Islands as well. The hard yards complete the rest of the walk journeys down a south facing ridge with a young kauri grove mingled with mature podocarp and broadleaf forming the canopy. Witness the recovery from pest control efforts, enjoy views of distant Mimiwhangata and the horizontal Poor Knights. You join up with the Whangamumu Track which takes you to the Whan-

gamumu Whaling Station which was the only one in the world that caught whales with nets, and it was Northland’s longest running and most successful station. Today the physical remains at Whangamumu represent the last factory based whaling station in Northland. The remaining historic structures include vats or tanks that held whale oil, the slipway on the beach front, and the old boiler. It’s an eerie and intriguing place to visit. Humpridge Track to be a NZ Great Walk

H

umpridge Track is to be the next New Zealand Great Walk opening in late 2022 after a $5 million upgrade. This was announced by Eugenie Sage Minister of Conservation in July. “This will be a fantastic addition to New Zealand’s Great Walks network. The Track provides access to a spectacular southern coastline and forests, dramatic alpine tops and historic viaducts.

* Freedom $245 * Prime $545 * Guided $1695

Hump Ridge offers the walker remote and unforgettable beauty and history,” says Eugenie Sage “This is a significant investment in Southland tourism and the Tuatapere community. Great Walk status can draw more visitors to this beautiful part of the country.” “Great Walks showcase some of the best parts of our country and are a great way to enable more people to enjoy and be inspired by nature to help protect it. “The Department of Conservation will now work with the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Trust to bring the walk up to Great Walk standard and change it from a current two night walk to a three night experience. Approximately $5 million of funding is dedicated to the upgrade.” Hump Ridge Track is one of three finalist walks (the other two being Te Paki Coastal Track and Queen Charlotte Track) identified through DOC’s search for potential Great Walks, which began in 2017 with a call for public nominations. “I would like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of the proponents for all three tracks. “DOC will also continue its work in the far north to progress plans for what is currently Te Paki Coastal Track, be-

coming a Great Walk. “Te Paki Coastal Track showcases a highly significant part of Aotearoa,” “The cultural value attributed to some iconic locations along the track would arguably exceed those found across other major tracks in New Zealand. “It is clear, however, that this experience can only be truly ‘great’ if it is founded on a strong and meaningful partnership with iwi and is looked at as part of a considered and strategic vision for sustainable tourism development in the region,” she said. The decision has been made not to progress with Queen Charlotte Track due to insurmountable challenges around surety of permanent public access across all sections of the track. “Queen Charlotte is a fantastic and highly popular track already achieving great results for the region. DOC will continue to support the work of the landowners, commercial operators, Marlborough District Council, iwi and community that has made this track the success it is today.” “Te Paki, Queen Charlotte and Hump Ridge are all phenomenal walks making the decision a tough one” Above: A boardwalk on the Humpridge Track. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Greater Wellington to add over 150 of its tracks and trails. These include short fifteen-minute bushwalks in Eastbourne and tough day-long hikes to remote Alpha Hut. Soon we will have finished adding Greater Wellington’s tracks and we will start work with another council or community group. Then another. We hope, that by gathering all tracks and trails information in one comprehensive tool, then sharing that information, allowing that tool to be embedded for free on anyone else’s website, we can ensure people have reliable, consistent information on public access to the outdoors. For smaller councils and other organisations that do not have many resources or GIS mapping capability, this is an opportunity to have a best-in-class tool without building one themselves. For people wanting to use tracks and trails, they will no longer need to look at five or more different websites simply to get the full range of track and trail options available to them. Walking Access Commission Our goal is that it will be a comprewww.walkingaccess.govt.nz hensive ‘one-stop-shop’ for information about tracks and trails across New Zealand. new track database setup by Walking Access Commission is growing as communities share their maps. Jim Robinson from Motu Trails came across our Find My Adventure Trails database. He found some trails he cared about were missing and worked with us to get them added. Jim sent us the GPX map files and photos for the Nga Tapuwae o Toi trail near Whakatane and helped us get the track description right. Now anyone in the area can find a map, description, and photos of the track before they go on the walk. Our Find My Adventure database (www.walkingaccess.govt.nz/find-myadventure) is a GIS-hybrid tool that allows people to find outdoor experiences of a type, and in a location, that suits them. It is nine months old and it is growing steadily because of support from people like Jim. It now has over 300 trails where people can walk, cycle, mountain bike, run, ride a horse, or walk a dog. The ethos of Find My Adventure is one of sharing, not owning. We are working with councils, local community groups, private landowners, the Department of Conservation, and trails trusts to build the database. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

he beauty of the Australia’s Sunshine Coast Caloundra region is sometimes best explored on the Caloundra Coastal Walk, a leisurely scenic coastal walk. From Golden Beach down south to Mooloolaba in the north, this 20 km stretch of track takes you past some of best beaches on the coast, estuaries and across  bridges and up headlands for spectacular views. In total the walk takes four hours, but you can stop and start wherever you like. To start with you could do the stretch from Golden Beach to Kings Beach, or Kings Beach to Dicky’s Beach which will only take about an hour at a very leisurely pace. The wonderful Golden Beach is where the Caloundra Coastal Walk starts off Here you’ll find the Pumicestone Passage that is a long and peaceful Above left: The trail just north of Caloundra. Bulock Beach is a popular spot for families and children, with the coastal boardwalk that winds past the sparkling blue waters (which are great for swimming). If you’re travelling with children, be sure to stop at the family-friendly Kings Beach where the kids can play in the water park or explore the rock pools. From there you make your way around the Caloundra Headland. A trail of plaques honours the lives of those lost in the Second World War and numerous ship wrecks. Continue north around the headland and you’ll get to see the wreck of the SS Dicky that was washed ashore on Dickys Beach in 1893 during a cyclone. Keep heading north towards Warana and you’ll find more beaches popular for fishing and surfing. This is the longest stretch, between Dicky Beach and up the coast along Pacific Boulevard and Oceanic Drive to the magnificent Point Cartwright Lighthouse. Maybe stop off along the way for

Eight days to Everest Base Camp Our journey to Mt Everest Base Camp (“EBC”) was in October 2017 and we are hoping our story will inspire others to visit this wonderful place. Mount Everest is called SagarMatha in Nepali language. On arriving at Kathmandu we were introduced to our guide who checked over our gear. It was more cost effective for us to hire (as we didn’t have) from one of the many trekking outlets in Kathmandu two x minus 15 sleeping bags and two x 1000 grade goose down puffer jackets which we collected once there at $50 US each item for 16 days. We were provided with a rugged duffle bag each; a great idea as there was no worry about damaging our backpacks by the porter. We were packed and ready for our start the next day.

Day One:

By Alan & Maxine Stringer

www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Our guide meet us the next morning to go to the domestic airport, which is a low profile building adjacent to the Tribhovan International Airport to fly to Lukla. There was an organized chaos at the airport. Kathmandu to Lukla flights Left: Trekking from Dingboche to Louche. The three mountains are, directly behind Alan is Taweche 6501m, middle one is Taboche 6367m, and the far right is Cholatse 6440m.

routinely get delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions at Lukla. It is always a good idea to add some extra days in your itinerary. We got away four hours later than from our flight time of 9.00am. Our flight and landing at Lukla 2800m went smooth. We should mention that all our meals, accommodation and trekking permits are included in our itinerary. After lunch at Lukla our first trek of three to four hours to 2652m was to Phakding, where it is called the “Nepali flat. We passed through scenic vista of prayer stones, suspension bridges, streams, farms, small villages with shops and teahouses, Buddhist stupas, prayer wheels, a bit of up and down trail.

Day Two:

Trekking from Phakding to Namche Bazar is five to six hours to 3440m. The porter has gone ahead as soon as our duffle bags are packed. Porters have their own pace and are not necessarily with you every step of the trail; there fore you need to make sure you have

every thing you need in your daypack. This day is all uphill, trekking at a slower pace as the Nepali say “Bristari” – meaning slow and steady. The trail is known as the Himalayan Highway, flanked by shops, restaurants, teahouses. The shops carry a mix of things for hikers and locals. You can find travel clothes, hiking gear, toys, bottles water, soft drinks, souvenirs, local made jewellery, toilet paper and so on. We used one purification tablet with one litre of tap water. There are five long suspension bridges over Dudhkosi River on the trail to Namche Bazar. You will get used to them very quickly. Suspension bridges are adorned with offerings of sacred scarves called “Khada”. The Nepali believe tying these scarves bring good luck and success in your travel. As you enter the Sagarmatha National Park, there is a small office, which all trekkers must check in and out of with Above left: Rob Halls monument at memorial hill. their trekking permits. Our guide took care of this throughout the trail.

Day Three:

This is our rest day, which is actually our acclimatization day where you “trek higher and sleep lower”. We would spend a “rest” day at Namche Bazar to allow our bodies to adjust to higher elevation to avoid altitude sickness. Namche Bazar at 3440m is higher than Machu Picchu at 2430m.

Day Four:

Trekking from Namche Bazar to Tengboche foe five to six hours to 3867m. This is a narrower and less maintained trail. The higher elevation and lower oxygen level is noticeable as we head towards Tengboche. After an hour trekking we arrived at a Buddhist Stupa at the mountain corner of the trail. The views from here were spectacular this was a perfect spot for photos. Throughout the trail you see mules

and yaks carrying full and empty cooking gas (Liquid petroleum Gas or LPG) cylinders as majority of cooking is done using LPG gas and Kerosene in this part of the world. Obviously the price of a cylinder goes up (7000 to 12000 Nepali Rupees) at higher elevations due to the transport costs. We were often challenged by a Yak or Dzopkyos (Yak-Cow hybrid) train coming from either direction. Due to the narrow trail with a steep mountain on one side and a deep valley on the other side in some sections of this trail, you have to find a safe spot on the mountainside when you hear the yak bells. Tengboche has the largest monastery in the Khumbu Valley, a spectacular building adorned with traditional Buddhist symbols and paintings. We were fortunate to attend the 3.00pm prayer. Tengboche at 3867m is higher than Mount Cook at 3724m.

Day Five:

Trekking from Tengboche to Dingboche five to six hours 4358m. The sherpa porters never cease to amaze me by carrying heavy cargo without loosing a breath. They carry this load in bamboo baskets balanced by only one head strap, often wearing flipflops. Porters use a short wooden stick with a wide handle as a walking pole as Above right: View of Periche at 4280m, we stayed here on our descent. Middle right: On the trail to EBC. Eight days to Everest Base Camp well as a stand to rest their cargo when taking a break on the trail when there are no rest platforms. It was a humbling experience to see them working hard to earn a living, with a smile on their face. With good weather you can see Mt. Everest flanked by Lhotse and Nuptse from this part of the trek. Above: Mt Everest is the mountain on the left in the centre group of mountains. Below left: Maxine keeping to the inside of the track when yaks are passing. Below right: The old and disused swing bridge at the bottom and replacement at top.

tion of what lies ahead. Gone are the suspension bridges, prayer wheels, and scrubby bushes as we are now entering into the land of the giant mountains, large plains, packed dirt, rocks and zero vegetation. The trail becomes less defined, dry and dusty in several areas. The towns become thinner and the amenities more basic as the trail leads a gradual incline up to Dhugla and thereafter about an hour or so steep ascend to memorial hill where there are many monuments dedicated to climbers who lost their life climbing Himalayan mountains, including New Zealander Rob Hall who died while descending from the summit in 1996.

Day Eight:

Loubuche to Gorak Shep 5170m, lunch stop, then onto Everest Base Camp 5364m, returning to Gorak Shep seven to eight hours. This is the longest day on our itinerary. When you look at the numbers, the net elevation gain today is less than 200m as we start our hike at 5000m in Lobuche and end up at 5164m in Gorak Shep in about 5km distance. The most important part to remember is that it’s Above: Namche Bazar – largest village on the trail. Below right: Alan & Maxine. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Just before we got to Gorak Shep we crossed a large moraine of the glacier Changri on the way. Nuptse and other mountains from the Everest range now dominate the right side of the tail. Gorak Shep use to be the old base camp several years ago but after the Khumbu Glacier receded, the current

base camp moved further up. We had lunch and a brief rest break at Gorsk Shep before heading to EBC. The trail goes through a flat sandy frozen lakebed up to a ridge separating the Khumbu Glacier from the lakebed. The elevation gain between Gorak Shep to EBC is about 220m so the trail to EBC is not really difficult but meandering the glacier with large rocks makes it challenging and slow going. You descend to cross the glacier and

climb up to base camp. The distance between the base camp and Gorak Shep is not that much either, about 3.5 km. The problem is altitude, low oxygen, very low temperature, and rocky terrain of this trail. You cannot see Mt. Everest from the actual base camp. Mount Everest is visible up to mid-point of this trail. A pile of rocks marks EBC. There were numerous

Quick Facts on Trekking Everest Base Camp

Trekking in Nepal to reach Everest Base Camp is an adventure of a lifetime. ... In 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary were the first men to reach Everest Base Camp. If you take the normal route to Everest Base Camp, the trek will take 14 days as long as you fly into the small mountain airstrip in Lukla. Cost of booking a trek online to Everest Base Camp. Prices range per person from USD$1,200 all the way to $5,000 for an average 12 - 15 day trek. Prices generally include: permits, round trip flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, accommodation, meals. Prices won’t include: travel insurance, visa fees, trekking equipment.

prayer flays, country flags, personal mementos and other “offerings” previous hikers left there. We were excited we made EBC; I would say we were over come with emotion really. After many photos later it was time to retrace our steps back to Gorak Shep for the night. While we were on the trail, we witnessed an avalanche with large sound and icefall for several minutes. Mt Everest summit is 8848m It took us another five days to descend back to Lukla. We had the time of our lives and would do it all again tomorrow. consider before tackling a winter tramp. Tackling a winter tramp can be a great way to beat the seasonal blues and cross a trail off your bucket list. Winter tramps can often mean less crowds on trails and spectacular views unrivalled by warmer months. New Zealand’s winters can be harsh, so we must plan and prepare for a myriad of conditions. Here’s a few tips how; Plan and be realistic. Before choosing the winter tramp you want to tackle, be realistic about your tramping ability in the winter. Above top: Kepler in the snow. Need 2 Know

things before tackling a winter tramp taking a turn for the worse, postpone your tramp for a fairer weather day. Layers, layers, and more layers. When considering how to dress for winter, layers are a great place to start. Finding comfortable, natural fibres like merino wool for your undergarments and working up to thicker, wind and waterresistant materials will keep you comfortable and warm for the long haul. Don’t forget the importance of dry, warm socks, hats, and gloves. Heat can escape from the tiniest areas of your body, so it’s important to stay covered up, have minimal skin exposed, and be prepared. You can always peel back layers if you become overheated, but you can’t add layers on. Bring goggles or sunglasses. Protecting your eyes while on a winter tramp is often a tip that goes unheeded. Light can reflect off snow, causing serious and irreversible damage to retinas, even in low light. Pack sunglasses or goggles that will keep your vision crystal clear. Stay hydrated and bring snacks. The cold can often lower hunger and thirst levels, meaning we take less frequent breaks and can become hungry or dehydrated quicker. Be sure to pack ample water, preferably in a water bottle over a reservoir in case it freezes and take frequent snack breaks. Dried nuts and fruit provide a great source of energy and little preparation time, which means you can eat on the go! Winter tramps can be incredibly rewarding, especially when following tips to keep you comfortable and safe. Plan, prepare, and enjoy your time in the serene outdoors. For more tips, visit DOC’s website.

A tramp that might take you four hours roundtrip in the summer could double if the track is covered in ice or snow. Being realistic about both your physical fitness and your ability to stay warm and comfortable in cold conditions is key to an enjoyable tramp. Additionally, plan the route ahead of time and study maps and track guides. Often times, winter conditions can leave less obvious tracks more difficult to find, making a tramp even longer than expected. Finally, remember to check track alerts on DOC’s website or call the local DOC Visitor Centre ahead of time to make sure the track’s access road is open and that your car can safely get to the trailhead. Many New Zealand trailheads can be up steep and slippery roads at the best of time, so be realistic of your vehicle’s ability as well! As always, if you’re uncomfortable, it is okay to turn back and save the tramp for another day. Check the weather, then check again. Being prepared in the winter means knowing exactly what the weather forecast is calling for, and then preparing for worse. Be sure to investigate precipitation, avalanche warnings, and freezing temperatures before tackling a winter tramp. Considering the terrain of your tramp (is it loose gravel, paved, rugged and unkempt?) will allow you to mentally and physically prepare with the right gear.
