Cortisol levels impact overall weight management

Fitness coach, Robin Du Toit, explains how our cortisol levels are affecting our weight management.

“The reason most people struggle to lose weight is a factor doctors do not consider enough, and that someone’s cortisol levels. Known as the ‘stress hormone’ because excess cortisol has been linked to promote weight gain within the body.

So, if you are stressed out, you are producing too much cortisol, which in turn can prevent weight loss and actually encourage weight gain,” said Robin Du Toit, fitness trainer and founder of Artisticfit.”

Forgotten World Highway voted one of world’s best bike rides

The back-country highway in Taranaki, known as the Forgotten World Highway (State Highway 43), has been listed as the 10th best cycle ride in the world

by Lonely Planet.

In August 2011, the first New Zealand Cycle Trail Heartland Ride was opened, and followed the Forgotten World Highway and an old coach road to finish on the stunning New Plymouth Coastal Path.

The route also rated highly in a 2018 Transport Agency survey conducted to understand the experiences of people cycle touring in New Zealand, with 93% of people who had completed it rating it as one of their top three cycle tours.

The cycle touring survey information is used to help plan investment to improve the experience for cycle tourists. It includes maps of the North and South Islands of: * The routes ridden by cycle tourists who responded to the survey * The roads most enjoyed by cycle tourists who responded to the survey * The roads least enjoyed by cycle tourists who responded to the survey.

Christchurch folk walking and biking more often

People are using their cars less and walking, biking or scooting more, the results of the Life in Christchurch Transport survey suggests.

The survey – one of a series Christchurch City Council conducts each year – questioned about 3500 people in July and August about their travel habits and the city’s transport network.

The findings show that while people are still heavily reliant on their cars, they are increasingly using alternative ways to get around.

“The proportion of people who say they are using their car less now compared to 12 months ago is 27 per cent – up from 19 per cent in 2018,’’ says Council Monitoring and Research Team Leader Kath Jamieson.

“More than 40 per cent of respondents say they bike more often now than they did a year ago while 21 per cent say they walk more often.

“The arrival of shared electric scooters in Christchurch has also impacted on the way people move around the city.

“The Life in Christchurch Transport survey shows the condition of our roads and footpaths continue to trouble people.

“Fifty-one per cent of the people surveyed said they were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the condition of Christchurch’s roads. Ongoing patch repairs to road, potholes and uneven road surfaces are the main reasons people gave for their dissatisfaction,’’ Ms Jamieson says.

Walk talk Australian award for Kiwi

Gerald Manderson of Palmerston North has been awarded the 2019 Gordon Smith Award for the top performance for 2019 by the Australian Centurion Club for his long distance walk in Australia.. Gerald celebrated his 75th birthday by walking solo from Perth to Melbourne via the coastal roads, a total distance of 4,249km last year.

He completed his walk in 80 days (January-April), battling horrendously hot and dry conditions along the way and carrying his own water as he traversed the desert areas.

This award is normally restricted to Australian residents, but NZ based Gerald’s feat is so extraordinary that it has forced its way in.

Shared path opening extends Northwestern Cycleway

The Northwestern Cycleway has been extended alongside SH16 in Auckland to create a 3.5km long, 3-metre-wide shared walking and cycling path which was officially opened recently by Transport Minister Phil Twyford. The Northwestern Cycleway now extends to Westgate.

Other significant changes on SH16 to improve traffic flow and safety include the widening of the motorway between Lincoln Road and Westgate with an extra traffic lane in both directions, improved and safer on and off ramps and a bus shoulder lane in both directions.

A map of the Northwestern Cycleway has been developed collaboratively by the Transport Agency with Bike Auckland and Auckland Transport. It shows how the shared path being extended will connect into the local walking and cycling network.

Awatere track to close

The Awatere Tussock Track in Marlborough is closing in April. Owners Simon and Lynda Harvey are retiring.

Walkers over the years were able to dscover close up the hidden beauty of a working New Zealand high country farm Far from the rush and distractions of everyday life, the Awatere Tussock Track was a three day walk into New Zealand’s rugged Marlborough high country.

The track showcased an integrated approach to farming and conservation practices and provided an opportunity to see unsurpassed views and walk where few have been before.

The owners Simon and Lynda Harvey, along with their eldest son Thomas, farm ‘Glen Orkney’, an award winning 1930 ha property in the Medway Valley, Marlborough The farm was purchased in 1985 from Simon’s parents. In 2012 the adjoining property ‘Stronsay’ was purchased and the two properties are farmed together On the land Merino sheep and angus cattle are farmed alongside protected areas covenanted under the QEII trust.

Cable Bay’s family farmland walk

arbara Stuart and her husband Ian own Cable Bay Station near Nelson. They have shared the spectacular scenery and beach access on their land with locals and tourists for decades.

“We’ve had a walkway for over 30 years. My father-in-law Fred, and Ian were the ones who were first approached by the Walkways Commission [a predecessor of the Walking Access Commission]. And they were pretty chuffed. To them, it was ‘our walkway has been selected – our over-the-hill-trip that people rang us to do’.”

“For it to become a public walkway, my father-in-law Fred’s attitude was, he was quite proud. He enjoyed sharing the walkway, and he enjoyed meeting people who were doing it.”

Fred and his mother Tess were keepers of the history of the old Cable Bay Station. When Barbara and

By Stephen Day Ian took on the farm they carried on those values, which she describes as “very much the old Kiwi way”.

“After about twenty years we were looking at environmental impacts

on the farm. We dropped 1000 stock units and planted pine trees. And of course, this gave us less income on an annual basis because it was a long-term investment.”

We thought, with the popularity of the walkway, there was an opportunity on a historical site by the sea. So that was the benefit. We now have a small campground and café that we have been able to leverage off the historic site and the walkway.

The Stuarts have a long and warm relationship with the Department of Conservation. DOC regularly sprays the track for weeds and keep it tidy.

calves. The Stuarts and DOC collaborate on safety too, such as last summer, during the Nelson fires, when they closed the track to keep people and the track safe.

“Nelson couldn’t cope with any more fires!” says Barbara.

Barbara says farmers should look at the opportunities that could come from having public access.

“Particularly if your farm is close to an urban setting. Even an hour or two-hour walk across private land is what people are looking for these days. They are looking for short walks that are within cooee of a reasonably sized township.”

Barbara says every farmer has individual circumstances. They need to do their homework, but some can leverage off the opportunity from public access.

“It seems to be you get hubs now – we’ve got kayaking nearby, people who have an adventure park, horse-riding and motorbikes on nearby properties. I’ve noticed that small towns around the top of the South Island people do a lot of cycling these days. So opening up a walkway or cycleway track is a goer really.”

E

astwoodhill is the national arboretum of New Zealand.

It covers 131 hectares (1.31 km2) and is located 35 km northwest of Gisborne, in the hill country of Ngatapa.

It was founded in 1910 by William Douglas Cook. Cook’s life work would become the creation of a giant collection of Northern Hemisphere temperate climate zone trees in New Zealand – a dream that would

eventually cost him all his money – buying and importing thousands of trees from New Zealand and British nurseries.

When his health deteriorated in the 1960s, he sold his property to H. B. (Bill) Williams, who established the Eastwoodhill Trust Board in 1975 as a charitable trust, donating the arboretum to the trust to safeguard it for future generations.

Hemisphere, Eastwoodhill Arboretum is said to have the largest collection of trees of the temperate climate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It includes some 4,000 different trees, shrubs and climbers, including 170 species currently on the IUCN world endangered species list.

sphere species.

The arboretum’s remote location served as an arboreal ark for these species, a place to propagate new plants that might restore species should they be lost in their native eco-system.

Today, threats faced by forest tree species – particularly those in developed areas of the northern hemisphere with climatic conditions similar to Eastwoodhill are varied and difficult to combat. Already, all over the world, forest ecosystems have been changed dramatically as keystone species are threatened or lost.

There is a distinct need for repositories of species for study and protection.

Eastwoodhill is rare among the world’s botanic and arboreal institutions in its ability to host plants from the northern hemisphere in relative isolation. This unique characteristic combined with New Zealand’s stringent biosecurity regulations, makes the arboretum an ideal environment for the cultivation of threatened species.

One of the delightfully quirky features of Douglas Cook’s plantings at Eastwoodhill is the “Cathedral” at the bottom of Cabin Park. This area in 1935 was the old horse paddock and it grew little more than poor grass and bracken.

Douglas started planting groups of conifers to form the nucleus of the area that he was to call “Cabin Park”.

In 1936 he and his wife Claire took a trip to Britain and it could well have been during this time he planned his very own Tree Cathedral, inspired possibly by the form of the great English cathedrals they would have seen on their travels.

On his return he levelled a small ridge and planted trees in the form of a simple cross. Eucalyptus Regnans form the pillars and Cupressus Lawsoniana form the walls and, what has only recently become recognisable, the chapter-house; a circle of trees to the side of the main planting.

The space between the great towering columns of eucalyptus is what gives this area an almost spiritual atmosphere, even today when some of www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

the original trees are showing signs of deterioration.

Many who visit the “Cathedral” comment on the atmosphere that is created by a space within the planted forest, even more so when they discern the form of the cross that is still evident.

Over the years numerous little ceremonies have been held in this special place; marriage proposals, weddings, christenings, and quiet reflective meditations.

However, many of the trees are in a state of gradual decline and it is time to consider and plan for a new Tree Cathedral and so continue the vision Douglas Cook initiated 75 years ago.

The new Tree Cathedral will be located on a large flat space some distance along the Hihiroroa road and overlooked by the curators house.

The small stream flows moat like around three sides and will eventually be bridged to allow walking access from the arboretum tracks.

This project is part of the master plan that was developed by Nelson Byrd Woltz, the internationally renowned landscape architects from the U.S.A., and is the first of a number of developments that will take Eastwoodhill forward into its second century.

Work on the site started between Christmas and New Year 2014. It has been cleared and ground work is well underway to provide for a raised, smooth and well drained space where the trees that will form

the Cathedral design will be planted.

The dimensions are exactly the same as Westminster Abbey, 170m long and 70m wide at the widest point and this is a perfect fit for the site.

Selecting the most appropriate tree species is the next step; these will be planted in double rows either side of a 12m wide central aisle. Their trunks, high pruned as they age, will replicate the massive pillars of a cathedral and their interlinking branches, the vaulting of the roof.

Several species will be used to provide contrasting textures and to ensure the design survives in the unfortunate event that some as yet unknown disease affects one of the chosen species.

The plantings of the tree cathedral were completed in 2015. The developing trees of the cathedral – redwood, dawn redwood, linden, ginkgo, red maple – have put on an impressive amount of healthy growth over the previous two years.

Out of a total 135 trees there has been just one casualty, a sequoia, which has been replaced. The redwoods (sequoia-single clone) which form the central pillars, quarter the size of the other species when planted, have now uniformly caught up in height and will soon be the dominant species.

Eastwoodhill offers six walks to suit all levels of fitness and ability Purple Walk

W

alks at Eastwoodhill cater for all levels of fitness and ability, from flat tree lined paths to a steep climb up Mt Arateitei which rewards visitors with glorious views of the arboretum and the surrounding countryside.

The walks are clearly signposted and maps are available from the Visitors Centre. There is a mobility scooter available free of charge from the Visitors Centre. This can be used on the mobility sign posted tracks.

Blue Walk

The Blue Walk is one of the flattest,

easiest walks.

It meanders through both the tall conifers of Cabin Park and the deciduous trees of The Circus, Corner Park and Pear Park.

Brown Walk

T h e B r o w n Wa l k w i l l t a k e approximately an hour, and combines the coniferous plantings of Orchard Hill and the Pinetum.

It also works its way through the deciduous plantings of Douglas Park and Glen Douglas before taking in The Circus and returning you to the Visitor Centre.

The Purple Walk skirts along some of the higher ridges around the arboretum with great views across Douglas Park and Glen Douglas.

Starting at the Visitor’s Centre, this walk follows the purple markers around Douglas Park, over to Mexico Way and up the lookout track.

After taking in the view over the arboretum the path winds down Burma Road to Cabin Park, along Brookside, and then returns back to the Visitor’s Centre.

Four walks at Hanmer Springs in one week

small group of the Tower Trampers from Christchurch were very optimistic to go tramping in August to Hanmer Springs, using this as our base to venture further.

Tui Track - St James Walkway - Mt Dumblane and Lake Daniels were four trips done in one week at Hanmer Springs.

We definitely had winter conditions but we were prepared to walk only a couple of days due to weather.

We first went to the Nina Valley but on arrival the clouds were thick and full of rain, we did dare to get out of the car but quickly made the decision to go back to Windy Point (Hope Kiwi Track).

That was a much better decision as the weather was cold but sunny and clear, for now.

We started walking a little later than usual as we had changed our destination. We had been to the Hope Kiwi Track before but never walked to the right on the Tui Track part of the Te Araroa Trail (The Long Pathway).

We had winter conditions with a muddy track now and then and of course a stream to cross.

Our mate Kishor was a very wise man as he just went ahead and crossed and then he knew we would definitely follow. If he had stopped I am sure we would have turned back as we would not have wanted wet feet, our feet soon warmed up as we just kept walking.

We still walked for at least two hours, one way, and wanted to head up to Doubtful Valley to the hut but knew we would run out of daylight and were yet to return so we headed back and will definitely do this walk again to venture further. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

St James Walkway

Our plan was to stay the night at the Magdalen Hut on the St James Walkway but our lodgings at Hanmer Springs were just too good, so we walked into the Magdalen Hut and back in a day.

We were concerned about the river crossing but it was fine, rather cold though.

We had plenty of mud and plenty of humongous horse poop but as usual we just carried on as we were focused on making it to the hut.

It was a very nice winters day and we had lunch at the hut and had

taken the billy with us so we had a couple of very hot cups of tea which was well deserved.

The scenery was so amazing and we could not have picked a better day. It was one of the longer days

as we were away for seven hours plus. The great thing about the walk is that there was no pressure and if we wanted to go back at any time we certainly could. You could walk as long or as short as you would like.

My Favourite Walk

Four walks at Hanmer Springs in one week

Mt Dumblane

Some Tower Trampers have also walked Mt Dumblane before when there were no marker poles, only cairns to guide you. Without the markers you had to be observant and watch out for cairns otherwise you would go in the wrong direction, but there was definitely no possibility of getting lost as there was only one way and that was up and up and up.

This time, to our delight we had noticed that there were marker poles and this made our day much easier.

We found out that the Mt Isobel Tramping Group had been working voluntarily and marked the route from Jacks Pass Road to the summit of Mt Dumblane. What a great achievement.

We had snow on the top and another magnificent day in August.

My Favourite Walk

Lake Daniell Track

The Lake Daniell Track is always a great family tramp and we knew that a new hut was being built so we went to check this out. This is a huge hut compared to what was initially at Lake Daniell’s.

The new hut will be ready in February 2020, but you can still walk in and spend the night in your tent or just do a day walk. The bush walking in is beautiful, it was lush and green. The track was also in great condition with a little mud here and there but not a problem at all.

We had a fantastic week and even managed to do a little easy walking in Hanmer Springs and of course use the hot pools to rest our weary muscles.

The week was incredible and we had crammed in as much as possible. We had no idea that we would be able to achieve as much walking as we did. We still have much more to do as well. The weather had been very kind to us.

Norfolk Island- a magical slice of paradise

orfolk Island is often placed in the ‘small’ category – so it may come as a surprise that there are so many tracks and trails to walk or ride but rest assured, there’s plenty of ground to cover on this magical slice of paradise!

We’ve covered a few of the trails in the article but there’s plenty more if you start exploring on your own too.

Botanical Gardens Boardwalk

If you have an interest in learning about all the different types of flora and fauna found on Norfolk then

you just as much. Park up at Mt Pitt and follow the trail signs through to Mt Bates, a short walk through forest and well kept grassy tracks. Allow an hour or so for a steady stroll with plenty of time to stop and observe the old radar station and WWII ruins along the way.

Palm Glen

this should be your first stop. A very well maintained timber boardwalk and forest paths located at the base of Mount Pitt will guide you through endemic trees and plants with identification plaques and some history lessons along the way. An easy walk with a few steps and some benches to have a rest… perfect for all ages.

Mount Pitt to Mount Bates

At the top of the island you’ll find the dual summits of these two mountains. Sitting just over 300m high these are no Everest, but the views from the top will amaze You can now view and enjoy the latest issue of

Tucked away at the end of Selwyn Pine Rd is the entrance to Palm Glen, a green parrot haven and if you’d like the see one this is usually your best chance. Early morning or late afternoon seems to have the most activity – move quietly and listen for the tell-tale ‘kik-kik-kik’ but be warned these birds can be very cheeky!

of the island. With a few different starting points and a couple of loops you’ll want to do a bit of planning before starting them, but trust us - they have some of the best lookout points you will ever get the pleasure of gazing upon. Some technical hiking and longer distances are involved with these trails.

The above mentioned trails can all be linked together into one big loop, if you drop in to the Visitor Information Centre we will be happy to give you a map and show you how!

Farm Road, this loop trail will take you all the way out to Rocky Point lookout and back. A steady walk with a little up and down but mostly flat trail and easy going.

Along this trail you’ll find great picnic areas, plenty of photo opportunities and depending on the time of year you might even spot some very cute baby terns nested on the pine branches!

Flagstaff Hill

If stairs are your game and you want to feel the burn,

Milford to Takapuna Coastal Walk

Y

ou can explore the coastline from the northern end of Milford Beach to the southern end of Takapuna Beach, taking in the area’s rockpools, beaches and scenery.

The walk takes you along the shoreline and in places it will take you right up to the water’s edge.

Along the way you’ll see sights such as the North Shore City cliff tops, stretching, uninterrupted blue views of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island, Auckland’s most recent volcanic cone.

There are a number of good swimming beaches along the way, from secluded Thorne Bay to the pōhutukawa-lined Takapuna Beach.

The Milford-Takapuna walk is best at low tide, as the rocks are exposed and the path is dry.

Allow about one hour 30 minutes for the walk one way for this 4.09 km Walk The Walk has a total ascent of 2.74 m and has a maximum elevation of 21.89 m.

This walk is suitable for all fitness levels. For the most part it is flat and

easy, although there are some parts where the path is rocky and rough, and can be slippery. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of dolphins in the gulf for an extra special sightseeing addition to your Auckland walk.

Stay safe on this walk. Be careful. The pathway in this area is not properly constructed.

Herekawe Stream and Clifftop Walk

or an interesting and pleasant stroll taking in a rural, beach and clifftop view the Herekawe Stream walk is the one for you giving three different and charming changes of scenery.

The Herekawe Stream begins to take shape in the farmland of Omata with a large proportion of the water coming from urban western New Plymouth which has formed the wetland area of this walkway. It is also home to threatened native fish and many native plants and also supports a great concentration of bird life. This walkway project was started in 2002 and had three aims, to establish an all weather walkway along the stream to link with residential areas and the coast, to establish natural habitat through the plantAbove top: View from top of cliff.

Over 6,000 native trees were planted by more than 800 community volunteers. A subsequent grant from the TSB Community Trust allowed bridges to be built over stream crossings to ensure an all weather surface for this walkway which follows the stream finally exiting into the car park and coast at Back Beach.

The walk starts at the bottom of Manadon Street cul de sac on the left hand side in the suburb of Spotswood behind the Countdown Supermarket on South Road. It is signposted Herekawe Stream Walkway on the foot path entrance with information retaining to the wetland area. There is a flight of stairs leading down to a grassy area.

Once at the bottom of the stairs turn right and enjoy the rural walk with the stream and wetland on your left.

You may even get a glance of Mt Taranaki through the trees if it has decided to show its snowy head among the clouds and enjoy the beauty of a small waterfall bubbling down from the wetlands.

As you walk along you will be treated to changing scenery. Keep veering left following the stream as there are several grassy tracks leadAbove right: Warning sign on top of cliff, Paritutu Rock in background.

Following the path you will be surprised to see a tunnel that burrows through the hillside and through which you will exit from rural to the coast, the smell of salt water, the beach and a car park.

You are now at Back Beach.

there is a wooden staircase on the right that will take you to the top of the cliff with fabulous views over the coast. There is a viewing platform on the way up.

The staircase is relatively new as the original one which had been there for many years was removed after it was damaged by a king tide and ex cyclone Gita and became unsafe.

The removal of the old one sparked howls of protest from beach users and the council officers recommendation against reinstating them was overruled by councillors who voted to fix them a move that probably helped them to be re elected at the next council elections by many happy locals, dog walkers and surfers.

Hence a brand new staircase and a viewing platform was installed.

It has 242 steps but as they traverse around in a circle half way up makes it an easy climb depending on your fitness level.

Once at the top you have a beautiful view of the coast, on the left you have Paritutu Rock and if you are extra fit stroll around to the other side and get even better views of the city and wharf from the top.

It is a hard climb and suitable only for the very fit as from half way up it is hauling yourself with the help of chains embedded into the rock surface. It can be dangerous as far as your footing is concerned but worth the effort. Not for the fainthearted.

From the top of the cliff you can walk your way back to the Back Beach carpark along the grassy track by turning right. There are several different tracks that lead up to the road so keep to the one that is closest to the cliff edge. It then veers away from the edge and takes you through coastal bush and trees and the view is great for taking photographs. It is quite hilly in parts but a real coastal adventure.

There are several car parks along the top of the cliff and the Back Beach carpark is the fourth one. It is the only one with a toilet beside it. There are steps down to the lower car park from where you started.

walk back through the tunnel and following the Herekawe Stream end back at Manadon Street where you started.

If you do not wish to climb the stairs from the end of the beach as we did you can start off from the Back Beach bottom carpark climb the steps to the above carpark, walk along the cliff and take the 242 steps down onto the beach, back again to Back Beach Carpark, through the tunnel and back to Manadon Street.

It is recommended that it is safer to do the walk along the beach when the tide is not too close to the cliffs.

Good walking shoes recommended and enjoy the rugged scenery.

Dog friendly all the way.

From Manadon Street the complete walk would probably be about one and a half to two hours. Easy going except maybe for the stairs.

Carter Scenic Reserve

C

arter Scenic Reserve is one of the few remaining remnants of patchwork landscape once typical of the Wairarapa - grass, wetland, shrub land, and forest. It is home to native birds, fish, lizards, and endangered plants.

There is the Kahikatea Walk, a 30 minute easy flat loop walk that takes you through a flooded forest remnant.

Nearly half the distance of the 1.3km walk is over the board walk. The balance is a track through bush.

In 1896 Charles Rooking Carter made provision in his will for the protection of part of his estate and it was gazetted as a reserve in 1921.

This area of swamp and semiswamp forest on two old terraces of the Ruamahanga River represents a patchwork landscape that was once typical of the Wairarapa - grass, wetland, shrubland, and forest.

Because Carter Reserve offers such a variety of habitat types, it has become a haven for some of the plants and animals that became extinct or reduced to low numbers through land

clearance in the Wairarapa Plains during the 1880s and 1900s. They include Brown Mud Fish and Coprosma pedicellata, a small leafed plant that grows in areas that are very wet in the winter and very dry in summer.

The Department of Conservation is working hard to turn the tide, eradicating weeds and re-populating

the area with endangered species. An ambitious programme put in place over recent years is now showing encouraging results.

Tree Lucerne planted in weed infested areas in 1982, now provide food and perching positions for birds which in turn deposit large amounts of native tree seeds in the area. The trees also shade the area and suppress further growth of weed species as well as providing protection for young native tree seedlings Hardy native trees such as Tarata Lemonwood, Totara and a variety of Pittosporum have been planted among the tree Lucerne. Rare tree species that once thrived at Carter and the surrounding area are being propagated and have been re-introduced to the area and planted amongst these regenerating forests..

Carter Scenic Reserve is in Wairarapa, 12 km south-east of Carterton on the Gladstone Road.

To get there: Coming from south in the middle of Carterton turn right into Park Road and after 6km, turn left into Carters Line and after 3km turn right into Gladstone Road. The reserve is signposted 3km on the right. The car park is about 500m along the driveway.

Coming from the north after 4 km south of Masterton turn left into East Tarataki Road for 4.5 km, turn right into Carters Line and after 4km turn left into Gladstone Road. The reserve is signposted 3km on the right. The car park is about 500m along the driveway.

t takes about two hours to walk along the waterside path from the Napier iSITE Visitor Centre to the extraordinary Atea a Rangi Star Compass site in Waitangi Regional Park*.

Be aware of cyclists as you walk – this is a shared path. But what a picturesque walk it is, to a goal that is truly unique.

Waitangi Regional Park is an oddly shaped park. It covers an area of 300ha along 5kms or so of a narrow strip of coastline, its boundaries swinging in to cover the Waitangi wetlands and the end section of the Clive River. It is constantly changing with tides and storms.

The Atea a Rangi Star Compass is on a mound in the northern part of the park, in the area where the Ngaruroro, Tataekuri and Clive Rivers, plus Muddy Creeks, all converge into the Waitangi Estuary and flow into the sea.

Atea a Rangi Star Compass is a spectacular site overlooking the sea. Its official entrance is through a whaharoa – an impressive carved gateway.

Thirty-two pou (posts), representing points of the compass, encircle the central star compass which is surrounded by plantings. The rising and setting points of the celestial bodies are memorised by using the carved pou and the horizon.

Maori ancestors used compasses like this to chart the position of the sun, moon and stars and thus navigate throughout the Pacific.

The pou were carved by local carvers in 2016 and 2017.

The site was the idea of Te Mataua-Maui Voyaging Trust. The Atea a Rangi Educational Trust was then established to administer and maintain the site with the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council who continue to maintain the site today and in the future.

It was in 2019 that a further 15 ha of wetlands were added to the existing area. Now a 30-minute trail starts at the star compass and passes through the wetlands, rich with birdlife such as heron and bittern.

The trail then returns via the path adjacent to the bridge.

This area was the first place in Hawke’s Bay where Maori and Europeans lived together.

The Treaty of Waitangi was brought to this area for signing, hence the name of the regional park -- not to be confused with the main signing point of the treaty at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, where 43 Northland chiefs signed the treaty. It was then taken around the country over the next eight months. *You may feel that the two-hour repeat walk back to Napier will be too much for you, so, before you start off from the iSITE, ask the helpful people there to arrange for you to be picked up at the carpark near the site of Atea a Rangi Star Compass. www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

tep back in time to an ancient world in Wellington. Enter the tranquil Fernery, tiptoe through the treetops on the Canopy Walkway, hike the trails to find the 800-year-old rimu.

Otari-Wilton’s Bush is the only botanic garden in New Zealand solely dedicated to native plants, as well as being the country’s foremost native plant collection.

In this unique plant sanctuary there are five hectares of plant collections and 1000 hectares of mature and regenerating native bush.

The mature podocarp-northern rata forest is the only remnant of this once common forest type in the Wellington peninsula.

Also from the Troup Picnic Area, you can branch off the Circular Walk about 10 minutes downstream to take a secondary track back to the main entrance on Wilton Road via the Waterfall lookout, up to the Wild Gardens and back to the car park (15 minutes).

This secondary track has an impressive set of steps that will test the legs and lungs of any trainee mountaineer.

It is also home to some of Wellington’s oldest trees, including an 800-year old rimu! Otari Wilton’s Bush is the only public garden in New Zealand dedicated soley to native plants.

Paths and Tracks There are 14 kilometres of walking tracks at Otari-Wilton’s Bush, ranging from smooth paths and boardwalks designed to accommodate wheelchairs, to rough tramping tracks traversing steep forested slopes. The major tracks are described below and are shown on the map on opposite page..

Please note: The nature of Wellington’s geography dictates that any track leading down hill will demand an equally steep uphill return.

Easy paths

From the main entrance on Wilton Road, there are several short paths, suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

Take a leisurely stroll across the canopy walkway to the plant collections or along Wilton’s Walkway to an observation deck tucked into tranquil forest.

From Otari’s North Picnic Area entrance, just off Churchill Drive, a smooth avenue meanders gently beside Kaiwharawhara Stream to the www.walkingnewzealand.co.nz

Troup Picnic Area. From there, the track narrows but continues up to Ian Galloway Park and Karori Cemetry, at the southern end of the reserve.

Average tracks

From the main entrance on Wilton Road, many people take a leisurely stroll across the Canopy Walkway, past the Cockayne Lawn and down the major Circular Walk track to the Troup Picnic Area (10 minutes).

From the Troup Picnic Area, you have a choice of several destinations.

A common option is to continue the loop of the Circular Walk, returning you to the Information Centre within approximately 30 minutes.

Another option from the Troup Picnic Area is to cross the stream and climb part of the steep Blue Trail, which includes steps, to visit the 800-year-old rimu. A trip to the rimu then back the same way takes about 20 minutes.

Keen explorers will enjoy the wild excursions offered by rough tracks such as the Blue Trail.

From the Troup Picnic Area, give yourself an hour to follow this signposted track, past the ancient rimu and on to Karori Cemetry. Then drop down to the Kaiwharawhara Valley and follow the valley track back to the Troup Picnic Area. From the Information Centre, this round trip takes about two hours.

Those with more than an hour to spare will be well rewarded with a trip up to the Skyline Ridge and back.

From the Troup Picnic Area, tramp up the Yellow Trail (branching to the right off the Blue Trail) to the Flax Clearing.

At the far end of the clearing, a gently sloping track (built by OtariWilton’s Bush Trust volunteers) leads through regenerating forest to an old farm track. Turn left at the farm track and continue for another 15 minutes to join the Skyline Track.

On a fine day, the skyline offers fantastic views. Either retrace your steps or continue south to Johnston Hill or north towards Mt Kaukau.

The Red Trail provides a 30- to 60-minute walk at the northern end of the reserve. Passing through the Flax Clearing, this trail offers wonderful views back over Otari and across to Tinakori Hill.

All the tracks are well signposted.
