Bushy Park a

Bushy Park is a forest just north of Whanganui located on the West Coast of the North Island.

It is not just any forest it is a homestead and wildlife sanctuary set in a 100 hectare native forest kept predator free for native birds and is considered one of Australasia’s top 25 restorvation projects.

It was once part of a continuous mantle of forest stretching from the coastal dunes to the central volcanoes, it is now a precious remnant of that temperate lowland forest.

It was bequeathed to Forest and Bird by G.F. Moore in 1962 and is cared for by Tarapuruhi Trust in partnership with Forest and Bird and dedicated volunteers.

There are 3.4km of metalled walking tracks through out the forest and a wetland area that hosts a huge variety of bird life and tree species

It is also believed to have the biggest northern rata tree 43 metres in height with a girth of more than 11 metres and believed to be between the age of 500-1000 years old, also to be the largest rata tree in the world. I wonder how many stories it could

tell and just how many times it has been hugged and photographed.

The well maintained walking tracks lead through the virgin lowland forest of many tree species including mahoe, mamaku, pukaea, rata and rimu along with many different species of ferns and mosses.

The beautiful wetland area has wooden walking bridges, viewing seats and views of both the rainforest and birdlife a great place to sit and enjoy your lunch on a fine day of course.

The variety of birdlife covers a large collection of pigeon (kereru) saddlebacks (tieke) purple swamp hen (pukeko)

Kingfishers (kotare) and white faced heron (matuku moana) just some of which you may spot as you amble along the paths.

The forest is alive with a cacophony of different bird songs and as we made our way along the tracks we could hear different warning calls sending out messages of our presence from the canopy of the trees.

You may be lucky to spot varieties of these native species as they flit from tree to tree. It was astounding just how many different species we could spot mingling together but each with their very own areas.

The friendly little robins peck around our feet seemingly not at all concerned as to how close they are.

There is a variety of paths to suit

all walkers some undulating up and down but not steep enough to be a concern.

Another great advantage to this beautiful sanctuary is the fact that all the paths are signposted with their name and the approximate time it takes to traverse it. There are seats along the way. The hihi (stitchbird) feeders in some area’s have been set up to enable the birds to enjoy the honey and water feeding stations. There are plastic chairs available at each station where you can sit and observe this interesting procedure.

If you happen to pick the right time you can observe the volunteers attending to the feeders. There are information pamphlets available.

Costing one million dollars there is a predator free fence surrounding the complete area of the park with a 90 minute walking track on the outside for those so inclined. The native bird life has flourished within this amazing structure.

There are many colourful information boards around the area, an information kiosk, lookout point, picnic area, seated areas, toilet, outdoor classroom and a must is to visit is the wonderful 1906 Edwardian era homestead registered as a category one heritage building.

The added attraction is a large beautiful stained glass window in the hall entrance. Rooms are available and the homestay is fully licenced. There is also a bunkhouse. You can picnic on tree lined grounds surrounding the home.

Situated approximately 25ks from Whanganui the signpost to Bushy Park is on the main road SH3 in Kai Iwi. The address is 791 Rangitatau Rd approximately 8kms up the narrow road to the entrance on the left signposted Bushy Park.

There is a two gated predator fenced area to drive through. A long narrow drive leads to a large grassed parking area situated below the homestead catering for self contained motor homes as well as cars. No pets allowed on the premises. Enjoy.

Northland refers to that part of New Zealand north of Warkworth, covering 12,500 km 2. It is bounded to the west by the Tasman Sea, and to the east by the Pacific Ocean.

New Zealanders sometimes refer to it as the “Winterless North” because of its mild climate throughout the year. The land is predominantly rolling hill country. The region’s economy is based on agriculture

(notably beef cattle and sheep), fishing, forestry, and horticulture.

There are many reasons for visiting Northland apart from the famous Huddertwasser loos in Kawakawa and Huddertwasser Art Centre in Whangarei.

One thing you will notice is the number of businesses promoting themselves as the northernmost of whatever they do. It becomes a bit of a challenge to see how many north-

ernmost things you can do! You can go to the northernmost point, the northernmost vineyard, the northernmost pub, the northernmost beach, the northernmost ice-cream shop and the northernmost holiday park.

One outstanding characteristic is that Northland is relatively uncrowded, with a population density of just 16 people per km2 and lots of wild spaces. It is New Zealand’s least urbanised region, with only 50% of the population of 201,500 living in urban areas.

The main population centre is the city of Whangārei (55,000), and the largest town is Kerikeri. Between 2013 and 2018 Northland recorded a population growth spurt of 18.1%, making it the fastest growing region

in New Zealand.

The greater Māori presence is a further very noticeable aspect. Approximately one third of the region’s population are Māori. Māori refer to Northland – and by extension its Māori people – as Te Tai Tokerau (the northern tide) and Māori language and traditions are strong there. Major tribal groups include Ngāpuhi, Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Kurī and Ngāti Whātua. Several of these tribes form a loose association known as the Muriwhenua.

NORTHLAND DAY-WALKS TOUR 28 Jan – 3 Feb 2024 www.footstepswalkingclub.com 021 172 3244 footstepsanz@gmail.com FOOTSTEPS New Zealand Walks ■

According to Māori legend, the North Island of New Zealand was an enormous fish, caught by the demigod Māui.

For this reason, Northland is sometimes referred to as “The tail of the fish”, Te Hiku o Te Ika. Northland iwi claim that Kupe made landfall at the Hokianga (although others claim this was at Taipa) and thus the region claims that it was the birthplace of New Zealand. Some of the oldest traces of Māori kāinga (fishing villages) can be found here.

If the Māori regard the region as the legendary birthplace of the country, there can be no doubt that it was also the European starting-point for

the modern nation of New Zealand.

Traders, whalers and sealers were among the first arrivals, and the gum and timber of the mighty kauri trees brought more colonisers. In the Bay of Islands, Russell, formerly known as Kororareka, was the first permanent European settlement and Kerikeri contains many historic buildings, including the Stone Store, New Zealand’s oldest extant building.

The nearby settlement of Waitangi is of even more significance, as the signing place of New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, between the Māori tribes and the British Crown, on 6 Febru-

ary 1840.

The Footsteps Nifty Northland excursion (28 January – 3 February 2024) gathers up all these fascinating features (geographical, scenic, historical, and cultural) in a series of wonderful day-walks.

From Whangarei, it ventures first to the western coast, home to the region’s famous kauri forests. Between 1870 and 1920, the major industry in Northland was kauri

gum digging, which by the 1910s was centred around the townships of Ahipara and Houhora.

Though many trees were felled during the 19th century, some areas still exist where this rare giant grows tall. New Zealand’s largest tree, Tāne Mahuta, stands in the Waipoua Forest, which we explore extensively.

The western coast is dominated by several long straight beaches, the most famous of which is the

inaccurately-named 88 km stretch of Ninety Mile Beach.

The slightly longer Ripiro Beach, from Poutu to Manganui Bluff (107km) lies further south. Two large inlets are also located on this coast, the massive Kaipara Harbour (one of the largest in the world) and the convoluted inlets of the Hokianga Harbour.

Several walks around the Hokianga are on the menu, including the North and South Heads, plus the Wairere and Koutu Boulders.

The northernmost point of the North Island mainland lies at the top of Northland, but it is not Cape Maria van Diemen, Spirits Bay, Cape Reinga, or North Cape.

It is actually the Surville Cliffs, close to North Cape. Cape Reinga and Spirits Bay, however, have a symbolic part to play as the end of the country.

In Māori mythology, it is from here that the souls of the dead depart on their journey to the afterlife. Our day of rambling within Te Paki Coastal Park allows us to imbibe this unique area.

The east coast is more rugged, and is dotted with bays and peninsulas. Several large natural harbours are found on this coast, from Parengarenga close to the region’s northern tip, then Whangaroa Harbour, and past the famous Bay of Islands down to Whangārei Harbour.

These form the focus of four fabulous days of walking. St Paul’s Rock, Rangihoua Bay (Marsden’s cross), Whangamumu Whaling Station, Mimiwhangata-Whananaki Coastal Park, Bream Head and Smuggler’s Cove are bound to be highlights!

Northland is truly different. Geographically it may not be far away but it feels like a world away. It’s a different pace of life, not hurried and so much more friendly and relaxed.

In Northland it’s not hard to find amazing scenes to photograph – they are literally around every corner. Why not make it part of your holiday next summer?

Keep Warm this Winter with Zerofit Heatrub

Zerofit is a range of base layers and lifestyle clothing straight out of science fiction.

Using your body movement, it keeps you warm and improves your performance. The proprietary fabric is a combination of materials to provide insulation and ‘friction heating’. It creates a warm shell around your body.

Every movement causes friction, which creates heat when you wear it. Zerofit call this science friction and it’s the nearest thing to wearing a space suit. It’s a protective skin for your body.

The Zerofit Heatrub MOVE is a highly versatile baselayer that has been independently tested and proven to be twice as warm as its closest competitor, and has been engineered to perform at its best with athletes training and competing in activities including hiking, running, golf, equine sports, sailing, fishing skiing, motorcycling, football and rugby.

The Zerofit Heatrub ULTIMATE base layer for protection against extreme cold.

The Zerofit ULTIMATE baselayer for protection against extreme cold, the ZeroFit Heat Rub Ultimate offers incredible benefits. Your body heat is sealed in like a standard base layer and, unlike a standard baselayer, the product instantly warms you up as the unique double-loop fibres on the inside rub against your skin creating frictional heat.

https://walkingnewzealand.co.nz/ product/zerofit-heatrub-ultimate-baselayer/

The Zerofit brand of active baselayers is the brainchild of Mr. Koji Higashi, owner and founder of Eon Sports which is based in Kobe, Japan. Mr. Higashi

launched the Zerofit brand in 2005, being a fitness fanatic, a single-digit golfer, and the owner of the premium end Japanese golf hardware brand Giga.

Mr. Higashi was frequently cold while playing golf or even while participating in more active sports such as running, which led him to the development of technically advanced active base layer products.

The Zerofit brand exploded in Japan in 2010 with the launch of the heat rub range of products that offer ultimate warmth but allow the wearer freedom of movement to carry out their favorite outdoor activity. ADVERTORIAL

Te Angiangi Marine Reserve for bird and wildlife watches

The Heretaunga Tramping Club van was leaving Havelock North at 10 am, on Anzac Day for the 72 km journey to Te Angi Angi (The manu whenua of the area/ translation is air, blowing, windy).

The late departure time was necessary as low tide was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. We picked up another member at Waipawa taking our number to 11 and headed to the reserve. There had been a frost that morning but the increasing sunlight was warming things up quickly.

Gale force winds were forecast for the afternoon so it meant an extra layer in the backpack.

The Downton Abbey-like Aramoana Homestead signalled we were close to the start of the reserve. Disembarking at the reserve carpark, we got ready for the day’s excursion. There were huge swathes of slips cascading down the surrounding steep hills. Reading the entrance signs, we

then carried on to Aramoana Beach heading south to Blackhead Beach.

The reserve was established in 1997. It is the only Marine Reserve in Hawke’s Bay and covers an area of about 1.3 square nautical miles (446 hectares), and extends one nautical mile. offshore. https://www.hawkesbaynz.com › sports-and-recreation

As we rounded the corner, a large sea-lion was sitting on the water’s edge. It was rolling on its back, then looked straight at us. We tried not to frighten it away as it then dutifully posed for pictures before diving back into the surf. What a buzz!

The day was turning out to be ‘one out of the box’ as extra layers were removed due to the sun’s

increased intensity. The predicted high winds never eventuated making it a glorious excursion there and back over the six kilometre return to Blackhead. The tide was receding which meant walking more on the flat black sand beach rather than through the rocks or up on undulating ground at the foot of the hills.

We were entertained by whitefaced herons, variable oyster catchers, pied stilts, shags and whitefronted and Caspian terns who were busy along the shore line and rock pools.

After we turned around at Blackhead Beach, the tide continued to recede exposing the large, mudstone platform with its large beds of Neptune’s necklace, sea grass, numerous shells, etc. The rock pools weren’t full of life that day but it was good having a look anyway.

Returning to Aramoana Beach, we dropped our packs at the van and carried on towards Pourerere Beach. Moeraki-like rocks had been sculpted by the tides and dotted the beach in this area. We didn’t make it all the way to Pourerere but is there anything better than walking along at low tide on a sunny Hawkes Bay day?

Unfortunately, “as of 2013, 20% of marine reserve convictions nationally were for fishing here.” (DOC brochure) We certainly kept our

eyes out for poachers. There was a group all kitted out with wet suits and spear guns but they were outside the reserve. According to the DOC Brochure, Horses and motor vehicles can be ridden or driven along the sand at the top of the rock platform but are not permitted on the rocky areas below mean high water. There were a few vehicles around particularly towards the Pourerere Beach end which disturbed the peace briefly.

But like us, everyone else was walking and exploring the rock pools especially as the tide receded. We returned to the van and headed back. I’ll certainly be bringing visitors here to show that Hawke’s Bay is not all about vineyards and fruit!

A reserve with fascinating range of marine life

Te Angiangi Marine Reserve is located on the Hawke’s Bay coast, east of Waipukurau. At low tide a broad rock platform is exposed, making it easy to view a fascinating range of marine life. Distinctive rock pool plants and animals include golden limpets, large beds of Neptune’s necklace, pink coralline seaweed, eel grass, small fish, crabs, juvenile paua and kina (sea urchins).

The reserve is well suited to snorkelling, particularly in the sheltered waters of Stingray Bay and Shelly Bay.

Below the waves there are about 138 hectares of reef to explore. The most spectacular underwater scenery is found in depths of 9-15 metres south of Aramoana. Dense Ecklonia kelp forest covers most of the reef, which is broken in places by long sandy guts.

Common reef animals include paua, opal shells and reef fish such as red and blue moki, butterfish, banded wrasse, marblefish and sweep. Crayfish (rock lobster) are also an important part of the reef community. Colourful nudibranchs (sea slugs) and large schools of butterfly perch and tarakihi are found at depths of 24-36 metres.

To get there: Turn off State Highway 2 at Waipawa or Waipukurau. The drive will take approximately 30 minutes from either town. From Waipawa follow Pourere and Gibraltar roads to Aramoana. From Waipukurau follow Farm, Motere and Long Range roads to Blackhead.

Five short all-weather walks in Auckland

There are heaps of wonderful all-weather walks right across Auckland. Harbour views, mangroves and pockets of native bush are only a short stroll from cafes or museums meaning you can easily find shelter if rain clouds are looming.

Here are five great short walks that will get the whole family moving –rain or shine.

Conifer Grove Path, Takanini

Walk from one playground to another along this family-friendly path in Conifer Grove. The trail is mostly on boardwalks or concrete, so it’s perfect for prams, scooters and small bikes – and it won’t get muddy if it’s been raining.

Enjoy views of the wetland and coast from the boardwalk and pier. Length of walk 2.4km there and back. Time 30 minutes.

Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive Shared Path

Te Ara ki Uta ki Tai means ‘the path of the land and the sea’, and this shared path is as scenic as you would expect from its name. Catch views of

Purewa Creek and the Eastern railway line as you follow the path from Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive.

Playgrounds along the way will delight smaller walkers, and the wide, even path is suitable for wheelchairs, prams and bikes. It can be walked in any weather – no risk of muddy shoes here!

Note that as part of Auckland’s Rail Network Rebuild, construction trucks may need to cross the shared path between the end of Purewa Road and the start of the Ōrākei Basin boardwalk until early winter 2023, and staffed Stop/Go signs will be in operation. Length of path 2.8km

Auckland Domain

Auckland Domain has a wide variety of paths. If the weather is gloomy, embrace the romantic atmosphere of the Lovers Walk through native bush. Length 3.6km there and back. On the most miserable days, walk around the Wintergarden. It’s warm and dry under the arched ceilings, and feels even more magical for being sheltered from the elements.

Visiting the museum is another option to escape from wet weather.

From Herne Bay, walk around under the Harbour Bridge to Wynyard Quarter. The views of Waitematā Harbour are impressive, whether you’re walking in full sun or under moody rain clouds.

If it starts pouring down, shelter under the bridge or find refuge in the cafes and restaurants of Wynyard Quarter. Length of walk 6.6km. Time 60 minutes.

Devonport to Navy Base Path

The Westhaven Promenade walking trail is a gentle stroll alongside the northern side harbour. Starting at the Devonport ferry terminal, follow the path along Queens Parade and enjoy scenic views across the water to the city skyline.

Walking the and promises

During Level 3 lockdown

whilst eight of us neighbours were sitting two metres apart having driveway drinks, we established a plan to walk the Abel Tasman together.

We set a date and booked huts and flights to travel to Nelson from Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland.

Unfortunately, as Covid took hold and our huts and flights were cancelled, our plans altered and planning continued as we re-adjusted our dates and plans.

Finally in March this year -the eight of us gathered in Nelson to finally achieve the lockdown plan and promise we made some two years prior.

The groups excitement is high as we eat and drink at the Sprig and Fern bar the night before we start our Abel Tasman hike.

Day one- Marahau to Anchorage 12.4kms

At 7.45am our shuttle driver, Jenny, collects us for the drive to Marahau.

Jenny asks us is there room for one more? Kiwi hospitality for hikers in Nelson is obvious as we stop to offer a lift to “hitch hiker Mike” all the way from Switzerland. He

quickly becomes part of our rowdy group.

We have a toilet stop in Motueka and all enjoy a yummy bun or two from Motueka’s German bakery.

As we arrive in picturesque Marahau where our hike will begin and where the water taxis operate from, we have our packs weighed and repacked (for some) as there is a weight restriction on the water taxis.

Day one did not disappoint with the coastline as our constant companion. A yummy, packed lunch and a swim at Apple Tree Bay where the sea was a turquoise blue and the sand a golden yellow. Feeling refreshed we hiked up and over to the Anchorage where the eight neighbours slept together for the first time!

A warm evening swim and stroll, on anchorage bay, to loosen tired muscles, provided a close encounter with a large stingray. The crystal clear waters allowed great visibility of this majestic looking stingray.

Day 2 -Anchorage to Bark Bay

Today we enjoyed never-ending views through the native punga trees to glistening sea.

natural rock slide (not for the risk adverse).

We arrived for lunch at Torrent Bay after meandering through the beautiful village, admiring all the baches and fire hydrants!

As we leave Torrent Bay, well fed on protein bars (thank you Frank) and the last of the fresh fruit, we head toward the idyllic sands of Bark Bay. The suspension bridge is a highlight, 47m long and this took us over Falls River.

Bark Bay hut brings toileting challenges for those who are mosquito sensitive. Distraction was imperative. We played card games and daily stuff quizzes which became our evening routine.

We were lucky enough to be given entry to the DOC rangers property to wait with hope for a sighting of the kaka, who apparently frequent his feeding station. We heard the kaka but they remained above the extensive dense canopy.

Day 3- Bark Bay to Awaroa -13.5kms

Today motivation has never been higher than on this morning with our first stop being Awaroa Lodge for lunch.

Today we are all talking about hot drinks, clean insect free toilets, and fresh food.

A short time later we are well-fed and watered and on our journey to Awaroa Hut. It is a short stroll along the beautiful golden sands of Awaroa Bay to the hut.

The evening was spent anticipating and analysing the morning challenge of crossing the estuary in the pitch dark as it had to be crossed at the lowest tide. There was much talk among hikers as to

the best time to leave the next day. We settled on 6.30 am.

Day 4 – Awaroa lodge to Totaranui- low tide crossing, 7.1kms.

With our headlamps and jackets, some of us with boots on and some choosing to tackle the estuary in bare feet. Teamwork was essential as some feet got stuck and some feet were sensitive walking on the unseen shells.

There is great jubilation at a successful crossing and this helped to carry us through to our next challenge which was from Waiharakeke to Goat bay and this included scaling the enormous boulders which were the result of the recent slips. Crossing this area had to be achieved before high tide. Once again teamwork got us through to spectacular Goat Bay where we enjoyed firing up the gas for hot drinks and a swim.

The last part of our hike showcased regenerating kanuka and sandy beaches all the way to Totaranui, our final destination. We enjoyed cool fruit juices purchased from the campground, to quench our thirst which gave us a wee boost as we reflected on our lockdown plan and promise.

The journey back to Marahau on the water taxi gave us all a sense of individual and team achievement as we not only observe the distance, we have hiked but the beauty, wonder and awe of the path we have walked.

Tokorangi Pa Track (Purple track) 11.5km

A more challenging walk, this 11.5km trail takes you deeper into the Whakarewarewa Forest. Starting through Memorial Grove, it them climbs up the Quarry Lookout track before branching off up to the site of an ancient Māori pā (fortified village), although nothing remains today. From here It heads into the forest, and loops around passing a number of the Whakarewarewa mountain bike trails before returning back to Nursey Road and the Visitor Centre.

Whakarewarewa Circuit (Black track) 34km

The Whakarewarewa Circuit is a full day hike around the forest, featuring a variety of different forest landscapes, and views of lakes Rotorua, Tikitapu and Roto-

kakahi. Taking approximately 8 hours to complete, with a number of sustained hills, it is an enjoyable day out for walkers with moderate fitness.

Mokopuna Trail 3.6km (dual use walking & biking)

The Mokopuna Trail was designed for easy family walking and biking. A great introduction to biking in the forest before hitting the main mountain bike trails, it is also popular with walkers and runners.

Puarenga Stream 1.7km

A hidden gem in the forest, the Puarenga Stream track weaves under ponga trees alongside and over the stream on several short bridge crossings. This picturesque walk is family friendly with a scenic picnic area beside the stream. This is a dual use trail, so you may also see mountain bikes along the way. Access from the car park at Planet Bike, where you can enjoy a refreshment from the coffee cart at an outdoor seating area. For a longer walk, you could also start at Waipa Car Park and use the Verry Safe Trail alongside Waipa Mill Road.

We are looking for readers’ favourite New Zealand walks or bike rides. Many of us go out regularly walking or biking on a route which we class as our favourite, for a number of reasons. Perhaps because for it’s scenery, it’s safe, it’s challenging, it’s flat, it’s hilly, it’s varied, or for whatever reason.

We would like you to tell us in your own words what is you favourite walk or bike ride and why. Email us a story from say 250 up to 1200 words including a photo or photos.

We will now give you a FREE subscription (six months or more, depending on the article), or extension to Walking New Zealand magazine for walks published.

You can also post an article to Walking New Zealand, Freepost 78863, P O Box 1922, Palmerston North, or fax 06-358-6864.

If sending a photo by email please make sure photos are in high resolution.

Above: Members of Pareraho Forest volunteer group Jamie Stewart has led the community enhancement and maintenance of a network of tracks, picnic areas and swimming holes in what has become known as Pareraho Forest, a corner of Belmont Regional Park that links the Lower Hutt suburbs of Belmont and Kelson.

Belmont trail builder brings people together

Hutt Valley’s Jamie Stewart is a passionate, creative and hands-on access activist. The Outdoor Access Commission, recently recognised Stewart’s contributions with an Outdoor Access Champion award.

“It’s an honour to receive the award and reflects upon the good-hearted efforts many Pareraho Forest Community members,” says Stewart.

Stewart co-established the Pareraho Forest Trust to undertake these activities and to encourage the local community to get involved with conservation efforts and have fun in the forest.

He expands the trust’s volunteer base with weekly work parties and events for families and athletes. For example, he established Run Manu Run, a familyfriendly run-swim event, and a 2022 Matariki walk to summit Boulder Hill at dawn, planting native trees on the way back down.

Stewart’s fellow Trustee, John Simes, says Jamie “can work with a challenging idea, too risky for most of us to consider or bother with, and with diligence and foresight over safety matters, pull it off, imbuing the participants with that highly infectious feeling of ‘well that was a great trip’”.

Since 2014, Stewart has worked for the Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) in various capacities. He played a key role in setting up Backcountry Trust, a volunteer hut and track maintenance organisation. Through FMCs Recreation Transition campaign, Stewart challenges the organisation and outdoor community to consider how future recreation decisions could be shaped by the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions.

The Outdoor Access Commission chief executive Ric Cullinane credits Stewart for his efforts, particularly his achievements in involving local community members.

“Jamie has made a real difference to the daily lives of those around him. His commitment and ingenuity are inspirational and deserve to be celebrated,” says Cullinane.

Canberra’s Centenary Trail

Walking & Cycling Canberra’s Centenary Trail, a new book in Woodslanes hugely successful walking guides series, introduces the best day walks and cycles for visitors and residents alike, ranging from leisurely urban strolls to the more rugged tracks deep in the bush.

Detailed descriptions and maps help the reader explore the parks, bushland, lakes, rivers and most interesting urban areas along the way. As with previous titles in the series, the book is richly illustrated with over 150 full-colour photographs and detailed maps for every route.

A summary table of routes indicating distances, facilities and highlights is included to help the reader find exactly the right route for the occasion. The book covers the full circuit, so those wishing to tackle the whole thing in one adventurous trip, with overnight stops, will also find it invaluable.
