id you know the term living room has been around since the mid 19th century? Before the term became de rigueur, the living room went through transformative makeovers. You may be familiar with its previous monikers such as the drawing room (hello, Jane Austen era!), the death room (many funerals were held in this room pre-WWI) and the parlour (from the French word, parler, a formal room to gather with guests to talk). It wasn’t until the American editor of Ladies Home Journal, Edward Bok, coined the term living room, and it has stuck ever since. Edward believed all those decades ago that it was foolish to create an expensively furnished room that was rarely used; he encouraged families to use the room more frequently in their daily lives. And I couldn’t agree more! Is your living room more of a “showroom” than a room well used? Maybe it’s time to reimagine what that space should be.

esigning for clients is a professional career that requires visual skill, organization, determination and conviction. Designing for oneself takes patience, perspective and the ability to listen to those you share the space with. For Toronto-based Interior Designer Shelley Kirsch, creating an addition and renovation project at her family home of 29 years was all about expanding the footprint of her 700-sq.-ft. main floor space. In addition to general space needs, she wanted to create an environment for entertaining and allow for small concerts to take place, given the professional musical career of her husband (a professor

The vision The space was designed and built to be open and airy, and connected to the outdoors. Three distinct areas (large circular skylight, full 10-ft.high wall-to-wall doors, as well as a west-facing transom window) allow tree branches to be viewed from all vantage points on the main floor. The new addition needed to have a strong sense of proportion allied with the rest of the house and make a seamless connection. Characteristic of all the designs that Kirsch undertakes, she leans towards the talents of artisans to create functional

items. In this space, the handrail, sink vanity, table and display rod were custom made by a blacksmith to create purposeful art pieces.

Art integration Art and architecture are inexplicably linked. An architectural space can be artistic in its own right, just as art can enhance the experience of those people who pass through or spend time in a space. When asked what her favourite aspect of the project is, Kirsch notes that the glass bird installation, titled “Migration,” is an endless delight to observe as the light changes over the day. It sits atop a Venetian plaster stucco finish on the east wall, and cascades various blue

a challenge, but once the decision was made, the idea was to make it look like a continuation of the kitchen. The new space has altered the family’s experience of living in the house and has highlighted their connection to the backyard. Nature is always close by, even when wholly inside. Connecting those intricate design details in the field was critical execution by the Eurodale team of suppliers and trades, who all performed with skill and precision, ensuring the final product met the design intent.

Quelle surprise No matter how proficient one is at planning or how advanced their visions may be, all projects come with an element of surprise. For Kirsch, the biggest surprise of the project emerged when the original back wall

of the house came down, and the width of the original house appeared to have doubled. When the drapery on the wall is open, the patio and garden seem to flow seamlessly with the interior space due to the sunken nature of the family room.

Interior Designer is qualified?

The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) shares helpful tips ou wouldn’t get dental work from someone on the street, nor would you ask just anyone to help you in a divorce. So why would you hire an unqualified person to complete your interior design project? The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) is the professional association representing Interior Designers in Ontario. Only Registered members of ARIDO are authorized to use the designation “ARIDO” and the title “Interior Designer” in Ontario. ARIDO ensures that Interior Designers are highly trained through a rigorous process of education, experience and examination.

All registered members are required to:

Supervised work experience Graduates then must complete a minimum of 3,520 hours of supervised work experience under a qualified practitioner.

Examination To complete their qualifications, Interior Design students must pass the examination from the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), the industry’s recognized indicator of proficiency in interior design principles.

Maintain professional liability insurance Because of the responsibility of their profession, Interior Designers must maintain professional liability insurance, just like doctors, engineers and other titled professions.

Complete education and experience requirements

Participate in ongoing regular professional development

To become an Interior Designer, students must follow a rigorous path of education in a four-year Bachelor of Interior Design degree.

As a practising Interior Designer, Registered and Intern members must regularly complete professional development with

specific requirements on learning about Health and Safety, the Building Code, Accessibility, Occupational Safety, and Health Administration.

Comply with a professional code of ethics and standards of practice ARIDO’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice outline how Registered Interior Designers must comport themselves in their work on issues such as contracts, maintaining confidentiality, and other matters that protect the public.

Comply with the Ontario government’s qualification and registration requirements under the Ontario Building Code In addition to the above requirements mandated by ARIDO, qualified Interior Designers are trained in and have extensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code. Because of their work to build and renovate interior spaces in Ontario, Interior Designers must have a strong and up to date knowledge of the Code.

It just so happens that the 2022 colour of the year is a hue of many different moods. Green was the common choice among the world’s top colour influencers, and a very deliberate one at that. Green is often associated with growth and renewal, calmness and connection to the Earth and self – something many of us have been seeking more of, given recent global events. From cool, misty tones to warm, mossy neutrals, you’ll see many variations of this hot hue in every room of the home, from kitchens and living rooms to bedrooms and baths. So, expect to see it gracing walls, furniture, cabinetry, even doors and trim. So, what’s behind the big push toward green in 2022? This trend largely stems from a heightened environmental consciousness and organic living as a leading lifestyle trend. To me, no living room is complete without including some pillows that bring extra comfort, as well as style and personality. If your room already has a lot of patterns from the sofa, window treatments or floor coverings, then you can select pillow fabrics that are quieter. Use your pillow selection to pull together other elements in the room, creating a cohesive colour palette. The pillows should complement the sofa or chair they are placed on. An easy formula is to pick one small print/pattern, one large pattern, and one solid. WINDOW TREATMENTS When deciding on the right type of window treatments for your livingroom, consider your needs first. For instance, if your room lets in a lot of natural light or is visible to your surrounding neighbours, I suggest having a privacy blind installed. This can be in the form of a roller shade or silhouettes. This type of window treatment helps to diffuse light and provide privacy; however, I often don’t stop there, as this style is most often functional and not decorative. On top of privacy shades, especially in a living room space, I like to add drapery panels to impart a decorative element to the windows. ur Met Condo Project took a one-bedroom plus den condo and renovated the space for a client who loves to entertain and knows how to mix a great cocktail. She wanted to maximize the 624-sq.-ft. space and provide functionality for entertaining. We checked off her requests while using pops of earthy pink, complemented by purple and green accents throughout. Starting in the living room, we placed a wide media unit with tons of storage opposite a deep sofa/ chaise combo, perfect for spending a cosy night in or hosting friends.

Smaller side tables and accents complete the look and are grounded by a large area rug, making the space feel bigger. Our client requested a bar cart, which would have been a constant obstacle in the small space. Instead, mounting a long, shallow wall unit along the hallway provides a home for bottles, cocktail supplies, and bar accessories while leaving a surface to mix drinks and keep the limited kitchen counter space free when entertaining. A round counter height table doubles as extra space for meal prep in the L-shaped kitchen, and is surrounded by sleek chairs covered in purple wool.

The den proved to be a tricky space that needed to serve as both an office and a bedroom for the occasional overnight guest. We selected an L-shaped desk with wall mounted storage overhead, both open and closed, to showcase some of her personality and bring in some greenery. A lounger that becomes a single bed provides a snug spot for visiting guests. In the bedroom, we maximized every square inch, while keeping a light and airy feel. The queen sized bed fits comfortably with brass and

white end tables on either side. Painted panels provide a costeffective detail that frames the end tables and bed perfectly. The accent furniture is small in footprint and lightweight. Therefore, it had to possess the versatility to move around as required and serve multiple functions. In addition to a clever layout, we installed smart switches, plugs and Google products, to create an interactive and perfectly synced space for our client’s busy life.

Designer Kate Davidson shares some

helpful advice to maximize your small home

mall spaces have become the norm, as real estate values continue to rise and people recognize the economic and environmental benefits of compact living. From a design perspective, my clients approach their small space in two ways: To make it appear larger, or accept and appreciate its compact, cosy attributes. The challenges of decorating and living in a small

area are real, but they’re not insurmountable. Here are some tips to make the most of every inch, with examples of how I put these principles into practice.

Make the most of it There are a few tricks for living larger than your square footage may dictate on paper. Start by decluttering. Nothing makes a home feel cramped like an onslaught of

stuff. Evaluate everything. If you don’t love it or haven’t used it in the past six months, except for seasonal items, get rid of it. You can sell or donate gently used items and recycle or trash the rest. Then, explore storage solutions to tackle everything you intend to keep. Storage is an industry with no shortage of custom and off-the-shelf products to tackle clutter, from shelves and cabinets, storage baskets and boxes, and multi-functional furniture. renoanddecor.com

Beyond storage, some decorating strategies can create the illusion of space. Start by painting the walls in a light, neutral colour. Lighter colours make the walls appear further away, thus enhancing the sense of space, while darker hues tend to pull them in. This trick applies to large-scale furnishings and floor coverings, as well. While we’re on the subject of light, maximize the natural light in the room by removing heavy window treatments. Then add mirrors to double the natural light visually. Beyond this, ensure you have sufficient lighting in the form of ambient (overhead) fixtures, task lighting and accent lighting. By brightening the space, you’ll increase its function and your perception of its size.

I applied these light principles in this space, which features continuous white walls and trim, with light furniture. The rug underfoot anchors the area while tying together the light and dark tones of the space. The wood furniture echoes the hardwood too. Here, less really is more, with minimal use of accessories and a focus on simplicity. When choosing furniture, consider scale. It’s unlikely that a compact home has the room for a massive sectional or a huge dining table with seating for 12. Instead, choose pieces with slim silhouettes, lower profiles and legs that let light pass through. Also, look for furniture that has see-through and reflective

It’s not small, it’s ‘cosy’ Of course, I believe that small spaces are appealing. They offer several benefits: They’re easier to clean and organize; they cost less to finish, furnish and maintain; and have a warm, welcoming vibe that’s impossible to replicate in wide, open areas. Don’t fight it. Instead, play up the cosy factor by focusing on softness and warmth – layer in lots of texture

by marrying materials such as natural wood, leather and various textiles. Cover the walls with dark, brooding paintings or photographs, and add dimmer switches on all light sources, allowing you to adjust the light level based on your activity and mood. Your home may be short on square footage, but every small space offers endless opportunities. It just takes some creativity, an open mind and, at times, a little professional help!

A cosy couch, gallery wall and decorative details helped bring a family room together

rom the new floors that were installed more than a year ago to the gallery wall that took hours of planning (and a few years of curation), it’s a relief to finally have one of the most-used rooms in our home complete: The family room. Shortly after we moved in, the first thing we realized was that we needed a bigger and more comfortable

sofa. A sofa is a huge investment piece, and I didn’t want to get it wrong. Obsessed with the Mario Bellini Camaleonda sofa, made popular by the design-forward Athena Calderone of Eye Swoon, I stumbled upon Eternity Modern, a Vancouverbased furniture retailer which sells custom replicas (including the Camaleonda) of some of the most wellknown designs on the market – from Finn Juhl’s curvy

Initially, I had my eyes set on the Camaleonda, but after measuring (and measuring again), I realized the piece was going to overwhelm our space. Luckily for me, they had a gorgeous replica of Restoration Hardware’s Cloud Sofa, called the EM Sky Sofa. I immediately ordered a handful of free swatches (you pay $5 shipping) to see what the fabrics looked like in person. I loved the warmth of the Textured Linen Weave in Flax, so we measured again, this time for the Sky Sofa and it fit perfectly. In the end, what sold me on Eternity Modern was the quality. The sofa frame is made of pure wood (no MDF here), the cushion covers are removable, and all of their materials are flame retardant-free and non-toxic (aka kid friendly). The company also offers a guarantee on all of its products, which gave me peace of mind. We ordered four pieces to create a sectional: Two ends, a middle and an ottoman. Because everything is made to order, it takes anywhere from eight to 12 weeks to be delivered, so keep that in mind before tossing your old sofa. When the couch finally arrived, it was like Christmas morning. Now our family of three has more than enough space to sit together, watch TV or hang out, and it’s deep enough to curl up your legs. We complemented the couch with a media storage unit from EQ3, updated our old light fixture with a modern chandelier and replaced our blinds with roman shades. From a design-perspective, the detail we didn’t plan at first, but absolutely love, is the addition of the applied moulding, which we’ve installed throughout the living and family area. With our almost 10-ft. ceilings, the blank wall behind the couch created a void in the room. My sister-inlaw (the Interior Designer who’s been helping me from the start) suggested the moulding, and I was instantly sold. She helped me select what style of moulding and designed the layout for us. One adjustment we had to make that added an unexpected cost, was hiring an electrician to move five electrical outlets that were in line with the moulding. After painting the room in three coats of a muted pink called Whitewater Bay by Benjamin Moore, my husband and I painted the moulding (two coats of primer and one coat of paint) before it went on the wall. Using a laser level, and measuring a few times, we worked together to put the moulding up. Once it was secured, we used caulking to fill in the gaps between the wall and the moulding (the joys of old, wavy walls), then we applied wood filler over the nails, which needed to be lightly sanded, and finished with two more coats of paint. The final touch to the room, which was the most fun to plan, but also the most time-consuming to research, was

the gallery wall. We used almost all of the same prints from the gallery wall in our condo, but needed half a dozen more. From prints on Etsy to vintage finds from Montana Labelle (and one photo by yours truly), I picked pieces we loved, mixing photography with abstract, making sure to have a variety of textures and injecting just a touch of colour. The room took time and effort but my family and I are so happy with the final results.

Slammed for space? Designer Jo Alcorn shares how she turned a cramped area into a functional WFH office

orking or learning from home is here to stay for some, so it seems for a while still. However, with space being tight in many homes, I’m encouraging families to develop unique areas that 54

can be turned into work nooks for office workers or school-aged kids alike. I recently turned this small cubby into a gorgeous office that almost anyone would want to work in. The space is only six-by-seven-ft. wide (the size of a walk-in closet). It’s essential to get creative with every inch of our

homes – and we sure did with this room! Here are my tips to create a cosy office nook in your home.

Creative corners Don’t dismiss any small corner of your home. This space was actually in the homeowner’s furnace room.

The ceiling is partly exposed, the floors were raw concrete, yet I could envision how cute this small area could be. Think of spots that you are not utilizing to their total capacity – a closet, a corner in a larger room… almost any space can be turned into a nook for home office use.

Get vertical I really wanted to make an impact in this tiny zone and needed a showstopper, and this gorgeous, unique wall treatment from Metrie does the trick. It’s 3D wall panelling made from repurposed solid teak wood. Installation was fast and easy, thanks to the interlocking design and mesh-backing of the panels. A Masonite Logan barn door from Metrie helps reduce noise and provide privacy for the office.

Home offices and hackers Technology is a given when creating a workspace. However,

something I never used to think of when designing an office was security. With people working from home and kids learning virtually, software security is a priority. ome offices are becoming the new norm for businesses and employees everywhere. So, how can we create a space that optimizes productivity within our own homes without taking over our personal space? I’m here to share some tips and tricks for creating an office space that works for you, no matter the size of your dwelling. The very first tip is to work in a space with a table or desk. Duh! I know, it seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people work from their sofas. Working from the couch not only sends your mind the wrong message, but it is incredibly hard on your body. Your laptop should never be on your lap (ironic, I know) unless you want to be dealing with severe back issues once this is all over. With your laptop on a desk or table, this allows you to sit in a chair with proper posture and your arms to function at a 90-degree angle. Trust me – your body will thank you later. Now that we know where to set up shop, how can we make this a great space for work during an eight-hour office day? The next thing I would recommend is to create a space that is pleasant to work in. Natural light will help keep you alert. Working all day in a den with no windows can become exhausting, and therefore lower your level of productivity. On the other hand, dens are great for regular life, where you pop in and out for an hour to check

email. During an entire day’s work, however, you might want to consider rearranging some furniture to place your desk near a window in such a way that your laptop doesn’t pick up a glare. If this means setting up a desk in a common area, that’s ok. Just make sure that everything in your office has a home so that at the end of the workday, you can put it all back where it belongs, and you’re not looking at a messy desk for the rest of the evening. This rule goes for any dedicated office spaces, as well. Just because you can close the door and hide the mess doesn’t mean you should. Every day should be started with a clean slate, and that means a clean desk! A de-cluttered space is a decluttered mind. When your mind is clear, you’re not only happier but also

more productive. There’s a lot to be said about valuing our mental health. This is why things such as natural light are so important. Also, consider decorating your home office space with some plants to help purify the air while you work, even if this means moving a little plant from the living room to your workspace during the day and moving it back when you’re done. My final tip is to create a schedule for your workday. This not only keeps you on track with work tasks, but also helps you avoid trips to the fridge every five minutes looking for a snack. Set specific times for lunch and breaks. Set the alarm if you have to. This will get you into a routine and boost your productivity throughout the day.

Hang your laundry Each Canadian uses an average of about 100 kilowatt-hours of energy drying clothes in the clothes dryer annually. Your clothes dryer uses as much power as 225 lightbulbs. In total, for all Canadians, this is roughly equivalent to the output of three coal-fired power plants per year. It’s important to note that you can save up to $250 a year by drying your clothes outside.

Buy a rake This suggestion is a not-so-subtle way of saying that you should not buy a gas-powered leaf blower. And if you have one, ignore it and let it hang in the garage until it rots. Giving it away means that someone else might use it, and that would defeat the purpose. If everyone who uses a leaf blower instead used a fan rake (on the lawn) or a broom (on hard surfaces), imagine how much quieter our neighbourhoods would be. And how much more satisfying yard cleaning could be. There is more

They are insect and disease free, for the most part, and they attract all kinds of pollinating insects, birds and butterflies. Many perennial flowering plants are very winter-hardy and flower for an extended period each spring and summer. Some of our favourites include bee balm (Monarda spp.), purple coneflower (Echinacea spp.), Canadian ginger (Asarum canadense) and Joe Pye weed (Eupatorium spp.).

oes your family need more room than your current home provides? You may be wondering whether it’s better to build an addition or tear down and rebuild. There are many factors that need to be considered when making this decision, including your budget, the state of your existing home and regulatory approval processes. First, let’s look at some reasons why building an addition to your home may be the right choice. A simple addition is a practical solution if you are only looking to add a little more floor area. You may want to extend the rear of your house to help make your ground floor living area larger, or you may decide to make a vertical addition if your home can handle the additional load. Building a second story can help you avoid costly work, such as a new foundation.

An addition may also be your only choice if heritage, conservation or site density regulatory restrictions make it impossible to tear down your home and build a new one. In some cases, it makes more sense to demolish the existing home and rebuild. Perhaps your home’s structure does not meet today’s building standards for supporting a second floor, which means you will have to build new to avoid a costly structural upgrade. When the layout of the house you want is dramatically different from the one you currently have, it can quickly become more advantageous to build a new home. There is a tipping point at which the costs of changing your current layout would overwhelm the savings. In addition, working with an existing structure often means losing the opportunity for higher ceilings or a fresh start on floorplans. And finally, your current home may simply be too costly to repair.

When a home has undergone a series of renovations, there may be a number of construction challenges to be dealt with before creating the new envelope. If non-conforming work had been done on the house in the past, it will need to be brought up to current building code requirements, resulting in additional costs. Other considerations are a damp basement, the state of services (water, sanitary and hydro) to the home, and the general quality of existing finishes.
