Excel Homes is ramping up the excitement in Edmonton’s new home market in 2023, as the renowned Alberta homebuilder celebrates its 35th anniversary – and they are inviting everyone to join the party.
For three-and-a-half decades, Excel Homes has been part of the energetic growth of the province’s homebuilding sector, and in 2023 they are at an even better position to help lead the industry to better growth and provide buyers with an excellent range of options to make the homebuying dream come true.

Excel Homes Marketing Manager, Kristina Plank, says she is excited at what the year ahead will bring and add to the homebuilder’s legacy.
“Since we first began in 1988, we’ve built over 14,000 homes in over 80 communities and we have received over 70 awards for design and industry excellence,” she says. “Excel Homes is proud to not only build new communities in Edmonton and surrounding areas, but to be a part of the community. We look forward to sharing many more years together.”
Excel Homes has mapped out extensive plans to celebrate their
milestone this year. These include the release of new anniversary home models, the opening of new showhomes in new communities, introducing new specifications, and offering special anniversary pricing.
Customer appreciation events, including rotating block parties, will be held at several communities throughout the summer, Plank says.
“We have a year full of giveaways, swag and so much more.”
She says Excel intends to celebrate with its customers, industry partners and everyone in the community.
“We could not have made it to 35 years without our customers and industry partners, and we want to give back to them to express our heartfelt gratitude.”
In Edmonton, Excel is introducing their 35th anniversary model, the
Lakeview, a 1,930-square-foot front-attached garage home with three bedrooms, and two-and-a-half baths. “It will be our new showhome in Edgemont and will open February 4th,” Plank says.
The Lakeview offers versatility, and room to grow in a modern design. With a main floor flex room, large kitchen, and a bonus room upstairs, this open concept model has lots of space for everyone. Perfectly designed for a growing family.
“We are finalizing the details on other anniversary models that will be released later this spring,” Plank says.
Excel Homes can be currently found in Edgemont in the west, Keswick Landing in the southwest, The Orchards in the south, and in the northeast communities of Vita Crystallina, Cy Becker, and Citadel. “There will be new communities coming aboard in 2023 – stay tuned for details,” she adds.

She continues that although it is difficult to predict what future markets will do, economic indicators – including a low unemployment rate and growing migration to the province- forecast a healthy new home market in Edmonton and the rest of Alberta. Regardless, Excel is ready and equipped to handle any eventuality, she says.
“Alberta is a very desirable place to live and the demand for new housing continues to grow,” Plank adds.
There are still challenges like high inflation and elevated interest rates to contend with, which might be seen as headwinds against growth in the coming year, Excel believes that the opportunity remains for significant progress in 2023.
She adds that even with the higher interest rates, it would be better to buy a new home now than to wait later.
“Buying a new home now gives you the ability to lock in your interest rate with a rate hold, which gives you some protection from future rate increases,” she explains. “In addition, the cost of land, labour and supplies is expected to increase this year–buying now locks in the best price for you.”

In a recent review commissioned by the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association, Edmonton was the top-ranked city in Canada for having the easiest housing construction rules. The recognition is based on the effort required to obtain construction permits and comply with regulations. Edmonton’s homebuilders are coming up with new, and varied processes that enable homebuyers to save energy and save the planet, as the next generation of environmentally sustainable homes become more readily available.
Today, more new homes come with energy-saving features and solutions, including better insulation, triple-pane windows, high-efficiency furnaces, and even their own solar panels that enable homebuyers to save on energy costs. And these features are welcome now more than ever, as rising energy and utility costs take a big bite out of the household budget.
Edmonton’s homebuilders are taking initiatives to help consumers in the fight against rising energy bills and help save the environment
as well. Many have taken up the Built Green™ program, and some are already taking the next level to building Net Zero homes.
Jayman BUILT, Cantiro and Excel Homes are among those who have taken up the green cause in a big way. All have taken a firm leadership role in coming up with more exciting
home designs that bring out the best in energy-saving capabilities. In fact, both Jayman BUILT and Cantiro are finalists in the 2023 CHBA Edmonton Region Awards this year for Best Net Zero Homes.
All three have partnered with the Built Green™ program to give their homebuyers the satisfaction of
living in a home that matches their aspirations to live a greener lifestyle.
A GREENER INDUSTRY
“Jayman BUILT is not only a member of Built Green™, but the founding member in 2005 and the first builder to register a Built Green™ home. Our commitment to ‘green’ building practices goes back many years,” says Dave Hooge, COO at Jayman BUILT.
“Consumers today expect that their builder, or any other vendor for that matter, take the Built Green™ practices seriously and contribute to a greener world. So, for us, Built Green™ is just how we do things.”
Jayman BUILT has already programs like Core Performance and the Path to Net Zero and they are adding more to this, as they introduce new standard features for 2023 that can reduce a home’s carbon footprint
and provide up to 50 per cent in electrical savings per year.
Gary Hoeft, General Manager, Cantiro Homes, says they are proud of all the accomplishments they have been able to achieve in developing and refining building standards to create high performance homes.
“Cantiro is proud to have built a number of Net Zero projects in Edmonton over the last few years and we are preparing to break ground on British Columbia’s first entirely Net Zero community, with 38 Net Zero luxury homes situated on the shores of the Okanagan’s Lake Kalamalka,” Hoeft says. “Our Net Zero homes have three distinct enhancements when compared to a standard high-performance home: reduced heat loss, electrification of the HVAC system, and energy generation.”
Hoeft adds that reducing energy loss is the first critical piece. “By increasing the insulation and air tightness of the building, we can then right-size the mechanical system for heating and cooling. By incorporating Air Source Heat Pump Technology, we can utilize the same equipment for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. Lastly, the generation of electricity back to the grid through solar energy will offset the electric heat pump consumption creating a lasting home that creates as much (and in most cases more) energy than it consumes.”
Excel Homes believes building a home through sustainable practices is “win/win” for the builder and the buyer.
“Every Built Green™ home we build for our customers is third-party certified to be top-performing with a healthier indoor environment,” says Excel homes Marketing Manager Kristina Plank, adding that the company is the second largest registrant of Built Green™ homes in Canada.
“In time, a home that is certified as being Built Green™ will be more resistant to overall deterioration in our contrasting Alberta climate, have reduced utility bills saving you more money in the long run and also be less impactful on the environment utilizing the effectively efficient resources to construct your home.”
She adds that Excel values “responsibility” towards the environment and their customers. “Working with the Built Green™ program helps us be more aligned in building our customers affordable, healthy, and sustainable homes.”
NATIONAL INITIATIVE
Built Green™ Canada is an industry-driven, national, nonprofit organization committed to working with builders interested in responsible sustainability practices in the residential building sector. It uses a certification program that promotes healthy building measures, such as no or low volatile organic compounds, heat recovery ventilators for fresh air and high efficiency features. It also serves to underline the economic and health benefits of building “green.”
Excel Homes“Built Green’s™ programs … address energy performance, and then go one to address other integral aspects of sustainability. As building code with minimum energy requirements is now in place, other areas are being considered more—water conservation and waste management, for example,” Built Green™ Canada CEO Jennifer Christenson tells Calgary New Home + Condo Guide.
In 2021, Built Green™ Canada launched its Net Zero Energy+ program for single family new homes, which it calls “a new level of achievement within the organization’s long-held, industry friendly green building program.” They’ve created a labelling program which provides the industry and consumers with clear and precise technical requirements for two levels of labelling: Net Zero and Net Zero Ready Homes.
She adds that Built Green™ has long been committed to affordability – for the builder and the homeowner –and to providing support to builders working to progress the industry through its holistic certification programs. “As such, for those units required to be built as part of the inclusionary housing mandate, Built Green™ is offering financial support: a full financial waiver for the home certification fees on inclusionary units, and for those builders new to the program, a waiver on the Built Green™ Program Fundamentals Training course fee. This applies to those units within a High-Density project that are inclusionary (as per the requirements of the municipality you’re building within).”
“We do recognize that the cost to jump to a fully net zero certified home can be cost-prohibitive for many home buyers,” Jayman’s Hooge says. “So, we do ensure we include as much added value in our homes while exceeding the building and energy codes, while still being priced competitively.

This attention to customer’s needs has paid off handsomely and Averton has amassed a collection of local, provincial, national and even international awards. Most recently, it took home the Best New Community in Edmonton & Best New Community in Alberta for their Midtown townhomes in St. Albert.
“Our Midtown community was purposefully designed by reimagining what a community could look like from the perspective of a resident. This resulted in changing the typical orientation of our townhomes to create safer/walkable streets, more
attractive streetscapes, and natural courtyards and amenity areas to encourage social connection between neighbours,” Lanni says.
Other innovative approaches they have introduced are private rooftop terraces for their townhomes at Midtown and Pivot in southwest Edmonton. “These provide a unique option for outdoor entertaining and enjoying surroundings without having to maintain backyards,” he says.
“Our Manhattan Loft-Style townhome model provides an urban, design-forward option in St. Albert. Townhomes in St. Albert are also Solar Panel-ready.”

Cantiro has made its mark as one of Edmonton’s most prolific homebuilders with a wide range of multi-family and single-family home designs that address every lifestyle need.

“In February, we will also launch two new designs for our Interior Styles for our Life Collection™ Homes – Birch and Shade,” she says.
Shade is the featured Interior Style for 2023, inspired by the return of bold Gothic design that balances light and dark in equal proportions in harmony. Birch offers a different look of natural patterns and motifs with warm upper cabinetry and vinyl plank flooring grounded with a base of black cabinets and fixtures for a contemporary look and feel.

Finely curated home designs have been a hallmark at Rohit Communities, as they master the art of living the dream with magazine-worthy interiors. This year, Rohit is coming out with even more homes that accentuate the style in lifestyle.

by PEPPER RODRIGUEZWhen is a city not a city? In Alberta, the easy answer is when it’s Sherwood Park. The hamlet just outside Edmonton has enough residents to make it the fifth biggest urban centre in the province, yet it has chosen to remain a specialized municipality.
But whether it’s a city or not, Sherwood Park is still an amazing place to live.
According to the Strathcona County website, it is not only the most populous municipality in the county with around 70,000 residents, but also the youngest. Sherwood Park only came into existence in the 1950s, long after the City of Fort Saskatchewan, Strathcona County and many of the county’s hamlets were established.
Today, more young families continue to be attracted to Sherwood Park as a place to live with its attractive recreational amenities, proximity to employment hubs, and tons of affordable housing opportunities.
GROWTH ON THE HORIZON
Sherwood Park is located just east of Edmonton, and growth is the abiding promise here. It is a community that continues to prosper with well over two-thirds of Strathcona County residents residing here. And more growth is assured in the near future, as Rohit Land Development ramps up efforts for the opening of its first development here.

Development, explains that the smalltown values that prevail in Sherwood Park make it quite appealing to homebuyers. And their new development, Cambrian, promises to emphasize those values in its design.
“Living in Sherwood Park gives a close-knit community feel where residents are more rooted in their community, enhancing the quality of life and well-being of all of its residents,” she tells Edmonton New Home + Condo Guide. “Focused on
community building and developing a dynamic environment, Sherwood Park is an exceptionally safe place for families to call home.”
“Sherwood Park is a great community that caters to all lifestyles,” says Eiblis Doherty of Strathcona County’s Business Development and Tourism department. “It has tons of fun outdoor recreation opportunities for any time of the year with its many hiking trails, snow-trekking and river valley access.”
DIVERSITY AND ACCESSIBILITY
Doherty says younger families are now becoming more prominent in the hamlet, attracted by the diverse housing types, plentiful amenities and easy-living lifestyle Sherwood Park offers.
She adds that average housing price is in the mid $400,000s “and you get a lot more home for that price here compared to Edmonton.” Those working in the city will find Sherwood Park’s accessibility a big factor as well as it is just about a 25-minute drive to Edmonton’s downtown. “We’re also just half an hour drive to the international airport,” Doherty says.
Residents have a wide choice of housing options to choose from, including multi-family housing, single-family, and executive estate homes to come. But the biggest excitement is for the entry of Cambrian.
ENTER ROHIT
Cambrian is Rohit Land Development’s very first development in Sherwood Park. The 300-acre master-planned community will be home to over 4,500 people.
Tucked away, just north of the Yellowhead Highway, Cambrian will offer easy accessibility to the Anthony Henday Drive and the amenities in Emerald Hills. Within its boundaries, Cambrian will provide a lifestyle of convenience while still creating that sense of intimacy.
“We have brought on over 200 lots in our first phase that builders are
beginning construction on including single-family front attached backing a pond, duplexes, and townhomes. In future phases, ravine lots which haven’t been available in quite some time in Sherwood Park will be offered in Cambrian,” Nibre says.
Builders will include ART Homes, Bedrock Homes, Gill Built Homes, Rohit Communities, San Rufo Homes, and Victory Homes. Showhomes are now under construction and expected to open later this year, Nibre says.
“We’ve started our awareness campaign in October 2022, and
since then we get a lot of inquiries coming from existing Sherwood Park residents looking for a new home, and from people wanting to live in Sherwood Park.”
COOL CAMBRIAN AMENITIES
Cambrian distinguishes itself by dedicating a quarter of the community to parks and open spaces, emphasizing the use of shared spaces that will bring the community closer together. There will be nine parks scattered around the neighbourhood, along with four ponds that will encourage leisurely strolls.

But maybe its crowning glory will be the state-of-the art park that will feature wooden play structures, a first in the whole county.
“The playground is centrally located within the southern section of the community serving as a destination for residents to interact, connected through multi-use trails and will connect to another playground in the northern section of the community,” Nibre says.
Split into two sections, one section will cater to the tots, with the other section for older children.
The playground incorporates parkour play elements, allowing children different ways of playing from a traditional playground.
The rolling terrain of Cambrian offers different grade elevations throughout the site giving it a more scenic appeal. “As you get closer to the ravine, lots will offer increased privacy and beautiful views of the Oldman Creek,” she adds.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY SHERWOOD PARK
Sherwood Park has plenty to keep its residents entertained and happy with its array of commercial, recreational and shopping and dining opportunities.
Minutes away from Cambrian, and one of Sherwood Park’s hidden gems, is the Greenland Garden Centre, a family-run business and a year-round destination for gardening, home décor, and other delightful finds, says Nibre.
Within the store is a full restaurant, Branches Fresh Food Experience, that offers delicious food, beautiful views of the outdoors from the dining space all year round, and offers outdoor seating surrounded by lush plants in the summer.
“Because of its convenient location and wide selection of plants, Greenland Garden Centre is the perfect place to get landscaping supplies for new homeowners in Cambrian. In late October, the store also transforms into one of the largest Christmas stores in the country –complete with decorated trees and festive décor.”
A favourite among Sherwood Park residents is also the Festival Place, which has always been the centre for enjoying live music in town. It is a vibrant multi-use centre for the arts, community and business that informs the cultural and social life in the county.
Sherwood Park has a multitude of recreational opportunities within its borders by just a 20-minute drive east is the Beaver Hills Biodiversity Trail and a little further on to Elk Island Park and all the outdoor fun they offer, including stargazing as part of Alberta’s Dark Sky preserve.
