Your home deserves
THE BEAUTIFUL PROTECTION OF COMPOSITE CLADDING The weather in Ontario can get pretty extreme — from rain, snow and sleet to days of blistering heat and sun. All of this can create excess wear and tear on the exterior of your home, damaging wood, brick and concrete.
A LONG-LASTING SOLUTION PVC cladding is a long-lasting exterior solution that will look great for years to come. The lowmaintenance composite cladding resists fading and doesn’t peel, splinter or crack, so it maintains its sharp finish much longer than other cladding options.
EASY TO INSTALL PVC cladding is available in prefinished, easy-to-cut boards. Installation doesn’t require specialized tools or protective equipment and it can even be installed using ladders instead of scaffolding, saving time and labour.
ECO-FRIENDLY AND GOOD-LOOKING, TOO! PVC cladding is made of up to 94 per cent recycled content and because of its longevity and low maintenance, it also produces less waste than other cladding solutions. And, in addition to its weather-protection qualities, it can boost your home’s curb appeal. Choose from a variety of colours and finishes including traditional finishes with wood grain patterns to create a striking exterior.

AQUOR WATER SYSTEMS’
HOUSE HYDRANTS
Aquor Water Systems’ innovative House Hydrants allow homeowners to access water in style and with ease. Not only are Aquor’s hydrants esthetically pleasing, they are composed of high-quality materials that are built to last.
A
ccording to the U.S. EPA, a faucet dripping once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water annually. Aquor’s hydrant is leak-proof, frost-free, and lays flush against siding. It is the first leakproof outdoor faucet and modernized hose bib for the home-building market. Aquor also eliminates concerns about freezing pipes. As soon as the hydrant is disconnected, the outlet automatically seals, drains and winterizes. The Aquor hydrant’s connection system is quick and easy. Simply push and twist to engage the hose connector. To disconnect, untwist and the water stops instantly. As the cost of water rises, homeowners are looking for ways to protect their from theft. Most solutions are basic locks with a physical key. Unplugging an Aquor hydrant provides an instant tamper-resistant fix, with no keys required. Store your hose with the connector attached – you won’t lose the connector unless you misplace your entire hose. Conventional spigots have a flawed sealing mechanism. The friction of rotating and compressing a rubber
washer onto a brass valve seat causes wear, which creates leaks. Aquor’s hydrant uses water pressure to keep its valve closed, rather than a screwtightened assembly. This valve design seals with the same pressure and motion every time. Unlike a standard hose bib, the hydrant cannot be over-tightened. Freezing temperatures can cause hose bibs to burst, often resulting in costly damage. In cold regions, homeowners must use shut-off valves, drain each faucet, then cover the spigots with foam. Aquor’s hydrant stops water deep inside a home’s wall for maximum insulation. Traditional spigots are made of brass, a poor insulator – even “frost-free” brass models fail in cold temperatures. Stainless steel has better thermal insulation compared to brass, so the hydrant does not need to be covered, even when temperatures fall to -35°C. Typically, brass plumbing fixtures are designed as a low-cost option, and therefore exhibit basic quality and construction. Every aspect of Aquor’s design was taken into account to create the most robust valve possible. The original concept was engineered for use on marine

vessel decks and water tanks, then adapted for homes. The hydrant body is composed of marine-grade 316L stainless steel and is virtually indestructible. The internal seals are Viton®O-rings, commonly used in aerospace and automotive applications, which are renowned for longevity. Aquor connectors are moulded from a high-tech polymer called DuPont Delrin®. Most spigots are a single-unit design, welded shut with no access to the valve seat. Only the handle and the stem can be removed or replaced, and it is impossible to visually inspect the point where it seals. Aquor’s rear valve inlet unscrews from the body, allowing access for maintenance.
The next generation of outdoor faucets.
Introducing the Aquor® House Hydrant. It’s the world’s first stainless steel wall hydrant that allows instant, effortless access to your water. The flush mount design serves your outdoor faucet needs. It’s both easy to use and easy on the eyes. Ideal for retrofit or new construction. JELD-WEN’s Northern Tri-Pane Collection windows provide unparalleled performance for your home
WINNING WINDOW’S
A
by SARA DUCK
re you contemplating an update on your home’s windows this year? You may be surprised to learn that replacing your dated windows is a good investment that offers a strong return on what you spend. Not only will you increase the curb appeal of your home but replacing your windows with energyefficient ones can reduce your energy costs, too. As a trusted brand in the Canadian building products industry, JELDWEN is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of reliable windows and doors. JELD-WEN’S new Northern Tri-Pane Collection boasts some serious performance benefits. Here is a breakdown of what makes these windows stand out from the rest.
Did you know? Tri-pane windows from JELD-WEN are designed with more robust frames for increased durability.
1
SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY The exterior pane insulates the interior panes, which helps reduce home heating and cooling costs.

TRI-PANE versus DUAL PANE Why tri-pane windows outperform
dual pane:
33
per cent more low E coating means superior UV resiliency.
50
per cent more insulated air space means reduced condensation and increased efficiency.
50
per cent more glass-fill significantly increases thermal performance. Every Northern Tri-Pane Collection window is specifically designed with a more robust frame designed to accept a triple-pane insulated glass unit that enhances performance and durability.
2 3 ENHANCED HOME COMFORT
The extra air space between each pane acts as a second layer of insulation. The interior panes reduce radiant heat and condensation, allowing for more cold-weather humidity and eliminating dry, winter air.
EXTERIOR NOISE REDUCTION The interior panes reduce exterior noise and increase interior noise attenuation, creating a quieter, healthier environment.

Linen is a durable natural fibre derived from the flax plant and has been around for more than 6,000 years. (It was used to preserve mummies in Egypt!) This sustainable fibre can wick away moisture, making it an excellent fabric for bedding. Linen is also naturally antibacterial, so it is a great choice for window treatments and accent pillows. In addition, the fabric is synonymous with summer and can give you that outdoor feeling indoors all year long.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS POWDER ROOM RENOVATION? As the last untouched space on our main floor, I wanted this small powder room to go above and beyond. I believe powder rooms are meant to be a little over the top, so I said yes to pink tile, yes to gold accents everywhere, and yes to a space that brings my family joy every time we walk into it.
Lifestyle blogger and designer Candace Alongi of The Minted Mama creates a pretty pink powder room abounding with sparkle and style
FAVOURITE DETAIL? Lighting makes or breaks a space for me. I used a larger version of the chandelier in another room in our home and loved it so much that I also decided to install it here. The matching sconces were an absolute must, and together they added just the right amount of luxe and glamour to the powder room.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE DESIGNING THIS SPACE? Selecting the paint colour! Believe it or not, there are hot pink walls beneath this beautiful grey hue. The lesson learned is to keep ‘wow’ factors to a minimum, especially in a small space. The tile wall delivers such a significant impact on its own, that it doesn’t need anything else to compete with it.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR HOMEOWNERS WHO ARE AFRAID TO USE PINK IN THEIR DESIGN PALETTE?
WHAT ARE THREE KEY ELEMENTS TO DESIGNING A BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL BATHROOM?
Balance out this overtly feminine shade with bold elements that anchor the space and make it welcoming to all. Also, start small if you’re nervous about introducing it on a larger scale. Begin with pieces that don’t feel like a commitment, such as throw cushions, artwork, or a beautiful vase.
1. Step out of your comfort zone and create an eye-catching focal point. 2. Use materials that can stand the test of time (even with repeated use by little ones). 3. Be sure there is plenty of storage to hide all the essentials you don’t want anyone to see!

ho says you must have a large backyard to enjoy the outdoors? Jaclyn Genovese, luxury interior designer and founder of Spaces by Jacflash, re-vamped this small backyard in Yorkville into a luxurious and functional living space. So, how did she do it? Genovese and her team started with their client’s existing dining set and swapped their old red umbrella and seat cushions for

rich, warm grey and charcoal-toned ones to make the setting feel more sophisticated. “We opted for neutral and organic colours to create a peaceful, low maintenance oasis,” says Genovese. Luxury living doesn’t always mean breaking the bank. Her team mixed an inexpensive IKEA rug with a streamlined, luxurious Restoration Hardware sectional, then paired the sectional with textured woven cushions. A cement
fire pit that doubles as a coffee table was placed in the space to create a cosy atmosphere. And, as a final, unique touch, a once empty area of the backyard was filled with a modern, customwood shed installation and Dynasty Toronto enhanced the space with potted plants. Genovese agrees that accessories are the key to bringing any space together. “A rug, cushions and various plants and planters bring life to any

The final result is a sophisticated and stylish retreat that her clients will enjoy for years to come. For more design inspiration from Spaces by Jacflash visit: spacesbyjacflash.com

This kitchen is all about storage, which is a key aspect to any well-designed kitchen. The upper and lower cabinets allow for items to be stowed away discreetly while the glass cabinets offer the ability to showcase practical and personalized items such as longstem glassware and vases.

Free
g n i l e e wh by MARLENE EISNER
Interior designer Cynthia Soda worked with the team at HGTV’s Holmes Family Rescue to fix a previous poorly done reno and turn a house into a beautiful and functional home for a couple and their wheelchair-bound son
A
few years ago, when Iwan and Ivona decided to start a family, they sold their small downtown condo and bought a fixer-upper in the suburbs. They hired a contractor to start some renovations, which were poorly done, but before they could have them fixed, Ivona became pregnant. Three months after their son Noah was born, he was diagnosed with cancer, which left him left unable to use his legs. The earlier renovations had left chipped and broken tiles and uneven floors, which make it difficult for Noah, who is now five, to get around the main floor in his wheelchair.
Challenge #1: The floors OOO The biggest challenge was to provide a seamless experience for Noah in his wheelchair. That meant replacing all the floors. “I wanted a flooring that would suit the whole main level from front to back, for it to be attractive, tough and durable, and be a smooth transition for Noah’s wheelchair,” explains Cynthia Soda, owner and principal designer of Soda Pop Design Inc.. Soda chose Gemtec’s Hardwood Masterpiece white oak DaVinci from Twelve Oaks, an engineered hardwood floor

that is waterproof, child- and pet-friendly, has a durable wood core and comes with a lifetime residential warranty. “It looks and feels like wide-plank solid wood but the core is a dense rubber with a laminated back and a fused veneer
top, so there is no way water can get in,” she says. This is an important detail because the wheels of Noah’s wheelchair are often wet coming inside from out of the rain.
Challenge #2: The kitchen OOO The smallish kitchen needed to be updated and, as mentioned, the tile floor was a mess and a danger for Noah in his wheelchair. A lot of thought was given to choosing materials that were durable to withstand knocks and bangs from the wheelchair, and ensuring the overall design would be barrier-free to allow Noah to participate in kitchen activities. “The client had mentioned to me they would sit Noah on the counter when he wanted to help cook. I thought about what they wanted to do and how to keep him safe, and went with a countertop and Invisacook by Ciot,” explains Soda. “The technology is safe, cold to the touch and takes up no space. It actually looks like there is no cooktop on the counter because the Invisicook is installed underneath the countertop. Plus, the benefit of the induction cooktop is that it doesn’t get hot so he could sit anywhere on the countertop and not get burned if it’s off, plus it saves space.” Other kitchen adjustments included continuing the tile finishes on the back of the island to reach the floor, dropping one end of the counter to desk height so Noah could food prep or do homework, and installing appliances such as a pull-out microwave drawer at an accessible level.
Challenge #3: Noah’s bathroom OOO The main floor bathroom is also the family’s primary bathroom, so the aim was to make it accessible but not look like a hospital setting. Renovated to accommodate Noah’s needs, there were a lot of little details to consider, including working with a critical clearance zone of a five-foot turning radius for the wheelchair, enough room to accommodate the length of the grab bar located at the right of the toilet, and three-feet of clearance to get in and out of the shower. It was those critical clearances that determined the size of the overall space. “Other factors we had to think about was how high the countertop should be, what would be the slope required when Noah washed his hands in the sink, and even a tilted mirror so he could see himself,” says Soda. And since he uses a different wheelchair for when he showers, the roll-in shower was designed with a half wall to hide the wheelchair when not in use. “For this family, not having the equipment visible all the time was thoughtful and considered his needs, but it also didn’t have to be seen all the time.”

cedar hedge Growing and maintaining a
by MARK & BEN CULLEN
One of the most asked gardening questions we get is: Is it OK to trim my cedar hedge now?
C
edars (Thuja) are one of the most versatile evergreens in Canada, with very few areas in the country where you cannot grow at least one variety of cedar.
When can you trim? The truth is , you can trim a cedar hedge almost any time of the year. However, we recommend the spring and autumn.
Most cedar trees will grow relatively consistent throughout the growing season. Spring pruning allows you to shape the plant before it pushes a flush of new growth. From late in the summer until early fall, cedars will

PRUNING TIPS

When pruning, always shape the bottom of the hedge wider than the top. This allows even exposure to sunlight and helps to keep the entire cedar hedge looking thick and healthy. If your hedge has been ignored for several years, you can still bring it under control by removing up to one third of the foliage each year until it looks the way that you want it to, but be prepared for the appearance of bare wood for a couple of years as the plants fill in. A cedar hedge will live for 30 to 60 years depending on the variety and its location.
PLANTING CEDARS

6 push new growth if there is moisture in the ground and the temperatures are not too high.
Is it true that cedars attract mosquitoes?
What kind of cedar makes a good hedge?
No, this is not true. Cedars get this reputation from growing naturally in low/wet land where mosquitoes tend to breed. It is the environment that breeds mosquitoes, not the cedars themselves. What is true, is that cedars are your best bet for a fast growing, evergreen hedge in most parts of the country.
In central and Maritime Canada, the native White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) is the most popular to use as a hedge. It is inexpensive and is often dug from native plantations, almost bare root. It generally doesn’t grow for a year or two as it puts down roots in the soil, but when it does grow, you can expect up to a metre of new growth each year. Expect the first flush of growth in year three. We recommend Brandon cedars for Prairie gardeners and Emerald cedars for the B.C. coast and lower mainland.
Be patient
7
Mark your line with a string or garden hose to get the hedge straight. Dig a trench 1/2-metre wide and 1/3-meter deep. Back-fill the bottom of the trench with triple mix (1/3 topsoil, 1/3 peat and 1/3 compost). Stand your cedars upright in the trench before piling the remainder of the triple mix on their roots. Once the cedars are lined up straight and you have added the remainder of the triple mix, step firmly on the soil as you plant, making contact between the soil and the roots of the new trees. Water thoroughly and stake every two metres with a T-bar or two-inch by twoinch stake, using heavy gauge wire to secure them in place. Most important! Don’t be too ambitious when choosing your new cedars. New trees about one metre high will establish much more quickly than large, two-metre high specimens, unless the large trees have been nursery grown.
Your cedar hedge will grow and mature into a thing of beauty as time passes, and you attend to the annual trimming (yes, only once a year will do the trick). Plus, you will have an investment that grows in value each year – unlike installing a fence.

outdoor living trends by BILHA KANGETHE

f we had to choose one word to describe outdoor living post-pandemic, it would be “reawakening.” During the last two years, our backyards have shifted from sporadic weekend barbecues, parties and warmweather grilling, to invaluable real estate that can function as an extension of our indoor spaces. In line with that “reawakening,” the production of furniture, decor and accessories has evolved to cater to this expanded functionality. Trends for summer 2022 are focused on all-year-round entertainment, durability, ultracomfort and styles geared to giving a nod to the ultimate backyard getaway, while bringing all our indoor luxuries to our outdoor spaces.
Petaluma LANTERNS. crateandbarrel.ca
LOVE AT FIRST LIGHT Lanterns are our favourite go-to accessory when styling outdoors. Constructed from everything from rattan to ceramic and modern porcelain finishes, lanterns are now available in multiple sizes and silhouettes for all styles. Set the tone to your evenings with these lovely pieces, and watch the sun go down in style and elegance.
GLAM IT UP Accessories and decor are taking centre stage and adding the glam we need to take our entertaining experience to a new level. Mimicking finely crafted ceramics, refined wood-grain patterns, ceramic glazed finishes and joyful pops of colour that are fun to mix and match, melamine dishes and carefully crafted acrylic glassware are serving it up outdoors so we can get excited for all our cocktail parties, and achieve an elevated barbecue experience. Indoor/outdoor area rugs hand-loomed in a polyester fibre are great for durability and infused with fade-resistant properties. Geometric, minimal and neutral, a luxe boho vibe or graphic coastal stripes, they cater to our styling needs.

outside YOUR HUMBLE ABODE
Tips on extending your time outdoors during the best time of the year
S
o much time is spent making sure the interiors of our homes are comfortable for both ourselves and our guests, oftentimes too little attention is spent (in Canada) on detailing our outdoor spaces. Surely it is a reflection of the short season, where we struggle with either a chill, intense heat, bugs, rain or wind. Planning parties or even simple gatherings in the yard can be stressful when so much is out of our control. In a recent project, the team at Eurodale designed a space for daily enjoyment and regular entertaining, all with a focus on solving some of the challenges we all may face in our yards. Here are some key takeaways to consider when planning and designing an outdoor oasis to help ensure you maximize the enjoyment of your time beyond the walls of your humble abode.
Pathways Think of the typical high-traffic zones, pathways and spaces you may need for daily use and less frequent access. Guests with mobility aids or in high heels will appreciate a well-constructed and level pathway. Permeable concrete pavers add visual interest over poured-inplace concrete and are more environmentally sensitive due to drainage. Frost and weed growth can affect the joints, so they are not totally maintenance-free. We used large-format pavers that reduce joints in patio areas, and 52
RENO + DECOR |
JUNE/JULY 2022
then added purposefully large joints for visual interest and ease of care in walkways. Gate sizes at 36 inches or wider allows for easier traffic flow for guests and for care and maintenance equipment to pass as required.
Sun and rain Occasional cover from excessive direct sun and rain can be critical in the creation of any outdoor space. When outside, a view to the sky is
always nice, but the ability to quickly shelter from discomfort when the temperature ramps up or a sudden rainshower comes down ensures you are not forced to run back inside. A variety of awnings, pergolas, shades and modular shelters can help. If you are planning to leave them outside, be sure to think about their ability to withstand harsh conditions, including windstorms, as you don’t want anything to end up flying into your neighbours’ yards during a storm.
Furniture Again, weather durability and weighting are key factors, along with comfort. Cushions in Sunbrella’s weatherproof fabric is an absolute recommendation. Will furniture be moved or fixed? Will it remain outdoors or be stored inside when not in use? Is sitting
or lying the preferred lounging position? At this site we created zones around the yard, including a more formal dining area, a casual sitting spot by the barbecue, a lounging area in the rear and a seated firepit space for an afterdinner cocktail.
Trees and plants Nature’s protection from the elements can provide shade, privacy and soften the feel of any yard. Trees grow in different shapes and different conditions, and can also be a nuisance with pollen, fruit, nuts and by way of some of the creatures that live in them. Do your research and think of the placement, soil type, specific need and annual lifecycle of what you are planting. Native species are always recommended. Plants have different light and water needs, too, and while some require little maintenance, others require constant care. Be realistic about the “colour” of your thumb; don’t merely select trees and plants based on their visual esthetics.
The last word
Lighting When the sun goes down, the good times need not cease. Pathway lighting, ambient space lighting or darkness should all be considered for safety but also for setting the mood. If star-gazing is a pastime, light pollution will hamper that, so having smart-lighting controls on
your phone can come in handy. Downlighting or a “Solar Eye” path puck with a “bat hat” reduces up to 98 per cent of upward light spillage that can also impact nocturnal animals. Bats eat mosquitoes, so being kind to them is the right move, and also helps keep the stars in sight.
Plan and design your outdoor space for the existing site, take stock of the existing features you love, and work to fix the ones you don’t. Outdoor spaces can be for any passion or occasion, so the best thing is to prioritize your wishes and work toward improving the space to fit your needs. Whether it’s gardening, relaxing, swimming or dining, be it solo or with friends, a well thought-out space will bring you years of pleasure as long as you think of the space in all weather conditions. When planning your own addition, renovation or custom home project, be sure to start your search at renomark.ca, the home of the professional.

fter a two-year hiatus due to the global pandemic, the National Home Show was finally back at the Enercare Centre from April 15 to 24 to welcome the public into the wonderful world of home decor and design. RENO+DECOR was there, too, with one of the show’s most popular features, the Design Intervention booth. Our friends from the design community were on hand and offered free 15-minute consultations to guests at the show. This year’s booth was designed by Diana Rose, from Diana Rose Architectural & Interior Designs. Rose created a visually appealing and imaginative booth space that highlighted the thought process behind a designer’s work. She created one section that represented the “sketch” phase of a design and a second section that transitioned into the finished product. The booth design wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our sponsors and volunteers, all the visitors to the show and of course, our loyal readers, so a huge thank you to all.

Make the fleeting summer season as stress-free as possible with a home that inspires
Easy cottage

t’s summertime and the livin’ is easy – or so they say. But the laid-back life is not always attainable if you’re busy worrying about dirty dog paws on the sofa and sticky juice spills staining the carpet in your home or summer getaway. Here are a few of my favourite ways to make life and home a little less stressed and more easy-going — by design.
Bring the outdoors in When tasked with creating a “cottage-chic” space, I often lean into an organic palette of colours and materials that are evocative of the outdoor environment. A simple coat

of paint can go a long way. When designing cottages — whether actual or homes inspired by a country vibe — I often bring in organic material choices with a natureinspired colour palette. Whites, off-whites and soft creams are the perfect base for a relaxed, rustic style that’s so popular. Natural wood is a great way to invite nature in. It goes with every colour, finish and style on the decor spectrum, and it withstands wear and tear with grace. Hardwood floors just need a sweep and occasional polish, and I’d argue that a well-made piece of wood furniture only gets more beautiful with age. Also consider wood-panelled walls or ceiling, which have a cozy and authentic look. Modernize your panelling by painting some of it white, with the natural wood elements acting as the accent.
Make it low maintenance Always remember the main objective of the great escape to the cottage is relaxation. To that end, be mindful of the level of maintenance required for upkeep. This applies to every decorating decision ahead, from building materials and fabrics to finishes. Are they easy to clean? Do they require regular upkeep? Are they durable? Oftentimes, the most durable of materials also require the least amount of upkeep. Granite and soapstone are classic great options for kitchen countertops. As if hardwood floors needed any more touting, you can add low-maintenance to the list. Perfect for cottage living, hardwood floors bring textural interest and warmth underfoot and pairs with a natural jute rug, a natural fibre that is durable, easy to clean, and in line with a casual, cottage esthetic. Low-maintenance upholstery is another of those essential items you’ll wonder how you ever got along without. This is particularly the case if you have kids and pets. Removable, washable slipcovers can extend the life of your furniture. Outdoor fabric is also a great choice indoors for those who are mindful of maintenance. But not all outdoor fabric is suitable for indoor applications, as it can be bulky, stiff and too structured. But thanks to advances in materials and manufacturing, there are now many outdoor fabrics available in velvet, chenille, jacquard, relaxed twill textures and even sheers. Outdoor fabrics are ideal for use on kitchen stools, sofas, armchairs and headboards. These fabrics are stain-repellent, fade-resistant and impervious to mildew. Also consider your floor coverings from a maintenance perspective. While rugs are a great way to add warmth, colour and texture to a home, there are some materials to avoid. Steer clear of sisal, which stains and can’t be cleaned. Viscose is also impractical, as it stains when wet – even water leaves a mark. Stick to wool, wool blends, cotton, cotton-blends and treated synthetics that are stain-resistant by design. In my opinion, the best low-maintenance rug options are indoor/outdoor
synthetic rugs that can be hosed down, cleaned with simple dish soap and water, and they don’t fade or show wear and tear. To top it off, they are available at much lower prices. Materials and manufacturing methods have come a long way, and these rugs are primarily made from polypropolene but stylistically imitate wool, cotton and sisal. Perfect for dining areas and ideal in entry foyers and hallways, mudrooms and even in kids’ bedrooms.
Keep it casual Nothing says “relaxed cottage” like an open-concept floorplan, which is naturally conducive to mixing, mingling, storytelling and laughing as day turns into night. For the ultimate in function, furnish your open spaces with modular, movable and multi-purpose pieces that offer a variety of layout options and uses. This type of furniture set-up also allows you to alter the arrangement as head counts of residents and guests increase or decrease.
Comfort first Whether you’re decorating a cottage home on a lake, in the forest, as a getaway or for the everyday, make it a restful retreat that puts comfort first, with practicality and style not far behind. And don’t forget to incorporate some places to enjoy a little “you” time, too.

Make the most of every space in your kitchen while retaining your personal style and meeting your needs
A
s a designer, there are two renovation requests that I get time and time again. The first is betterfunctioning storage systems, and the second is custom elements. When you combine the two, the result is pure magic. While you might think that custom cabinets are not particularly exciting, don’t be fooled! The effects of a well-planned, efficient and clean kitchen will make your heart skip a beat. Although some types of custom cabinetry may seem like a big ask in small spaces, the request is quickly gaining traction in homes of every size. The trend is all about making the
most of every inch in your home – especially in the kitchen – and doing it in a way that speaks to your unique style sensibilities. But before making a big investment in custom cabinets, you need to determine how your space will be used. Some areas of the home are made expressly for storage. In the kitchen, stuff rules the realm and it’s okay to adopt a more utilitarian design. In these spaces, function almost always comes first, but that doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice design. Other rooms, such as the bathroom and laundry room, are primarily used as living/ working spaces with storage playing a
supporting role. This is where fashion needs to be given a little extra love. Custom cabinetry can help you make the most of your home. When planning your storage system, think fashion and function right off the bat. After all, that is one of the benefits of creating custom versus buying a ready-made product off the shelf. You get what you really want. Custom elements for the home will cost more, but when done properly, your custom cabinets will pay off tenfold. Here are some of my favourite trends in custom cabinetry that will take your storage system from “just practical” to “just... wow.”

Custom dimensions Okay, extra-high cabinets aren’t exactly a new trend, but there’s certainly renewed interest in efficiently using every available inch of your home. This includes the wall space right up to the ceiling in the kitchen, or custom corner cabinets that tuck infrequently used or seasonal items out of the way, yet remain easily at hand.
Open and closed shelving This will allow you to tailor your storage system and esthetic to your personal storage style. What do I mean? Some people naturally tend to be messy and could benefit more from cabinets with doors that conceal the clutter. Meanwhile, a collector may appreciate open shelving to display his or her favourite dinner sets and crystal.
Custom colour
“Smart” smart storage
Who wants to live in a cookie-cutter home? The great news is, with all the custom finishes and colour options available on the market today, you don’t have to. Your custom cabinets can be a reflection of your individual style. But here’s a word to the wise: Choose carefully! Since custom cabinets can be pricey, this is not an item you’ll want to replace any time soon.
No conversation about home design would be complete without the obligatory tech topic, and custom cabinetry is no different. A hot trend is to incorporate charging and docking stations into your cabinetry to eliminate countertop clutter in the form of phones, tablets, laptops, cables and cords. Beyond the kitchen, think wireless devices built right in, such as speakers or a television! renoanddecor.com

Awards recognize excellence in renovation and custom homebuilding

by DAVE WILKES
very year, I look forward to BILD’s Renovation and Custom Home Awards, which recognize our RenoMark members for their quality of work, innovation, customer service and industry leadership. This year’s awards were particularly memorable, because after a two-year hiatus, we were able to celebrate in person on April 22 at the National Home Show. For this year’s awards, we received 82 submissions in 23 categories that included Best Overall Renovation, Best Overall Space Renovation, Best Overall Custom Home and the coveted Renovator of the Year award. Submissions were evaluated by 18 industry professionals from across Canada. Golden Bee Homes was named both Renovator of the Year and Custom Home Builder of the Year, for its commitment to customer service, professionalism and quality workmanship, and its ability to establish trust for the renovation industry. Clients spoke highly of Golden Bee Homes. Those who have worked with the custom luxury homebuilder and renovator were impressed with its collaborative approach, open communication and ability to go above and beyond to deliver an outstanding project. Wallzcorp won the awards for Best Overall Custom Home and Best Custom Home $1 million to $2 million. The design-build company also captured the award

For the same project, the company also received awards for Best Basement Renovation over $125,000 and Best Innovative Renovation. Binns Kitchen + Bath Design accepted two awards: Best
Washroom Renovation and Best Overall Space Renovation. Alair Homes was also a two-time winner, capturing Best Custom Home Washroom and Best Custom Home Kitchen, as was MGB Construction Building Group, with an award for Best Condominium Renovation over $200,000 and Best Kitchen Renovation over $100,000.
