The name itself has a certain magical ring to it, and soon the beguiling beauty of the new ravine community of Cambrian will be plain to see. the neighbourhood’s rolling landscape connecting the parks and other amenities.”

The southwest sector of Edmonton can be characterized in a couple of ways – one, as a booming, cosmopolitan mini-city with tons of growth potential, and the other as a nature-connected enclave that offers the peace and tranquility of the quiet countryside.

One of the most remarkable places to shop in Southwest Edmonton is the Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market (SWEFM). Established in 2011, the market is home to over 60 local farmers, bakers and makers. It is open every Wednesday from May 17 to October 4 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre provides the community with exceptional health, wellness and sports amenities. People of all ages and abilities can gather to learn, exercise, relax, meet, and have fun in this community hub.
If you’re a golfer, the southwest may just be the best community as the popular Jagare Ridge Golf Club, River Ridge Golf & Country Club and the Windermere Golf & Country Club are within its borders. But that isn’t the only outdoor activity one can enjoy in the southwest.
There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities around. It
is in fact promoted by many of the land developers here as among the area’s greatest assets. Whitemud Creek runs through the southwest and affords plenty of quiet, idyllic scenery for calm walks, jogging or biking.
Southwest Highland natural area is a very unique natural feature. It is the highest point in Edmonton, with an elevation of 716 m at its southern end and steep slopes on its east and west sides. It offers a beautiful view of Edmonton to the east, west and south, and Whitemud Ravine to the southeast. Given its proximity to both the ravine and the River Valley, the natural area provides an important linking function for wildlife. Its steep slopes support an interesting combination of successional stage and pioneer vegetation communities, including beaked hazelnut and snowberry.

It has been a long hot summer and it’s not over yet, but builders are getting ready for what looks to be a robust fall market as new home sales in Edmonton continue to surge.
All the new communities in Edmonton and region have exciting showhome parades to go through, and Edmonton New Home + Condo Guide is here to “guide” new homebuyers on their picks and here are a few of our favourite new and upcoming showhome parades.
Showhomes are an indispensable tool in the homebuilder’s toolkit. They allow the customers to get a feel for what can be the biggest purchase of their life, at the same time it lets the homebuilder showcase their skills and expertise.
“In many cases, the showhome is a great way to show our customers new models, specifications, upgrades and more,” says Excel Homes Marketing Manager, Kristina Plank. “It is also a way of showing customers our brand and who we are as a builder.”
Showhomes can inspire buyers, says Jennifer Smith, Marketing Manager at Cantiro. “Buyers can get inspired by the design choices, interior styles, and overall aesthetics of the space, helping them envision their dream home,” she says.
“Furthermore, purchasing a home is a significant financial investment. Showhomes provide buyers with the reassurance that their decision is well-informed. They can physically experience the space before committing to a purchase, reducing the uncertainty associated with buying a property.”
The emotional impact of a showhome cannot be discounted either, says Landen Sparrow, Marketing Specialist at Morrison Homes. “A showhome allows the buyers to walk through a preview of their new home – picture themselves living in the spaces. A showhome puts thoughts and ideas into something visual and allows customers to take a test drive of their new home.”
Taabish Zaver, Cantiro’s Interior Design Manager, says making the showhome stand out to buyers is an important strategy for Cantiro. “When buyers are visiting multiple properties, a showhome serves as a benchmark for comparison. They can evaluate other homes based on the standard set by the showhome, making it easier to identify the best option,” she says.

Cantiro has 12 showhomes in the Edmonton area currently, and more are coming in 2024, including three in Cantiro’s newest communities of Riverstead at Keswick in southwest Edmonton, and five and in Alces in the southeast.

The celebration of Excel Homes’ 35th anniversary this year has been very successful, Plank says, and has really helped expand their share in the Edmonton new home market, not just in terms of sales but in name recognition as well.
They are growing their showhome line up and are adding two more this month to the five they currently have in The Orchards, Vita Crystallina, Edgemont, Keswick Landing and Citadel.
“We have two new duplex show homes in The Orchards. (Sales centre: 2371 Chokecherry Close SW), starting from the mid $400,000s that will open on September 9, 2023,” Plank says.

Four prestigious Pinnacle Awards will be awarded to the top-scoring builder in small and large volume along with the top developer and renovator. Points for the Pinnacle Awards are based on the finalist results along with additional points for community service, association parcipation, safety leadership and customer service. Finalists for the Pinnacle Awards will be announced at the award ceremony.
The winners of the BILD Alberta Awards will be announced at a gala event on September 16 at the Beyond the BILD Conference at the Banff Springs Hotel.

Laned homes have been the darling of the new homebuyer set for almost as long as there has been a new homebuilding industry. This type of home usually has a porch or veranda facing the street, or big front windows with unencumbered view of the front yard. It also has a parking pad or detached garage with rear lane access, and it has always been the preferred first home for many.
Traditional designs have typically been utilitarian with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths with an open concept main floor and a basement development option. But lately, there has been a noticeable change in the design.
Over the last decade or so, it was rare to see laned homes larger than 1,500 square-feet in Edmonton. But today, as lifestyle needs of buyers
continue to evolve, laned homes have gotten bigger, offering more living space than ever before, many coming with options for spice kitchens, and main floor bedrooms, and more.
We spoke with a few local homebuilders to explain the laned homes’ continued allure and its new, lifestyle designs.
Tara Van Horn, Director Marketing & Design for Coventry Homes, and Impact Homes says laned homes offer much in terms of curb appeal but changing needs have led to new design innovations.
“Laned homes continue to evolve with the needs of those buying them. Impact Homes now offers laned homes ranging from 1,361 to 2,145 square feet and offers a multitude of
optional layouts to meet the needs of home buyers,” she tells Edmonton New Home + Condo Guide.
She adds that laned homes are often still the more affordable option compared to front attached garage homes, and having the variety of sizes and plans caters to the needs of many home buyers. “The smaller square footage homes are great for first time home buyers while the larger plans are a great option for those wanting to upsize or even downsize from a front attached home.”

Kristina Plank says laned homes remain to be “Goldilocks homes, “because they aren’t too big, or too small, they’re just right. “They have huge curb appeal, suited to a lot of lifestyles, providing lots of great living
space – with the potential for more if you develop the basement,”
Excel Homes offers four models of laned homes in Edmonton currently, ranging from 1,226 to 1,636 squarefeet. They can be found in the communities of Vita Crystallina in the northwest, and Edgemont in the southwest.
“Our top selling laned model in Edmonton is the Sienna – a 1,636-square-foot home with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths,” Plank says.
The Sienna is a bright, open, and fully loaded laned home designed with families in mind. The main floor offers flexibility and a great place to entertain with a central kitchen and plenty of seating in the great room. A main floor flex room provides the
perfect space for a home office, or it can be turned into an extra bedroom. The second floor has an inviting bonus room and laundry, which separates the additional bedrooms from the spacious master suite. An optional developed basement can accommodate a full legal suite, or simply more room for fun and games with the family! It starts from the high $400,000s.
“The Sienna laned show home in Vita Crystallina is very popular among younger families and growing families. It offers a ton of flexibility and affordability,” she adds.
She also says that, despite the rising interest rates, today might still be the right time to buy. “Interest rates aren’t the only thing rising; building supplies and labour costs also continue to increase. The advantage of buying now is price protection – you lock
in your price, and you are safe from future cost increases.”

Though laned homes are typically pricier than multifamily homes, buyers understand the value that the additional space and privacy adds and feel the cost is worth the investment,” she adds.
