SMART THERMOSTATS GLORIFIED NECESSITY OR EFFICIENT? Anyone who has stepped outside at least once in the last three months will tell you, the polar vortex had Canada and much of the Midwest of the U.S. in the midst of a deep freeze. No surprise then that most homeowners are combating the frost with the help of their thermostats.

If you’re looking for a new home, you’re in luck: Many come with some sort of smart thermostat, or the wiring to put one in. Almost all have a schedule system that gives homeowners control over how they heat their home, from inside or remotely with a smart phone. Is it worth getting a smart thermostat?

My partner and I moved into our new build last November.

The installation of our preferred thermostat was seamless enough. Within 20 minutes, we had the app and thermostat installed. The heat was on and circulating; however, it never seemed to stop. I awoke in the early morning hours perspiring heavily. Winter’s blustery wrath whistled outside, reminding me what season it was. According to the app, it was 27 degrees inside. Like author Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’, this thing was trying to kill us. My partner disabled the system, but by 5:15, the heat was still kicking, and we saw 30 degrees. At 5:30, we turned the furnace off from the fuse box and took the thing out of the wall.

We quickly learned the problem had nothing to do with the shortcomings of the product - but a classic case of lazy wiring from the HVAC contractor.

Now that we’ve got a handle on this thermostat, we’re appreciating the control we have in observing our energy consumption, the simplicity of adjusting the thermostat from inside or away from our home, and the overall cost savings.

Was it worth it? You bet.

1 | Pop Bottles and Plastic Spoons: Lots of today’s modern lighting is made out of PVC plastic. This is a bit more fragile, but a very cool pendant fixture for sure. Be sure to use a low-wattage LED bulb so you don’t melt your lamp shade.

2 | Plastic Coat Hangars: Need privacy at work or at home? Made out of plastic coat hangars and hot glue, this is the perfect solution.

You can generally purchase a pack of 50 for $10, depending on where you are.

3 | Bicycle Wheel: For the cycling enthusiast, how perfect is this? You may have to make your own clock arms, but this really is a unique idea.

4 | Clear Light Bulbs: With LED bulbs becoming more popular, these clear bulbs will soon be a vintage item. What a great way to reuse them, and my favourite pick.

5 | Wine Bottles: Create a beautiful chandelier with used bottles. Keep them all one colour of glass, or mix them up like you see here. It takes a bit of work to drill through the glass and find small enough bulbs to fit, but what a great idea.

6 | Wrench: These are perfect for the garage, or an industrial loft space. I’ve often wanted something like this and could never find it – goes to show you it’s always better to think outside the box and use what you have around you.

7 | Old CD Holder: Wow, I bet this happened when the inventor ran out of sandwich bags. Still, it’s a perfect solution for the bagel lover.
