But oh the joy when you finally get the keys in your hand, never mind the thrill of walking through the front door for the first time. There are so many options available right now, from master-planned communities that incorporate retail, condo apartments and townhomes, to singlefamily homes located in the suburbs, near the water and close to nature. When you come down to it, however, there are basically three styles of home to choose from: A townhome, a condo suite or a detached home. The one you decide to make your own depends upon many factors, including budget and location. But what about your personality and lifestyle? Single professionals, couples, downsizers and growing families all have different home needs. From the size and floorplan of a condo, townhome or single-family home, to the amenities and services located nearby, these details will determine your new-home personality. SEPT. 21 TREE SALE

URBAN FORESTRY: On Saturday, Sept. 21, people came from all over Vancouver to pick up $10 trees from the Hillcrest Community Centre. This popular initiative of the Vancouver Parks Board project includes 21 fruit, flowering and evergreen varieties of every shape and size, suitable for small balconies to large yards. A total of 1,500 trees were available for this sale, which happens in the fall and again in the spring.

Burgevin Blachman’s Westbank “Unwritten” exhibition The latest residential offering at Oakridge is a 17-storey tower featuring interiors designed by Clémande Burgevin Blachman. The first Westbank homes to come fully furnished, the furniture and accessories are curated by the designer, who has an effortless style garnered from her childhood spent travelling through flea markets and antiques shops from Paris to Ibiza. Cyrus Hill’s newest show home There was a bustling crowd beyond the glass doors of the Presentation Centre and newest show home at Cyrus Hill, a 40-townhome community in the heart of Delta. Visitors stopped to enjoy a healthy wrap, sandwich or fresh-pressed juice before going on to discover why these homes have been attracting so much attention. The spacious, elegant layouts range in

size from 1,426 to 2,342 sq. ft .and are priced from the mid- to high$600,000s. The four-bedroom plans feel very house-like, with double garages, walk-in pantries, side-by-side laundries, double sinks and full closet organizers. Conveniently located near schools, transportation and shopping, these homes will be ready for occupancy in early 2020.

South Village townhome community in South Surrey “Modern Farmhouse” is the design of the South Village townhome community in South Surrey, and this distinctive style permeates all aspects of these beautiful homes, conveniently close to shopping, restaurants and the services at Morgan Crossing. A huge turnout arrived to view two new different layouts of these spacious homes, and learned about this burgeoning community

while noshing on Japadogs and sipping Starbucks coffee. Built by Red Construction, with interior design by Beyond Beige, these show homes impressed all the visitors with its craftsmanship and livability. Construction is underway. The building has been turning heads sky-ward since midway through construction when the iconic floating pool that connects the two towers was installed. As part of what is currently the most expensive amenity space per-sq.ft. in the country, Concord Pacific opened the building, pre-occupancy, to the public on Saturday Sept. 14, where owners, potential buyers and media could experience the homes and the spectacular amenity space. The glass-bottomed pool looking down over traffic and the city below is a small part of the soaring, two-level common space that also includes a piano lounge, dramatic spiral staircase, kitchen, bar and very elegant lounge area. The building is mostly sold out, but the developers have held back a few suites for sale upon building completion. I’ll still be able to garden, George will have space for his studio, and there’s even a doggy wash downstairs for our little guy. Both Coquitlam and Burnaby have seen incredible growth over the decades, with pockets in each city transforming into robust new communities. Burquitlam, also known as West Coquitlam, is one of these new neighbourhoods, and has been on the rise since the Lougheed Highway first paved through the land over 60 years ago. With the opening of the SkyTrain’s Evergreen extension in 2016, Burquitlam’s ascent became even more significant and spurred the city of Coquitlam to renew the course for the area defined as Burquitlam-Lougheed. After a widespread public outreach program, the BurquitlamLougheed Neighbourhood Plan (BLNP) was revealed in 2017. Its 20- to 25-year vision focuses on creating walkable, transitoriented neighbourhoods, with a diverse mixture of housing, access to shopping and amenities, and an abundance of park and public spaces. Typical for transit hubs, Burquitlam Station is driving high-density growth, with multiple mixed-use or purely residential towers proposed or now under construction. Fanning out from the stations, townhomes and low- and mid-rise buildings provide additional choices for homeowners in all stages of life. There’s a definite art to bringing a burst of colour into a home’s neutral palette. One of the most common hurdles we face in our profession as interior designers is fear of colour. Honestly, we’ve heard it all: “It’s too bold; it’s too trendy; it’s too... colourful.” To all those excuses, we say, ‘You’re not afraid of colour; you’re just scared of the wrong colour!’ With that being said, here are some tried-and-true designer tips for choosing the perfect tone and shade, and how to incorporate it into your interiors to make your neutral rooms pop. So, where do you start? Colour has been proven to have psychological effects on people. As you dive into the pool of paint swatches, think about how your top colour choices make you feel, and how you want to feel in your space. The same room can have a completely changed ambience in a new hue. For example, cool colours such as blues and greens draw out feelings of tranquility, reliability and calmness. On the other hand, colours on the warm side of the spectrum tend to act like stimulants. Reds, oranges and 62  New Home + Condo Guide  |   Oct. 5–19, 2019

yellows are known to elicit feelings of excitement, warmth and playfulness. Consider this when making your colour choices. Keep in mind that colour resonates with different people in different ways. The short answer to the colour quandary is this: It’s all about personal preference. If you love it, then it’s right. In this small but sweet urban space, we played with a combination of colours to bring out the homeowners’ sense of youth and modern fun. High ceilings, huge windows and neutral walls play perfectly with the complementary palette of warm greys peppered with pops of coral, blue and green – and a vibrant sunny yellow taking the spotlight. To create a sense of continuity through the home, we used the same sunny shade of yellow in every room, albeit in small doses. It instantly draws attention and lends a wonderfully warm hint of sunshine to the otherwise cool and contemporary backdrop. The cosy living room enjoys some yellow sofa cushions and some subtle, strategically placed, sunny accessories tucked away on the

bookshelf. As you move through the kitchen, a yellow tea kettle perched on the countertop is just enough to catch the eye as you pass through. In the bedroom, we echoed the same shade in some pillows and a playful pillowcase that picks up pops of yellow. A modest sitting area is inviting and instantly alluring, though you may not immediately know why. (Hint: it’s definitely the yellow!) We even carried our colour theme into the great outdoors, onto the balcony barbecue area, where a couple of yellow cushions invite sunny thoughts, even on cloudy days. It’s easy to introduce colour into a neutral space, despite common fears. Play around with different hues before you commit and remember, colour is subjective. You make the rules!
