ou’ve decided now is the time to rent a new space. Now you have another decision to make – choosing your property management company.

How can you check the reputation of the company or landlord you’re considering renting from? First, find out how long the company has been in business by asking the staff or visiting the company’s website. Most property management companies have well-established business practices in place to ensure that the customer comes first . If possible, drive around existing communities managed by the company you’re considering and speak to some of the renters in the building. Many property management companies will be able to put you in touch with people who would be happy to provide a testimonial.

Get a feel for each company and the staff. You should be comfortable and courteous asking questions and in turn you should be treated with respect.

Think twice about any property management company that doesn’t willingly provide any information you respectfully request.

Putting the customer first and offering the best quality rental space for your money is the company’s ultimate goal. Once you find the perfect space, don’t hesitate in going for it and making it your own!

Moving can be stressful for children.

The change can be overwhelming, but there are ways to make it easier on them.

moving It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more time they have to prepare, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists who suggest that children should participate in the decision-making.

If kids feel included and take ownership of their new-home decision, the transition will go much easier.

Moving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family.

Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating their moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff.

Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings.

Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move.

Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings.

Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time.

Sentimental items your children treasure such as special blankets, beloved stuffed animals and photo albums should be kept in a separate bag or box which they can keep close until moving day, and then bring with them to your new home.

Plan a date to tour your new neighbourhood with your family. If it’s not a long distance, why not ride your bikes and scope out your children’s favourite activities and even fast food locations, new neighbourhood tennis courts, soccer clubs, baseball associations.

here are numerous reasons why one would need furnished accommodations, especially short term. Many lifestyles and jobs require temporary relocation, and the labour and expense of setting up shop and moving at great frequency just doesn’t make sense. Sometimes it’s a result of a change in marital status, while many new immigrants TheRentersGuide.ca find it prudent to take short-term accommodations until they TheRentersGuide.ca acclimatize to the city, and would rather take something short term while looking for the perfect permanent new home.

renters’help Though similar in accommodation, price is the biggest difference between a furnished apartment and a hotel.

Another major difference is that hotel rooms do not have full kitchens and laundry facilities. Depending on the length of your stay, not having a kitchen could be a major inconvenience that would likely add considerable expense to your food budget.

In addition, some furnished apartments have special amenities such as housekeeping, concierge services, onpremises spa, underground parking, conference and meeting rooms and fitness facilities.

Furnished apartments can be found in various types of buildings – from a condominium hotel to a luxury apartment building that also contains tenants on regular leases. Several of the larger landlords have furnished suites available in some of their buildings.

Depending on the owner/landlord or company you are renting from, the unit can be rented on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. It’s best to discuss the terms of your“lease”or short-term rental agreement with the lessor before you move in. While a lease is not required when renting for less than one year, it’s best to have one. That way the terms and needs of both parties are clear TheRentersGuide.ca and understood. It can ultimately save everyone from miscommunication and aggravation. Because short term needs are

different than in long term tenancies, it’s best to have everyone’s expectations laid out from the start.

With a furnished rental you should expect all utilities – including electricity, heat, water, telephone and cable TV – to be included. Most providers also include Internet. The kitchen should have all the basic tools to prepare meals, from dishware and cookware to appliances.

If your needs are temporary or you have a specific and finite time period to rent, you may even be able to find a sublet, in which case you’d take over a permanent resident’s apartment for the stated duration, use their belongings and then return the space to them at the end of the agreed-upon period. People often leave for short durations, whether for school or travel, to do an out-of-town residency or other personal reasons, and don’t want to give up their apartment but would rather not pay full rent for an empty apartment, especially if they’re also going to be paying for lodgings in their temporary location. Likewise, if you’ve got to leave your home for a short period, you could consider subletting it instead of giving up your apartment and packing it all up.

While the selection of furnished apartments will never be as choice as regular, unfurnished long-term apartments, and you may find the same apartment costs a little more to rent short term than it would on a lease, there’s sure to be something to fulfill your needs.

The bathroom should include towels, an ironing board, and hopefully at least a complimentary bar of soap and roll of toilet paper. The bedroom should include a bed, bedding and furniture. Standard furniture throughout the unit should include a couch, desk, table for eating, chairs, TV and phone. There may also be in-suite laundry.

The dirty truth: cleaning isn’t disinfecting

T

he kitchen looks sparkling clean after you’ve wiped down the counter, wiped off fingerprints from the fridge door and washed the sink.

However, did you know that although a surface may look clean it could be harbouring bacteria or viruses that could be harmful to your health?

When you clean your home, rather than disinfect it, you may just be spreading those germs around. In fact, the Hygiene Council’s 2010 Hygiene Home Truths Study sponsored by Lysol found that 12 per cent of sites that actually appeared to be in a new or visibly clean condition still harbored microorganisms.

“Visibly clean doesn’t necessarily mean disinfected,” says Dr. Donald Low, Microbiologist-in-Chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.“Cleaning with a dirty cloth or using the wrong cleaning product could simply spread bacteria around the home rather than destroy it. Bacteria, fungi and viruses can survive on surfaces for extended periods of time, from hours to days, so you need to use disinfectants to remove them.”

Disinfectants are specifically registered with Health Canada and carry a Drug Identification Number (DIN) on the label. Check the label for the “DIN” to ensure you’re buying a disinfectant. Disinfectants, such as Lysol, can work to eliminate the likelihood of cross-contamination and can help maintain a clean, healthy environment for the whole family. NC

Preparation: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a bowl, combine cheese, peanuts and cayenne pepper.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the puff pastry into a 12-inch (30-cm) square. Trim to size if needed. Brush egg all over surface. Sprinkle half of the cheese and peanut mixture over lower half of square, leaving about 1/2-inch (1-cm) border on three sides. Fold top half of pastry over bottom half, pinching edges firmly to seal. Using rolling pin, lightly roll over pastry to seal layers together. Brush with egg.

Using a sharp knife, cut rectangle vertically into 1/2-inch (1cm) thick strips, each 6 inches (15 cm) long. Twist each strip several times and place in a single layer on prepared pan.

Repeat with remaining pastry and cheese mixture. Bake in centre of preheated oven, rotating pans halfway through, until straws are puffed and golden, 15 to 18 minutes. Once made, straws can be kept in an airtight container for a couple of days or frozen for a month. NC

1. INSIDE OUT The main design concept about “summer-izing” your space is to bring the indoors out. Start by choosing items from inside your home that make you feel comfortable, such as a woven rug or a beautiful vase. By doing this, you will add some luxury and relaxation to your outdoor “dream” space.

2. DARK FURNITURE Save the bright plastic furniture for the beach or cottage dock. Select furniture with rich dark earth tones that you would normally have in your living room. Brown, grey, or wood furniture will ground the space, making the furniture feel substantial and permanent. If you have a wooden kitchen table and chairs hiden away, consider using them as your outdoor dining set. You can protect your furniture from the elements by using a heavy duty cover or tarp.

3. COTTON FABRICS Look for fabrics and cushions that are pleasant to sit on, like cottons or linens. They need to be as comfortable as your indoor fabrics, in fact even more so. There is nothing worse than sitting on prickly or sticky fabric when wearing shorts or skirts. Good quality outdoor fabrics are now readily available. They look like indoor fabrics but won’t fade, and will dry quickly after a rain shower.

4. FRAME YOUR SPACE WITH A RUG Nothing says luxury like a seamless barefoot transition when walking from inside to outside. Throw an indoor carpet on the ground. A rug will frame the space and define it as an outdoor room. This Persian wool rug (pictured left) bought at a flea market, is easy to roll up and bring inside at the end of an evening.

5. MAKE YOUR SPACE PRIVATE Sometimes the luxury of an outdoor space is about being outside incognito – without the whole neighborhood seeing you. Draped fabric or outdoor curtains that can be drawn will give the sense of privacy and can help create the ultimate outdoor room. Use lengths of uncut fabric to make an awning. It is a wonderful way to keep off the mid-day sun, and it creates the illusion of a romantic ceiling waving in the breeze. If you don’t have a divider, create fabric walls as a solution for lack of privacy. I used a waxed marine cotton fabric that can be left outside all season.

6. ACCESSORIZE The saying is true, it really is all in the details. Have fun and accessorize your outdoor space. A great place for a fun workout

wimming pools are ideal for exercising, improving joint and muscle flexibility, improving cardio-respiratory performance and increasing strength and endurance. What makes aquatic exercise so beneficial to our bodies is that it is low impact; the water cushions the impact of our movements, so there is less stress on bones and joints than jogging or even walking. If your apartment has a pool, it’s the perfect way to get some exercise into your life!

Like any exercise routine, an aquatic workout should begin with a short warm-up period with stretching exercises to make your muscles more flexible. It should be followed by a five minute ‘cool down’ or resting period to allow your muscles to relax and heart rate to return to normal.

There are a variety of workouts you can do in the water – depending on what part of your body you want to exercise. For back and abdominal muscles, walking across the pool in waist-deep water helps tone muscles.

To tone the hips, face the pool wall and stand with your legs together, two feet away from the wall with your arms stretched out touching the rim. Move one outstretched leg behind you as high as possible and then repeat with the other leg.

As little as 30 minutes a day, three days a week will make a dramatic improvement in your level of physical fitness and outlook on life.
