Rental living really can make car ownership an unnecessary expense.

No, it’s not that some buildings come with a car included – well not exactly. In many cities in Canada there are one, two and even three carshare programs available. With cars at-the-ready in high usage areas, they’re a perfect option for those occasional drivers. Some property management companies are even starting to offer ride-share on site.

While that may work for non-commuters, those that need to travel a distance beyond a reasonable walk or bike ride start to be hard-pressed to part with their cars. Why not move closer to work or rent on a convenient transit line? Apartments are readily found on the major routes. Whether it’s a train, tram, subway, LRT or bus in your community, moving to a transit pass can save on gas, parking, insurance and car payments – and if you add just a portion of those saving to your rental budget you could be living better and wasting less time in traffic. That time you save is priceless.

Have you ever considered carpooling? If you’re living in an apartment building, chances are you’ll be able to find someone to commute with.

ow may not be the right time to give your home the top-to-bottom makeover of your dreams.

But there are many smaller things you can do, especially in kitchens and bathrooms that will make a big difference for a small investment.

A change of colour on walls, for example. One trend at the moment is a new neutral – green.

Avoid extreme tones, and you’ll find that green works well with other colours, and certainly gives a fresh look to your home.

Then you can add a stylish trolley cart or shelving to your bathroom. There are many to choose from in an abundance of styles and sizes. Extra storage space will tidy up bathroom clutter, and will start you thinking about another way to bring style and glamour into your home – decorative hardware.

HE SHORT ANSWER IS YES. THERE ARE A

FEW REALLY GOOD REASONS FOR HAVING TENANT INSURANCE.

For one, as a tenant you are liable – yes, legally responsible – for any harm you cause to any part of your building and to others who live or visit there. Yikes! If your faulty toaster oven starts a fire that damages not only your apartment, but also the entire complex, you may have to pay out a lot of money.

You could even find yourself in trouble if your party guests get out of hand and cause damage.

Then there are your possessions. You might not think that you have much of real value, but what if you had to replace them all at once, due to fire or water damage?

Replacing your clothing, alone, could run you a few thousand dollars.

And that old couch and bed might not look like much, but buying new ones would be hard on the wallet.

When you consider what it would cost to replace everything, monthly insurance premiums may look pretty good by comparison.

One more thing you might want to think about – talk to your insurance representative about getting an insurance policy that will pay for the full cost to replace what you’ve lost. The alternative is a settlement based on how much your old stuff was actually worth, given that it was old. The depreciated value may not be enough.

A rule of thumb is three months of your income.

I

t’s been a “chicken and egg” question for years: Do wealthy people seek advice, or does advice increase a person’s wealth?

New Canadian research has proven convincingly that having a financial advisor helps people increase their wealth.

People who’ve had a financial advisor for four to six years have more than 1½ times the savings of people that do not have an advisor but are similar in all other ways (such as age, income levels, and education).

The longer people have had advice, the more their levels of savings improve. Those who’ve have had a financial advisor for seven to 14 years have twice the savings of those who are not receiving advice.

After 15 years or more, people with financial advisors have closer to three times the savings of those who do not have advisors – mostly because simply having an advisor encourages people to save regularly and save more.

That leaves one less “chicken and egg” question for us to ponder.

y mom used to make Nanaimo Squares when I was a child. She made other desserts too, but her Nanaimo Squares were the absolute best.

‘Sweet’ doesn’t even begin to describe these delectable little wonders. They start with a crumb base, followed by a layer of light custard buttercream, topped with a smooth glossy layer of semi sweet chocolate. Best of all, you don’t have to bake them.

MOM’S NANAIMO SQUARES INGREDIENTS MIDDLE LAYER

› ½ cup unsalted butter › 3½ tbsp vanilla custard powder › 3 tbsp milk › 2 cups icing sugar ICING LAYER

› 4 squares semi-sweet chocolate (1 oz. each) › 1 tbsp unsalted butter

DIRECTIONS › Cream butter and sugar together, then add beaten egg and mix (or if you don’t like to use raw egg — melt first 3 ingredients in top of double boiler, then add the raw egg, stirring to cook and thicken, then remove from heat). › Continue by stirring in crumbs, coconut, and nuts.

Press firmly into an ungreased 9” x 9” pan. My Mom uses a glass pyrex dish, which I think works better. › Melt chocolate and butter over low heat. Cool.

Once cool, but still liquid, pour over second layer spreading evenly. › Refrigerate until firm. Cut into squares, serve and enjoy.
