Creating curb appeal
W
hat do visitors observe when they pull up in front of your house? Is it dull and uninspiring? Or, much worse, is there significant wear or damage to your home’s exterior, making it appear a bit run down? It is important to address these structural issues first as these are urgent action items that should not be put on hold. This includes the front steps, roof, windows, fascia, soffits, siding and foundation. Make sure to read the practical advice found in Wayne Sage’s column (page 22) on how to address these items. Once these issues have been resolved, it’s time to focus on the decorative elements. There are a number of simple, yet amazing things that can be done to give your home the best curb appeal on the block! A blank patch of grass just isn’t going to get the job done. It is important to introduce some flowers, shrubs and perhaps even trees. The thought of landscaping scares a lot of people. If you are one of them, fear not. Take a few pictures of your yard and arrange to meet someone at a professional garden centre. They will be able to help you pick the right plants and will provide expert advice. Other small purchases that can increase curb appeal include a new address sign or house number, mailbox, light fixtures, door hardware and window boxes. Make your front door the focal point by creating a warm, inviting area. Instead of being dull and run down, your home will be admired for its beauty and character.

SOLUTION:
By stealing some space from the adjacent bedroom closet, we found the space for a tub, shower and larger vanity with storage.

1. The large custom vanity used every available inch for valuable storage. The suspended portion creates the illusion of more space.

2. A ready made mirror adds detail but was easy on the budget. 3. With the vanity being less than standard depth, wall mounted faucets are of course functional but also stylish and beautiful.

4. Subtle cracked glass accent tiles add some interest without being over powering. 5. Robe hooks were used in the small wall space instead of towel bars. 6. The low recessed bottle shelf is functional and keeps the overall shower look clean. 7. The shower floor tile matches the main floor tile to create flow and continuity. 8. Every precious inch was used to create a functional shower and tub area. 9. The existing window was replaced with an operating acrylic glass block window to provide air flow and privacy. 10. (not shown) The toilet was moved to the opposite wall, next to the tub to allow for the best layout of the space. 12 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018

ELEGANT, EFFICIENT AND TIME-SAVING Nu-Life Kitchens delivers the goods by MARGARET ANNE FEHR

A LIBERAL USE OF HONEY OAK FINISHES were all the rage for homes built in the 80’s and 90’s and when Christine and Howie moved into their St. James home built in 1986, they appreciated the abundance of warmth and character. But more than 10 years later, the couple was ready for something completely different, especially in the kitchen where honey oak cabinetry prevailed. Christine briefly considered painting the existing cabinets, but thought twice about the labour involved and the iffy results. Fortunately, Christine’s parents had used Nu-Life Kitchens to revive their own kitchen 10 years ago, and the couple knew that was the way to go. “We were happy with the layout of the kitchen, so re-facing the cabinets was the right choice on so many levels,” says Christine.
A consultation with Sheri and Mark, Nu-Life Kitchens owners, was the first step. “We knew we wanted a somewhat modern and lasting look so after a bit of back and forth between me and Howie, we decided on a grey/brown cabinet colour called Silva. It has a beautiful natural graining with a slight texture that gives a realistic wood appearance.” Mark informs that Silva is a Thermofoil product that looks amazing and is stain and scratch resistant, UV protected against fading or changing colour, does not expand or contract, and is cleaned with just soap and water. The countertops for the island and newly constructed dining room niche are NaturaStone quartz in Constellation colour. “Constellation is a beautiful white countertop with hints of grey and a pop of sparkle,” says Mark. “Custom edge heights were used on the island and the dining nook cabinets. This provides a more sophisticated look with the thicker edge. The white counter on the dark cabinetry provides a dramatic contrast.” The couple relied on Sheri and Mark for other suggestions that added to the kitchen’s maximum potential. “We elongated the kitchen height, drawing the eye upward by framing the kitchen to the ceiling. This also adds extra storage where items not used often can be stored,” says Mark.

A custom built-in cabinet for the dining nook completes the space making it a gorgeous feature for the dining area.
Christine especially appreciated how respectful Mark and Sheri were of their budget.
The microwave was relocated from the pantry to above the stove. “The pantry space where the microwave occupied has been converted into a garage appliance for items including a blender, toaster and coffeemaker to keep the counter clutter free,” says Christine. The re-vamped island is now storage central with soft-closure, fullextension drawers for pots and pans. A custom built-in cabinet for the dining nook completes the space making it a gorgeous feature for the dining area. Improvements to the lighting were accomplished with undercabinet task lighting for kitchen prep and pot lights above the sink and over the window enhance both functionality and ambiance. Christine especially appreciated how respectful Mark and Sheri were of their budget. “They suggested a budget-friendly quartz since we didn’t want to exceed our bottom line with a full-thickness product. The final result is that it looks like the real thing and we can’t tell the difference.” The couple gives kudos to Nu-Life Kitchens’ coordinator, Angie, who 18 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018
“gave us a schedule a few weeks ahead as the arrival time for the trades and what they would be doing each day. Everyone showed up right on time,” adds Christine. The kitchen was renewed within the space of 10 days, eliminating the upheaval that a fullscale renovation would have caused. Christine and Howie were impressed with the experience giving it four thumbs up! The couple is extremely pleased with the quality of the work. “Everyone was very knowledgeable and totally professional from start to finish. We’d recommend Nu-Life Kitchens in a minute.” Call 204-233-1155 for a consultation. For more details, visit www.nulifekitchens.com.

WAYNE SAGE
elieve it or not, spring is finally here which is a great time and relief for all of us in Winnipeg, especially with our Jets now in the playoffs! We have been talking a lot over the winter about kitchens and bathrooms, but as we now move into spring and the outdoor season it’s time to take a look at the exterior of our homes from a maintenance perspective, and just as important, is it time to consider a whole new exterior upgrade. After investing all that money on the inside of your home, nothing could be more important than protecting the exterior and the structural integrity of your home and at the same time upgrade the look and curb appeal. Let’s start at the top and first decide if you need a new roof. Next, doors and windows, and I mention these together for two reasons. After your roof there is no greater potential for damage to your home than around windows and doors, so making sure they are installed, flashed and performing properly is of utmost importance. From an aesthetic perspective, these products can substantially improve the look of your home and the colours, types, orientations, sizes, grids, etc. available out there now are limitless. But remember, everything needs to be tied in
22 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018
together for the best looking finish. So, you may want to consider using a professional Designer to help you with all the choices out there. A little money spent on a Designer can go a long way to ensure your finished look is picture perfect. Now you have to look at the siding on your home and what you can do there. Again, the options available are wide ranging. Do you try and work with what you have or is it time to strip it down and start over, which is something to consider if you also plan on replacing all the windows and doors at this time? If you have an older home, new siding allows the opportunity to clad the entire exterior with rigid insulation which will improve the r-value of your home and tighten up its performance. Stucco, vinyl siding, Hardie Board and longboard are all excellent low maintenance exterior options and all have some very nice looks to them. Years ago I would never have included vinyl siding in this list, but I have to admit, it has come a long way and is now thicker and more impervious to UV ray degrading. When it comes to siding though, I’ve seen people advise clients that in order to keep costs down, just install the new siding overtop of your existing finish. However, the most important thing I can pass onto you regarding siding is, never let anyone talk you into this decision! Make sure all existing finishes are removed prior to applying your new selection. If you don’t, you may be wasting your money because of problems that could develop down the road. Last note on this. Don’t wait too long to make your decisions about upgrading or changing your exterior. Contractor’s phones are ringing off the hook these days with everyone wanting to book this type of work. And with the nice weather coming, homeowners want to have the exterior of their home look and be everything they’ve dreamed of. to partner with home décor and renovations magazine to feature the entrants in its annual RenoMark Renovation Awards. On the following pages, readers will be able to see pictures and descriptions of the projects that have been entered in this years’ showcase. Entries are featured in seven different categories
– Additions, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Exteriors, Whole House, Outdoor Structures and Basement. As one can see from the entrants appearing in this magazine, each project is spectacular. We are featuring 44 different projects by 13 outstanding MHBA RenoMark renovators; renovators who follow the highest professional standards in Canada. These projects will undoubtedly provide you with the direction you need to better pursue your renovation or, at the very least, start you thinking about what you could be doing to upgrade your home. This issue of home décor and renovations is always very popular because readers see what has been done in other houses and then develop ideas of what could be in their home. These are real projects completed by professional renovators in homes in nearby neighbourhoods. These renovation projects can provide a great example of what could and should be done in your own home. Everybody has something that they have been longing to improve in their kitchen. Bathrooms are being updated and modernized for comfort and practicality on a regular basis. Many of us love our neighbourhood and love our house, but we also need change. Colours and styles from
10 years ago just don‘t cut it today. Traffic flow and entertaining guests is encumbered by a bevy of walls and rooms. It’s time to open things up. There’s a reason no one goes down into the basement. Cooking is a chore in a room that stifles creativity and innovation. An addition is like creating a whole new living space; a whole new lifestyle for your family without the hassles associated with moving. If you’re considering a renovation, look to the standards and practices of a professional RenoMark renovator. The Code of Ethics and tips on what to look for when hiring a renovator can be found at the web site www. renomark.ca. The Manitoba Home Builders’ Association website has undergone some major renovations itself, and you can find a great tips, videos and full listing of our renovator members by visiting www. homebuilders.mb.ca and clicking the “Renovating your home?” button. Insist on the quality, professionalism and knowledge that come with a RenoMark renovator; your assurance of quality. Enjoy looking at all of the entrants in this year‘s RenoMark Renovators Awards and, of course, all of the articles featured in the magazine. This client had a garage with a small breezeway that led to the back door of their home. The overhead door was a 90 degree turn from their driveway. It was a poor design, so the clients wanted to utilize the garage for extra living space. We added on to the breezeway to connect the garage to the home. The floor was jackhammered out to allow for proper drainage, as well as new insulated floor joists. Electrical service was upgraded, spray foam and Roxul insulation, new windows installed, new drywall, flooring, and paint. New modern furnishings make this additional space beautiful!
More living space was required for a growing family, and an attached garage was desired. The existing home was in the perfect area, it just wasn’t large enough. Rather than moving, they decided to add on the space they needed. A two-story home addition was added to the rear of the home and included a mud & laundry room and attached two car garage on the main level. The second story of the addition included two bedrooms, a study, hardwood flooring, and a large bathroom with a full walk-in shower, bath tub, dual sinks, and beautifully designed floor and wall tile throughout.
Two additions were built which included a four-season sunroom, new entry, office, master suite, ensuite, and main-floor laundry. The larger addition enhanced the home’s overall curb appeal by incorporating a timberframed canopy and entry with transom. Reclaimed barn-wood was used as a feature in the master bedroom to tie in with the existing structure’s farm-house feel. A lowmaintenance exterior was achieved without sacrificing the overall look-and-feel of the home. New masonry matching the existing was installed, with PVC windows, James Hardie siding, and aluminum cladding.

This 100 + year old character home, believe it or not, still had not had a developed basement! Cold and damp, this glorified storage space beckoned to be transformed from nothing into something. Wanting to keep some of the ‘old’ showing amongst all the ‘new,’ the client’s design called for some creative thinking to make an eclectic mix work together.
This Windsor Park basement had already been developed once before by the previous owner. The homeowner wanted to update the layout to something more conducive to entertaining. We removed the existing partitions walls and reconfigured the layout to include a large entertaining space with flex room on the end. The finished project includes a great TV area, raised bar, serving area. Trendy barn doors add interest to the space.
Creating an open plan basement space suitable for all ages while remedying awkward layout issues challenged our design and build team to implement creative solutions. After re-working the teleposts, awkward forty-five degree angles and numerous bulkheads, the team added a fireplace, dry bar and bedroom and finished the space with durable materials; luxury vinyl plank for the floors, stacked stone around the fireplace, and a beautiful live-edge wood countertop to complete the space. Now the space is one that the whole family can use, with the added benefit of staying on schedule and within budget.

This 1200 square foot basement development went from a neglected unused part of the house to one of the most used and favourite areas in only a few short months. The basement development was done to create an additional living space, office and useful storage areas for the family. They wanted an area to relax and enjoy some downtime together. A sitting/reading area is separated from the main living area to provide a place to get away but still be close by. The fireplace was added to ground the space and hard surface flooring was selected to give it a more modern look.
This 10 year old custom built home now has a custom built basement. Both husband and wife are professionals so making a home based office was a must. They also wanted a space that they could entertain and host parties in, as well as a place to relax with their children. A glass wall with a sliding glass door separates the office from the main living area without hindering the view. A large laundry room with tons of storage and windows to allow in natural light and a beautiful bathroom with a tile shower and guest bedroom were added.
This bathroom had numerous challenges. Neglected since the 1970’s, the moisture damage throughout caused the formation of mold everywhere. We had the mold abated, fully gutted the bathroom, and replaced the subfloor. All of the out-dated plumbing was replaced with new, and we upgraded the electrical. We built a custom storage cabinet behind the door, replaced the window, installed a new acrylic tub and surround with new shower fixtures, and glass sliding doors. We installed a new exhaust fan, vanity, toilet, and sheet vinyl flooring. New clean paint job all around – and we have a beautiful new bathroom!

This bathroom had some upgrading done many years ago, but was tired, and in need of some TLC! We fully gutted the bathroom and upgraded the insulation in the exterior wall. We replaced the exhaust fan with a new, more powerful unit, and installed new moisture resistant drywall on all walls and ceiling. From there, we installed a new acrylic tub and surround and new shower fixtures. We installed a beautiful floating vanity with a matching toilet topper for more storage. We installed new sheet vinyl flooring, new toilet, and built a custom storage cabinet behind the door.
The homeowner wished to update the original ensuite bathroom. The space was reconfigured to allow for the best design. Italian mosaic and wall tile created a stunning effect. The shower had multiple body sprays with independent controls; and his/hers shower heads. There was in-floor heat throughout the room including in the shower stall. The his and hers sinks had LED illumination and 3D LED illuminated mirrors above. The windows surrounding the free-standing oversize tub featured a blackout option on remote control that was imported from Germany, to allow for privacy at the touch of a button.
This client requested a space that could be enjoyed for personal as well as guest use. The design and build team balanced the client’s personal needs and wants, such as quality organization, strong purposeful form, and subtle colour with the basic needs of a guest. Bronze glass, subtle glass mosaic tile, barrier-free shower with a linear drain, quality craftsmanship and attention to detail make this a bathroom that will stand the test of time.

This ensuite bathroom, while spacious, was dark, outdated and lacked style. The completed renovation beautifully complemented the natural light and transformed the space. We brought in modern colours and unique pieces and personalized the room for our clients. Modular vanities were built to give a custom look with a quartz countertop and a linen tower atop to break the space between his and hers undermounted square sinks. Flooring was replaced in a light petrified wood style with in-floor heating through-out. The shower was designed with seamless entry, unique linear drain, built-in niche shelving and tiled through-out.
While the ensuite bathroom in this 60’s home had been recently renovated, the room was cramped and needed an update. Wall to wall marble set the tone in this one of a kind ensuite, including a floating marble shower bench with heated backrest. A crystal clear Starphire shower glass enclosure insures that every inch of this stunning retreat is within view. A tech wood floating vanity with Corion top provides ample storage and prep space for 2, while a large soaker tub and floor mounted tub filler draws the eye, offering the perfect finishing touch.

After making the decision to stay put in their 80’s home, the decision was made to stay and renovate. A lot of the original styles were long outdated, including the front façade. So, a major face lift was called for. The entire front of the house from corner to corner received new finishes. Either fiber cement siding, stone, cellular PVC or cedar was used to give the façade a new refreshed beautiful look. A new front door unit and transom window along with 2 new garage doors, complemented and completed this complete makeover.
Loving the neighborhood and their large property but not loving the typical bungalow look and shape, these clients made the move to radically change the design, form & function of their home. Adding extra square footage out back allowed the new roof shapes and exterior finishes to tie everything together into one cohesive home, with an exciting new look.
The client desired a cost-effective way to increase energy efficiency of their 1920’s bungalow. It was important that we planned this renovation in such a way that the character of the home would be maintained. Roof overhangs were extended. Blueskin VP100 gave an air-tight membrane, providing a dramatic improvement in energy efficiency and indoor air quality. A maintenance-free exterior was constructed, consisting of James Hardie siding, pre-finished aluminum cladding, tri-pane PVC windows, and a fibreglass exterior side door. The existing front door was maintained, being modified on-site to improve the air tightness and energy efficiency.
An unforgettable bathroom design is one of the distinctive components of any home. This existing master bathroom instantly dated the home and we were enthusiastic about the opportunity to showcase some of our favorite styles with some modern adaptions to some older concepts. The use of the timeless penny round tile in this large walk-in shower shows how tile has evolved into a beautiful piece of art. The natural light from the windows and pendant lighting accents the custom walnut vanity and quartz countertop.

This Riverview home received a full deep energy retrofit. Blueskin VP100, a premium weather-resistive barrier ideal for our Winnipeg climate was used. 3” of Roxul comfort board and a rainscreen system was then installed on the outside of the home, followed by James Hardie siding. New energy-efficient windows were installed within the insulation build-out with custom-made jam extensions, allowing for a well-sealed tie-in to the VP100 barrier. Additionally, the closer a window is kept to the interior of a home, the more energy efficient it becomes; this design maximized the overall energy efficiency of this project.
This heritage home in the picturesque Corydon area had long been since converted into two separate dwellings one on the main floor and the other in the second story. The homeowner on the main floor had the desire to create more living space where she could spend time with her grandchildren and closer to nature. She had always wanted a three season sun porch that she could enjoy the outdoors without the inconveniences or limitations of weather and insects. It was imperative that the addition match the existing feel of the historical home. The deck was reinforced to maintain the integrity of the structure. The reno included new windows, James Hardie siding, custom hand railings, cultured stone, LVT plank, and a coffered ceiling on the interior.
This galley style kitchen still had the original cabinets in the home from the 1940’s! The challenges here were that lots of plaster and lathe to be removed. We gutted the kitchen to the studs, and the insulation in the exterior wall was upgraded. Plumbing and electrical were upgraded, and we installed new luxury vinyl tile flooring. New custom “cottage style” cabinetry was installed with a beautiful “earth-tone” granite countertop, and new under-mount sink and faucet. A custom tile backsplash was installed, and new paint job finished off this beautiful kitchen.

After 30 years of deterred maintenance, this galley style kitchen was gutted to the studs, and the insulation in the exterior wall was upgraded. A small closet in the hallway was removed to give the kitchen a little more space. Plumbing and electrical were upgraded, and an old window was replaced. We installed new luxury vinyl tile flooring, and new custom cabinetry was also installed. A sleek, black granite countertop was next, and new undermount sink and faucet. A custom brick-look tile backsplash was installed, and new paint job finished off this beautiful kitchen.
This small kitchen had already been updated from the original 1952 construction, but it was time again for a refresh! The dated melamine cabinets had yellowed and become dull. The layout was no longer current. We worked with the homeowner over several meetings to deliberate the layout options. We decided to place the peninsula on the other side of the room and relocate the stove. We decided on forest green for base cabinets and pantries and soft white for the uppers. Other materials used were vinyl tile flooring, maple countertops, brick backsplash and modern plumbing and light fixtures. The two-toned cabinets really modernize the space.
This Meadows kitchen was completely original. The dark oak cabinets dated the house to 1980’s. We worked with the homeowner over several meetings to deliberate the benefits of working within the existing space or repurposing one small bedroom to create a larger great room space. In the end, simplicity won out and we kept the kitchen within the existing space! We decided on an indigo blue for base cabinets and soft white for the uppers and pantries. Other materials used were vinyl tile flooring, quartz countertops, porcelain tile backsplash and modern plumbing and light fixtures. The two-toned cabinets really modernize the space!

This enviable kitchen boasts quartz waterfall countertops, chevron marble backsplash and custom cabinetry with wood and concrete accents. A grand marble wall greets you at the front entry, followed by a wall of storage in custom millwork and one of the showstoppers, the impressive folding NanaWall. Alair’s thrilled clients made no compromises and now enjoy a stunning home tailored to their lifestyle.
This turn of the century home was in need of some major updating. Making an open concept kitchen/dining room but still keeping the original look and feel of the original house was a must. Moving walls, stairs and doorways were all part of creating this new space. Upgrading the old knob and tube wiring was done throughout. New cabinets and quartz countertops were installed as well as a heated tile floor. A large peninsula was added to create an extra seating/eating area as well as added cabinet space. The transformation from start to finish was remarkable.
The honey oak cabinets with antique hardware is a day of the past. Our clients wanted a fresh modern look for their U-shaped kitchen to better utilize their limited space. We created an inviting and open space by removing the large cupboards between the kitchen and dining area. The laminate countertop was upgraded to a low-maintenance beautiful quartz top. A closet that housed an apartmentsized dishwasher was changed to a full-length pantry providing more storage. The new custom cabinets with textured glass doors, counters and backsplash brightened the space and complementing the natural light coming in from this rural home.

This early 80’s kitchen space was brought to 21st century styling with help from our team. We helped our client create an open concept kitchen design and formal type dining room by removing the partition wall and large closet between the kitchen and dining room. Our custom built-in cabinetry fit into the dated china cabinet niche area which included under cabinet lighting, tiled backsplash and a wine fridge. Our clients who enjoy entertaining and have busy families appreciate the flexible seating we incorporated into the island area. The crisp and clean pendant lighting showcases the beauty of the quartz countertops.
The goal for this breathtaking La Salle kitchen was to create a space where you can cook a meal while entertaining or just gathering with family on a weeknight. No costs were spared with the custom cabinetry. All doors and drawers have soft close hinges, full extension drawer slides along with flip up mix-master and a pull-out pantry. The stunning threedimensional tin stamped ceiling tiles create a statement centerpiece that is eye-catching when walking into the room. The LED under cabinet lighting illuminates the glass upper cabinet doors and showcases the tiled backsplash, granite countertops and chimney exhaust mosaic tile.
This project successfully married modern and mid-century styles to create a bright, airy entertaining space for a busy family. By focusing on function and effective space planning, the project team transformed the space into the hub of the home, fulfilling the client’s request for a unified meeting space as well as continuity between the kitchen, dining, and family spaces and a personalized touch through finishes. Durable countertops, floors and cabinets paired with exceptional appliances and details created a timeless space sure to be utilized for generations to come.

This renovation updated an outdated kitchen to a much more efficient work space with an island. The homeowners wanted to open the space to the dining room and living room removing two dividing walls. We personally designed and built the new cabinets to perfectly fit the space. The handle-less doors are a flat panel door from Elias Woodwork with touch to open hardware. The cabinets include full extension touch to open drawers, multiple pantry cabinets and soft closing door hinges. The countertops are Cambria quartz from FloForm with an under mount sink. The flooring is a click together vinyl flooring.
The client had decided it was time to update her existing home to meet the needs of her family as well as fulling her wish list of having lived in the space for over two decades. By removing the load bearing wall between the previous living room and kitchen it truly opened the space. The load bearing wall was carefully reinforced with a structural flush beam allowing for an open concept and more modern feel. The total renovation included: an expansive custom island, cabinets, granite counters, stainless and glass combo backsplash, refinishing/custom staining of existing hardwoods, installation of luxury vinyl tile, new appliances, and installation of a porcelain tiled fireplace.

This client had a small concrete porch on the front of their home that was built in 1951. The porch was crumbling and was too small for even a single lawn chair. We removed the porch and framed for a new 12 foot x 28 foot deck. The client requested a deck less than 18” off of the ground, so that no railing was required. The deck is built with pressure treated lumber underneath, on concrete pads, with a beautiful grey composite material on top. This deck requires virtually no maintenance and should last the client many years.
This rural bungalow was built in the 1990’s and appeared dark and dated on first look. There were plenty of cabinets but a long wall between the kitchen and living room separated the spaces. The homeowner only wanted to update all the finishes, but in the end decided that removing the wall would have the most impact. The items we worked on were; removal of non-loading bearing wall, new cabinets for kitchen and bathrooms, new countertops, new fireplace wall finish, new ensuite shower, new beamed ceiling, lighting and paint. Removing the separation between the kitchen and living room was key to modernize the space.
Our goal was to create better use of the space, all while staying true to the character of this beautiful home. New hardwood floors were sanded and finished to match the existing floors. The old plywood cabinets were replaced with new, while pealing laminate counter tops made way for stunning granite, complimented by a traditional subway tile backsplash. Staying true to character, a custom oak banquette was designed and constructed, complete with hidden storage underneath. This one of kind piece of furniture creates a beautiful focal point, and is sure to be a conversation piece in this kitchen!

The walls between the dining room, kitchen and living area were all opened up to allow for a much larger kitchen footprint and impressive island. Custom rustic porcelain subway tile was installed enhancing the overall rustic appeal. Pot lights and pendants were added to enhance the look and function. Granite counters make a regal statement with the apron sink. Luxury Vinyl Tile was installed on the floor giving the impression of a porcelain tile but with the warmth of a vinyl.

This Westwood bungalow was almost completely original. The kitchen space had been updated with maple cabinets so we used that as starting point for other finishes. The homeowner wanted to update all the remaining areas of the home. The new finishes included: new hardwood flooring throughout, carpeting in the bedrooms, new main bathroom and ensuite, new gas fireplace and stone wall finish, new built-ins in dining and living room, new maples doors and trim, new lighting and paint. This whole home renovation was complete rejuvenation project on the interior as well as the exterior. This 1980s cab over was updated to today’s standards, incorporating a transitional modern feel. The total renovation included, satin finished ebony stained hardwoods, custom tile, quartz counters, stainless and glass combination backsplash, soft white cabinets, wall paper accents, quartzite stone for the fireplace and brand new appliances.
This 1980 bungalow had an idealistic park view outside but was in need of creating some ambiance inside as well. The homeowner wanted to update and create a space more suitable for a growing family. The renovation was taken down to the barebones, even requiring major structural work and rebuilding the sky light. Additional windows were added, walls removed, reconfiguration of the existing fireplace and replacement of all finishes. The final outcome includes a stunning custom waterfall quartz island, hand finished railings to match the premium rustic hardwoods and an overall airy open concept feel as desired by the client.

This 1993 4,200 square foot home had already been renovated once since its original construction, but the homeowners were not pleased with the result. As time passed, it was clear they would renovate again and this time they were sure to have their preferences noted! The to-do list was hefty; including the fixtures and finishes in the home; two bathrooms, powder room, flooring and painting, lighting, glass railings on curved stairs, railing and decking on second floor exterior patio, fireplace feature wall, and new wall finishes on two other fireplaces. The home is completely reinvented and the homeowner’s style has been achieved!
The existing home was fully renovated. Existing stone fireplaces were maintained and incorporated into the new design. Two additions were built which included a fourseason sunroom, new entry, office, master suite, ensuite, and main-floor laundry. Curb appeal was enhanced through the addition of a timber-framed canopy and entry with transom. The farm-house appeal was maintained by restoring vertical wood planking, installing whitewashed wood, and utilizing reclaimed barn-wood in the master bedroom. A lowmaintenance exterior was achieved without sacrificing the overall look-and-feel of the home. New masonry matching the existing was installed, with PVC windows, James Hardie siding, and aluminum cladding.

Hardwood medallions offer crowning touch by MARGARET ANNE FEHR
LOVERS OF HARDWOOD might have a hard time imagining how to improve on the beauty of their flooring but Boris Trachenko, P. Eng. and president of Sawyer’s Fine Woodworking Ltd., offers a compelling suggestion – hardwood medallions. What can be warmer, more natural and more beautiful than wood? The answer according to Boris is more wood, especially exotic wood. “Flooring inlays like medallions are beautiful centerpieces in open floor areas, a large hall, an entry way, a hallway or the central area of a room,” says Boris. Sawyer’s Fine Woodworking Ltd. sells its line of artistic floor medallions directly to homeowners or businesses looking to improve the interior design of their home or workplace. “It does not matter if you build a new home or renovate it,” says Boris. “Floor inlays can be installed in cottages, cabins, hotels or other facilities. interior designers to introduce our flooring inlays to their customers. As for care and upkeep, the woods we use in inlays are hard and wear-resistant, and they can very well withstand the stresses of high traffic areas of a house or business.” Boris never tires of expounding on the creative possibilities of exotic woods. “Every wood is different in texture, properties, colour, feel and look. Exotic hardwoods come from Africa, USA, Canada and tropical America. Different wood types form the design colour palette, allowing you to express the object’s half-tones and artistic potential. We currently use 17 types of exotic and domestic
hardwoods, including African ebony, leopardwood, bloodwood, holly and more. We do not limit ourselves by wood prices when a stunning appearance can be achieved by using real exotics.” The company offers a wide range of medallion styles on-line at www.sawyerswood.com while the majority of their designs are custom work. “People will want either a new design or perhaps different types of wood in an existing design. With the addition of adjuvants, the product is able to stick to harder to control weeds longer and better, allowing the product more time to absorb into the weed.

While Fiesta works well under ideal conditions, often times, our lawns can often experience periods of prolonged dry or wet weather over our prairie spring, summer, and fall. Being under pesticide restrictions for some time now, has allowed us to further develop and test improved methods of weed control. These past two summers we invested considerable time and resources into adjusting the volume, concentration, and frequency of our weed control applications. We also coupled those efforts with weed control additives such as adjuvants; sticking agents designed to help liquids stick to plant material, with the goal of designing a better weed control product.

All New Weed Control,
that is so effective we offer a money back guarantee!
Save Money! Save Water! DON’T FORGET AERATION! PROMOTES OPTIMUM LAWN HEALTH.
Where do you find perfectly manicured turf that makes you green with envy? If your mind quickly races to visions of the fairways and greens of your local golf course, you are not alone. It’s not coincidence that these acres of grass remain green and healthy spring, summer, and fall. Golf course superintendents know that core aeration is a vital component in any lawn care plan. If annual aeration is a key in the success of healthy turf at the best golf courses, it makes sense that you should make it part of your lawn care plan. Core aeration effectively “opens the pores” of compacted soils and reduces unhealthy thatch buildup. Compaction and thatch are the primary obstacles that keep nutrients, water, and air from reaching the root structure. Remember, it’s the health of what’s hidden below the surface that determines the appearance of the lush green lawn that we all enjoy. Water and nutrients are not intended for the green upper portion of your grass plants. Core aeration allows your irrigation and fertilizer investment to truly go further for you. You will easily recover the cost of the core aeration through a lower water bill. Every rainfall will penetrate deeper into your lawn resulting in less watering, better results from your program, and a more vibrant lawn. It’s a common sense practice that works! Maximum performance! Less watering! Smart decision!
Top Dressing Enrich your lawn with COMPOST Introduce vital new nutrients and microbes to your lawn. Our top dressing includes a fully matured, screened, weed free organic soil amendment and conditioner.
Compost is a valuable and rich soil amendment with many benefits: • • • • • • • • •

Weed free source of organic matter Rich in plant nutrients Reduces or eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers Suppresses plant diseases and pests Improves moisture and stabilizes soil PH Reduces compaction and loosens heavy clay soils Increases microbial activity

Super-Lite offers light years of knowledge by MARGARET ANNE FEHR photography by DUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC
50 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018
FOR OVER 70 YEARS, SUPER-LITE has been a leading light in Winnipeg (no pun intended) for both residential and commercial lighting products. Chances are that the majority of Winnipeggers have had or currently have a Super-Lite lighting fixture installed in their homes or offices. Not only can Super-Lite claim a long history but it is also stands out as the largest lighting showroom in Manitoba and one of the tenth largest showrooms in Canada, with 10,000 square feet of showroom space and 24,000 square feet of warehouse space. “We are unique in having a large warehouse, not common for other showrooms,” says Simon Simkin, president of Super-Lite
“Super-Lite distinguishes itself as a retailer and wholesaler of decorative lighting products whether they are used commercially in bars, hotels, and restaurants, residentially in homes, condos or apartment buildings or in office reception areas. That’s our wheelhouse, our specialty.” Super-Lite’s inventory is impressive with products sourced from hundreds of suppliers in Canada, the US and Europe. The Super-Lite on-line catalog at www.superlite.com makes browsing for that’ just-right’ fixture easy. Customers can learn more about the energy savings and efficiencies that today’s lighting fixtures deliver in long term performance. But looking at the company’s success from a business standpoint, Simkin stresses that product alone is not enough, that it must be backed with a level of customer service that guides clients in finding a perfect match for their particular needs and budgets. Super-Lite’s expert staff consists of 40 fulltime employees who are steeped in product knowledge in an industry that is seeing sweeping changes towards energy efficiency. “We spend a lot of time keeping our staff up to date with the newest, brightest and best on the

market. We bring in manufacturers’ representatives to give product knowledge briefings to our staff. We also tap into our own talent pool that can give information on their area of expertise through regular internal product knowledge sessions and instruct our staff on how best to deliver that information to our customers.” “The supplier reps are here every week either reviewing their stock, answering questions, making sure their catalogs are up to date, and they know every one of our sales people and probably all of our office staff so we are constantly in the know about cutting edge developments,” says Simkin. residential, condo and commercial development is occurring robustly in the city’s southeast and southwest areas. “We are in the heart of traffic patterns where we are visible to the public. It’s made for an easier shopping experience for our customers, who for the most part live in the area. A lot of them are renovating so it makes it especially convenient for those people.” Super-Lite is located at 1040 Waverley Street and is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9am to 6pm, and Thursday from 9am to 8pm. DESIGN 2018 TRENDS by LYNN FENWICK, B.I.D. photography by DUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC photos courtesy of A&S HOMES
SPRING COMES WITH THE IDEA OF REBIRTH, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth, and most people see it as a time of change. It is usually the time when we evaluate what we can do to rejuvenate our homes. With all the information available to us, finding inspiration is not a problem, it is deciphering what trends will last. We have itemized some of the trends we think are worth paying attention to. RESPECT THE EARTH
Designers are considering ways to provide sustainability, conserve energy and water. This consciousness is also spreading to clientele. People are questioning their choices of what it is they bring into their personal homes and spaces: What is the quality of 54 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018
this object? What do I know about the impact on the environment of this material? Is there another choice that could be more eco-friendly and sustainable for the environment? HEALTHY BEHAVIORS
The global shift has been to create spaces that promote wellness and healthy behaviors. We are asking the question: What can we do for ourselves in our homes that will keep us healthy, from the quality of our air, water, light, to enhancing our fitness, comfort, mindfulness and personal growth? “HYGGE” IS HUGE
Hygge will still be very much on trend. It is a Danish way of
living and is described as living comfortably and a feeling of contentment and well-being. It is what you do to make the room relaxed and comfortable. The emphasis is more on what you like and less on how it matches other furniture. A space that is curated and not decorated. Furniture will reflect the well-being of the individual; the emotional spirit of the people who live there will be reflected in all aspects of the design. The interior of homes in 2018 will be the external reflection of the hearts and minds of the owners. Everything will be rooted in meaning and the people that matter most. LAY BACK AND RELAX
In new homes and apartments, formal dining rooms aren’t the norm anymore. To maximize usable space, many people are converting the dining room into a library or media room. Homeowners and apartment dwellers are finding ways to create spaces designated for reading and watching TV. HOME AUTOMATION
These devices can save you time, money and/or make
your life a little easier. Automated lighting, window coverings, security systems, media. Many of the devices and appliances within the home are set to work together, and can all be controlled from a simple, user-friendly interface. CONNECTION
As a reaction to an increasingly technological world, natural disasters, and uncertainty in the political climate, there is a sense that we’re reaching the threshold of our emotional capacity. As a result, there is a desire for emotional connection. The way something feels in your hand, how you connect with the object will play an important role. KEEP IT NATURAL
Natural wood surfaces vs. painted will be an upcoming design trend. Natural wood surfaces in every tone are becoming increasingly more popular and will be featured in all areas of the home such as- buffets, counter-tops, furniture, side tables, decorative bowls, kitchen islands and utilitarian pieces like lamps. Wood on walls as well as ceilings is now trending. NextHome.ca 55
HAND MADE
Handmade ceramics dominate home accessories. In our tech-driven world, we all need handmade pieces in our lives! Expect to see these objects become even larger and more sculptural than before and in alluring, matte glazes.
revival and a bit of an update. Forget low-energy patterns and think over-sized blooms and botanical references in high-contrast colours such as black and white or teal and gold. THE HOT FABRIC… VELVET
TEXTURE AND WARMTH
Expect to see more fiber art, thicker upholstery fabrics, warmer paints and a complete rejection of stainless steel in favor of rose golds and copper. Mixing metals, texture, and sheen. Rich colours. Warm grays and rich, earthy shades of camel, rust, tobacco, brown-blacks, red and burnt yellow creating a more decadent look. Sinks will trend more to concrete, stone, copper and granite composite sinks trend to darker hues of gray, bronze or black. VINTAGE REDISCOVERED
Say “goodbye” to Mid-century modern! There is a resurgence of living with antique furnishings but refashioned in a new way to suit modern lifestyles. The inspiration drawn from vintage pieces of furniture is to be noted almost everywhere. Inspiration in the usage of new materials, new technologies and aesthetics to rethink and give a new life to a time-proven design. There is more interest in vintage-style fixtures, such as soft gold, aged copper and blackened bronze. CAN’T SEE THE LIGHT!
The LED bulb has all but taken over the world of lighting. LED is so versatile that it can easily be hidden in all kinds of unexpected places. The trend will be to light a room without seeing the source. CEILINGS WILL BE SEEN
Ignored for so long, ceilings are no longer forgotten. You will see creative moldings, coffered ceilings, wallpaper and wood of course! LOW MAINTENANCE
The trend is to want the luxurious without the maintenance. Home exteriors, metals, fabrics and floors will be as low maintenance as possible. CHINTZ OUT – IT’S IN!
Florals make a comeback. This popular print is getting a
Velvet fabrics and textures weave their way into anything from sofas to pillows to curtains. Choose the colour that speaks to you anything goes as long as it is in velvet. PATTERNED WALLCOVERINGS:
Wallpaper started to make its way back in 2015, though now it’s here as one the largest trends in design. Look for dramatic paisley, over scaled florals, and abstract patterns. COLOUR IS IN COMEBACK MODE:
White walls have their place, especially if the furniture and decor they are accented with contain bold, vibrant emerald, amethyst and indigo blue hues. Consumers are starting to hunger for colour once again. While white kitchens are beautiful, timeless, and classic, the prediction is they have reached the peak of popularity. In 2018, look out for more colour, darker, moodier, dramatic kitchens. COLOURS TO LOOK FOR:
• Barbie-like pink, the “Millennial Pink.“ • Primary colours come back, especially red, yellow (Mustard) and blue (Ultramarine). • Warm and earthy tones but becoming brighter, from Papaya orange to Burgundy red. • Violet and Purple, Pantone announced the Colour of the Year 2018 Ultra Violet and dark turquoise – also used in combination for saturated colour elegance. • Lots of Green, although the trend is sage, celery and avocado greens. • Black, Blue and White are still very popular. From nature and organic based design to the use of vibrant colours, luxurious Victorian era style, and warming up home spaces the unique mixes of metals, the design trend for 2018 is diverse. The common thread is the element of sophistication present in all aspects of design. So, what conclusion can we arrive at from this information? Select the trend that most fits your personality and your lifestyle and it will most assuredly stand the test of time.

Green Blade
Q &A
by TIM MUYS, GREEN BLADE LAWN CARE
Q| A|
Is the pesticide bylaw changing anytime soon?
Yes, but not in time for this season. We have heard that the pesticide bylaw will be amended for 2019. What those changes will look like is yet to be seen but we are optimistic that the changes will allow licensed lawn care professionals to resume the use of more effective weed control products.
Q| A|
Should I top dress my lawn?
Top dressing with the right product is a great idea at any time, emphasis on ‘the right product’. Always use a product that is bio degrading such as compost or
58 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018
manure, never top dress with top soil. The terms are easy to confuse. ‘Top soil’ is simply the top layer of the field from which the soil was removed by the soil company. ‘Top dressing’ is the addition of a top layer of material to aid in the health of the lawn. However, top soil is a poor choice for top dressing as it contains fewer microbes and less nutrient value for the lawn, and worst of all, it is loaded with weeds. A better choice for top dressing would be compost or manure, both of which are high in microbial content, are full of nutrients, and have no weeds. Microbes are the microscopic organisms that break down nutrient compounds into food that your lawn can digest. If your lawn is struggling or if you are looking to improve your lawn, high microbial activity will be crucial. Compost
or manure will also contain valuable nutrients that will continue to break down and feed your lawn for weeks and even months. A good manure to choose would be sheep or chicken manure. Do not bury your lawn when top dressing. The lawn should be covered by no more than 1/2” of material at most. If your lawn is in very rough shape, top dress once in the spring, and again later in the season to add more beneficial material.
Q| A|
Is hand raking my lawn in the spring sufficient?
No. Save yourself some money and perform the best spring cleanup on your street by renting a power rake. Hand raking is back breaking and will give you blisters you’ll feel for a week and does a very poor job of getting any real thatch out of your lawn. A power rake is easy to use and will do 10x the job of removing thatch from your lawn, allowing your lawn to breathe and take 100% advantage of every rainfall and any fertilizer you put into it. A lawn that is power raked has much better odds of looking better than a lawn that has been hand raked. Simply run the power rake over the lawn, watch in awe at the thatch it pulls up, rake up the thatch with a fan rake, and mow your lawn to 1.5” using a bagging lawn mower and by the time you are finished, you will already see green colour coming out of your lawn. Give your lawn a brief watering to wash the dust off the grass and you will see even more colour.
Q| A|
How can I stripe my lawn like a professional?
Striping your lawn is easy. The stripes you see on baseball fields and professionally maintained turf are created by flattening the grass in alternating directions. By flattening the grass in opposite directions, the viewer sees either the flat part of the grass blade (darker rows), or the tips of the grass blade (lighter rows). This is accomplished by simply attaching a roller kit to your mower. You may have to do a little digging online to find a kit that fits your mower, but many are universal and there are even videos that show you how to make a good roller yourself. Simply attach the roller to the back of your mower and you are ready to stripe your lawn.
Q| A|
How can I avoid getting chinch bugs or minimize my chinch bug damage?
Chinch bugs can destroy your lawn in a matter of days. The damage is permanent and the damaged lawn must be replaced. Chinch bugs, like many other insects, tend to peak and wane in cycles. They are always present in your lawn just like ants, spiders, and worms. In most years, their numbers remain low enough that you never notice their presence and the lawn is able to repair itself. In other years, their numbers can explode without warning. This explosion usually begins by late May or June and always when the lawn is dry. Chinch bug damage always begins in full sun on elevated areas of the lawn which would be the driest first. Chinch bugs suck the juice out of grass plants. Their saliva contains a toxin that then kills the grass plant from tip to root over the next few days as the poison spreads through the plant. Chinch bugs lay eggs in generations and we have seen as many as three generations of egg laying in our worst, long summer in Manitoba. One adult female (1st generation) lays approximately 200 eggs, of which 100 are likely female. Those 100 females (2nd generation) will lay another 200 eggs. By the third generation, one male and female can produce over 20,000 offspring by the end of the summer. That’s a staggering number of devastating insects. The easiest way to avoid or limit chinch bug damage is to keep your lawn watered when conditions are dry. Chinch bugs hate moisture. If your lawn is kept watered during dry spells, the chinch bugs will either move to your neighbour’s lawn, or at the very least, the damage to your lawn will be minimal and easily repairable. Small water bill and a nicer looking lawn, or major lawn repair, it’s up to you.

AERATION
When is the best time for one? by TIM MUYS, GREEN BLADE LAWN CARE
AN AERATOR IS A MACHINE that has several tines on the bottom that are designed to punch into your lawn and remove a small tube of dirt that we call a plug. The holes that remain in your lawn are called cores. By removing theses cores from your lawn, water, air, and fertilizer can now penetrate deeper into the soil to better reach the root system of your lawn. In essence, aeration will maximize the value of everything else you do to your lawn over the entire summer. If you are someone who either enjoys considerable time in your yard, or if you invest a few dollars in fertilizing or watering your lawn over the season, then an

aeration will help you achieve maximum value of everything you put into your lawn. Aeration does not need to be done every year unless you have an older lawn that is struggling. A brand new lawn will not need to be aerated for the first few years. A lawn that is five years old or older should be aerated every two years. In comparison, golf courses aerate their greens several times each year, and most aerate their fairways at least a couple of times each season. Their investment in lawn care products is far more significant than most homeowners and golf courses recognize the value of aeration in maximizing

the effectiveness of their significant expenses of fertilizer and watering. Considering the minimal cost of an aeration, most homeowners will see the cost of the service returned to them easily over the season, particularly if it is a dry summer where every drop of water, whether natural or from the sprinkler, needs to be maximized. The aerator will leave hundreds of cores behind. The cores removed from your lawn should typically be large enough to insert your pinky finger about 1.5” to 2” deep. Do not use the plugs on your lawn as an indicator as to how deep the cores in the lawn are, as the plugs are often squeezed out of the machine, being pushed up and out as the next plug enters the tine. If your cores are not 1.5” to 2” deep, it is likely that your lawn is very compact and you should aerate your lawn annually to continue reducing compaction. The plugs that are left behind on your lawn will break down within a week or two and should be left on the lawn. The best time for a residential owner to perform aeration in Manitoba is in the spring, never in the fall. The primary purpose for doing aeration as mentioned earlier is to get water, fertilizer, and air to penetrate the soil deeper. The most stressful time of the year for your lawn is the heat of the summer in July and August, when temperatures rise, and water often becomes scarce. The lawn is softest or
least compact in the spring. Thus, an aeration performed in the spring will achieve the best results just a few weeks ahead of when you need it most. Aerating in the Fall is a waste of money for a homeowner. Within a month or two of aerating in the fall, the lawn is suffocated by snow. That snow piles up, pressing debris in the lawn into every available crack and crevice. As the snow melts, more debris and particles in the runoff plug up all the cores in your lawn effectively negating the value of the aeration done in the fall. Water is in abundance in the spring. Lawns are supersaturated in the spring and water is not an issue and it is almost impossible for air to reach the roots. As the water evaporates and gets used up by the lawn, growth begins, air begins reaching the roots, and fertilizing begins. That is the perfect time to aerate.

Home office DESIGNER JO ALCORN CREATES A STREAMLINED OFFICE WITH MASCULINE TOUCHES
D
JO ALCORN
URING MY DESIGN CAREER, I have worked on many office spaces, but this particular project was very exciting for me because my client wanted a streamlined design with masculine details. The space was in dire need of a transformation because it was used to store the “unwanted.” You know, the stuff you accumulate in life but just can’t throw away. Here is how I tackled the project. First things first – I wanted to set the tone of the room by creating a dramatic wall treatment. I used MDF shiplap by Metrie (metrie.com), which covered almost all the walls in the office. I installed baseboards from the Pretty Simple Collection to finish off the room, and all the trim was painted with Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White – CC-20 (benjaminmoore.com). The only wall that I didn’t add shiplap to was the back wall; here I installed a stunning, open bookshelf. I made this wall really stand out by painting a dark colour behind it in Benjamin Moore’s Wolf Gray – 2127-40. Next, it was time to choose the furniture, and I aimed to keep things custom and masculine. I worked with Harkel Office (harkeloffice.com) and its new West Elm Workspace line, produced exclusively with Inscape. I was able to completely customize everything. From choosing among many different patterns for the chair and sofa upholstery, to the finish on the bookshelves, I was able to find exactly what would work for my client.

In today’s busy and ever-changing world, it’s a must to have a TV in an office. For this space, I chose a Sharp 55-in 1080p HD TV by Roku (roku. com). It has a great remote control, but it also has a mobile app, so you can control everything from your smartphone, and even cast music, photos and videos to the big screen. While the design of any space is important, an office has to be equipped for function. In this office, I installed the new Velop Whole Home Wi-Fi system (linksys.com). This system blankets an entire home or office with Wi-Fi, no matter the size and shape. I also love the look of the system, as it can be easily incorporated into the decor. I love to include personalized artwork into offices. I chose to get all the artwork in this space from Posterjack, Canada’s photo art experts (posterjack.ca). I uploaded gorgeous personal photos from the client’s recent vacations and fun memories from their cottage. Of course, you can see my love of dogs also shines through in this space with photos of their family pooch. I used a myriad of Posterjack’s different options, like its canvas minis, lacquer frames, woodstand prints, acrylic blocks, and more. It allowed me to create a great diversity of photo art in this space. I then swapped out a small ceiling light for a stunning, artistic piece from Harkel office. It has a dimmer option, so my client can adjust, depending on the natural light coming in from the large windows behind the desk. My favourite part of any design project is the finishing touches! I had so much fun shopping at HomeSense (homesense.ca) where my budget went a long way. I was able to find a wide-assortment of masculine accessories such as bookends, globes, greenery and more. Finally, I topped it off with the perfect cushions and curtains that were made for this space.

The art of order
T
HE NEW BOOK REMODELISTA: The Organized Home by Julie Carlson and Margot Guralnick is all about promoting better living through organization, and we couldn’t agree more! Here are eight ways to incorporate organization into your life now.
Buy fewer (and better) things. Resist impulse and stopgap purchases. Instead, zero in on quality. Donate the stuff you don’t use. That includes unwanted gifts. Let someone else put your castoffs to good use. Shop your own house. A surprising array of storage challenges can be solved with a wellmade basket, tray or hook – chances are you already own most of the supplies that you need. Steal ideas from organizational masters. Experts, such as hoteliers and shopkeepers, know how to come up with novel, affordable approaches to storage.
Ditch the plastic. Seek out products made of sustainable natural materials, such as wood, glass and ceramic. They’re better for the planet, and you won’t have to stash them out of sight. 70 Home Decor & Renovations | APR - MAY 2018

Know what you’ve got. Ample storage is not necessarily a good thing. We’ve been conditioned to think that huge closets are desirable, but the truth is they can encourage you to avoid pruning your belongings (and to lose track of what you have).
Establish habits and routines that simplify your life. Always keep your keys and eyeglasses in designated spots.
Relax and make yourself at home. Too much enforced order is uninviting for occupants and guests alike; rooms are for living.
