SOUTHWEST EDMONTON
IS AT THE EPICENTRE OF GROWTH
by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ
With its wealth of new, family-friendly communities, Edmonton’s southwest may be seen as the heart of suburban living in the city. But there is also an air of urban excitement here, that along with its close connection to nature and sky-high potential for growth, may make it the best opportunity to achieve life-work balance in the city.
The southwest sector of Edmonton can be characterized in a couple of ways – one, as a booming, cosmopolitan mini-city with tons of growth potential, and the other as a nature-connected enclave that offers the peace and tranquility of the quiet countryside.
But what it is ultimately is a welcoming community where families can set down roots, with a multitude of opportunities for homebuyers to find their forever home.
A PLACE TO GROW
Southwest Edmonton is a sprawling area in the capital region that is characterized by surrounding parks and green space. The new communities of the southwest take up the biggest space in the map sections of this magazine with 38 various residential developments spanning two pages. Every other sector in our Edmonton area maps only has one page, some just half.
According to Alberta Provincial Electoral records, Edmonton Southwest has a total population of 45, 955. Total private households are 16,160, while single detached homes make up 62.9 per cent of the total and 86 per cent own their home. More than 62 per cent of the population earn $100,000 and over annually.
This area is comprised of several different neighbourhoods in the city such as Riverbend, Terwillegar Towne and the quickly growing Windermere Area. Within these larger neighbourhoods are smaller communities as well, but when combined together they all form what Edmonton residents commonly refer to as the South West.
Every type of housing option in every budget is readily available here, from apartment condos, to townhomes, to luxurious estate family homes. Almost all of Edmonton’s most recognizable builders and developers have a presence here, including Cantiro and the Rohit Group.
Rohit’s active projects here include Arbours of Keswick and Ridgecrest at Glenridding Ravine; while Cantiro has ONE at Keswick, Cantiro Townhomes at ONE at Keswick, and The Drive in Windermere and ONE at Windermere.
COMMERCIAL CORE
The energy is palpable in the southwest, especially along the popular Currents of Windermere commercial centre, where new retail shops, restaurants and services are going up fast.
Just off Anthony Henday and Terwillegar Drive, Currents of Windermere is SW Edmontons finest new shopping centre destination, featuring quality retailers, convenient services, entertainment and convenient and delicious dining options. It features many new-tomarket concepts, defining it as a unique shopping destination.
Restaurants and diners or every flavour are within, like Barcelos – the home of flame-grilled chicken, or Burger Village which specializes in organic fastfood menu
There are fresh, exciting new restaurants that cater to a wide range of tastes throughout the southwest that show the area’s inclusive nature. Popular is Hart’s Table & Bar that prides itself as one of a great neighbourhood restaurant & bar that offers a warm, relaxed social experience paired with a hand-made, locally sourced menu.
“Italian food done right” is how some of Oliveto Trattoria’s fans describe this dining at its Riverbend Square location. Their antipasti and pasta selections are among the finest in town.
Then there is XIX Nineteen that brings contemporary tastes to traditional favourites, Buco Pizzeria & Vino Bar that specializes in fresh, modern Italian entrées, grilled dishes, desserts, and napoletana pizza. Simply put, the southwest has something for everyone not only in housing choices, but in dining as well.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
If you’re a golfer, the southwest may just be the best community as the popular Jagare Ridge Golf Club, River Ridge Golf & Country Club and the Windermere Golf & Country Club are within its borders. But that isn’t the only outdoor activity one can enjoy in the southwest.
There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities around. It is in fact promoted by many of the land developers here as among the area’s greatest assets. Whitemud Creek runs through the southwest and affords plenty of quiet, idyllic scenery for calm walks, jogging or biking.
The seven-acre Gordon King Pond in the Arbours of Keswick neighbourhood has become an escape to nature for many residents.
Their other southwest community, Ridgecrest at Glenridding Ravine, backs onto Whitemud Creek Ravine, and there will be beautiful homes on the ridge that overlook stunning sceneries. Everyone in the community will have access to walking paths that lead through this wonderful natural landscape and storm ponds.
CHOICES GALORE
Cantiro offers the most exclusive address in the southwest in The Drive in Windermere, which boasts some of the most luxurious estate homes with a scenic setting.
Cantiro’s ONE at Keswick has also attracted a lot of attention with its diverse array of homes and amenities. It has two new K-9 schools, 19+ kilometres of pathways and has sustainability as a big part of their development. “It has been one of the most popular areas to call home in Southwest Edmonton,” she says.
