A COMMUNITY IN BLOOM by PEPPER RODRIGUEZ Maple Crest was designed to offer ease of living through an abundance of home styles and a wealth of amenities, and the dream is quickly becoming a reality as this young southeast Edmonton community moves to its latest phase. A promotional event showcasing the community’s showhomes in the fall was an outstanding success as participants not only had fun competing for prizes – in a safe and orderly manner complying 18

with all health guidelines – but also to open their eyes to the lasting appeal of the community itself. The contest ran from the end of September until the third week of October. Participants who came to the showhomes got the chance to fill out a ballot and enter a draw to win. Each showhome had a unique prize, which ranged from an electric scooter to a new drill/ driver set. “We had several people come out and participate, and there were

And the single-family homes are beautiful to tour, so they’ve received a lot of positivity for their decor choices, lovely large kitchens and bathrooms, as well as interesting features like a spice kitchen or entertainment room.” The newest phase of the over 166-hectare community exemplifies the kind of living that can be found in Maple Crest. “Maple Crest exists on the core values of living with ease, living with nature, and living with choice. Charity begins at home, and Edmonton’s homebuilding industry takes this saying to heart, donating millions in cash and kind to help those who need it most in the city where they do business. The helping hand is especially more welcome this year, as the economic slowdown has made donations harder to come by, even as the pandemic and the lockdown made it more necessary. But in the time of need, builders are still coming through. Sometimes funny, sometimes inventive but always with caring at their core, the homebuilding industry finds ways to give back to the community that has supported their business. Here are some examples of how the industry is giving back. ROHIT GROUP OF COMPANIES

The respected land developer and homebuilder started in Edmonton in 1986 and they have been always

involved in community-building – literally and figuratively. “Rohit has always believed in building strong communities, and in a time where it’s more important than ever to give back we are glad we can continue to do that,” says Rohit Communities’ Marketing Manager (capitalized), Lina Nguyen. This Holiday season actually started early for Rohit – November 4 to be exact, with their annual Baskets of Hope. This is the 11th year they are holding this fundraiser for WIN House, which provides shelter and resources to women who are victims of abuse. Knowing the need was more important this year than ever, Baskets of Hope pivoted into a “Donation Drive Thru Drop-Off” at the Rohit Group office where generous donations – both monetary and in kind – were accepted by smiling faces behind the masks. AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE LAURA BRUNO

Have you noticed the CHBAEdmonton Region Awards of Excellence logo around the City? Do you visit the award winning Builders’ show homes? Do you wonder how they became Awards of Excellence winners? It’s actually quite the process to go from entrant to winner, here’s an inside look at the road to winning. First, CHBA – Edmonton Region members submit entries into one of the more than 60 available award categories. There are categories for single family, multi-family and infill housing, community development, renovation, trades, suppliers and more. Once submissions close, the homes entered go through a cost review process. This process includes a thorough review of each submission by industry experts who are intimately familiar with building costs to ensure each submission is in the correct price category.

Once cost review is complete, all the submissions move on to be officially judged. Our judges are made up of volunteers from across Canada who work in the residential construction industry. This army of judges look at the entries, giving scores for floor plans, price, special features, design appeal, and more depending on the category. There are also special Builder of the Year categories. To become Builder of the Year, members accumulate points for every category that they are a finalist in. The better their finalist position, the more points they are awarded. One of the most interesting parts of Builder of the Year is that customers also have a hand in choosing who wins. Builders also receive points based on how they perform in customer satisfaction surveys that are collected after the first and thirteenth months of a home purchase, so don’t forget to fill those out! These points combined with points from awards are added together to determine the Small Volume, Large Volume and Multi Family Builders of the Year.

Next time you see the Awards of Excellence logo, know that there’s months of work on submissions, review and an army of industry volunteers who contribute to crowning the ultimate winner. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Edmonton Region is a not-for-profit, volunteer driven organization that has fostered a community for the residential construction industry supporting more than 450 member companies through advocacy, education and recognition. Laura Bruno is the Chief Executive Officer of CHBA – ER. Laura began her career in land development where she discovered she had a passion for the industry. She started at CHBA – ER in 2018 and has been a strong advocate and champion for the industry since assuming that role.
