CHECK REFERENCES ON A PROSPECTIVE ROOMIE

KATHRYN KUSYSZYN Employers check references, landlords check references, and if you’re considering someone as a roommate, you should check their references, too. A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations. Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases. Discuss how they feel about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores and other mutual responsibilities. Ask

why they left their last place and how long they lived there. The application should ask for references from a current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate. By providing contact info, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them. When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check. Ask previous landlords how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time and why they left. Past roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long they lived together. Ask what they liked and disliked about living with them and

why they went separate ways. If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware. You will be living with this person in close quarters and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them. ST. VITAL BETWEEN TWO RIVERS

St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers. The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary. Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river. As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river. Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes. Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets. Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became 14

overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south. St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south. The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive. With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus

routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view. Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour. Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena. St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

For example, as items are being transferred to and from the truck, how can you be sure nothing goes missing? Make sure those involved don’t leave vehicles unattended for too long. This is particularly important when moving in or out of an apartment building, when trips to the elevator may mean those

carrying the items are gone from the moving vehicle for extended periods of time. Untrained people who help you move may inadvertently cause damage because they lack the know-how to move certain items. Movers have special packing materials, labels and loading/ unloading techniques in place to protect these cherished pieces. Moving electronic storage equipment and servers can be tricky. Does your mover have a strategy in place with information security as a goal? It’s also a good idea to have specific items appraised and insured personally to protect them. Create an inventory, take photos and provide a copy to the mover. Another aspect of a move

is the ability of the drivers. Are they skilled, experienced or even trained to drive the vehicle safely? If you are not used to driving with a heavy load, it can be risky. A professional moving company provides trained drivers. A mover who offers full insurance with professional and bonded employees relieves you of safety and security issues. Sometimes, we get so bogged down with all the things on our “to-do” list that we forget to take time for ourselves. Here are some tips to help simplify your life.

Life has a way of flowing effortlessly when we put ourselves out there. If there’s something you’ve been wanting in your life, take one small action toward it and notice how other things fall into place. It could be a simple phone call you’ve been putting off, a book you’ve been meaning to read or a website you’ve wanted to visit. Do it now and have faith in the power of taking that first step.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT.

We have become a society of multi-taskers, but in an effort to be more efficient, we have robbed ourselves of the pure pleasure that comes from performing simple tasks. Next time you wash dishes, fold laundry or set the table, focus only on the task at hand. Engage your senses. Notice the fresh smell of clean laundry, the rainbow colours in the soap bubbles, the beauty of a table set with care (candles, flowers and cloth napkins). You’ll feel less frazzled and more peaceful. LET GO OF THE “SHOULDS”
