ooking for kitchen design inspiration with a touch of la dolce vita? If the two charming hosts of the HGTV hit show Kitchen Cousins don’t add some zest to your plans, nothing will. Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri have been busy making a living renovating properties in the New Jersey area for years, and the close-knit cousins continue to operate Brunelleschi Construction, a family-run business with Italian-American while filming their newest program, Cousins on Call. Their new show has them traveling and constructing big-buck yet budget-friendly projects all across the United States. Unlike many reality shows, this one is unscripted, and the cousins go to great lengths to “wow” even the most persnickety of patrons. They are consummate professionals at

duo said they both prefer an open-concept floor plan, even if that means moving a wall, cabinets or plumbing – they agreed it’s definitely the key to a successful kitchen. “The kitchen is the most multi-functional room of the home – it’s like Grand Central Station – it’s where you do your bills, cook and more. It’s important to get it right,” says Carrino. What is your favourite kitchen configuration?

transforming kitchens into livable spaces for families to celebrate and enjoy life. No doubt the duo are set to become even more popular with Canadian viewers thanks to their great design sense, good looks and down-to-earth nature. I had a chance to spend time with Colaneri and Carrino at HGTV headquarters in downtown Toronto where they passed along some of their best before-and-after shots and a couple of Dos and Don’ts to help ensure your kitchen project results are primo! What are some of the key elements that make a great kitchen?

Make it unique by adding some pizzazz in terms of the backsplash or countertop materials you use. Favourite materials for the latter include engineered quartz brands such as Silestone, Caesarstone and Cambria. “Pay attention to flow,” says Colaneri. The

When the option allows for it, the galley kitchen is the way to go! Colaneri created a galley kitchen in his mother’s home. Originally designed as a C-shaped kitchen, the new design utilized one long wall and incorporated a 17-ft. island where the family can gather for any occasion. The area was completely unrecognizable to Colaneri. “I can’t believe it’s the same space. It looks so much bigger now,” remarks Colaneri. “The galley kitchen concept is really ideal and definitely one of the most functional you will ever come across,” says Carrino. What about the importance of creating a “triangle” in terms of the placement of the appliances, workspaces and sink?

“Who came up with that theory, anyway? Another do not do. Don’t get stuck trying to conform to a triangle configuration when planning your layout – it’s really not necessary. Design configuration depends strictly on your space,” says Carrino. To paint or not to paint? The ultimate cabinet question.

Thinking of doing a DIY paint job on your cabinets? Don’t bother. Both agree that the paint will likely chip and you’ll always end up seeing the brush strokes somewhere. The cousins suggest having a professional paint sprayer come to your home. The pro’s will tape and seal off the kitchen from the rest of the home and spray the cabinets onsite so you don’t have to remove the boxes. “This can save you up to 50 per cent on your reno,” says Carrino. “By respraying your cabinets instead of replacing them and by SEP - OCT 2013 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS 9

updating the hardware, you’re set. It’s easy, durable and looks great.” What’s the big “DO NOT” when it comes to a kitchen project?

The cousins both agree that corner sinks are a big no-no. “Do not do!” says Colaneri. “Do not like!” says Carrino. What about trends?

“We don’t really look at the trends,” says Carrino. “We like mixing elements of new contemporary and rustic to create a space that’s truly personal,” says Colaneri. “It’s a transitional look we like to go for.” Transitional design is a combination of classic and contemporary looks, midway between old-world traditional and the world of chrome and glass contemporary. Transitional design should be classic, timeless and clean. So, do you ever argue about ideas on their kitchens?

Not really, they both agree. “We really tend to come to more of a consensus on a project,” says Colaneri. “It’s really a collaboration of ideas. The more ideas, the better. The sum of two parts is better than one,” adds Carrino. Some final thoughts or advice?

“I would say husbands and significant others who pretend they don’t care “People always know what they don’t want,” says Colaneri. “The most daunting part of about what a reno looks like, take heed. Husbands need to get involved,” the process is finding out what a client does like. We find we have to help them figure out what they do like,” says Carrino. “And we recommend having lots of conversations says Colaneri. “The last thing we to help figure that part out!” want to hear at the end of a reno is that one person doesn’t like it,” adds Carrino. “That’s a recipe for a disaster.“ Catch their new show Cousins On Call Monday’s at 10 p.m. on HGTV. 10 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS SEP - OCT 2013

“T

his isn’t finished yet,” says Alex Umnikov, a soft-spoken man with a Russian accent. He lifts a small handmade wooden cover to reveal a hole in the beautiful walnut floor of his master bedroom. In a renovation project that cost half a million dollars, his twostorey Mill Creek home was stripped down to its studs, then re-imagined and rebuilt in a collaborative process that lasted several months. But the cabinet that will access the laundry chute he insists on making himself. It’s in his nature. Despite the price tag on his reno, he is a practical man, as well as a skilled craftsman. He used leftover boards of the same dark toffee-coloured wood that runs throughout his home – making you want to remove your socks to feel its undulations – to build a desk into a second-story guest room. It’s a simple, rustic piece that fits perfectly in a home that speaks of old-world permanence and master craftsmanship.

Through triple paned glass windows, framed by moulding that would be at home in a Dickens story, the view looks north to the steel and concrete highrises springing up from the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. People started building houses here beside Edmonton`s Mill Creek Ravine after the railroad tracks that ran through it on the way to the Yukon were removed in the first half of the last century. Alex and his wife, Dawn, knew what they wanted when they saw the home. Nine-foot ceilings and an attached garage are rare in this neighbourhood. The couple just didn’t know if the metamorphosis they envisioned was practical. “Before we bought, we had Houseworks come in,” says Alex. The “bones” of the home were subjected to the x-ray vision of the burgeoning Edmonton design and construction company headed by Shaun Kerr, and demolition work commenced. Virtually everything, down to the wiring and plumbing, was replaced.

2 A custom fireplace in the study harkens back an earlier age of smoky private clubs in London. 3 A vaulted ceiling adds airiness and luxury to the master bedroom. 4 The master ensuite was inspired by a Paris boudoir. 5 Houseworks chief designer Erin Lecavalier discusses window coverings with owner Dawn Umnikov.

Little remains of the original structure, apart from the exterior walls. “Alex calls it ‘our luxury European apartment,’” says Dawn. “It’s pretty compact. Not like a suburban house at all.” Upstairs, three bedrooms were incorporated into two, a master bedroom and a guest room, each with its own bathroom. The flat ceilings were taken down in each, the load points repositioned and the trusses re-engineered to allow for the vaulted ceilings that give the bedrooms such an open, airy feel. In order to save space, a sliding, barn-style door was used for the master bathroom, with its separate toilet, free-standing tub, spacious shower and built-in closets. Downstairs, the main floor is dominated by an open-concept kitchen, dining and entertainment area, highlighted by a huge slab of quartz countertop specially sourced and nearly impossible to distinguish from Carrara marble. “I think Shaun was in constant contact with the ship that was bringing it over,” says Alex. Tying together all three rooms are the meticulously coved ceilings, which resonate with the wainscoting and casings around double French doors that lead onto an elevated outdoor patio. Inspiration for a separate study, also accessed through double French doors, came from old European library and smoking rooms, says Dawn. But the undisputed focal point of the room is a magnificent stone fireplace that nearly everyone advised them against as too heavy a presence for the room, she says. “Shaun made that happen.”

Like every other design decision, it`s inclusion was agreed on in consultation with each other and with Houseworks, say Alex and Dawn. “We would never reach the same decisions separately,” says Alex. “Dawn and I always reach consensus, unless someone says, ‘I don`t care,’ and means it.” It was an approach that made what might have been a long, frustrating process a bonding experience, and not only with each other. You form a relationship with the tradesmen you see and interact with over such a long period. “They were all wonderful,” says Dawn. “Shaun was flexible and good-humoured. One of the things I valued most about him was his attentiveness to any concerns we had, and his commitment to making things work. “There were a lot of wonderful people working on our house and their attention and care for the work they were doing shows and is very much appreciated.” says Dawn. “Anyone can frame a wall,“ adds Alex. “It takes special dedication and professionalism to move it three times to make the space work for the client. We would recommend them to anyone.“

suppliers of stone countertops, with over 100 showhomes in Northern Alberta under their belt. Thanks to having suppliers all around the world, Edmontonians have access to a very large inventory of some of the world’s finest natural stone products—granite, marble and quartz. “We shop all around the world for our product—we have suppliers everywhere. In fact, we take on average four to five trips overseas every year, visiting trade fairs, quarries and seeing what’s new out there,” says Ricky Nayar, CEO of Atlas Granite. They house their slabs including a private collection of exclusive colours in a large warehouse in the city, and manufacture their products in Edmonton. Those products include countertops, bathroom vanity countertops, fireplaces, and tubs and shower surrounds. “Because we fabricate our own slabs, we don’t have to show our customers small samples. So when customers are looking for stone, we can take them down to our warehouse and show them the actual slabs. And that means customers know exactly what their stone will look like. Our pricing is also more competitive because we buy directly from source and we cut out the middleman.” Manufacturing in-house also means customers don’t have to wait long for the custom product to be fabricated. Nayar says that from the date you place your order to when you get your countertops is about three to four weeks. Also they are big on automation and have a digital manufacturing plant to fabricate their products. Nayar: “We use state of the art equipment in our plant including laser, computer numeric controlled machines, edge polishers and robotics to fabricate stone which ensures precision and quality each time, every time.” Atlas offers an optional 15-year sealer warranty on natural stone products, making them one of the few in Edmonton to offer such a long-term warranty.

Welcome to the

BLAKEY RESIDENCE! by MARIE SOPROVICH

SOME PEOPLE INVEST THEIR RESOURCES IN A

collection of fast cars and stately automobiles, some in art and collecting expensive artifacts and some people invest in their deep love of architecture and the preservation of historical buildings that define our city. This article is about one of these homeowners and their journey in working with Architect David Murray and the team at Aquarian Renovations to create a masterpiece in the style and character of the mid-century modern work of Architect William Blakey (1882 – 1975) What motivates a home owner to invest a significant amount of time, energy and resources into an older home? For some it is about repair, customization, a face lift, increased value or functionality. For others, especially those who have a deep love for architecture as history, art and the desire to live in such a stimulating, delightful environment the restoring and remodeling becomes a passion and much joy flows into the project. The social impact of our homes has changed over the past one hundred years. Small kitchens have been replaced with modern needs for cooking space and social gathering. Spacious, modern counter tops

and cabinetry with significant storage space for all our gadgets and sophisticated cookware are real needs. Oversized walk-in closets are almost essential today and furniture sizes and family patterns have changed. Bigger bedrooms with private baths and electronic upgrades and accessibility are a must have. The master suite needs to be spacious and have the ensuite of a five star hotel. So how does one go about creating this kind of renovation experience while being true to the nature of the original vision of an architect from another era? The limitations of designing a renovation and addition within a heritage home add another entire level of complexity. What you can and cannot do to a heritage home is determined case by case and there is a group of people at the City Heritage Planners who do more than help out, they direct the restoration process. Many useful resources can be found at the City of Edmonton http://www.edmonton.ca/ city_government/edmonton_archives/historicresources.aspx and through the Edmonton Historical Board. Homeowner Marianne is closely involved with the Heritage Planners in the City and takes tremendous pride in her home.

“This home is a designated municipal resource. This designation guides the conservation process. The changes required approval by the heritage planners as outlined by the City of Edmonton’s Historical Resources Management Plan. Not all heritage homes have this designation. As owners we choose to do so with the City.” These were some of the challenges that architectural enthusiast and home owners Marianne and her husband Paul faced when they decided that their historic west-end home needed more living space. The design of the addition, done by architect David Murray, who specializes in heritage conservation, protected and restored the heritage value of the house, including its original form, composition and exterior features. The additional 1100 square feet of living space was designed and added in close consultation with the heritage planners at the City of Edmonton and architect, homeowners and renovator worked closely to ensure that this local landmark and historical gem was constructed and finished with the flair that would make even William Blakey stand up and cheer! The homeowners of the Blakey house had a deep emotional connection to their home, right down to the studs – and in order to create the

kinds of changes necessary to experience a “new home feel” in the old style, taking the structure down to the studs needed to happen. Architect David Murray sums up the urban design considerations when he writes, “The owner wanted to maintain a friendly and open relationship with the neighbourhood while providing a sense of privacy that a family requires.” His fence design and window placement in the new build were strategic to the views from within the house and the privacy needed from without. “A screen-enclosed veranda was used as the device that provides an appropriate transition between the house and the yard, while enhancing the sense of connection with the neighbourhood and the street.” Exterior work was finished in the same style as the original house and the overall effect

THE LIMITATIONS OF DESIGNING A RENOVATION AND ADDITION WITHIN A HERITAGE HOME ADD ANOTHER ENTIRE LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY. The fully landscaped yard complete with underground sprinklers were the final addition the homeowners invested in so as to create a little slice of paradise right in their own front yard. The homeowners have a deep sense of pride in the work they have done and the legacy they are leaving within the property. Their investment was significant and they made clear decisions to secure the best renovations possible by engaging the knowledgeable work of Architect David Murray and the Aquarian Renovation team. Together the magic of the renovation came together and the results will stand the test of time for many generations to come. This architecturally significant house has some impressive features including 2952 sq. ft. of open concept living space plus a basement theater room. There are three gracious bedrooms on the upper floor and three bathrooms including a main floor bathroom with handicapped shower access. Large walk in-closets are off the master and one of the three fireplaces is in the master bedroom. A new detached double garage can be found at the back of the house and the original

and newly refurbished single garage is at the front. The computer room, once the study of William Blakey himself is now a library with built in book shelves and plenty of room for extra house guests. Hardwood graces the floors throughout except for the terrazzo flooring in the kitchen and tiles in the foyer. The second floor laundry is totally efficient for dealing with the laundry where it is most needed. A Fisher Paykel fridge, gas stove and oven are a delight when preparing meals and hor’dourves for entertaining guests. The new furnaces keep everyone cozy in the cooler days of fall and winter with one for heating the older area and another for the new. All the windows in the original structure have been rebuilt to specifications of the original design and are the eyes into the community and the portal of sunshine into the house. William Blakey would be proud and so are the homeowners Marianne and Paul, Architect David Murray and Aquarian Renovations. What a tremendous team effort and what an impressive place to live!

The impact of stuff by HELLEN BUTTIGIEG

EVERYTHING AROUND YOU HAS AN IMPACT ON YOU

whether you realize it or not. When you create and develop your décor, you are trying to set the tone of the room – give it a certain look and feel. You take time to include pieces you like and enjoy, whether they are part of the design or part of the function of the room. But other pieces make their way into your space, even though they may not belong there or may be there for the wrong reasons. By organizing, de-cluttering and streamlining, you can make sure your environment has the right effect! Is clutter getting you down? Surrounding ourselves with items that mean something to us brings pleasure. And then there’s all the other stuff. Often when we feel down but can’t figure out why, it could be the clutter. Even if it’s stuffed in the back of the closet, the basement or the garage, you know it’s there. Every item holds a vibrational energy; if you’ve buried sad reminders of disappointments from your past, know that as long as you keep these emotionally toxic things in your space, they are still haunting you. Break free from the past and make space for new opportunities to come into your life. If it’s in storage and bringing you sorrow, now is a great time to let it go. Out with the old, in with the new! Eliminate your clutter hot spots We all have certain spots in our homes that have become magnets for clutter, usually because they provide a convenient, empty, flat surface to pile things on. Walk around your home to determine where the clutter hot spots are, then remove the clutter (toss it in a box or laundry basket for now) and put something beautiful in its place, like a vase or a sculpture. If it’s the dining room table, set it as if you were having a dinner party. This will deter you from using it as a drop zone. Walk around your home with the box you tossed everything into and deposit these items where they belong, either in the garbage or recycle box or stored elsewhere in your house. If they don’t have a proper home, create one. Detaching from sentimental attachment Things that have a story attached to them are often difficult to let go of because of the sentimental attachment. Keep in mind that

the item is not the memory; it simply triggers the memory. It may be beneficial to take a picture of the item and put it in a scrapbook or photo album with a short note telling its story. That way, the memory is preserved without taking up as much space. Another option is to pass along the items to a family member who could put them to good use. Daily de-clutter habit. You brush your teeth every day. You shower every day. Why not de-clutter every day too? Make it a habit, just like the examples I gave, and it will become second-nature. Throughout the day, when you pull something out, take a moment to put it back when you are finished with it. At the end of the day, take a couple of minutes to do a “clean sweep” of your home and put away anything that is out of place. Keep a sticky note somewhere on your way to your bedroom to remind you for the first little while. After doing it for a month, you can take the note down because it will have become a habit – one that will serve you beautifully for the rest of your life. This simple practice can help you cut down on clutter without taking a lot of time and effort.

COLOUR SELECTION

for home interiors by USHEDA AKBAR-SHANKS

IS IT TIME AGAIN TO UPDATE YOUR INTERIORS? Time and tide wait for no man, and it is best to 'go with the flow' when it comes to Interior Design. To create and re-create our Aesthetic environment is crucial to keeping the dream alive. Dream big this Fall and look to more personal palettes for inspiration.

CLASSIC NEUTRALS

Classic neutrals are sizzling hot this season, and have been so for the past year. A Classic neutral is a great choice for the entire home, especially if it is an open concept plan. This uniformity of colour throughout is conducive to good flow. It is easier on the eye, and brings attention to art work, accent furniture and other details such as millwork, books or windows. Many open concept homes now have large windows. Particularly in lots which have a nice view of a pond or forest, the walls should be more subdued and not detract from the view. Though feature walls are still popular, the days of a dark feature wall amidst lighter colours are gone. Very dark walls with contrasting light trim is also passĂŠ. The only exception would be Black. A little retreat or den in black can serve as a cozy space to re-group and relax with a good book. Light grey with warm undertones is an excellent transitional colour. It is dark enough to contrast with off white or cream, and still look sophisticated. A light taupe shade with just a hint of cream works well with any decor. Ranging from yellowy creams to light grays trendy neutrals encompass a broad spectrum. Usually there are no undertones like pinks, yellows, greens or blues, making them a perfect backdrop for colourful ornaments, and art work. Alternatively, for those wanting to create a calmer interior, use paler hues and other neutrals. BRIGHT & BOLD

Bright and bold is not for everyone, but can certainly alter the mood of a room instantly! From older Estate homes to small apartments, bold splashes of colour can add an element of daring and fun to an otherwise boring scenario. Express your personal style with trendy colours, knowing that they can be changed again as needed. 32

Edm Reno 08-2013.indd 32

2013-08-21 5:09 PM

Whether your choice is vibrant, dramatic, tranquil or fun any of the colours on the wheel can be used to create and express your personal style. It is a universal fact that colour, specifically paint, is the most inexpensive and versatile solution to transform your interiors. The onset of a new season is the perfect time to change wall colour. Choose a new colour scheme by being 'unpredictable'. If you like certain popular colour combinations and you are seeing it everywhere, then it may be advisable to try something different. Being too predictable with colour is boring.

colour with mascara and eye liner adds wow factor. A made up face does not look 'finished' until all the elements are addressed. A polished look takes into account the complexity of application, with special attention to colour and style. The key to transforming your home with colour is to create a mood or feel for the space. What mood you create will depend on your source of Inspiration. Look for anchor points or 'permanent' fixtures in your home. For instance, antique furniture or expensive artwork cannot be replaced because they do not go with your wall colour. Work around things you cannot change and keep adding decor as needed. There is no cookie cutter formula for using colour in your home. Use your imagination, and then edit. Keep in mind that colour is one of the quickest and most cost effective ways to create new ambiance in your home.

COLOUR LAYERING & COMPLEXITY

Unless you are using a classic combination of colours such as navy, beige, white and gold avoid clichaic combinations. Many combinations have become classic because they work so well together, and there is no need to re-invent the wheel. Other combinations may be trendy, but lack depth and complexity. These should be a embellished with secondary textures and colours. A good example would be taupe and clay green. Quite a boring combination on their own, but mixing in subtle layers of reds, blues and purples can look spectacular. A good analogy would be make-up artistry. Just foundation is basic, but adding lipstick and blush adds new dimension. Accentuating existing eye

SHELL BUSEY: ASK A PRO

Foggy windows by SHELL BUSEY

I’VE RECEIVED MANY INQUIRIES TO MY OFFICE FROM

homeowners who are concerned with foggy windows. What they are noticing is their windows are foggy because the sealed glass unit (dual pane glass) has been compromised, which has allowed water vapour to get inside of the window pane, showing up as moisture or condensation on the inside of the sealed glass unit. During my 50+ years in the home improvement industry, I’ve seen my fair share of products come on the market that do not work as advertised. You may have heard or seen advertising for window ‘restoration’ services that in some cases offer a 10 year warranty or longer. This service is promoted as a less-expensive and less disruptive way to solve the problem of foggy windows when compared to insulated glass or total window replacement. Typically these companies will drill small holes in the corners of the window glass, through these holes they push compressed air through the window for a period of time to remove the existing moisture. Then they install valves in the holes they’ve drilled to allow any moisture that may get inside of the window glass to escape.

Folks, let me explain to you why this process is fundamentally flawed. A glass window sealed unit is exactly that, a sealed unit. No air or moisture is supposed to get in between the panes of glass. If you noticed moisture on the inside of your sealed unit has failed then it is time to replace the widow sealed unit or entire window including the frame. By design a window sealed unit is meant to keep all air and moisture outside of the window glass. When sealed units are made, they are manufactured in a controlled factory environment to ensure the sealed unit is air sealed. It is important to

THE ONLY WAY TO PROPERLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF FOGGY WINDOWS IS TO HAVE NEW WINDOW GLASS INSTALLED (I ALWAYS RECOMMEND GOING WITH ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOW GLASS, SUCH AS LOW E SQUARED WITH ARGON GAS) OR HAVE A NEW WINDOW INSTALLED

34 HOME DÉCOR AND RENOVATIONS SEP - OCT 2013

Edm Reno 08-2013.indd 34

2013-08-21 5:09 PM

When purchasing new window glass sealed units or new windows including the widow frame, be sure inquire what the warranty covers with respect to both labour and material. We’ve received feedback from customers who had the window defogging process performed on their windows only to notice moisture once again on the inside of the windows glass. Some of these customers attempted to have the window glass restoration process redone and been unsuccessful in their attempt to have their warranties honoured.

note the quality of a factory sealed glass unit cannot be replicated outside of a controlled factory environment. If the sealed unit is allowed to ‘breath’ or vent, it cannot effectively do what job it’s meant to do. The only way to properly solve the problem of foggy windows is to have new window glass installed (I always recommend going with energy efficient window glass, such as Low E Squared with Argon Gas) or have a new window installed, including the window glass and frame, such as an energy efficient vinyl frame window. Replacing your sealed glass units can cost a little more than the window restoration process, but it is the proper way to go about addressing the issue.

Decoding the code by MICHAEL NYIKES

In commercial applications, toilets are exposed to multiple users between cleanings and tend to also be exposed to more frequent misuse, such as soiling the toilet seat and surrounding area. The elongated bowl (typically with an open style toilet seat) reduces the probability of the negative effects of misuse and provides less user exposure to potentially contaminated surfaces. The elongated bowl also has a larger water surface area which helps keep the inside surface of the bowl clean. So from a health and safety standpoint it appears as though an elongated bowl has more benefit in a commercial setting, however for residential use a round bowl seems to be more than adequate.

Q

Future Decoding the Code columns will continue to answer readers’ questions about how the provincial building code affects their projects. Email your questions to me at decodingthecode@gmail.com. Be sure to include which city you live in, as well as your phone number in case I need to follow up with you.

A reader wrote asking whether there are any health and safety benefits to installing a toilet with an elongated bowl versus the traditional round bowl.

A

Interesting question with an interesting answer. Most residential toilets have round bowls, but most commercial toilets have elongated bowls. An elongated bowl is 2 inches (51 mm) longer than a round bowl and the extension is toward the front of the fixture.

THE ELONGATED BOWL (TYPICALLY WITH AN OPEN STYLE TOILET SEAT) REDUCES THE PROBABILITY OF THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MISUSE AND PROVIDES LESS USER EXPOSURE TO POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED SURFACES.

RENOVATIONS OF EXCELLENCE

D

Renovations of Excellence: INDUSTRY EXPERT ADVICE by SALINA YARA HALABI

BEFORE

W

hether working on a full home renovation or just updating one room, any renovation project can be a daunting process – no matter what the size. With over 35 years of successful home renovation experience, Lou Soucy, owner of Renovations of Excellence, has industry knowledge and expertise that is beyond compare. Below, Soucy shares his advice on some Reno questions that may help guide homeowners during their renovation journey.

AFTER | BASEMENT RENOVATIONS

Q When beginning a home renovation what is the biggest obstacle homeowners tend to overlook in the process?

A One obstacle is that people over think the job that is needed. Advice from a neighbour or relation may confuse them more, and then the “TV weekend make over” with 150 carpenters adds even more confusion to the picture! Renovating is not “Rocket Science”! It’s all about common sense. Choose a renovator that has survived the test of time, a little grey is good; one that can help guide you through all the “pit falls” of this stressful process, one that can tell you how the whole process works from design start up to final paint touch ups. Q After 35 years of renovations, what is one key element that has remained constant in all your projects?

A Renovating each and every project as if it were “my own” home and remembering where I came from as a journeymen carpenter - here in Edmonton! I wouldn’t have made it this far if it weren’t for the combined effort of my loyal staff, hardworking trades and state of the art suppliers!

AFTER | KITCHEN RENOVATIONS

Q Having a home that is energy efficient has become more important than ever before. What are a few energysaving additions someone can add to their home during a renovation?

A It’s called “Preventative Maintenance to your home infrastructure”! Listen to what your house is telling you through tell-tale signs: gas/ power bills, cold spots by windows & doors, furnace working all the time, not enough hot water, roof has no snow on it in winter time, wool socks in the basement… Your renovator can diagnose what is needed to repair the problem.
