Hire a professional
T
his is an exciting and busy time of the year for homeowners. The new season brings with it a long list of interior and exterior projects to tackle. These projects may include a new deck, sunroom, rec room, kitchen, bathroom or addition. Regardless of the renovation, the end result will be highly desirable if professional renovators are employed. Professionals offer expert advice, accurate pricing and superior service. Professional renovators possess a proven track record, so make sure to ask for referrals. Legitimate renovators will have no problem providing you with a list of satisfied customers. They will also provide you with a written contract. Remember that trust is not enough. A written contract protects both the renovator and you, the homeowner. Everything is spelled out so that all parties involved know the details of the project, dollar amounts and timelines. A professional renovator will have liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. Although it is unlikely that any property damage will occur during the renovation process, isn’t it nice to know that your professional renovator’s coverage protects you from liability and cost? We consider it important to receive a warranty for all sorts of purchases. Why shouldn’t your renovation be any different? A professional renovation comes with a warranty on labour. Also, professional installation prevents voiding the manufacturers’ warranties on materials and products. Homeowners are encouraged to research their projects well, hire professionals, and get everything down in writing. Much can be learned by visiting the MHBA’s website at www.homebuilders.mb.ca as well as the RenoMark website at www.renomark.ca. Be informed and don’t try to take shortcuts that could end up costing you more in the end. If the job requires a professional, hire a professional and get it done right the first time!

record of a Canadian product whose original design has served its customers trouble-free for nearly 80 years. That product is Weatherwall Windows and Doors and Belva London and business partner, Lara Rykiss, have represented the company in Manitoba for over 18 years. Both attest to the quality and versatility that the system provides to homeowners wanting to make the most of three-season outdoor living. Belva London, former Interior Design professor at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture for 20 years,
has recently incorporated the window system onto her own newly built house in Tuxedo. She and leading Winnipeg architect, Les Stechesen designed a semi-round porch on the back of the bungalow that offers a panoramic view of the double size lot and its artful landscaping. The south-facing porch provides 224 square feet of rest and relaxation space and incorporates ten window units

The radiant heated ceramic tile flooring provides an extra measure of warmth underfoot during spring and fall and a cool sensation when summer sunshine is at its peak. The porch features a dedicated barbeque centre with exterior venting specified to new building codes. Says Belva, “It would not be possible to do this kind of window with glass. It would be way too heavy. These units stay up. You can push them up or down effortlessly and they remain in place. That would never be possible with ordinary glass panels. They would simply fall down and break.” Belva London Weatherwall Windows and Doors frames are made of extruded aluminum. Lara informs that the glazing is a 12 mil. elastovinyl that is an extremely flexible material and that she herself has seen remain flexible at 50 degrees below Celcius. “It is also incredibly strong material that can withstand 350 lbs. of wind pressure. In fact, the windows have been

originally designed to withstand hurricane winds in Florida.” The Weatherwall system lets in a tremendous amount of light and air. Glass windows can only be opened up to 50%, unlike Belva London Weatherwall Windows and Doors which open up to 75%. Moreover, the windows and doors can open either to the bottom or to the top or both, which allows you to ensure that the breeze is where you are,” adds Lara. If you are eating in your space, you can open the windows from the top and bottom, allowing airflow without your napkins blowing off the table. Many customers do the installation themselves because it is very easy says Belva. “The windows are extremely light and if you can use a drill and a level, you can likely do the installation yourself. The units come assembled and are simply pushed into the opening from the outside and secured with colour matched, tapping screws. Others choose to hire a contractor, but it doesn’t take much time for a contractor to install it either, so costs a re usually very reasonable.” The versatility of Weatherwall Windows and Doors is remarkable not only responding to the design of a rectangular or semi-round porch like Belva’s but are also suitable for standalone gazebos or trailer additions. Belva explains that the product’s lightweight construction is especially important in cottage country, for example, where a lot of ground settling occurs and where any additional
weight would hasten the process. “We source our windows from the factory located in Wallaceburg, Ontario and our products are backed by a 10 year limited factory warranty on everything but the screen. The windows are custom made to accommodate the clients’ rough openings and the frames are available in Bronze, White, Sandstone and Clay, the newest colour choice.” Lara adds, “Clay is new this year and it’s the first time in our history with the company, which is almost 19 years, that they’ve changed anything. They’ve been making it the same way for 80 years. It’s an amazing product that people can feel comfortable purchasing because it really works.” to see how beautiful and effective the belva london weatherwall windows and doors system can be, lara invites Manitoba renovation and design readers to set up an appointment by calling 204.771.5533 or by sending an email to weatherwall@mts.net. jun - jul 2013 home décor and renovations 15

spring is finally here by Mike Moore,
President, MAnitoBA HoMe Builders’ AssociAtion
it’s taken a while, a very long while, but it appears as though
we can actually go outdoors and see whatever havoc winter and weather has played on our house. After being cooped up for too many months, it’s time to enjoy ourselves outdoors and take full advantage of the opportunities presented to us. It looked a little dreary for a while but recent rainfall has greened our yards and so we can see hope on the horizon. Generally, the first thing you see when you walk out your back door should be your deck or patio. If you don’t have one, I’d recommend building one. We’ve been fortunate the last couple of years with relatively mosquito-free summers, but we all know that won’t last forever, so a little separation from the lawn can be a good thing. Whether you want to create a single level patio or a multi-level deck, the possibilities are endless. A beautiful patio space allows you to expand or contract as you please and use a wide array of materials for your surface. Whether it be stones, wood, court surface, concrete or something else, you can really take full advantage of whatever space you have. A single surface also permits you to move furniture and appliances wherever you wish without having to worry about space. It’s almost like creating a new patio every time you re-decorate. A multi-level outdoor structure allows various activities but also a bit of separation and privacy. One area or level could be designed for lounging; whether it be reading, socializing or just stretching out in the sun. Another could be for eating, perhaps a small table and chairs under an umbrella. The barbeque, a staple in any Manitoba home in the summer or all year, can be found close by. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to cooking areas. From the simple grill to the massive barbeque to ovens, your deck can become a veritable outdoor kitchen paradise. On the third level, we
find the hot tub. Inexpensive to maintain, perfect for entertaining or just relaxing, and fully operational all year; they are the perfect complement to the outdoor living space. Of course, there were plenty of other amenities available that would further enhance the back yard living experience. Fire places or fire pits, lighting, sound systems, propane heaters, games area and a portable bar are just some of the ideas presented here. Beside the deck or as an extension, one should consider a sunroom or seasonal living space as a viable option. Gazebos continue to be very popular. Your yard can be whatever you make it to be. There are absolutely beautiful landscaping designs, recreational areas, perfect lawns, flowers, shrubs, trees and countless other options to make your yard your own paradise. For those who wish to cut back on the grass cutting while enhancing their recreational lifestyle, there are plenty of possibilities available when it comes to installing a pool. Of course, there is lots of other renovation and repair work to be done. That chain-link fence could use re-setting as it has moved over the years. The wood fence has lost its colour. It’s time to shake up the garden and look at some of the spectacular plants we have to choose from in Manitoba. Large brown spots on the lawn do not add character; they need an overhaul. There is no shortage of projects to maximize our outdoor living spaces. However, don’t be overwhelmed by the magnitude of possibilities. One at a time, attack the priorities first. Better yet, it’s a nice day today so maybe I’ll pour myself a cold one and think about how fabulous everything is going to look.

GARAGE RESCUE
Garage Rescue The storage solutions hero by MARGARET ANNE FEHR
S
eems like one area of the house that continues to get ‘no respect’ is the garage. Overlooked and underappreciated, it’s a space that when seen from the right perspective is loaded with potential. Fortunately, that’s exactly how Len Hoey, owner of Garage Rescue sees it. “Typically, the garage has always been something of a dumping zone. Homeowners spend a fortune on the interior of the home then turn their attention to decks and landscaping yet the garage never seems to get its rightful due.” That’s really an oversight says Len since improvements within the garage are some of the least expensive in terms of investment and can net sizable increase in the value of your home when it’s time to sell - not to mention greatly increase the enjoyment of your home by ensuring there is space to comfortably park vehicles and have organized storage for both
seasonal and everyday use items. Garage Rescue specializes in the supply and installation of organizational products including overhead storage, wall-mounted storage, work benches, cabinetry and concrete floor coatings coupled with services that include design, interior finishing, installation, project management and junk removal. “We are constantly on the lookout for the best in new storage products to serve our customers. We recently added the very innovative Monkey Bars ™ Shelf/Rack storage system which provides overhead shelf storage with extensive rack storage below. No other product is as versatile or provides as much storage in as small a footprint.” Len emphasizes that there is an abundance of storage space available on garage walls and ceilings that can be properly utilized to free up valuable floor space. “Most garages have plenty of room to park vehicles, however, most often that space is on the ceiling because the floor is cluttered, we can fix that” Garage Rescue was started in 2011

after Len concluded a successful career as an executive with a leading Winnipeg company. The light bulb moment that sparked the creation of Garage Rescue came when he was going through the long overdue task of cleaning out his own garage and was unimpressed by the quality of storage products available locally. ‘That’s when I started my research on available products, ordered them and was really happy with the quality and the job they did. I went on to strike a deal with the manufacturers of these products to represent them in the Manitoba market.” So far, it’s been an interesting cross section of customers for the company. “The customer base is broader than I thought it would be,” says Len. “From the single parent who was just tired of the garage being so disorganized, to the car enthusiast looking for a theme garage to very active families who just don’t have the time to do it themselves.” “I really enjoy dealing directly with customers and helping them solve their storage issues. The demand for our services continues to grow steadily and the amount of referrals we receive tell us we are doing right by our customers.” For more information about Garage Rescue products and services consult www.garagerescue.ca and book a free ‘in garage’ consultation.

Choosing the Right PatteRn If your furnishings and décor are already complete, then you want to select a paper that complements the existing colour and style as well as the size and shape of the room being wallpapered. If there are already other patterns present in the area then be sure to choose a harmonizing scale. In terms of the room to be wallpapered, keep in mind that horizontal patterns will make a room appear wider, and vertical patterns will make ceilings feel taller. WheRe to WallPaPeR In the ‘70s, your house wasn’t quite up to par unless you covered every square inch of every wall with wallpaper. Today that’s hardly the case —however if you’re using it in a smaller space such as a powder room, I still say to go for it. One feature wall is usually all you need to make a room pop, like behind the bed in a bedroom. Also, consider wallpapering the ceiling to create high impact and style. MeasuRing foR WallPaPeR Measure your walls carefully to calculate the amount of paper you’ll need to cover the desired area. Standard rolls measure 11 yards in length, 20.5 inches in width, and wide width rolls are sometimes available which are the same length but measure 27 inches in width. I always recommend adding one extra roll to the amount you require just in case. The experts where you’re buying the material should be able to assist in the calculations to be sure.

Decked out!
Expert Paul LaFrance helps you design the perfect deck by heather ryan
With summer just around, the corner it’s a good time to begin planning how to make the most of your outdoor space when the warmer weather finally arrives. Having a fabulous deck where you can enjoy the sunshine, fire up the barbecue and kick back and relax with family and friends will likely be at the centre of your backyard plans. So, who better to ask about deck building than one of Canada’s experts in the field Paul Lafrance, creator, owner and CEO of Cutting Edge Construction and Design
in Pickering, ON – who has more than 15 years of experience in generating state-of-the-art custom deck designs? He’s also the host of HGTV’s Decked Out, Deck Wars and new show Disaster Decks. When it comes to deck design, Lafrance says he doesn’t go by trends. “There are no elements of design that are hot or cold for me. I would never design based on trends such as multiple levels, covered barbecue nooks or planters, to name a few. While I love those features, my designs are all very personal to the homeowner. Each individual deck design is something that is designed specifically for that homeowner, for that house,” he says. For instance, looking at one design element – exposure to

6/7/13 3:42:31 PM
Each individuaL dEck dEsign is somEthing that is dEsignEd sPEciFicaLLy For that homEownEr, For that housE the sun – “you can have the same house, with the same type of people, one yard faces north and the other south, those are two entirely different designs right there, as the sun will affect each yard in a different way.” “There are so many incredible new products out on the market that didn’t exist in years past, as more and more people are realizing the potential of their backyards,” Lafrance says. From water features and gas fire pits, to retractable awnings – there are seemingly endless choices to personalize a backyard space. However, he says the one item that stands out above the rest is lighting. “Lighting systems are making the outdoor living space something that you can enjoy all week long as opposed to the traditional daytime use on the weekend. It’s breaking those boundaries and allowing the space to take on an entirely different emotional feel.” Based on his years of deck design experience, Lafrance has discovered “the number one most overlooked item is the one that’s hard to miss – the sun!” When you’re designing your deck, and ultimately your outdoor space, consider whether you’re a sun person or a shade person? “Most people want the option of both,” he says. “If shade elements aren’t incorporated, you can end up with a deck that you don’t want to go anywhere near when the temperature soars, during the season that you most want to be outside.” Another piece of advice to homeowners is to consider having the deck designed by a professional. His company does for clients across North America. “Traditionally, the deck is seen as a box with a space for a barbecue and a table. I’m constantly amazed by what people accept as a deck, when the demands for design inside the house are so high. This is an important part of the house, people! My philosophy is dream big, think outside the box, and dare to imagine the possibilities for your own patch of grass.” This is something a professional can do, and he also suggests getting a 3-D design, which “ensures the deck gives you the oasis you really want, as opposed to just a square box with the corners cut off. Check out my website for more on this (cuttingedgedesign.ca).” Lafrance says doing it yourself or having it professionally done depends entirely on the homeowner. “If you are lucky enough to have the skills and the time to build your own deck, that’s a hugely rewarding thing. In reality, not everyone has the skill set it requires to build a deck on their own, and noble attempts can lead to disaster decks. Equally as often, homeowners who are deck savvy bite off more than they can chew when it comes to the amount of time a DIY deck takes to complete.” Building a deck can take a lot of work so a skilled contractor can be a huge asset. If you do decide to use a professional,
Lafrance urges you to do the research and get referrals when hiring a contractor because if they sound too good to be true, they often are. “For me, whether you decide to build it yourself or if you hire a professional, what it really boils down to is the design,” he says. “If you create the same old square box design that’s been a standard on homes for years, that clearly has limited appeal. You want people to see your deck and say, ‘Wow you have completely transformed this space!’ It should end up being a retreat, not a boring space you need to be rescued from.” Along with the design, you’ll also want to consider the materials you’ll use for the deck. “Composite deck boards are the most popular material being used for deck building, simply because of the ultra-low maintenance factor. Products such as pressure treated wood require a lot of maintenance, including frequent sanding and staining, and what may have started out as your retreat can very quickly turn into an ongoing stress that you never intended to take on. Composite is a worry-free product that can withstand the wear-and-tear of Mother Nature and a surplus of foot traffic.” Incorporating an outdoor fourseason room could prove to be an invaluable addition for climates like ours that experience long winters. A four-season room can be as simple as a small pathway to a 10-ft.- by-10-ft. heated outdoor structure that would allow you to have a space where you could escape the house all year-round even in the middle of January, Lafrance says. “By building these quiet spaces 20 feet from the backdoor, you can feel connected to your yard and de-stress no matter what the weather’s like.” Watch disaster decks tuesday’s at 10 p.m. on hGtV. jun - jul 2013 home décor and renovations 25

One Of the mOst exciting parts Of the design
process (at least for us) is the development of a strategy for a new project. This is when the designer creates a ‘story line,’ an identity that the project will suggest to its users once it is finished and experienced.
Conceptually, there is a limitless number of possible ‘big ideas’ that can be explored and developed in design. When we decide on a new project’s concept, we look to

influencing agents such as, but not limited to; budget, surrounding area, client needs, wants & personality, desired and/or current lifestyle, the existing architecture, image, etc. Once the strategy for the design has been established, we proceed with research (what does it mean to communicate the concept) through programming and space planning (exploring the way the space will function and how one moves through and uses the space). Asking the question - do all these proposed design ideas support the story and desired experience we are looking to achieve? Architectural design, material and finish selection, detailing, just to name a few. Everything we explore, select & design should pass through the filter of the ‘big idea.’ This is similar to how one prepares a research paper or when writing a book. One makes a claim, writes a thesis statement and then develops a case

and a body of written work that supports the claim. Like a paper or book, space can tell a story. And it is our job to make sure that the overall atmosphere is consistent, coherent and understood by all. 2012 spring Lottery Home – gLamour takes guts 4545 Roblin boulevaRd
For the 2012 HSC Lottery Home we took a ‘go big or go home’ position and designed a luxurious space we fondly refer to as ‘Little Hollywood on the Prairie.’ In a city where neutral reigns, this home celebrates colour (prints, patterns, texture, scale… and whimsy). With this home submission, we decided to push some aesthetic and lifestyle boundaries, to provoke thought and create a home that was fantastical and unlike any show home Winnipeg has ever seen! We played with a bright, bold colour palette, layered textures and prints and emphasized a living lifestyle of gluttonous entertaining. jun - jul 2013 home décor and renovations 29

Inspired by the location and history of the Tuxedo area, the interior design of this space was primarily developed to acknowledge the look and lifestyle of the 1950’s and 60’s. Throughout the home we consistently expressed simple lines, natural elements and a neutral colour palette that was understated and demure. We used a fresh mix of textures and materials; specifying white washed wood flooring, both stained and painted woodwork, brick feature walls and used layers of tone on tone colours throughout. We played with straight lines + combining materials; metals, wood, tumbled, smooth glass tile, polished surfaces contrasting those that were distressed. One of the most unique features of the home is its ‘U’ shaped floor plan that houses a centralized courtyard.

The fast lane to kitchen renovation nu-life Kitchens saves time and money by Margaret anne Fehr
Doreen anD Marv haD been conteMplating a
renovation to their 80’s style kitchen in the condominium they have been living in for the last six years. Certainly their kitchen was serviceable enough but the plainvanilla type cabinetry lacked the stylistic zip that they were after. “When we moved in, we updated the insides of the cupboards by putting in pull-out shelves to make it easier to get to things but that was about the extent of it,” says Doreen. The couple had handled a full-scale kitchen renovation in a former home and even though the final result turned out fine, they simply didn’t want to deal with a hefty renovation cost and the prolonged down time that a full scale project would involve. “It wasn’t something that we wanted to repeat,” says Doreen. A friend recommended Nu-Life Kitchens after having her own kitchen done and after the couple viewed it and liked what they saw, they contacted Mark Bjornson, co-owner to get things in motion. Building on the ‘good bones’ of the existing kitchen layout meant that structural changes were non-existent. The couple had been doing their homework regarding current kitchen trends and decided that a two-tone kitchen was the way to go, selecting Antique Whitewash uppers and dark Wenge lowers in a flat door profile with soft edge complete with new European hinges. A simple modern stainless steel handle was chosen to complement the look. Sheri Anderson, Nu-Life Kitchens co-owner says, “The thermofoil doors we use are constructed using a process that

consists of applying vinyl material to a high density fibreboard using adhesive, heat and pressure. They are UV protected and they are less expensive than alternative products.” The upper cabinet over the cooktop was modified to allow for an over-therange microwave as well as providing additional cabinet space at the former microwave location. Mark was full of space saving suggestions that netted Doreen more storage within the same cabinet configuration. “I actually got seven new deep drawers within the same plan,” says Doreen, “bringing a total of 11 drawers in all.” Pots and pans drawers were added on either side of the stove and are equipped with full extension soft close slides for fingertip access to all kitchen paraphernalia. A light valance was added to the bottom of all upper cabinets to conceal under-cabinet lighting contributing to an overall sleek, uncomplicated look. Doreen enjoyed selecting finishing touches to the kitchen décor that included a light-coloured Caesarstone countertop with contrasting speckle throughout. An undermount Siligranite sink in a biscuit colour matching the speckled countertop pattern was a natural fit along with the backsplash of matte and shiny elongated tiles that provide a riot of texture and sheen. Doreen and Marv are so glad they chose the Nu-Life Kitchens option to revive their kitchen instead of going the full renovation route. “We rate them 100 per cent in terms of satisfaction level,”

Manitoba Home Builders Association (MBHA) 75th year of service to the community, it seemed entirely appropriate with the association’s track record to ‘pay it forward’ by sponsoring and building two Habitat for Humanity homes in St. Vital. its own celebrating 25 years of providing low-income families an opportunity to purchase affordable housing. “The two milestone anniversaries occurring in the same year make for a good fit to accomplish a first for the association by sponsoring and building two homes for Habitat Manitoba,” says Michael Moore, MBHA President. With 75 years of community service, Manitoba Home Builders Association has forged professional relationships with an impressive list of builders, installers and retail suppliers, among them Kitchen Craft Cabinetry. The opportunity to contribute to the Habitat for Humanity program and MHBA strongly resonated with the Kitchen Craft management team for a number of reasons says out-going General Manager, Billy Reimer. “First of all, we are members of the Manitoba Home Builders Association and we support them. Secondly, Kitchen Craft is part of MasterBrand Cabinets Inc., North America’s largest cabinet corporation and Habitat for Humanity is one of our chosen charities, so that gave us further incentive. And finally, as a local company we wanted to engage in a team building exercise that our office people, sales staff and managers, who don’t typically handle installations, could do together.”

“Kitchen craft has provided and installed cabinets for Habitat homes for years. This time they did things a bit differently in terms of doing the install for free while carrying out their team building exercise.”
So with those three solid reasons, Kitchen Craft was in. On April 19th, two four-member teams donned tool belts to donate their time and expertise to install kitchen and bathroom cabinetry in two Habitat homes on Moore Avenue. John Anderlum, incoming General Manager comments, “We had a little bit of a unofficial competition as to which team could finish first and that made it more fun at the same time.” From all accounts, the installation day proceeded without a hitch with both teams receiving a hands-on, awareness-raising experience. Walter Doerksen, sales associate and Habitat for Humanity liaison, has already seen the positive effects of the installation translate back into the workplace. “We find ourselves referring back to that day in a light-hearted, joking way and about how our managers seemed a little bit out of their element. The common working experience made us see ourselves as a team which is exactly what we hoped to accomplish.” Walter adds that he has gained a new appreciation for the Kitchen Craft installers and some of the challenges they often encounter. “There are always unique obstacles and it gives great appreciation for the guys that are working with us.” John sees the value of the experience in gaining the ‘big picture’ view. “It comes down to a fuller appreciation of what goes into a kitchen and how you’ve got to be able to design it, sell it, order it correctly, and install it properly in the field. It is really a full process and it gives a greater appreciation for all of the intergral steps of that process.”
Kitchen Craft is undergoing a significant change in its organizational history as John is set to replace retiring Billy Reimer as general manager in a career that has spanned over 30 years. I appreciate that I was able to work on that kitchen with him and to realize Billy’s level of contribution to the company and the community at large. I realize that I’ve got some big shoes to fill.” Linda Peters, Vice-President, Program Delivery for Habitat for Humanity Manitoba applauds Kitchen Craft for the creative way they accomplished their goals. “Kitchen Craft has provided and installed cabinets for Habitat homes for years. This time they did things a bit differently in terms of doing the install for free while carrying out their team building exercise.” “Habitat is appreciative of any offerings from a manufacturing company like Kitchen Craft because it allows us to build these homes much more affordably which is our ongoing goal.”

1 To create interest on the wall of the 100 of vanity space, we used multiple heights, depths, textures and colours. 2 The graphic bronze dimensional accent tiles frame the mirror and the tile size determines the space needed.
3 The drawer units on the vanity are the same width as and line up with the accent tiles, leaving the balance area between for the sink. The vanity is finished in a neutral black lacquer.
As this is an exterior wall, we built a small 1/2 wall behind the sink to house 4
the wall mounted faucets. This 1/2 wall is finished in a recycled iridescent pewter glass tile that shimmers with beautiful bronze tone as one moves through the space. 5 The sink area features a rectangular bronze vessel sink.
6 The light coloured quartz counter top matches the other fixtures for continuity. 7 The window is dressed with an aluminum shutter which not only provides the necessary privacy but fills the space between the wall and the tile detail to create a seamless look.

A calmer home in 5 steps by RAchAel KAlinsKy
spRing hAs finAlly ARRived, And with wARmeR
weather and longer days often comes the urge to purge. Here are five simple steps to help you de-clutter, create a calmer home and let the positive energy flow back into the spaces we’ve been hibernating in all winter long. 1 Prepare your organizing tools. Just like any project or recipe, we need the necessary tools or ingredients before we can get started. The same goes for getting organized. here are my key ingredients for a successful de-cluttering session:
Black bags for garbage Blue bags or bin for recycling Clear bags or recycled boxes for items to be donated Two large bins or boxes: ›› One to act as a “Maybe bin” for those items that you’re struggling to make a decision on ›› The other to act as a “Relocate bin” for items that belong in another room – the key to staying focused is to not leave the room you’re working on until it’s complete › Marker and role of masking tape ›› To label your bins or make reminder notes on items such as “replace button” or “return to store.” › › › ›
2 Keep only the Items you USE or LOVE. Your possessions should either serve a purpose or reflect who you are, and everything should have its place. As you begin the de-cluttering process, you should unquestionably get rid of anything that’s collecting dust, feels uncomfortable, doesn’t fit, doesn’t work, or creates a negative emotion – leaving only the items you use or love. 3 Start with your storage areas. We in the organizing profession often advise our clients to pick an area and start small. While this is very true, I also suggest starting with storage areas such as the basement, garage, or that spare room that’s become the “dumping ground.” Our storage areas are often the place where things we don’t use or love end up, therefore they tend to be easier items to make decisions on and help us get into the de-cluttering groove.
Secondly, our storage areas are intended for items we don’t use regularly, such as seasonal clothing, sporting gear, luggage and extra household supplies. Getting rid of the unnecessary makes space for the items that should filter into storage as we move onto de-cluttering the rest of the home. 4 Create a place for everything. Now that you’ve gotten rid of all the items you no longer use or love, it’s time to create a “home” for everything that’s left. Install a hook to hang your keys as you walk in the door, use baskets to keep like items together, and dedicate a letter tray to consolidate incoming mail, bills to pay and notices to address. Having a home for everything will eliminate the piles from building up again. 5 Deal with it now. Once you’ve de-cluttered and set up systems for where things belong, it’s important to get into the habit of always putting things back. It only takes a second to hang your keys as you walk in the door, put away the clean laundry, or put the kids books/toys back on the shelf. Doing it right away will save you time in the long run and eliminate that nagging and overwhelming feeling that occurs when things start to pile up.

Seven steps to de-cluttering for a move by HELLEN BUTTIGIEG
MOVING IS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE LIST OF MOST PEOPLE’S
3. The no-brainers Go through your
stressful situations. But a little organization goes a long way in alleviating the stress and making the move go smoothly. I’m happy to share some simple steps that will help you de-clutter your current home so you can enjoy your new home with a clean slate:
house one room at a time and get rid of the no-brainers first. No-brainers are items you don’t have to think twice about letting go of, like torn towels, chipped plates and broken electronics (if you haven’t fixed them by now, trust me, you probably never will). Do this every day, even if it’s just for just 15 minutes, until the task is complete. This is a great way to warm up your de-cluttering muscles and will give you an immediate sense of accomplishment and motivate you to tackle the tougher stuff.
1. Start now Our tendency is to put it off until packing time,
but most people are in a time crunch at that point, and will often put things in a box to deal with ‘later’. Remember that you are paying for each item you move, not only in the time it takes to pack and unpack it, but also by the space it takes up in the moving truck. Why pay to move something you don’t really need? You’ll be busy when you move into your new home, and will probably put off going through those ‘deal with them later’ boxes indefinitely; believe me, when I work with clients, I come across unpacked boxes that have been sitting in the basement or garage for several years after a move. 2. Pictures Take pictures of all the large items you
know will not work or fit in your next home and post them on one of the resale sites online, like Kijiji, Craigslist or Ebay. You can put the extra money you earn towards your moving expenses and perhaps some pieces that fit the new place much better than your old stuff. And the nice thing about photographing them in the first place is that, if you have any sentimental attachment to the items you are selling, you can always use the pictures to trigger the memories.
SET UP YOUR SUPPLIES IN ADVANCE. FOR THE DECLUTTERING PROCESS, YOU WILL NEED BINS, STICKY NOTES (FOR LABELING) AND GARBAGE BAGS.
4. Research Do some research ahead
of time and decide where you will take your discarded items. Although some things will be garbage, most items can be donated or recycled. You will be motivated to let go of more things if you know they will be going to a cause that you believe in or disposed of in a way that doesn’t hurt the environment. Could a local women’s shelter make better use of the clothes you never wear? Find the closest drop-off location where your unused electronics can be reused or recycled safely (do an online search – there are hundreds of locations). 5. Fight the ‘what if I need it someday’ fear If you haven’t used it in a year, chances are you never will. For example, we wear only 20 per cent of our clothes 80 per cent of the time. If in doubt, toss it out (or donate/sell it). On the off-chance you do need it months from now, you can always replace it, but chances are you’ll never look back. If you keep everything because of this fear, it will probably cost you much more in time, money and stress than it would to replace it.

6/7/13 3:43:00 PM
6. Be prepared: Set up your supplies in advance. For the
de-cluttering process, you will need bins, sticky notes (for labeling) and garbage bags. Use bins to do the initial sort; label them ‘donate’, ‘sell’, ‘recycle,’ ‘toss’ and ‘keep’. When the bins get full, transfer the contents into bags. Use clear bags for items that will be donated and opaque bags for garbage, so there’s no confusion. Arrange for a charity to come and pick up the donations or drop them off yourself before the end of the week (you can always go back again as you accumulate more items to donate). Give yourself a deadline on the ‘sell’ items and have a plan for the items that don’t sell (i.e. donate). Transfer the ‘keep’ items directly into the moving boxes.
We’ll help you organize your space... then fill it with the most beautiful, unique items.
7. Get the whole family involved: Everyone should make
decisions on their own things, when it comes to determining what to keep and what to let go of. But a little competition never hurt, so make a game of the de-cluttering process. Set a timer, give everyone a bin, and put some up-beat music on to make it fun. Choose a token prize for the winner who got rid of the most items and a reward for the entire family for the effort each member put in.

Where do you find perfectly manicured turf that makes you green with envy? If your mind quickly races to visions of the fairways and greens of your local golf course, you are not alone. It’s not coincidence that these acres of grass remain green and healthy spring, summer, and fall. Golf course superintendents know that core aeration is a vital component in any lawn care plan. If annual aeration is a key in the success of healthy turf at the best golf courses, it makes sense that you should make it part of your lawn care plan. Core aeration effectively “opens the pores” of compacted soils and reduces unhealthy thatch buildup. Compaction and thatch are the primary obstacles that keep nutrients, water, and air from reaching the root structure. Remember, it’s the health of what’s hidden below the surface that determines the appearance of the lush green lawn that we all enjoy. Water and nutrients are not intended for the green upper portion of your grass plants. Core aeration allows your irrigation and fertilizer investment to truly go further for you. You will easily recover the cost of the core aeration through a lower water bill. Every rainfall will penetrate deeper into your lawn resulting in less watering, better results from your program, and Add aeration a more vibrant lawn. It’s a for only common sense practice that works! Less watering! Smart decision! Maximum performance!

Also, we had a patio put in last fall so the entire area is much more defined.” “Anyone who has come here and seen the sunroom, they all think it looks wonderful and of course they want to know who did it and we’re happy to say it was Glastar Sunrooms. Planning guide for
home technology by lAurence rosenberg AccurAte technology group

may have questions when it comes to building or remodeling your home. Whether remodeling your home or simply installing a home entertainment system, it’s important to hire a Technology Contractor (A/V Design Specialist) who will get the job done properly. In many construction trades, most people (including electricians) are unfamiliar with the new products and technologies that are available for

a low voltage system, or technologies outside their core expertise. It is important to plan your home’s technology infrastructure early and know enough to ask the right questions and make educated decisions. Home Control – The process of home automation works by making everything in the house that can be automatically controlled using technology do the jobs that we would normally do manually. It is much easier to install home automation in a home while it is being renovated since you may have the ability to put things inside the walls to save space. If your home is already finished, you can still have home automation done in a less-intrusive way through the use of wireless technology. Wired systems are generally more robust than wireless, but wireless technology has come a long way. The most common automated systems are entertainment, climate, lighting and shades, security and home networks. The controller (to control all of these systems) is the most important piece of the home control automation puzzle. Controllers are the devices you will use and they can range from the traditional hand-held remote control, to keypad devices, all the way to touch-screen interfaces with customized designs. The more advanced the device becomes, the simpler the operation of your various subsystems. Replacing all remotes with one controller is the quickest way to enjoying your home entertainment.

home control refers to technologies that can link and control all the equipment and systems in your home. Imagine having one controller that can:
›› Automatically turn off all the TVs in the house when the kids are doing their homework. ›› Alert you that the garage door is open and then let you close it from your iPhone ›› Manage your lights, window coverings and thermostats to reduce your energy bills ›› Monitor and arm your security system, lights and security cameras anywhere you are ›› View your home from your office or mobile device. As technology in the 21st century keeps evolving, it is increasingly necessary to have your home wired properly. Structured wiring refers to running cables through the walls of your home that can carry all of the different signals required to integrate computer networks, home entertainment systems, cable or satellite TV, telephone, climate control and even home security systems, all operated by a central control or remotely through the Internet. What technology you want in your home will be strictly controlled by the wiring infrastructure you install. Get the wiring right and everything else is easy. Incorporating technology in your renovation plans does take some forethought and planning, however,
in the end, during renovations is the opportune time to consider this addition. Taking control of your lifestyle and the various systems in your home is much easier and more affordable than ever.

Q
If Manitoba implements a weed control ban, what exactly, can the public expect?
Q
How will homeowner’s be able to control weeds if the more common weed control products are banned? If Manitoba follows some of the other provinces
virtually no effective means of controlling chinch bugs and sod webworm. Insecticidal soaps are minimally effective and require extremely high volumes of product and time, particularly if the problem covers several square feet. Most homeowners do not become aware of the problem in their lawn until the insect populations and damage are well beyond the opportunity to spot treat or control with ease. Chinch bugs will continue to lay eggs, spawning multiple generations each summer. Chinch bug damage will be devastating without a means of control. Chinch bugs and cutworms have been the primary cause of devastation in eastern provinces effectively destroying entire lawns in just one summer.
At the moment, this is an open question. Minister Mackintosh has indicated that he would like to see a ‘made in Manitoba solution’. We’re not exactly sure what that means. Provinces to the east have enacted bans that no longer allow for any conventional pesticides to be used. The alternative pesticides that these provinces have kept on their list of ‘permitted’ pesticides is extremely limited. They are very expensive and are far less effective.
to the east, it is likely that the only viable commercial weed control product that will be permitted is a product called Fiesta. Other, end use products sold by hardware stores will be similar to Fiesta. Fiesta is an iron based product. It kills weeds by effectively overdosing them with iron. Weeds cannot handle high levels of iron and die as a result. Grass can tolerate high levels of iron. Abundant levels of iron will create a very quick darkening effect on the lawn. With spot treatments, the affected area, including both the grass and weed, will turn black. The grass will return to it’s normal colour within a few days and the weed will shrivel up and die. The cost of Fiesta, and other similar, over-the-counter products is extremely high. These products are also either not effective, or minimally effective on other lawn weeds such as plantain. 74 home décor and renovations jun - jul 2013

Q
Will lawn care companies still be offering lawn care programs if a ban comes into place? We do not yet know
what the details of a ban will be. The landscape industry has suggested that the application of pesticides be limited to licensed professionals. If an all-out ban is put into place, lawn care companies will continue to offer lawn care programs, however, the cost of those lawn care programs will increase dramatically. Homeowners will also have to come to terms with the fact that their weed control results will not be guaranteed to the extent they were before. Attitudes towards our lawns and the weeds in it, will simply have to change. Complete weed control will be very difficult, expensive, and labour intensive to achieve.
Q
Why is the Manitoba government considering a pesticide ban in the first place? Pesticides are tested and
regulated by Health Canada. Health Canada is charged with the protection of all Canadians including our ecosystems and the unborn. Like medicines and drugs, all pesticides must be rigorously tested and studied. Before being approved for use, all pesticides must be deemed safe when used according to label directions. The pesticides being considered for the ban, have been used worldwide, safely extensively, and effectively for over 65 years. They are scientifically proven to be safe and continue to be studied and deemed safe by Health Canada, the Environmental Protection Agency, and The World Health Organization. The ban is purely motivated by politics, not science.
Q
When will the Pesticide Ban take effect? Minister Mackintosh had
indicated that his office intended to make an announcement this spring. The Department of Conservation initiated a public consultation process that ended last October. Since then, little has been
heard from the Minister’s office. It is not known when an announcement will be made. Minister Mackintosh has indicated that if and when a ban is implemented, it would be phased in. Exactly what that timeline is, is still unknown.
Q
Could this be my last chance to effectively control weeds in my lawn? It could
be. It would be advisable to control your weeds now, while you can still do so cost effectively and thoroughly.

Celebrate summer in style by aleXanDra assaF photography by stephani buchman
Finally, the warm weather is here!
And I bet you can’t wait to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. I am going to share some easy ideas about how you can rev-up your outdoor space and transform it into an ideal spot for lounging or entertaining. 1. insiDe OUt
The main design concept about “summerizing” your space is to bring the indoors out. Start by choosing items from inside your home that make you feel comfortable, such as a woven rug or a beautiful vase. By doing this, you will add some luxury and relaxation to your outdoor “dream” space.

Look for fabrics and cushions that are pleasant to sit on, like cottons or linens. They need to be as comfortable as your indoor fabrics, in fact even more so 2. DarK FUrnitUre
Save the bright plastic furniture for the beach or cottage dock. Select furniture with rich dark earth tones that you would normally have in your living room. Brown, grey, or wood furniture will ground the space, making the furniture feel substantial and permanent. If you have a wooden kitchen table and chairs hiding away in your home, consider using them as your outdoor dining set. You can protect your furniture from the elements by using a heavy duty cover or tarp.
fabric to make an awning. It is a wonderful way to keep off the mid-day sun, and it creates the illusion of a romantic ceiling waving in the breeze. If you don’t have a fence, create fabric walls as a solution for lack of privacy. I used a waxed marine cotton fabric that can be left outside all season. 6. aCCessOriZe
The saying is true, it really is all in the details. Have fun and accessorize your outdoor space. Make it feel like you are on holiday in the tropics, by adding Yucca or other plants in big pots. They can be left outside all summer, but will need to be brought in by early fall. Swag a lamp at night to create pendant lighting or be even more romantic, use lots of lanterns with candles. Your outdoor space should be considered as another room in your home – so with a little bit of imagination and by using great items from inside your home, you’ll be sure to enjoy your own outdoor oasis this summer!
3. COttOn FaBriCs
Look for fabrics and cushions that are pleasant to sit on, like cottons or linens. They need to be as comfortable as your indoor fabrics, in fact even more so. There is nothing worse than sitting on prickly or sticky fabric when wearing shorts or skirts. Good quality outdoor fabrics are now readily available. They look like indoor fabrics but won’t fade, and will dry quickly after a rain shower. 4. Frame yOUr sPaCe with a rUG
Nothing says luxury like a seamless barefoot transition when walking from inside to outside. It’s always nice to escape to a nice wooden deck. However, take it one step further, by throwing an indoor carpet on the ground. A rug will frame the space and define it as an outdoor room. This Persian wool rug (pictured left) bought at a flea market, is easy to roll up and bring inside at the end of an evening. 5. maKe yOUr sPaCe PriVate
Sometimes the luxury of an outdoor space is about being outside incognito – without the whole neighborhood seeing you. Six square posts that are eight-ft. high, can create the ultimate outdoor room. Use lengths of uncut

The future of lawn care in Winnipeg by tim muys,
Green Blade laWn Care
Well, it’s noW June and as of the print deadline for this article,
there has been no word from the Minister of Conservation and Water Stewardship, Gord Mackintosh, about his intention to implement a made in Manitoba pesticide ban. Dandelions have bloomed into seas of yellow and are already going to seed, yet, Minister Mackintosh remains dead silent on the issue. A recent, widely published and highly criticized survey, conducted in the dead of winter, with a very small sample of respondents, would seem to indicate that a slight majority of Manitoban’s would support a pesticide ban. A survey conducted by a major local newspaper last summer, during noxious weed season, indicated completely the opposite, that most Manitobans did not support a pesticide ban. Of course, one survey was conducted when pesticides were not only needed but were most definitely in use, and obviously seen as a benefit. The other survey, conducted in the dead of winter, showed support for a ban, at a time when most people couldn’t care less, and certainly didn’t see the need for pesticides. Logic would seem to indicate that the more accurate response should be expected at the time the question of the need and benefits of pesticides are relevant. Who needs to control weeds and insects in the winter? Thus far, the landscape industry has been all but shut out by the Minister’s office. No one has any indications what his ‘made in Manitoba’ ban will look like. The Minister’s office has made inclinations toward following in the footsteps of the eastern provinces, which have implemented strict and broad bans on weed and insect control products. The effect of the bans in the east are decimated lawns, destroyed by cutworms, sod webworm, and chinch bugs. Weeds are out of control to the point that some recreational fields have turned to installing expensive artificial turf having lost the war with weeds and insects and found themselves incapable of providing safe conditions for outdoor sports. The landscape industry has lost thousands of jobs. Homeowners are facing the huge and unnecessary cost of replacing their entire lawn following insect explosions. People are crossing the border to buy pesticides in the U.S., bringing them into Canada (which is legal), and applying them in defiance of the bylaws. Opposition to the ban is growing. Politicians, and even the media, have shifted their position and now support a more relaxed ban that would provide for some use of pesticides. Having seen not only the disastrous effects of the bans in the eastern provinces, but also the backlash over the fact that these bans are being politically driven rather than scientifically based, provinces and cities to the west have taken a very long look at this issue, and made their decisions based on science, not politics. British Columbia, Alberta, Calgary, and Regina have all recently considered the value that pesticides provide and decided that an outright ban was not the correct decision. Minister Mackintosh should keep in mind that this is not Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, P.E.I., or Nova Scotia. These provinces rest on the Canadian shield. Newfoundland (The Rock) and Prince Edward Island are islands. How far can weeds spread from across an island? If a dandelion seed should float through the Ontario air, it would not likely get far. It would no doubt become snagged in the needles of a tall cedar. If it should fall to the ground it would stand a very good chance of landing on solid rock and it’s journey would end. If it should find some thin patch of soil, it
shall have to compete with towering trees for sunlight and nutrients. Is it any wonder we don’t see dandelions over running our forests? The same goes for British Columbia. On the prairie provinces however, a single dandelion can spread hundreds of seeds over several square kilometres. When the seed lands, it will find itself in the richest soil in the country, in full sunlight, and with little competition. If anyone thought a pesticide ban in the eastern provinces seemed like a bad idea, a ban on the same scale in the prairie provinces would result in consequences far beyond what we have already seen in other provinces with bans. As a consumer, you should be aware, that should Minister Mackintosh push forward with a comprehensive ban on weed and insect control products, that your options will be extremely limited and the cost to maintain your property will skyrocket. So-called ‘safe’, ‘natural’, or ‘bio’ pesticides are almost ineffective unless used in extremely high volumes at extremely high cost. There may be little to no means to control insects in your lawn. While a product does exist offering reasonable control of dandelions, this product is still considered a pesticide. It does not effectively control many other weeds in the lawn and comes at an extremely high cost. Most homeowners will simply be unable to afford lawn care. The landscape industry in Manitoba employs hundreds of people. Lawn care companies here are thriving. Obviously, weed control is a necessity here, or they wouldn’t be. This government is about to put hundreds of people out of work, many companies out of business, and about to sharply reduce the value of your property by sentencing your landscape to a slow painful death by weeds and insects. if you would like to do something about it and would like your voice heard, you can write to premier Greg selinger , c/o landscape manitoba, p.o. Box 1711 stn main, Winnipeg, manitoba, r3c 9Z9.
