CARING FOR HOLIDAY-THEMED PLANTS

A few of the seasonal plants that are popular this time of year are orchids, cyclamen, poinsettia and amaryllis. Caring for these indoor plants is fairly simple as most of them are low maintenance. ORCHIDS

Orchids are not hard to grow (one myth dispelled!). In fact, we find many people who are good at ignoring their plants, grow orchids very well. The most 16

common orchids are epiphytic and lipophilic-type cymbidium orchids, which means they grow in trees or on rocks in tropical climates. In your home, they prefer indirect light and cool, but not cold temperatures — 17 to 24 degrees Celsius is best. A cool, bright window works well. Fertilize once a month with an orchid fertilizer. It’s best to let the roots get dry between watering. When you do water, soak the roots by leaving the pot in the sink over night. CYCLAMEN

Easy to grow, cyclamen don’t demand much attention. Like orchids, they enjoy cool

temperatures and indirect but bright light. Fertilize with 2020-20 once a month. Available in pink, red, white and a variety of lipstick-bright colours, they can continue to bloom for up to four months. Many of the new introductions over recent years have featured wonderful colour combinations and the solid-coloured plants are available in vivid shades of red, pink, and white that will knock your eyes out. You do not need a green thumb to take care of cyclamen. Water this plant when the soil feels dry. Gradually cut back on watering as the flowers fade and the plant goes dormant in the spring.


Poinsettia

Orchid

While in bloom, place it in a bright window. While dormant, keep it in a cool dark place with good air circulation. Avoid getting the soil wet while the plant is dormant, as the root tuber can rot. Cyclamen will emerge from dormancy in September. Start watering and fertilizing regularly at this point. Move the plant to a bright room but keep it away from direct sunlight until it blooms. Cyclamen need relatively high humidity, especially during the dry winter months. Mist it with water every day or two and keep in the coolest room in your house for best performance. Doing this will ensure it survives and blooms next winter. POINSETTIA

This is the number one seasonal flowering plant at this time of year. Originally from the desert of Mexico, this tells you that they like to be dry between watering applications. They do not like drafts from open doors and mostly, they enjoy the brightest natural light you can offer. Note that the bright red “flowers” are not flowers at all, but coloured leaves. The flowers are smallish and yellow, appearing in the

middle of a leaf cluster on the top of the plant. When you buy a poinsettia, look for one that is not in “flower” to ensure the longest possible bloom time. To care for these tropical plants, place them near a sunny window and keep the temperature constant, around 18-23 degrees Celsius. Water the plant when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. In low humidity seasons, such as the winter, this could be as often as once a day. However, do not let it sit in water, as this will kill it. Most poinsettia problems are due to overwatering. Remove the plant from the decorative wrap when you first bring it home and place the potted plant in a saucer where the water can drain freely through the bottom. AMARYLLIS

You may buy amaryllis as a bulb or a flowering plant depending on the time of year. Right now, both are available at most garden retailers. The bulbs are fun and very easy to grow. Plant the amaryllis bulb in

a pot about 2 cm wider than the bulb, using quality, well-drained potting mix. Place in a bright room near a sunny window. Warm temperatures hasten blooming. When it does bloom, usually about six to eight weeks after you pot the bulb up, pull the plant back from bright light to prolong the blossom time. Don’t lose patience if it takes its time to push up a stem and bloom. Sometimes they are just a bit lazy. Remember to look for a quality bulb: The larger the bulb, the greater the number of flowers and flower stems. Make sure that it is firm, like a good onion. A long, sweet journey. Professional movers usually sell standard-sized boxes that are sturdy and easy to stack, as well as paper that can protect your items without leaving newsprint behind. Finally, which of your belongings do you want/need to move? Why not purge all of those unnecessary items you don’t need? The following is a handy reference for what to do when. A MONTH BEFORE THE MOVE …

• De-clutter, pitch, give away, donate — whatever — but pare down your goods. • Obtain change-of-address cards from the post office. • Notify magazines, insurance companies, banks, credit card companies, schools, employers, etc. of your change of address. • If you are moving to a new home or condo that includes appliances, ask for the owner’s manuals ahead of time. 32

Here are five good reasons why renting is preferable to owning. 1. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE.

Shovelling snow, raking autumn leaves, mowing the lawn – outdoor tasks are your landlord, superintendent or management company’s responsibility, unless your lease dictates otherwise. 2. FIXTURE REPAIR. If your

shower stops running properly, it’s your landlord’s responsibility to call and pay for a plumber.

3. ACCESS TO AMENITIES.

Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, high-density housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping. 4. CHEAPER INSURANCE.

Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters’ insurance, expect to be paying approximately half of what you would if you owned your home.

racious hosting is all about making your guests feel comfortable. It’s also about making your home, their home, even if only for a short period of time. This is when some of those often-overlooked rooms come into focus – namely, the guest bedroom and bath. Follow these design tips to style these spaces as a cosy retreat your visitors will never want to leave!

Decorate with neutrals If your goal is to make them comfortable, using a neutral colour palette of creams, whites and gentle greys will go a long way. Generally speaking, this family of hues is broadly appealing, which makes it a great choice for a guest bedroom, where one guest’s esthetic preferences and comfort level may differ dramatically from another’s. Another reason neutral colours work well in a guest bedroom – or in any bedroom – is the atmosphere and ambience they lend to the space. Cool, calm and collected is the ultimate in guest room goals. Finally, as we see colour trends fade in and out of style every year, a neutral colour scheme has

remained consistent. Going this route means you won’t have to redecorate any time soon.

Make it indulgent Treat your guests to a little luxury for the duration of their stay. When it comes to extravagances, the best place to take your cues is from the hotel industry. Think back to your favourite vacation accommodation, and remember what made your stay so memorable. Then, incorporate some of these elements into your bedrooms at home. Fresh soft bedding, piles of pillows and extra blankets are sleep essentials, especially during the winter months. In the guest bath, ensure there are plenty of plush towels and toiletries at your guests’ disposal. From a decor perspective, you can incorporate little luxuries into the room in the form of a textured feature wall, elegant window coverings, modern lighting, and furnishings that are both practical and stylish.

Enhance function and interest Some thoughtful accessories and pieces of furniture, beyond the bed

and night tables, can really give your guests added independence and flexibility in their room. Assume that visitors will be using the room to relax and do their own thing at times, so aim for comfort and function. Incorporate a small sitting area tucked into the corner of a room to add visual interest, while providing a place for people to sit, take a phone call, or just relax With that said, don’t overburden the room, or your guests, with too much “stuff.” Keep the space clean and clutter-free to maintain its sense of rest and relaxation.

All the right pieces Creating a “home away from home” is easy when you have the right inspiration. But while your goal is to indulge your guests, remember that the room is in your home, so it should align with your own esthetic preferences and practical needs. With the right pieces in place, you just might find yourself spending a lot more time in the guest room.
