RESEARCH MOVERS BEFORE YOU HIRE

Hiring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches.

However, you’ll want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards.

How can you tell?

Do your research. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? You can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s consumer protection agency.

You can also: Ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writing; ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage.

Does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged after that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home? Will there be a fuel surcharge or a stairs or long-distance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door?

Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do

they arrive at a valuation that is covered by insurance?

It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand.

Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move.

SIX TIPS FOR RENTING WITH PETS

1. Don’t wait until the last minute. Begin looking for a pet-friendly rental property at least six to eight weeks before you need to move.

2. Be flexible. Look at a lot of different locations/ neighbourhoods and property types (apartment blocks, condo units, homes). This will improve your chances of finding a suitable place for you and your pet.

3. Introduce your pet to your new landlord. Invite your new landlord to your current home to show the animal has caused no problems there or ask if you can bring your pet to the

landlord’s home. You want to show that your dog is calm and well-behaved.

4. Don’t sneak your pet in without permission. This will only lead to future problems and the landlord can give you notice to move out.

5. Get written permission from the landlord. Ask them to add a clause to your tenancy agreement that says your pet is allowed to live there and any conditions set by the landlord. As well, make sure that any “no pets” clauses are removed from the agreement. If you already have one pet and would like to get another, talk

to your landlord to make sure it’s okay.

6. Be prepared to pay a pet damage deposit. Your landlord can ask you to pay a pet damage deposit that can be up to one month’s rent. This is in addition to your security deposit and tenant services deposit (if applicable).
