‘art’of
own interior masterpiece
The
design
D
by BILHA KANGETHE
esigning interiors is akin to creating art; you’re painting with textures, materials and layers, ensuring that each element seamlessly combines to become a cohesive and inviting masterpiece. Cosy spaces are especially artful, as they embody warmth, comfort and security. In a world that buzzes with motion, it’s heartwarming to know that at the end of the day, your intimate space awaits to provide solace, wrapping around you in a warm hug. Let’s embark together on this journey to explore how you can design your own cosy interior, the significance of materials, layers and textures, and some notable 2024 trends to inspire you along the way.
Materials ● ● ● The materials you select will influence the aesthetic, mood and functional properties within a space. Ideally, it’s best to strike a balance between soft fabrics for drapes, cushions, rugs and linens, with
14
natural materials such as wood and stone. This balance enhances comfort, adds warmth and contributes to the tactile experience of a room. To achieve this balance: • Incorporate elements such as wood for floors or furniture, stone for fireplaces, and wool in the form of soft rugs for an organic, earthy feel. • For that plush, cosy sensation, think velvet sofas, cashmere blankets and chenille cushions. • To create harmony, place a rug underneath furniture or on the floor, add drapery to your windows or on a wall.
Layering ● ● ● Layering isn’t just for fashion; it adds depth and richness to interiors. It involves strategically placing various elements on top of each other to create interest and balance. When done correctly, the result is a rich, harmonious and cosy space. However, not everything needs to be layered. Some items or areas can stand alone as a focal point, so the room doesn’t feel overly busy. Layering techniques: • Begin with a neutral base, often the largest items such as a sofa or main rug, and then add layers. • If you’re layering cushions, combine different sizes, shapes, and fabrics to create visual interest without overwhelming the space. • Ensure that each layer has a purpose. Whether it’s a throw blanket or a decorative piece, avoid clutter by making sure each item serves a function or enhances the decor. • Allow breathing room into your design. Every area doesn’t need to be filled or layered. Negative space can provide visual relief and balance.
as the final varnish. When infused with love, intent and personal touches, our spaces become more than just rooms; they become stories, each corner narrating tales of warmth, comfort and soulful embraces. The trends of 2024 further emphasize this, encouraging you to merge nature, history, and functionality to craft spaces that aren’t just aesthetically pleasing, but soul-soothing, too. • Connect with nature indoors using green walls, indoor plants, and maximizing natural light. • Flexibility is key, with spaces transforming from functional workspaces by day, to cosy reading corners in the evening. • Mix eras by blending vintage pieces with modern designs for a timeless ambience. • Sustainable choices such as reclaimed wood or upcycled furniture infuse interiors with character and consciousness.
The end game ● ● ● • Layering is often about trial and error. Don’t be afraid to edit, remove, or rearrange layers until you achieve the desired look and feel.
Textures ● ● ● Tactile variety stimulates your sense of touch and sight. The following are some ways to add texture to your space: • Cosy spaces benefit from soft textures, while formal spaces might lean on harder, sleeker materials. • Pair a plush rug with a sleek leather sofa or a raw wood table with smooth, satin chairs to strike a delightful balance. • If introducing various textures, they should complement each other. A room with rustic wood beams can still feature a sleek marble table, tied together by a colour palette or stylistic elements. • A room shouldn’t be overwhelmed by one texture. If you have a large leather sectional sofa, consider varying the look with curtains, cushions and rugs in softer fabrics. • Textures aren’t just tactile; they’re also visual. A patterned wallpaper can work wonders to break the monotony of a room. However, if using multiple patterns, they shouldn’t clash.
2024 trends ● ● ● In the grand tapestry of design, materials act as the paint, with layering as the brush strokes and textures
You don’t need to overhaul your entire interior to align with trends. Often, subtle incorporations and additions can effectively capture the zeitgeist. Regardless of how you decide to create your interior masterpiece, don’t forget to inject your unique story, memories and personal style into your space.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PROFILE
ST. BONIFACE A BIT OF FRENCH CULTURE AND HISTORY
DAWN PETER
Saint Boniface runs north as far as Mission Street following the Red River west along Tache Avenue and later Lyndale Drive. A large area with francophone residents, Saint Boniface extends east past Archibald Street to Plessis Road, reaching the Perimeter Highway. The vibe in St. Boniface is clearly French-Canadian. From the Forks, it careens like canoe-carrying voyageurs to the next creek. Whether you’re in surgery at St. Boniface hospital or serving Sleeman’s at the Marion Hotel, you’re part of the living canvas here in the Montreal of the Metis. Former residents counted French as their first language, but now most are more diverse and Englishspeaking. They may not look as rugged as the prairie pioneers of old but they celebrate this French

restful and restorative design can be achieved for any style preference by simply following some standard home design best practices. “Calming design comes down to how the space makes you feel,” says Brittany McNab, co-
owner of Fifteen Twelve Home Co. and a featured presenter at the upcoming 2024 Calgary Home + Garden Show. No matter the style, McNab says creating a relaxing home environment is all about functionality and personalization.
A
calming
design comes down to how the space makes you feel. Instead of having a hard-and-fast rule about what makes a space beautiful, she stresses that form and function should work in tandem, creating practical interiors that work for the people who interact with the space every day. For anyone looking to update and enhance their home to feel more comfortable in 2024 and beyond, a thoughtful and intentional de-cluttering of unnecessary items and mess would be the first and most costeffective and important step, says McNab. “Before hiring an interior designer, clear your space of things you don’t need, want or like. I often see people who have rooms with too many pieces of furniture or too many small tchotchkes. It looks too busy, and that is something I believe contributes to a space feeling stressful. After decluttering, simple design changes will make a space shine and feel lovely.” The next step is to focus on creating a purposeful floorplan.
Beyond just the style and finish of the pieces in a room, being thoughtful about how furniture and decor exist in a home can help minimize ‘noise’ and elevate the overall look and feel of everything within the four walls. Borrowing from the ancient philosophy of feng shui – the practice of arranging furniture and decor to create balance with the natural world – intentionality in a floorplan can greatly improve the overall energy of a home. Even if you or your designer are not strictly adhering to the rules and practices of feng shui, the right scale and positioning of the pieces in a room is a must. “I always consider a few things when deciding on furniture orientation,” says McNab. “First, I take into account natural paths of travel through the room and make sure a space of at least 30 inches, but ideally 36 inches, is available for people to move about the room freely. This should be a given, but focus on keeping doorways, hallways, and
windows clear, as well as the space around a coffee table or a bed. You also want to be able to move chairs in and out of a dining room or office. Nothing should impede travel.” Finally, it’s time to understand how you use the rooms in your house. For example, will the living room be used for conversation, watching TV, eating, snacking, or snoozing? Is it a busy space like the bathroom, mud room, laundry room or kitchen where people will be in and out throughout the day? Each room should be designed to prioritize purpose and function. Once the three objectives are met – decluttering, furniture placement and function – you will have the perfect canvas to apply your unique and personalized style, while maintaining a sense of calm, relaxation and comfort. And above all, says McNab, “Stay true to yourself in your design; you will feel most at home in your space.” Feb. 23–March 8, 2024 | Renters Guide 23
ADVICE | THE RENTALIST
ROOMMATE LIVING HOW TO DEAL WITH REPLENISHABLES
JACKIE MARCHILDON
Living with roommates has many benefits but it can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables such as toilet paper, food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper. TAKE TURNS BUYING: This works
if – and only if – everyone agrees to it. If not, it’s chaos. You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. Be clear — I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next. Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning supplies and anything else you might share. THE SLUSH FUND: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for take-out (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount that everyone will contribute on a weekly or monthly basis, and confirm what the funds will be 24
Renters Guide | Feb. 23–March 8, 2024
used for to buy. Will they strictly be used for household supplies or will they pay for groceries, too? KEEP THINGS SEPARATE: If you can’t all agree on the best way to deal with replenishables, it’s best to keep it all separate. If you’re living with someone you strictly consider a roommate, and not necessarily a friend, this is often the best bet. It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier. EMBRACE FAMILY LIVING: If you’re
close with your roommates, you might not need an actual system. For some roommates, especially those who have lived together for a long time, these things just work themselves out. You’ll grab toilet paper when it’s on sale, and so
will your roommate. You’ll make dinner, they’ll do the dishes, and vice versa. If you like to bake, and your roommates like to eat your baking, they’ll make sure the house is always stocked with flour. When you live like this, you have more of a family dynamic than a roommate agreement. It can be wonderful to have a relationship like this, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure you’re all on board before you start using your roomies’ shampoo or eating their cereal!

CHILDPROOFING CHALLENGES by KIM CARLTON Having a baby is an exciting, but a nerve-wracking experience. Here are some strategies to help you keep your home safe and sound. • Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room.
• Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies — your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub — one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out
of reach. Use cabinet locks to secure these items. • Make sure cords for blinds are not tied together at the bottom (this is a strangulation hazard). • Make sure knives and sharp items are in an area where kids can’t access them. • Check toys for broken parts/ bits that are a choking hazard or sharp. Keep small toys for older children (like figurines, game board pieces and small building blocks) away from your baby.

your creativity to achieve an authentic home vibe. After all, decorating your space is more than just arranging furniture and choosing colour palettes; it’s about infusing what you love into every corner. “Living authentically means living how you want to live by building a space that makes you feel good in your heart. That’s a true home,” says Tiffany Pratt, a Toronto-
based multi-disciplinary designer and artist with an unmistakably authentic style.
●●● To begin To truly decorate with the authentic you in mind, the journey begins with a thoughtful exploration of your tastes, experiences, and the unique elements that define you.
Start by taking a trip down memory lane. Unearth artifacts from your past – travel souvenirs, inherited heirlooms, or mementoes from significant life events. These pieces carry stories. Integrating them into your decor is like creating a visual autobiography. The vintage postcard collection from your backpacking days or the quirky teapot handed down from a grandparent can be focal points for their aesthetic appeal and the memories they evoke.
●●● The process It’s the details that fuel authenticity. Custom-made
throw pillows with fabrics that reflect your cultural background or a gallery wall of your own photography, can transform a generic space into a personalized haven. Or, embrace imperfections and quirks, whether it’s a wellworn bookshelf that tells tales of countless reads or a hand-crafted pottery collection showcasing the unique irregularities of each piece. Colour is also a powerful tool to express your authentic self. Don’t shy away from bold hues if they reflect your personality. “Adding colours that make your heart happy is a great way to feel joyful and express who you are,” says Pratt. “The colours you choose become an expression of you at home.” Let colour play a role in conveying your energy and passion, whether it’s an accent wall in your favourite shade or an array of vibrant throws. If you’re drawn to soothing neutrals, layer textures and materials to add depth and interest. The key is to create a colour palette that feels inherently you. Furniture choices should be aesthetically pleasing, functional and adhere to your lifestyle. If
you love hosting game nights, invest in a spacious dining table or a comfortable sectional. For avid readers, a cosy nook with a well-stocked bookshelf could become the heart of your home. Align your furniture with your daily rituals and activities, so your space is beautiful and purposeful. When it comes to artwork, choose pieces that speak to your emotions, personal style and taste. It doesn’t have to be from a highpriced gallery; it can be your own creations, canvases from local artists, or even a tapestry collected during your travels. Plants bring life and vitality to any space and choosing them based on your lifestyle is key. If you have a green thumb and the time to care for them, a variety of indoor plants can flourish. If you’re a bit more hands-off, opt for lowmaintenance succulents or faux greenery that still adds a touch of nature without the commitment. As you grow, travel and experience life, let your home’s interior grow with you. Embrace change, add new layers, and don’t be afraid to let go of items that no longer resonate with the person you are becoming.

ADVICE | MAKE YOUR MOVE
AVOID COMMON
PACKING MISTAKES CHUCK RESNICK
Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. CONSIDER PURCHASING BOXES FROM YOUR MOVER.
The most common packing mistake people make is getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too many things in them. Using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy and the box might break during the move. Use this rule of thumb: The heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE NUMBER OF BOXES YOU NEED.
You will most likely underestimate your box requirement. Often, people think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then two days before moving day, they realize they need 250. 3. START PACKING EARLY AND BE COMPLETELY PACKED WHEN
This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. There is a loading system where the first things placed in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; these items are placed in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. Next, a ‘box wall’ is stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. Plastic wrapped mattresses are then put against the box wall and everything is secured with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, movers can’t create that box wall early on. This decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money!
stack them along a wall near the front door. Say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from an upper bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 45 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 45 seconds multiplied by 200 boxes can save lots of time and money. 5. HAVE YOUR MOVING COMPANY PACK FOR YOU. Moving
companies are skilled, have more experience packing and have the correct sized boxes. So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way. Chuck Resnick is vice-president Marketing and Operations for Two Men And a Truck - Canada, a division of Heron Capital Corporation. Visit twomen.ca
THE MOVERS ARRIVE. There’s
nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes. 30 Renters Guide | Feb. 23–March 8, 2024
4. THINK AHEAD. Begin packing
items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes, move them to the front of your apartment and

CHOOSING THE RIGHT
COFFEE TABLE by LISA ROGERS
Many of us have been thinking of doing some redecorating but are not sure exactly where to start, or if we actually want to do an entire room or just enhance it. In the context of the living room or den, a good place to start is always the centrepiece – the coffee table. HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT COFFEE TABLE
The design decision isn’t as intuitive as you may think. Here’s what to consider before you make your purchase. Choosing the right coffee table for your space seems simple enough: You walk into your favourite shop, pick a piece you love, go home and voila! But wait a few hours, reflect a little more and you may realize that you made the wrong choice. Like choosing the right couch, finding the right coffee table takes some larger considerations. Size, height and width all matter, as does scale and proportion. Does it have to be kid-friendly or storage-friendly? Does it fit your lifestyle or your room? CONSIDER SIZE FIRST
Is there anything more awkward than an ill-fitting coffee table? One that’s too high or far too low? The general rule is that you should find a coffee table that is ideally standing at the same height as the cushions, or one to two inches. lower. If you go too far on 36
Renters Guide | Feb. 23–March 8, 2024
either side of that equation, it will just look off and throw the whole space into question. DON’T FORGET PROPORTION
Similar to the above sentiment, look for a coffee table that has the right length in comparison to the width of your couch. In specific terms, this means your coffee table should be two-thirds the length of your couch. So, for a 96-in couch, look for a coffee table that is 64 in. long. Also, think about distance, too: From the edge of your couch to the edge of the table should be 18 in. Why? You want it to be close enough to reach for your drink or put your book down, but far
enough that you can stretch out your legs. BALANCE YOUR STYLE
Find harmony between your couch style and your coffee table style. If you have a substantial couch in a solid block of colour, try pairing it with a “lighter” version of a coffee table that’s glass with a chrome frame. If your couch is more streamlined and smaller in frame, opt for a coffee table that has more weight to it, whether that’s a wooden piece or an entirely solid base. FUNCTIONALITY
Do you have pets or children? Might be best to opt for a coffee table that has an oval shape; no
hard edges mean no possible injuries. Consider what the primary use of the table will be: Is it purely decorative, for storage or for entertaining purposes? All of that comes into play. Some tables come with shelves or drawers, others with materials that may stain if a wet drink or food is placed on it. Pick a piece that works with your lifestyle.
not stand out like a sore thumb. Whether you favour contemporary or vintage, take a quick snap of your space to bring with you on your buying excursion. It will really help store clerks find the appropriate style for you, and you can also remind yourself of exactly how your space looks while out shopping.
MATERIALS
CONSIDER MULTIPLE MINI-TABLES
Speaking of materials, there is a plethora of different varieties you can choose from, from woods to metal, marble and Lucite. Again, this depends on your overall room (and house) style. You want the coffee table to meld harmoniously with all your other furnishings and
Maybe a bit controversial for some, but sometimes a set of mini tables works better in a space than one larger coffee table. This is especially true of smaller spaces, because it offers a level of flexibility in terms of how you use the tables, and where you put them.

We all have spots that are magnets for clutter, usually because they provide a convenient, empty flat surface to pile things on. Walk around your home to determine where the clutter hot spots are, then remove the clutter (toss it in a box or laundry basket for now) and put something beautiful in its place, like a vase or a sculpture. If it’s the dining room table, set it as if you were having a dinner party. This will deter you from using it as a drop zone. Keep your pantry DecluttereD
Most people can’t resist buying items that are on sale. But when it comes to food, buying too much and neglecting to use it before the expiry date will cost you more in the long run. It’s easy to forget what you have on hand when things build up. Whether you keep your food in the kitchen cupboards or a large pantry, keeping these areas streamlined and organized will save you time, money and frustration. If you are reluctant to get rid of certain items because they were expensive, think about how much it’s costing you to keep them. The more possessions you have, the more time it takes to care for them and the more space it takes to store them. Although it may be difficult to let go of things that no longer serve you, the payoff is well worth it: You’ll have more free time
in your day and be more relaxed in your home. feeling stucK
If you find yourself backsliding when it comes to maintaining your organizing systems, don’t berate yourself, as this will sap your energy and prevent you from doing anything about it. Rather than dwelling on what went wrong, focus instead on what needs to be done. Just say “oops” and move on to take action.
