BETWEEN TWO RIVERS
St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers. The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary.
Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river.
As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river.
Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes. Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets.
Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became
overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south.
St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south.
The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive. With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus
routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view.
Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour.
Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena.
St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

COMPATIBILITY TESTING
If you’re sharing a space with someone else, unless you’re both on completely different schedules, they’re going to become a pretty big part of your life. Girlfriends and boyfriends come and go, but especially in a big city, roommates can be with each other for years –even decades if the lease is good enough. If you’ve been “set up” by friends, it’s easy to find out about the other person’s habits and foibles before you let them sign the lease. But how can you ensure that cool-seeming stranger who answered your ad won’t become your new worst enemy once the lease is signed?
I just happen to be a professional matchmaker, and the similarities that run between a love match and a roomie match are astounding, so I’m going to offer my professional matchmaking advice on finding that perfect roommate. These five topics can guide your roommate compatibility testing – and are ideal to cover before you go making any year-long commitments.
1. ARE YOU A LARK, OR AN OWL?
If you’ve barely hit the sack at 3 a.m. after a Walking Dead marathon and your roomie rises at 4:45 a.m. for an early morning run, it’s never going to work unless you’ve got an extremely soundproof kitchen and bathroom. Better to find someone who keeps similar hours.

HOW DO YOU PLAY THE SOCIAL GAME?
How’s your social life? A single introvert may not pair up very well with somebody who hosts a party every month and has friends “drop by” at random. Make sure you ask before the first spontaneous after-work session occurs in your living room.
3. WHERE ARE YOUR BOUNDARIES?
Can I borrow your boots? Do you mind if I use some of this soy sauce? Some people are extremely comfortable with sharing not only a space, but also the items within it. I once had a roommate who –after I’d told her she could wear a particular skirt – took to dressing herself daily from my wardrobe, never bothering to ask permission. Boundaries around everything from the food in the kitchen to the contents of your closet need to be clearly delineated.
4. WHO’S A BATHROOM HOG? How much longer will you be in there? When two people share a lone bathroom, shower length,
makeup application time and the duration of your depilation sessions all become a matter of some urgency. Talk to your potential cohabitant about their personal habits, especially if you both leave for work around the same time.
5. HOUSEKEEPING EXPECTATIONS?
When was the last time you cleaned your bathtub? If your answer is “this morning, right after my shower,” and your prospective roommate responds incredulously, “you clean your bathtub?” it’s not a match. Be upfront about housekeeping standards, or one of you might end up feeling like the other one’s mom.

Ah summer… Images of long days, lounging under a tree reading your favourite book, chatting with friends over a spritzer, barbecuing burgers and enjoying endless evenings.
What is your image of the perfect time spent in the summer?
The temptation of relaxation and socializing with its inherent fun food and drinks is certainly part of our love of summer months.
And it is absolutely important that you enjoy these moments in life.
At the same time, don’t forget that our health and fitness should not be put on the back burner. Nothing replaces feeling good, and once good health deteriorates, it becomes more difficult as we age, to get that back.
The great news is that research tells us that it doesn’t take summiting mountains to have good health. But do you need to walk 10,000 steps every day to get any health benefits?
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association asked the question “What are the associations between daily step counts and step intensity with mortality among U.S. adults?”
According to this large study, yes, more steps can, in essence, equal a longer life with less risk of disease.
However, what was interesting is that 8,000 steps a day was the
threshold for change, and it didn’t seem to matter what the intensity level of the steps was, nor did it take into account if the steps were walking, gardening, housecleaning or what have you.
Please be aware that several other studies, including from the Centres for Disease Control, recommends 75 total minutes of intense exercise per week. However, you can break it up into smaller segments.
To summarize. Move your body – every day. Get your heart rate up at multiple times through the week during your activities. In other words, push yourself without overdoing it. You should always be able to talk during exertion. Also, importantly – exercise responsibly. Always confer with your doctor before trying something new. During hot summer days, go early or later in the cooler parts of the day. Hydrate, lots of plain water. Wear sunscreen, hats, long light UV shirts and pants. If you go in the forest, wear long pants and socks and look for ticks afterwards.
1) Meet your friends and family for an activity, hike a trail, go berry picking, bike one of the many rail trails. Or simply walk around the neighbourhood and enjoy the gardens.
2) Start playing pickleball. As this sport grows in popularity, it will be easy to find a court/ association near you. Start slow, with a beginners group. And do some research on exercises that you can do to prepare.
3) Rent a cottage that has activities close by. Swimming, hiking, room for bocce ball or croquet with the kids and/or grandkids is always a good laugh.
4) If you are inclined as I am, pick a defined walking route and time yourself. Listen to good music (watch out for traffic) and change your cadence while you are walking. Move quickly and get that heart going, and then slow down until your breathing is normal again, and repeat. Get outside, preferably in the shade, every day. No excuses. They make rain coats and umbrellas for a reason. Take deep breathes and stop and smell the roses. It is a beautiful world, take it in.
