Spice up your space through an interplay of contrasting elements

Winterwarm-up

Acosy home is so much more than pillows and throws; it’s about creating an allencompassing atmosphere of warmth that appeals visually, and also beckons you to come in, relax and stay a while — or forever!

In our own designs, we achieve warmth through an interplay of contrasting elements, which help bring depth and dimension to a space. Picture it: A palette of rich, moody tones juxtaposed against airy, care-free neutrals; a variety of materials, textures and finishes;

and the interaction of shadow and light. These opposing elements create intimacy, drawing you in and wrapping you up in its warm embrace. Let’s explore this design style and how you can use it to spice up your space.

Colour

The choice of colour sets the tone for any interior, and when it comes to creating warmth, interior trends are gravitating toward richer, deeper tones. For example, a dining room draped in a dark aubergine; a basement bar adorned in forest green; or a bathroom splashed in navy. These

hues not only evoke a sense of depth, but also infuse the room with a warm, organic ambience.

Contrast

As we’ve already mentioned, contrast plays a pivotal role in many of our designs. Black is a great way to add a much-needed dose of drama, particularly when incorporated into an otherwise neutral room. Black is often associated with sophistication and luxury, and when combined with earthy tones such as deep browns, muted greens and lighter neutrals, the result is a harmonious blend that emanates warmth.

INSPIRATION | home
14 Renters Guide | March 8–22, 2024

Connection

Organic materials can also connect a home and its residents to their roots. Natural wood, stone and textiles not only evoke a homey, welcoming look, but it also contributes to a cosy feel. Plush rugs, soft throws, knitted cushions and textured wall coverings — in combination, layering these elements make it feel more inviting and cocoonlike. By incorporating materials that engage the senses, you can create an immersive experience that fosters a sense of comfort.

Complementary lighting

Lighting, often underestimated, plays a pivotal role in shaping the feel of a space. In the pursuit of cosiness, employ a mix of natural and artificial light. Strategically

placed lamps, pendant lights or wall sconces can cast an inviting glow that enhances the richness of your chosen colour palette. For an intimate and moody atmosphere, consider dimmable lights and warmtoned light bulbs, creating a cocooning effect that is perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Cramped spaces

While the allure of deeper tones is undeniable, it’s crucial to strike a balance, especially in smaller spaces. To prevent a room from feeling cramped, incorporate lighter elements. Consider light-coloured furniture, crisp linens, or even purposefully placed mirrors to reflect light and create the illusion of more space. It’s this juxtaposition of dark and light elements in smaller spaces

that ensures the warmth and depth are maintained without overwhelming the senses. It’s a delicate dance between the contrasting hues that results in a harmonious and inviting environment.

Cosy and warm

Opposites attract, as they say, especially when the goal is to bring some heat into the home. We find that the right colour, texture and light, in the right doses, can make all the difference in transforming your living space into a haven of warmth and relaxation. Whether you’re entertaining guests or seeking solace after a hectic day, a cosy home is the ultimate sanctuary, where every element converges to create a space that feels like a warm embrace. So, now that it’s winter? Let it snow!

PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR: Peach Fuzz

Pantone has released its colour of the year, and it’s just peachy! Peach Fuzz embodies our desire for self-care and connection. This gentle, velvety peach tone seeks to enrich mind, body and soul. “In looking for a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance, a shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at the Pantone Color Institute.

“If you are looking for a calming, versatile wall colour, a soft shade of pink presents a great option. While pink is often associated with femininity, the colour is more versatile than you think and works in a variety of spaces, from modern to traditional. It pairs just as well with neutrals as with a host of saturated colour tones.”

NESTLED BETWEEN MAIN STREET AND THE RED RIVER SEVEN OAKS

Located in northwest Winnipeg, the Seven Oaks neighbourhood is nestled between bustling Main Street and the banks of the Red River. The southern border can be found between Matheson Avenue East and McAdam Avenue and the northern border along Armstrong Avenue. Close enough for an easy commute to downtown and the nature of Kildonan Park, this area offers something for everyone.

Access to several small parks, as well as proximity to the spacious Kildonan Park and golf course, makes Seven Oaks an appealing neighbourhood for families, fitness enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Affordable living, Red River views, and a range of nearby shops and services make for attractive and convenient urban living.

Seven Oaks combines convenient access to urban amenities with quiet suburban living, whether you prefer strolling along the banks of the Red River or meeting friends for coffee and a macaron at A l’Epi de Blé French Bakery. This neighbourhood offers a range of housing options for all budgets and lifestyles.

This diverse area is home to a wide range of age groups, from babies to seniors. One or two-person households made up half of the area’s population, and families are also prevalent. Tagalog, Ukrainian, Polish, Portuguese, and Punjabi are just some of the languages you’ll hear spoken in the community. .

Residents enjoy a number of small parks and playgrounds within Seven Oaks, including Volunteer Park and the

Leila, Perth Avenue, and Burrin tot lots. Just over the area’s northern border lies the substantial Kildonan Park with its outdoor swimming pool, Rainbow Stage theatre, and toboggan runs. Shops, restaurants, and services are located on bordering Main Street and kindergarten to grade five students can attend Governor Semple school.

The northwest location of Seven Oaks gives residents convenient proximity to the amenities of downtown Winnipeg. Eleven bus stops are located throughout the neighbourhood to transport residents throughout the city. Winnipeg Transit routes 18, 32, 77, and 38 all service the area. Seven Oaks is bordered by the major thoroughfare of Main Street, which also provides access to nearby Perimeter Highway to the north.

HOW TO PICK WINE LIKE A PRO with Super Wine Girl, Angela Aiello

1

NEW WORLD IS ALL ABOUT GRAPES AND EUROPE IS ALL ABOUT THE PLACE IT’S FROM

The first thing to understand is that in places such as Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina, wines are labelled by the grapes inside the bottle. You’ll see grape names such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Shiraz and Grenache, etc.

In many places in Europe, wines are labelled by the place they are from. You’ll see names of places such as, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Chianti, Barolo, Cahors, Priorat, Rioja and Sherry. There are many varieties of grapes in the world and many regions that grow them. Each grape varietal and each region has a unique flavour profile – so there is always something to discover. Getting to know your favourite grapes and varietals is crucial in better understanding which wines you’ll prefer.

UNDERSTAND WINE STYLES AND HAVE AN IDEA OF WHICH STYLE YOU’RE CRAVING

home finds 2

Do you drink according to your mood, the weather or what food you’re pairing with the wine? Your wine preferences may change based on your mood, the occasion, the time of year or what you’re preparing for the next meal. Give your style words and feelings so that you can pinpoint exactly what wine you want to try.

DON’T JUDGE A WINE BY THE LABEL OR PRICE

Flashy art or a higher price tag can lead you to believe you are purchasing quality wine. Be mindful this is not always the case. Read the labels (both front and back). You can even research the producer for added information as you can learn more about the product and the producer’s work. A nice wine label or bottle on sale will get you once but it might not get you again. There are great wines at great prices and also great wines with great labels, but judging just on looks or price is not the way to buy wine.

BE OPEN TO TAKING A WINE ADVENTURE

Did you know the Canary Islands makes wine? Did you know Washington State makes killer Cabernet and that Argentina grows vineyards at high elevation, creating exceptional mountain wines? There is so much cool stuff to learn about wine that you can literally have an adventure in every single bottle you open! You can learn about the world in every sip, and that’s really exciting, especially now when it’s hard to travel. You can taste the world from the comfort of your home with a glass of wine in your hand and Google by your side.

Cool and concealed

Cellarettes or bar cabinets, as they are called today, have been around for centuries. They appeared in Europe as early as the 15th century, designed to carry, transport and store a small number of bottled alcoholic beverages. Today, bar cabinets are multi-functional, housing your bar accessories, bottles and also acting as a great small furniture piece.

Prosecco Rosé is finally available at the LCBO, and we are tickled pink about it. In order for it to be labelled Prosecco Rosé, the grapes used must come from a specific geographic area that has passed the Italian government’s quality requirements, and be fermented for at least 60 days in stainless steel tanks. We predict the pink bubbly will be popular this season.

WHEN MOVING,

EVERYONE WINS PLAYING BY THE RULES

When hiring a professional mover, one expects to have your possessions packed and/or transported safely. It is a common expectation, also shared by your movers. However, sometimes movers may be unable to take some of your belongings onto their truck.

Federal and provincial regulations prohibit movers from transporting hazardous materials such as – but not limited to –propane canisters, flammables or gasoline cans unless they are empty of fuel, as well as paints, solvents, firearms or anything deemed to be a hazardous material. It is important for consumers to understand what can and cannot be moved before the day arrives.

MOVERS ALSO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN GUIDELINES

At Two Men and a Truck - Canada, it is challenging for us to secure plants on our trucks and we prefer not to move valuables such as jewellery, stocks, bonds and cash – as examples. Common sense dictates that these are items you would want to take yourself.

If you have items of extraordinary value such as paintings, sculptures and antiques, let your mover know ahead of time. The issue here is insurance. The basic package your mover

offers may not cover these pricey goods. You may need to arrange for additional insurance. Your renter’s insurance policy may even have a rider for goods in transit. It’s best to check with your insurance company.

It is critical to know and understand how much insurance your moving company carries. Most provinces have a “Condition of Carriage” and most movers have their own set insurance amount. For example, at Two Men and a Truck - Canada, you are insured up to $250,000, and we offer replacement cost with a $250 deductible.

Extremely large items and tough-to-move items such as pianos, pool tables and massive wall units are a challenge. These types of large items should be discussed before moving day. We do move them every day. We use a piano board that makes it easier to move a baby grand, but it is much harder to move an upright piano, which takes muscle power, heavy duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate.

Another “rule” to be aware of if you live in an apartment building or condominium is arranging with your super or property manager to reserve the elevator for the time of your move.

Right up front, you should determine how this process works. Let your mover know where the loading/unloading zone is, or whether they will have to walk items through the lobby to get to the elevator. The more your mover knows, the more accurate their estimate will be.

No one likes moving day surprises, including your mover. Communication is key. So, once we all know where we stand, we can work together for a successful move.

GET SETTLED

INTO YOUR NEW COMMUNITY BY DOING THIS

When you move, you’ll probably be happy to let go of a few things, like old clothes, worn furniture and broken gadgets. Those you won’t miss. But the things you will? Close friends, favourite hangouts –familiar things that made you feel at home. While some things aren’t easily replaced, the following tips can help you get settled into a new neighbourhood after relocating. Find some great new favourites and it will make adjusting just a little bit easier.

TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT

Economical and eco-friendly, taking public transit is one of the best ways to get a feel for a new city. No plans? Grab a day pass and pick a route along a major road. This will help you get your bearings and get settled in an

unfamiliar place. Or just keep your eyes open in the morning during your commute. You’ll learn to recognize landmarks, familiarize yourself with street names, and perhaps spot a place or two to get off and explore. All this while someone else does the driving.

LOOK ONLINE

Online reviews host a wealth of information about local businesses around you, but don’t stop there. Bookmark some local blogsthey’re known for publishing ‘bestof’ lists and frequently updated listings to community events. And while you might not be a tourist, travel websites can be a great place to find the must-trys and can’t-misses in your new city.

ASK AROUND

Independent exploration and online research can only take you so far. Don’t be shy - take the initiative and ask someone in your project group to suggest some lunch options. Take up your

coworkers on those after-work drinks. Use opportunities to get to know others better, and ask questions! People love to share their experiences - good, bad, and ugly, and it’ll give you some much needed insight when you’re a recent transplant to a new place. If you’re introverted and this all sounds easier said than done, try connecting with just one or two people you feel comfortable with. Asking for recommendations is a casual way to break the ice and get a conversation started. You’ll get settled much quicker if you develop your social network.

Sustainable design choices

Three easy ways to make your home purchases earth-conscious

Climate change, the pandemic and various environmental challenges have heavily influenced conversations about sustainability around the globe and even in the design world. As a result, builders, architects, homeowners and

designers now more than ever are intentionally incorporating sustainable materials into the design of homes. These changes can positively affect the world, as we all come together to do our part to heal the earth. Here are three ways consumers are making their home decor purchases more sustainable.

The rise and fall of hyper-consumerism

You have likely heard of the term “fast fashion.” But are you familiar with “fast furniture”? It’s a term for home goods companies that manufacture many different styles quickly and cheaply.

Bilha Kangethe is Founder and Creative Director of The Lifestyle Loft. As a certified designer and interior decorator, she has created a company that focuses on the needs of each client and customer and helps them curate a lifestyle that is comfortable and economical. thelifestyleloft.com Photo : Michael
INSPIRATION | trend expert 36 Renters Guide | March 8–22, 2024
There is also increased awareness of hyper-consumerism, prompting many to think about investing in home pieces that will last longer

Ecologically conscious furniture and fabrics

Designers and homeowners are helping reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing ecofriendly furniture, decor and fabric. Everything from rattan, jute, bamboo, cork, recycled plastics and reclaimed wood to organic fabrics such as cotton, wool, silk and linen make responsible, ecoconscious decisions that honour quality and style.

As a result, more than 10 million tons of furniture waste end up in landfills annually in Canada and the United States. While many factors have affected the rise of “fast furniture,” there is also increased awareness of hyper-consumerism, prompting many to think about investing in home pieces that will last longer. In addition, from a consumer standpoint, I’ve noticed a shift in consumerism, especially in interiors, with the rise of the minimalism trend.

Minimalism hybridization

Inspired by the Japandi, Scandinavian and Mid-century modern styles, this new hybrid style highlights a “less is more” approach, and many homeowners are getting on board. There is no doubt that the pandemic affected our view on the functionality of our homes. With so much extra time at home, homeowners focused on creating spaces that were de-cluttered, functional and cosy, with an emphasis on bringing the outdoors inside. Hello plants in every room!
