PACKING TIPS
University and college students across Canada will soon be flooding back to campuses, and when they arrive, there’s all of their stuff. John Prittie, President of Two Men and a Truck – Canada shares six simple steps to ensure easy moving.
PACK RIGHT, PACK LIGHT
The dorms aren’t very big and there isn’t much room for clutter. Try to only pack the essentials with a few decorative items such as pictures of family and high school friends to make it feel more like home.
by JOHN PRITTIE
WHEELS MAKE IT EASIER
Take a cart or box dolly to help you unload and move items from your car or van to the residence.
ITEMS OF A FEATHER, ARE PACKED TOGETHER
Pack similar belongings together; it makes unpacking on arrival much easier for you.
PACK YOUR TOOLS
Buy a tool kit once you get to campus, or bring one from home, because you never know what you might have to put together, take apart or fix.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
A First Aid kit is always helpful. But make sure you’re packing medicines and cleaning supplies separate from your other items.
RECYCLE YOUR MATERIALS
Make sure to break your boxes down and pack them away in a safe and dry place so you can use them when it’s time to move out.
If you don’t want to purchase boxes, rent totes instead. Totes stack so they get the job done well and can be picked up or returned after a move.

SAVE YOU MONEY 6 HACKS TO
If your costs seem to be growing but your wallet isn’t, check out these tips and tricks from Royal Bank of Canada to hack your budget and help keep more money in your pocket.
AUDIT YOUR BILLS:
While it may sound tedious, it’s important to scrutinize your expenses. Take the time to review phone bills, subscriptions and receipts to spot areas where you could be saving.
REWARD YOURSELF:
Leverage rewards cards and programs for your everyday
purchases and expenses, and take advantage of retailers offering extra points when you shop.
CONSOLIDATE DEBTS:
When paying off your credit card isn’t an option, look for opportunities to consolidate your debt to a lower-interest option, like a line of credit.
REDUCE IMPULSE BUYS:
Add a delay-switch to your online shopping. After adding items to your cart, let them stay there for 24 hours before completing the checkout. This will give you time to review
the purchase and reduce impulse buys.
Make sure sales really are sales: Even if something is labelled as a sale, make sure you do your research and shop around for the best price.
TALK ABOUT IT:
There is value in talking about your finances with others. Even if you don’t have a banker on speed dial, you likely have financially savvy people in your network. Pick their brains.

Being an organized person is a never-ending task –whether it’s staying on top of work or handling multiple responsibilities at home. Life can be hectic, so here are a few tricks to keep you calm during the storm.
1. Keep a journal with you to jot down a to-do list or anything you might need to look back on. You can try using note-taking apps on your phone if you don’t like the hassle of bringing a journal everywhere.
2. Colour code your to-do list, calendar and email based on priority or topic. That way, you’ll keep track of deadlines and tasks in an organized and visually appealing way. The colours might even brighten up your day.
3. Plan your meals ahead of time. No matter how busy you get, this is still essential. Plan and make your meals ahead of time so you won’t have to worry about throwing something unhealthy together at the last minute.
4. Take time for yourself. When life gets busy sometimes you just need to take a step back and breathe. Go for a walk and take in the crisp air. Don’t forget to put on something comfortable.
5. Find a space in your house or office to gather all the items you don’t have time to put away. That way once you’re ready to get organized during a decluttering session, you won’t have to clean all areas, but rather just that limited section.

ENHANCE YOUR HOME AND GARDEN WITH
bamboo CANE
by JADE JONES
From functional elements such as borders and fencing, to a beautiful decorative touch in the bedroom, the natural beauty and versatility of bamboo can easily be integrated inside and outside your home.
Inside HEADBOARD
Elevate your bedroom with a new headboard – one made from bamboo canes. Choose from a variety of design choices – stagger the height of the canes for a more organic look or cut them all to the same height for a neater finish. With a bamboo-cane headboard, you can break up a neutral colour scheme, lay them horizontally for a different look or have a dramatically high headboard by standing the canes vertically.
ROOM DIVIDER
Create a gorgeous room divider from bamboo canes by arranging the poles the same length or vary them for a more rustic look. The room divider can be used in the bedroom as a changing area or in the living room or family room to screen off a reading nook. Paint the room divider to match or contrast the decor of the space.
Outside
Enjoy the beauty of bamboo in your garden. Some people hesitate to plant bamboo, as it can be fast-growing and invasive. But the right variety and correct care can add elegance and drama to your outdoor space.
With its impressive height, colour, movement and the sound it makes in the breeze, there is little to rival bamboo for the impact it delivers.
BORDER EDGING
Bamboo canes as edging for borders and pathways add texture and a touch of the exotic to your garden. You can make the edging any height you want. Create a low cane edging to separate your lawn from your flower beds or make it higher for raised areas of the garden.
FENCING
Take the idea of bamboo canes as an edging material one stage further and create a fence. Whether it’s for a decorative fence or one that is functional, the beauty and strength of bamboo is ideal for either purpose. Depending on your DIY skills, there are lots of different designs that you can use.
If you prefer a living fence, plant bamboo in containers and screen off areas of your garden without letting the bamboo get out of control. You can also move the containers around and use them in different parts of your garden for privacy.
