trip to the cottage in this part of the world is a pretty big deal. If you live in or around Winnipeg, there is a very good chance that you are the proud owner of a cottage, or are thinking about purchasing one. Perhaps your family has a favourite spot that you return to each year. For my family, it is the picturesque Wasagaming townsite situated on the shores of Clear Lake in beautiful Riding Mountain National Park. Spending time at lakeside getaways with loved ones is just about as good as it gets! Imagine being able to transfer some of that cottage experience right into your own backyard. It is possible and can be surprisingly inexpensive. If you are the owner of a nice patch of grass, here are some suggestions on how you can create the perfect backyard getaway. If your yard is bare and boring, consider how you can incorporate shrubs, flowers and trees to create a more inviting natural setting. If this is not your area of expertise, visit a professional garden centre or call a landscape professional. They have the knowledge required to make your yard look amazing. Once your space has been infused with a good dose of nature, it’s time to create a seating area that is conducive to enjoying your surroundings. While this may be a deck, screen room or sunroom directly attached to your house, it certainly doesn’t have to be. Perhaps your ideal spot is situated in the far corner of your yard, nestled in between some trees and bushes. Once you have built your deck, screen room or sunroom, consider what kind of furnishings will work best for your family. The selection of high quality outdoor furnishings is vast, so take your time when shopping. An outdoor bar and barbeque will also help to create the ultimate outdoor hangout zone. This type of project allows you to enjoy nature in a relaxed setting at the place most convenient to you – your home. Enjoying your outdoor oasis couldn’t be easier and no long road trips are required! Enjoy your summer and happy renovating!

DESIGNER JO ALCORN CREATES A COOL AND COSY OUTDOOR SPACE ON A BUDGET

ackyard spaces are front and centre this season, as we are faced with new pandemic restrictions. With the recent price increases in lumber, furniture and all things outdoors, I want to give homeowners some tips on utilizing what they have by adding a few new things to change the look of the outdoor space, while keeping things budget-friendly.

When it came to my clients on this project, they really didn’t like their original space; it was cluttered, there were no defined zones, and it lacked inspiration. Although the deck needed to be replaced, like many others, these clients were not ready to pay double the lumber price, so a fresh coat of paint modernized this dated deck. Paint goes a long way to freshen things

up. The conversation set is more than 15 years old, but the shape and cushion colour were still perfect. With a bit of elbow grease and a can of matte black spray paint, they were able to freshen it up to look sleek and modern. I wanted this outdoor space to work from day to night, so lighting was essential to take afternoon drinks into the twilight hour. I grabbed these Edison LED string lights and Hurricane

Lanterns from Rona and Lowe’s (their curbside pick-up is simple and makes me feel safe when shopping). They give off a warm, inviting light that can take you from dusk to evening. To take it a step further in the outdoor experience, I added a gorgeous outdoor wooden bar creating another zone and focal point. Now, if it only came with a bartender! Growing your own food is becoming a trend among many, whether you have a yard or a small patio. Rona’s modular and vertical planters ensure you have fresh herbs and veggies, no matter your outdoor size. This system is also great for those just getting into the green thumb lifestyle. Bonus: They match the decor perfectly. I love when a design comes together seamlessly. What’s a backyard space without a barbecue? While gas or propane grills

are the norm, my client really wanted to try his hand at a charcoal grill. This gorgeous 22-in. black charcoal Kettle Grill by Weber is a sleek design and easy to move around – perfect for this space. I brought in textured pieces to really finish off the space and add that cosy feeling. I added some two-toned throw cushions in stunning burnt orange and black and white from Lowe’s. I defined the fireplace area and upper deck sitting space with rugs from Lowe’s, as well, to truly define the zones for a comfortable feature. From lounging in the conversation area under the pergola, to toasting marshmallows at the fire pit, to grilling burgers and grabbing a drink at the bar, this backyard space is sure to get lots of use this summer and be a little home away from home.

Get off the ground with raised beds and green walls

by MARK AND BEN CULLEN ardens are no longer limited to the ground. Everything still begins with good soil, of course, but recent trends have seen the act of gardening moving into raised beds and climbing up walls. Literally. Raised bed gardens and green walls are two popular trends in gardening – and for good reason. On the practical front, the benefits are multifold. Raised beds warm up faster in the spring, which helps extend the gardening season. They are also tidier than traditional garden beds – they are easier to mulch between navigable pathways and less susceptible to weed pressure that can creep along at ground level. Building a raised bed also presents an opportunity to improve soil quality with something decent where your

growing conditions are subpar – simply build your raised bed and backfill with a better-quality medium. Green walls are practical for their ability to maximize space and light – especially in an urban setting where both are scarce. Indoor green walls have the added benefit of improving air quality and dampening noise in public and semi-public spaces. For the chef, an indoor green wall can provide immediate and year-round access to fresh herbs and compact vegetables. The standout benefit to both elevated forms of gardening is accessibility – by building raised beds or installing a green wall, you are bringing the plants closer to you and everyone who benefits from your efforts. There is a reason why “enabling gardens” – those used

in horticultural therapy to improve mental, physical and emotional health – feature raised beds so prominently. Being closer to plants is good for us, and happens to make for easier upkeep. On the design side, raised beds and green walls offer unlimited creative potential. Raised beds can bring an architectural element to otherwise cluttered vegetable gardens, by using quality materials and employing some basic design geometry. Green walls “painted” with coloured foliage and varied plant textures can impart an impressive look. The beauty of plants is all around us – so why not bring it up close by elevating your garden with a raised bed or green wall? You may be surprised how much it elevates your space!

iving a luxury cottage lifestyle doesn’t mean you need to give up all of the functionality and durability you need while in the wild woods. My latest cottage project is the perfect example of this. Come along to see how you, too, can create luxury living at your home away from home. Cottages are notorious for having furniture that is not to scale. This

by MICHELLE BERWICK often results from a collection of hand-me-downs or pieces that no longer work at the main residence. Before you bring all of your old furniture into your cottage, plan out the rooms. Ask yourself, how are we going to move through the areas? How are we going to use this space overall? How many people are going to be in this area at any given time? Use the answers to these questions to

dictate where you are going to start placing of the furniture. No one wants to worry about sticky little fingers or wet bathing suits during the dog days of summer. Now, we know what you’re thinking... there’s an awful lot of light fabrics in this project. Yes, they aren’t just your average fabrics; they are a high-performance variety that are highly durable and stain-resistant. Most furniture retailers

offer their upholstered pieces in high-performance fabric. You can go with something a little lighter and brighter to create that lifted, luxury look this way. Most of the time at the cottage, you want a clear view of the scenery. If you want to bring in a touch of luxury, you can frame your windows with floor-to-ceiling drapes. This does a few things for your space. If placed correctly, they will give the illusion of a larger window and soften the room for a more finished look. If you have a smaller window, think about using a nice and simple flat roman blind; they look pretty while drawn up or let down, and provide excellent privacy. The goal is not to take away from the everchanging seasonal views, but to provide a pretty frame for the outside views. I incorporated natural materials in this cottage, but in a sophisticated way. A two-storey granite fireplace is the centrepiece of this luxe space. This natural stone plays off of the natural rocky landscape this cottage is built on. Wood, stone, concrete and natural textiles all work together in creating

a harmonious interior without feeling too heavy. The best way to create a comfy, cosy and high-end feel in your home away from home is with the scale of furnishings. Choosing furniture, rugs, art and decor that goes with each room’s size is one of the reasons this family cottage project turned out so cohesive and stunning. I didn’t want this cottage to scream, “I’m a cottage.” Instead, I went for a subtle classic, rustic, modern and contemporary approach to the final styling. I mixed in several metals, textures and materials to allow this gem to come together.

renovation projects undertaken in Manitoba over the past year at the MHBA’s annual RenoMark Renovation of the Year Awards. This year, entries were featured in seven different award categories – Additions, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Exteriors, Whole House, Outdoor Structure, and Basement. Each projected nominated for the RenoMark Renovation Awards is as stunning display of what professional renovators can do in terms of updating and upgrading your home. This year’s Award winners were announced virtually at the premier of the MHBA’s 2021 Virtual Renovation Awards video on June 3, 2021. This year, 72 different projects by 16 outstanding MHBA RenoMark renovators were nominated for awards. Each entry consisted of before and after photos, blueprints and drawings, a detailed description of the work done, design details and any additional information that might contribute to this comprehensive package. Judging was done by a panel of judges who reviewed every entry in every category. Everybody has been spending more time at home over the past year. As we do, many are taking this as a great time to get that home renovation project underway. Whether it’s something that they have been longing to improve in their kitchen or a bathroom that needs updating, Manitobans have been investing into their homes during the pandemic. This second ﬂoor addition was a great way to add extra space indoors, and also outside too! The clients wanted to enjoy not only the interior of the additional space, but also wanted to add an exterior second ﬂoor open deck for those warm sunny morning coffees! We created a beautiful space - both indoors and out! The exterior deck has a fabulous pergola style covering on a portion of the space, and a fantastic louvered privacy wall to allow in just enough sunlight when needed, and to block it out when not!

Objective: Increase existing living space, and provide main floor laundry. Solution: Construct a 500 square foot, 2nd story, master suite addition, and turn existing main floor bedroom, into the new laundry room. The master suite includes an oversized master bedroom, walk in closet, and luxurious ensuite. Solid hardwood floors, and painted hand rails give the space a warm, traditional feel. The ensuite bathroom incorporates heated plank style flooring, custom tiled shower, and a unique copper vessel sink to compliment the Farmhouse feel. The stunning claw foot tub is the crowning jewel, and draws the eye as you enter the space!

This client wanted a larger kitchen and living space to entertain family and friends. The addition had to incorporate the look and style of the 108 year old stone and brick house. A large 18’ wide opening was made into the brick walls to allow a large open space to the addition which features a large porcelain top island, chilled wine room, decorative wood beams and custom milled oak trims to match the existing ﬁnishes.

The clients had purchased the property over 4 years ago not only for the location but for the amazingly spacious backyard nestled against the Assiniboine River. Their goal was to have an amazing indoor/outdoor entertaining space that would be their own private oasis. The addition was only part of the plan to the full extensive backyard transformation that ended up including a custom pool, built in bbq area with pergola, outdoor ﬁre pit and waterfall. The addition indoor space includes a custom gas ﬁreplace, heated porcelain tile, custom bar, custom walnut cabinets, bench seating and vaulted ceilings.

This repeat client wanted to give their bungalow a fully functioning basement that was an extension of living space. Creating a dedicated laundry room with lots of storage was priority #1. A mix of modern cabinets, quartz countertops and lots of farm house style wood work added warm personal touches to the space. A large bathroom with oversized spa style shower and matte black ﬁnishes were some of the features of this development. The expanded living space included lots of recessed lighting, a new bedroom, large rec-room area and lots of storage making this everything our client had hoped for.

This Betsworth (Charleswood) home, originally built in 1960 and overlooking a large yard now has significantly more living space thanks to a home addition. The addition added an additional 600 sq of living space including a full primary bedroom suite with walk-in closet and ensuite, as well as a new entry and family room. Additionally, an attached garage and gorgeous sunroom with wood-burning stove were also added, making this a wonderful forever home. Hardwood floors throughout the main floor are accented by luxury vinyl tile in the entries, bathrooms, and sunroom.

A 1999 custom built home waited 21 years to ﬁnally have its basement developed…and did it ever get developed! The client had a few goals: a big bedroom for their teenaged daughter, along with a full bathroom, a small, easily accessible room for the spare fridge and freezer, maintain some storage, and to have a great, functional family hang out space! We worked with them to tick all of their boxes, along with a few additional design touches. Not to be forgotten - a massive walk-in closet that we are sure has her friends (and her sister) feeling very jealous!

The fixtures and finishes in this ensuite bathroom were original to the home, and so it was long past due for an upgrade. First to go was the large corner jacuzzi, which was replaced by a new soaker tub with floor mounted filler. Next in line were the fixtures, vanity top, and shower. Glass sliding shower doors provided the perfect unobstructed view of the new tiled shower beyond. To keep within the budget, the existing vanity remained, and was refitted with new shaker style doors. And finally, modern vinyl plank flooring replaced the old linoleum, providing the perfect finishing touch.

With no immediate need for another bedroom, we were able to knock down some walls, and go all in with this one-of-a-kind bathroom expansion & renovation! The patterned tile floors provide a unique canvas for this luxurious retreat, while the custom shower and detailed wainscoting immediately lets you know that this bathroom is something special! The stylish wall mounted faucets, and crisp white cabinets help to complete the modern design, that has a distinctly traditional feel. And finally, the large soaker tub, can’t help but to draw the eye, and provides the perfect finishing touch!

DE VRIES CONSTRUCTION & RENOVATION Judging by the dated ﬁnishes, this main bathroom needed an update to suite the look of the rest of our clients home. Choosing a classic white marble style tile and soaker tub became the main focus. Adding a recessed niche and maintaining clean clear lines, the black grout and ﬁxtures were accentuated by a subtle grey tone paint and by adding recessed lights we brightened up the space. A New Bidet/Toilet combo was added as well as a fashionable mirror over a marble top open storage vanity and recessed medicine cabinet. Grouted LVT was installed to complete the look.

Log Home with Modern & Stylish Upgrades! In this renovation we removed a 36” white acrylic corner shower and created a larger customtiled 60x36” shower designed with a beautiful slate tile feature wall that provides a waterfall effect from the rainhead and handheld ﬁxtures in a complimentary matte black ﬁnish. An old dresser was repurposed into a fully functional 60” vanity with black quartz countertop, handmade ceramic vessel sink and paired with a matte black vessel faucet. Pendent Lighting through-out the room completely brighten the once dark space and allows the beauty of the wood walls and ceiling to shine.

Bright, modern and functional was the goal for this renovation. The clients home consistent of a narrow biscuit tub which did not allow much space for showering. We replaced with a low-threshold 60x32” shower base, seamless cultured marble walls and frameless clear shower doors. The 64” countertop spanned between two walls but only housed a 30” vanity and left much unused space. This was replaced with a freestanding 60” vanity, quartz countertop and double undermount sinks. Atop is a stylish framed mirror to deﬁne the space and to highlight the tones of the wood vanity and the stylish lighting above.

Our client wanted to improve the aesthetic of their home and take the curb appeal to the next level. By reinforcing the existing roof structure we were able to create 2 front gables making the house have more “WOW” factor to match the well manicured landscaping in their yard. Perfectly matching the limestone facade and installing full ice and water protection with a striking red clay tile architectural shingle, made sure their home would be water tight and give them a look closer to the European villa they wanted.

This River Property project started off as a 415 square foot attached garage addition and a 205 square foot addition above the garage however as this project progresses it turned into a complete exterior refresh as well. The white stucco and painted grey wood siding was replaced with a combination of hardie board and batten siding as well as horizontal KWP engineered wood siding. The existing white garage door was replaced with a beautiful wood grain door. The ﬁnal touch was replacing the stucco columns at the front entrance with this amazing custom timber frame entrance.

This renovation of an older home was very in-depth. . The space was stripped, rebuilt new walls, ceiling and floor as nothing was level or plumb. We incorporated heated tile floor to create a spa like feel, ceramic 12’’ by 36’’ wainscoting and ceramic subway tile all the way to the ceiling. This bathroom features a luxurious freestanding tub with air jets, free standing tub filler, wall mounted faucet over a vessel sink, custom painted maple cabinets with beautiful quartz tops with two wall sconces surface mounted on the mirror for an extra design detail. Check out that floor tile!

The exterior on the back of this home received a total transformation from its original white stucco and basic backyard. The clients aspirations were to transform their back yard into an indoor/outdoor entertaining oasis and it was imperative that the exterior correspond to the new look and feel. The transformation began with the addition of the 4 season sunroom at the posterior side of the home. A split modular stack stone was chosen to add some texture and dimension. Corresponding eaves fascia and soffits to the original home were chosen for continuity as well as white pvc windows.

This kitchen project involved removing a load bearing wall to open up the main floor, new flooring, and creating a new feature wall. After properly engineering the process, a structural permit was pulled with the city, the wall was removed, and an appropriate beam was put in place. The clients chose grey coloured cabinets, quartz countertops, and a unique teal accented tile backsplash and teal countertop appliances to match! A sharp looking vinyl plank flooring was installed throughout, and a new tiled feature wall with a large screen TV and fireplace were also added. Absolutely stunning!

A growing family, and a shift in how this space was being used, required that changes be made, and thinking outside of the box proved to be worthwhile exercise. Completing the design work remotely was an added challenge. The old pealing cabinets were replaced with new shaker style cabinets, and a subway tile backsplash helped to complete the modern farmhouse look. Stipple ceilings were removed, and luxury vinyl tile was the ﬂooring of choice. A custom eat in table, complete with built in seating and butcher block top, make this the perfect multi use surface, and set this kitchen apart!

When Old meets New - the original farmhouse sitting just off Henderson Hwy surrounded by all new homes sits this classic farmhouse that required a structural cosmetic facelift to the kitchen as a new focal point. It started with major demo of existing brick ﬁreplace that ran 3 ﬂoors out the roof down to basement. Once this task was completed a major 24’ LVL beam helped create the new open kitchen concept to the living/ dining space making it a true entertainers delight. We used original Barnwood from the family farm to create a memory of time on the columns??

This project began as a four-season addition of the original dining room of this 1977 twostorey home. During the addition process it became apparent that the ﬂow and function of the kitchen and home could be dramatically enhanced. The original kitchen was not more then 4 years old, so the decision was made to repurpose as much as possible. The clients wanted a much brighter and lighter kitchen from the original. New cabinets were ordered in areas that were extended and new door fronts for existing areas. White quartz counters were added, a herringbone backsplash and Walnut details.

The kitchen was original from 1993 and was definitely in need of an update and subsequent refresh. The old kitchen was cramped and definitely did not reflect the 4000 square foot overall home. The wall between the dining area and kitchen was removed as well as a small powder room was re-situated. This allowed for a much more significant kitchen footprint and for more of an open concept feel. The two-tone cabinets give the space a little drama, while the walnut accents warm up the space. The tin ceiling anchors this space making it the heart of the home.

With a growing family a functional, organized kitchen is a must. The original layout of this kitchen did not meet these requirements, so it was time for a change. By re-locating a doorway, we were able to extend the kitchen and almost double the countertop space. A separate prep/microwave area was also added to provide more functional space to work. With the abundance of drawers in the lower cabinets we were able to eliminate the uppers and added floating shelves, making this kitchen more open and inviting. A hex tile floor finishes of this beautiful, functional new kitchen.

This project was an incredible transformation. The existing covered deck was “well loved” but was falling apart! The clients really enjoy spending time outside in the summer, but want to avoid pesky bugs and mosquitos - so a new, screened in deck was desperately needed! The photos speak for themselves, as we transformed an old, dilapidated structure into a new, inviting space! A composite material was used as the base, and a beautiful pergola with polycarbonate rooﬁng panels was built above. We added a screen around the perimeter to enjoy the outdoors without the worry of mosquitos. Simply stunning!

Our summers are short, and our mosquitoes are abundant, and so our objective was to create a space that would address both of these issues. The solution was a stunning, 3 season sunroom! On the inside, the warm traditional feel of pine, the subtle ambience created by indirect lighting, and the energy efficiency of triple pane windows and skylights, all helped to create a space that truly stands out from the pack. And the heated ceramic ﬂoor ensures that even on those crisp autumn days, this room is still the perfect cozy spot to curl up with a good book.

Our client wanted to take advantage of large rear yard space backing onto the adjacent golf course. The wish list included an outdoor kitchen, outdoor fireplace, a large maintenance free deck, and a large-scale pergola that would allow unobstructed views outward from home. Another aspect of the project was protection from stray golf balls that would often make their way onto the property. The final design had the large 10ft high pergola flanked on both sides by the outdoor kitchen and outdoor fireplace.

This 3-season river view retreat adds beautiful, comfortable living space for homeowners to enjoy warm Manitoba weather while the lazy Red River flows by. Natural wood materials were selected to integrate inside with the outside and include: Cedar clad main beam, T&G cedar ceiling, Floating fir wood shelves inside and out, Fir casings around windows, 1/2” fir clad posts. A floor-to-ceiling 4-track weather wall window system was installed on all river-facing windows. Each of the four panels slide up and down independently to allow for as much airflow as desired. Added touches include: Metal Juilette balcony railing, dual ceiling fans.

Our objective was to reconfigure the existing space, and provide a much needed update to an aging home. By removing a partition wall between the foyer and dining room, and closing off a secondary kitchen doorway, we were able to improve traffic flow, and increase the amount of cabinet storage in the kitchen. The new kitchen boasts custom shaker cabinets, stunning quartz counter tops, tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances. Additional upgrades include a fully remodelled bath complete with jetted soaker tub, new solid wood interior doors, custom built in closet organizer, and refinished hardwood flooring throughout.

This client, now a good family friend came to us with a dream. They had been imagining this renovation for years and wanted to preserve the feel of their 1950’s home while incorporating a modern kitchen update. This was accomplished by working with our in-house designer. The construction involved a complete gut of the space along with removing a load bearing wall and a complete re-wire. The maple cabinets with a stained weathered slate ﬁnish and gold accents really complete the look. The LED undercabinet lighting and pot lights create ambiance and an inviting feel in this beautiful fresh space!

Our clients wanted their childhood family home renovated to meet the needs of their growing family. They wanted to update the home while creating an open, spacious layout with a separate master suite and private bath, and main ﬂoor laundry. We removed the support wall and wrapped the structural beam in barn wood, to facilitate a rustic style. A new kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and convenient laundry created a functional and stylish design. New paint and ﬂooring were added throughout. Plumbing and electrical upgrades were necessary, and will ensure years of enjoyment in their new space.

This Betsworth (Charleswood) home, originally built in 1960 and overlooking a large yard was fully renovated, including adding a substantial amount of living space. The renovation of the existing home included three bedrooms, a formal dining room and living room, and a chef-worthy kitchen with stone countertops and an oversized gas range. An addition added an attached garage, sunroom (with woodburning stove), mudroom, family room, and a primary bedroom suite with walk-in closet and ensuite. Hardwood ﬂoors throughout the main ﬂoor are accented by luxury vinyl tile in the entries, bathrooms, and sunroom.

This bungalow, built in 1973, was fully renovated and now boasts an enlarged kitchen with stone countertops and an island with built-in seating. The primary bedroom’s ensuite was renovated, and the entire main floor was refreshed. A mudroom addition, including a dog was station, was added which joins the attached garage to the home. The basement was developed and includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, wet bar, gas fireplace, seating area, and a home gym. This home had significant structural issues related to a prior renovation (by a prior owner) which were discovered during planning and were corrected during construction.

fter selling their cottage, my city client’s desire to have an outdoor getaway at home, where they could relax and enjoy being outside, inspired the renovation of their backyard. Before the redesign, the backyard fell short and did little to encourage their outdoor living aspirations. With my landscape design ideas and the interior design help of Erin Feasby and Cindy Bleeks of Feasby & Bleeks Design, the family

can now dine, cook, lounge, entertain and swim in their newly renovated backyard. The homeowners didn’t want to see a wooden fence surrounding the perimeter of the yard. They wanted lots of green to fill in the space and make it feel like a cottage in the city. We went with a planting palette of greens, whites, yellows and purples and kept a good-sized patch of sod for the family dog. We used various plants and flowers from boxwoods to black-eyed Susans and even lined the property

with green cedars and pyramidal European hornbeams to give that green backdrop they were looking for. We also included a couple of eastern white pines – a nostalgic reminder to the homeowner’s cottage. We placed potted plants around the pool to add extra greenery to the expansive patio. We planted topicals, perennials and annuals. Some of the plants will die in the winter, but the homeowner may choose to put seasonal cuttings in the planters for winter interest when the snow flies.

New fencing, some made from pressure-treated stained pine and some in black aluminium, keeps it open and airier. The wood fence was stained a dark colour, which helps the fence recede into the background. The backyard is paved with Permacon, an engineered material, in a light grey colour. Due to the freeze-thaw cycle of Toronto, the pavers were dry-laid in an aggregate base. There are so many great seating areas around the backyard. One is an area with a natural gas firepit beside the pool – a nice spot to relax in the evenings and well into the fall season. The furniture was repurposed from the family cottage and updated with new outdoor fabrics. For a bit of formality, we added a boxwood hedge around the

dining patio along with planters that include fresh herbs. The homeowner loved the large maple tree trunks on her neighbour’s property, so we used aluminum fencing so as not to hide the trunks. To connect this patio to the one around the pool, we used four large pavers pushed together to create lovely, large stepping-stones. Sod in between the stepping-stones adds a hit of green between the two patios. The back corner of the yard is a lounge sitting area, complete with a sectional sofa, coffee table and lots of great shade cast by the cantilevered umbrella. This corner is a cosy nook that acts as the backyard’s living room. Overall, this backyard is a green oasis, a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

One thing you can do to keep your favourite travel spot top of mind is to incorporate some of the destination’s quintessential looks into your home. Maybe it’s a set of black and white striped pillows a la Parisian chic or a vibrant Pendleton blanket reminiscent of the American Southwest – decor has the ability to transport you to a place you love. This season, I’m enjoying the vacay vibes of modern desert style. The modern desert look is inspired by an earthy palette – which feels so fresh after a long, dark winter, I can almost feel the desert sun. The look encompasses muted colours, paired with light wood accents, organic cacti shapes and a bold mix of patterns. While most of us will be staycationing this summer, keep those travel dreams alive; soon, they will be a reality once again.

his family cottage was designed and built from the ground up in remote cottage country. When returning clients approached me regarding this project, they needed serious help. They had just purchased this gorgeous piece of land, with a dilapidated cottage on it. The existing property was small, mouldy and beyond repair. My clients were seeking a place that had an open-concept, family feel with a few critical items on their wishlist, including laundry, storage and a screened-in porch. Both the architectural and interior requirements ensured that the cottage felt rustic, relaxed and not fussy. They did not want it to look like a fancy home away from home, but rather a casual cottage

that would be fun, practical and exude the feeling of comfort. The main floor is an openconcept space, with the living room on one end and the kitchen on the other, while the dining room anchors in between. The kitchen design is informal and functional, with a sizeable island perfect for congregating and sitting for a casual meal. The contrast of the walnut island and walnut detail on the hood breaks away from the timeless, white shaker kitchen by warming up the space and giving it a custom feel. The kitchen backsplash is a natural, chiselled stone that feels organic and rustic. It ties the entire look together, bringing a little of the exterior natural rock indoors. The oversized dining room has a large farmhouse style table with bentwood and wicker chairs,

reminiscent of the industrial era. Similarly, the linear light fixture comprising of black metal and glass

also mimics that factory feel – giving this space a casual dining appeal for a large group of friends and family. The adjacent living room, with its L-shaped sectional sofa, is a great place to relax and enjoy the wood-burning fire. The furnishings for this family room are comfy and paired down; the rug has a worn-in distressed quality to it, and the pillows

also tie in the look with casual cotton, linen and wool fabrics. The look has a bit of that Canadiana feel, with its red and white colour palette. The screened-in porch is a secondary gathering area for those warm summer nights, with all the dining and living area functions. It allows the summer breeze to penetrate through the space, while protecting from mosquitoes. The look in the screened-in porch has a shabby-chic feel. A few beautifully

styled rattan furniture pieces are paired with some high-quality chairs, miss-matched furniture finds, and unique pieces sourced from a few local antique stores. The design of the entire home was made to feel casual, easy and provide a calming atmosphere. From the architecture, to the interiors, as well as the final touches, every discipline meshes in a harmonious manner to create a dream cottage that’s worth escaping to.
