WE’RE YOUR GO-TO GUIDE FOR RENTING I don’t much care for braggarts, so I was hesitant to write such a bold headline. After all, if I’m going to make such a definitive statement, I’d better back it up with some evidence, right? To be honest, I have not done an exhaustive search of what’s out there in terms of a comprehensive, onestop guide to finding great rentals and pertinent rental information. What I do know, is that Renters Guide is where you’ll truly find everything you’ll need, all in one place. Twice a month, this magazine hits the streets with its pages filled with rental opportunities from a wide range of properties throughout Winnipeg that meet a diversity of needs, lifestyles and budgets. And in between the ads are helpful articles from industry experts to help you with your rental search. In this issue of Renters Guide, we cover everything from how to prepare for your next move, to tips on getting you and your family organized and what to look for in a rental if you don’t work a typical nine-to-five shift. When it comes to ensuring a successful move, timing is everything! So the first question to ask is, are you moving yourself, or will you hire movers? Be sure to book the moving company or truck at least a month ahead, if not more. Next, are you going to do the packing or let the professionals do the job for you? If you are thinking DIY, start collecting/buying boxes and packing material. Professional movers usually sell standard-sized boxes that are sturdy and easy to stack, as well as paper that can protect your items without leaving newsprint behind. Finally, which of your belongings do you want/need to move? Why not purge all of those unnecessary items you don’t need? The following is a handy reference for what to do when. A MONTH BEFORE THE MOVE …
• De-clutter, pitch, give away, donate — whatever — but pare down your goods. • Obtain change-of-address cards from the post office. • Notify magazines, insurance companies, banks, credit card companies, schools, employers, etc. of your change of address. • If you are moving to a new home or condo that includes appliances, ask for the owner’s manuals ahead of time. 24 Renters Guide | Sept. 13–27, 2019

• Make a closet of items you will need to clean the place once furniture is moved (broom, dustpan, cleansers, etc.). • Either start packing or make sure your mover begins. Rental tips foR people who don’t have a 9 to 5 schedule
Jackie maRchildon When you have to get up early for work, you don’t appreciate it when your neighbour plays music a little too late or seems to be catching up on housework. But “early” and “late” are defined differently for everyone, depending on work schedules. The world does not function on nine-to-fivers alone. There are many jobs that demand roundthe-clock workers — doctors, nurses, waiters, bartenders, flight attendants, police officers — the list goes on. As a shift worker, your sleep cycle is likely disrupted by the everyday hustle and bustle of your neighbours, in the same way theirs would be disrupted by your routine in the middle of the night. For those of you who rent and are on an off-schedule, here are some tips on how to survive rental life. Buy earplugs
Earplugs are great even if you don’t work shifts! A friend of mine with roommates swears by them. Generally speaking, most cities do not allow excessive noise before 7 a.m. or after 11 p.m., so if your sleep pattern falls in between those times, earplugs will save you hours of tossing and turning. If you normally come home from work around 4 a.m., wind down and go to bed around 5 a.m., only to then be woken up by the family upstairs prepping for their day, a good pair of earplugs will help you sleep through the commotion. 32 Renters Guide | Sept. 13–27, 2019
avoid a unit with southern exposure
For some, a southern exposure unit is a highly coveted rental spot because it garners more sunlight than others. But for a shift worker, it’s best to avoid. While sunlight is important, and especially so if lack of light depresses you, it can also make it hard for you to sleep if you are working off-hours. Look for a unit that benefits your schedule. try to secure a corner unit
If you’re looking to rent in a building, choose a corner unit so you can set up your bedroom in a room that doesn’t share a wall with anyone. This will avoid the usual noises heard between thin walls in buildings, and ultimately help avoid frustration between neigbours. talk to your neighBours
There are some noise rules that exist, but for the most part, they do not benefit the overnight worker.
Let your neighbours know your schedule to warn them of any everyday noise on your end. This will (hopefully) encourage them to be aware of their own regular noise in the morning when they are getting ready or when they are coming home in the evening. It can be hard to work in shifts — if you get home from work at 11 p.m. and need to clean your house, will your neighbours mind if you pull out the vacuum? Talk to each other. Just because you don’t work 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. doesn’t mean you should have to give up your routine, but you also need to be mindful — and so do your neighbours. become a serious health hazard and your landlord is responsible for getting rid of them. If you’ve already tried to fix the problem with a product from the hardware store but have had no success, tell your landlord. He or she is obliged to hire a professional exterminator. Most landlords want to help, as it’s in their best interest to keep their properties clean. If your landlord is reluctant to do anything, the local health department can aid you in handling the pest problem. Although you may never be
disturbed by carpenter ants or silverfish, it’s a good idea to learn how to identify pests, their risks and how to get rid of them.
