I’ve said this before, and I will repeat it here: I am a renter at heart. As I get older, I admit the actual moving process can be tedious, but the prospect of finding a new place to live still fills me with excitement. There are people who prefer to stay in the same place for a long time, and I get that, especially when children are in the mix. But as my children grew, their needs changed, and for me, that meant finding a new rental. When they were youngsters, I wanted a home with a yard located close to parks where they could run around and play. It also had to be near their elementary school. During the high school and college years, living close to public transit suited us better. That way my daughters could easily get to school and friends on their own, or downtown for weekend entertainment. Finally, when one child moved into her own place, I needed less space and the hunt for a new apartment began. Not only did each move accommodate our new stages in life, it gave us the opportunity to decorate and get creative. It didn’t have to be anything big or expensive; a new side table, window treatments, or something as simple as putting the furniture in a new configuration. Moving allowed my children to make any place they lived in feel comfortable and homey. Winnipeg is a great city for renters. Let Renters Guide help you find your next great space to get creative.

Living with roommates has many benefits but it can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables such as toilet paper,
food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper.

It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier.

You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. Be clear — I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next. Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning
supplies and anything else you might share. ThE slush funD: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for take-out (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount

Apartments were once seen as a place for the young, or those who couldn’t buy, but now it’s a welcome and affordable lifestyle choice and more people are opting for urban convenience, smaller spaces they can call “home.” Going compact can be daunting for some, says Marie Potter, marketing director for Professional Organizers in Canada. “One way to approach small-space living is to enjoy the benefits. Simply put, less space means less things, less mess, less stress and more time.” Tips To TransiTion inTo a compacT home:
Office If you need a home office (or at least a work space), it’s essential to have a filing system versus a piling system. Invest in a decent, compact filing cabinet on wheels that tucks under the desk. You’ll have every file at your fingertips if you set it up with hanging file folders and tabs in alphabetical order. If you don’t have a desk, use floating shelves and magazine holders, or a wall organizer to manage papers vertically. Stack and label clear bins with supplies on a shelf. Use limited colour palettes, plain white or mirrors to create the illusion of space. Seek multipurpose furniture such as an ottoman that can be used as an all-in-one foot rest, table and storage unit. Bathroom Hang a clear shower curtain or use a clear liner with mesh pockets behind it to store your bathroom necessities. Install a towel rack at the back of the tub, like you see in hotels. Have plenty of hooks to keep clothes off the floor. Stack clear, labelled bins under the sink for added storage. Bedroom Condo beds are all the rage for good reason: The mattress platform lifts up using pressurized pistons, so you can store and easily access belongings inside
it. Otherwise, use under-the-bed bins for seasonal storage. Only have one set of sheets and towels, and just stay on top of laundry. Over-the-door hooks and a shoe organizer are a must. Thin-design flock hangers create 30 per cent more space than plastic or wood hangers. If the bedroom is really tiny, consider using curtains instead of bi-fold closet doors, or simply remove the closet doors for an open-concept closet. Bonus tips Watch ‘Tiny Houses’ and read ‘Everything that Remains’ by minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus.
