Living alone KaThryn Kusyszyn To have a room of one’s own, as famously championed by Virginia Woolf, is a necessity for a woman writer. In modern times, more women (and men), whether writers or not, are taking advantage of financial independence to enjoy the benefits of solitary living. In our overcrowded world, with incessant advertising, stimulation and pollution of all sorts, living alone provides a sanctuary for the soul. It’s a respite for the individual who needs to recharge, with somewhat surprising social and creative implications. Primary among the benefits of living alone is the freedom afforded to come and go as one likes, do as one pleases, and not answer to anyone. There is no need to deal with others’ preferences in the areas of music, food, decorating, entertainment, temperature and above all, cleanliness. Only one person’s mess to clean up, one person’s laundry, one person’s dishes… ah, heavenly! Other perks are privacy and the opportunity for full self-expression. No one is present to cramp one’s style. Wandering the house in all manner of (un)dress is perfectly acceptable, as is ordering in at 3 a.m., having spontaneous dance parties, and leaving the dishes unwashed for days. likely to be written without the distraction of others. When one does desire company, it is by choice. Eric Klinenberg, author of the book The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, found that people who lived alone spent more time with friends and neighbours than married couples. Apparently, so-called ‘loners’ have the best of both worlds; quiet when they want it and company when they want it. The benefit of guaranteed quiet at home is a welcome contrast to the outside world. Especially for introverts, who recharge by spending time alone, this living arrangement is desirable and potentially essential for their wellbeing. Home becomes an oasis, a place of restorative solitude. A single inhabitant home can

also be a castle. Knowing that everything is just where one left it (excepting mischievous pets), is a feature not available to multi-person households. It’s grounding and stabilizing. Not to mention that the last piece of cake is never eaten by someone else. So if you think about it, for reasons of social health, peace of mind, self-expression and creativity, solitary living is on the upswing. Virginia would certainly approve. Eight energy-saving idEas

for renters Whether you rent an apartment, townhouse or a home, these tips will help you to be more energy efficient and save money. If there are things you can’t change on your own, share these tips and encourage your landlord to make a change for the better. 1. Lighting is one of the easiest places to start saving energy. Replacing your five most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with Energy Star certified LED lights can save more than $65 a year in energy costs. • Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Turning off just one 60-watt incandescent bulb that would otherwise burn eight hours a day can save about $15 a year! 2. Considering purchasing a room air conditioner? Buy an Energy Star-qualified model. It will use at least 10 per cent less energy than standard models. Be sure the unit fits tightly in the window so outdoor air does not get in. 3. Consumer electronics play an increasingly larger role in your home’s energy consumption, accounting for 15 per cent of household electricity use. Many electronics use energy even when switched off. Unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use (like your cell phone charger!). Use a power strip as a central “turn off” point when you are done using equipment. Using a power strip for your computer and all peripheral equipment allows you to completely disconnect the power supply from the power source, eliminating standby power consumption. 4. A 10-minute shower can use less water than a full bath. With a low-flow showerhead, a 10-minute shower will use about 25 gallons of water, saving five gallons of water over a typical bath. A new showerhead will also save energy — up to $145 each year on electricity — beating out both the bath and an oldfashioned showerhead.

5. To keep out the heat of the summer sun, close window shades and drapes during the day. 6. Run the dishwasher with a full load and use the air-dry option if available. 7. Wash your laundry with cold water whenever possible. To save water, try to wash full loads or, if you must wash a partial load, reduce the level of water appropriately. Washing full loads can save you more than 3,400 gallons of water each year. 8. Don’t over-dry your clothes. Remember to clean the lint trap before every load. Dry full loads or reduce drying time for partial loads. One of the easiest things to increase drying efficiency is to clean the lint trap before each and every load. This step can also save up to $34 a year.

When you hire movers, you’re entrusting your possessions to someone so they can get them from your old apartment to your new one. Do you know what you’ll need? We do. Here are our tips for hiring movers. 1. A GOOD, DETAILED CONTRACT

A contract ensures and outlines all expectations. This is particularly true when you hire professional movers. You’re obviously the “who,” and your gorgeous new apartment is obviously the “why,” but they also need to know exactly “what,” “where,” and “when” in order to transport your items to your new place. There are usually a lot of details, and finding out about them on moving day is counterproductive. Think ahead. 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH

The first thing to do is find a reputable mover. Check online with the Better Business Bureau or the Canadian Association of Movers, and of course, ask friends and family members to refer companies they have used. Select a company that has a triedand-true track record. When they meet you to arrange your move, they need to know about everything you expect to take so they can prepare as accurate an estimate as possible. Insurance and liability, additional charges, any exemptions. 3. TELL THEM EVERYTHING

If there’s an extra stop to drop something off, it’s extra time and will add to the cost – plus they need to pack the item so it’s accessible. Let them know of an item that may be difficult to move – or any concerns you have. You don’t want to find out on moving day that there are extra charges or unmovable items. 4. GET AN ESTIMATE

In many ways, estimating is a science. Computers help, but the results are only as good as the information they input. Telling them on moving day that you forgot you want to take the shed in the backyard can hold things up for hours. It will also add to your costs. And speaking of costs, the movers need to know well ahead of time if you want them to provide the service of packing.

Deciding this two days before the move likely won’t work. If you’ve been quoted only on moving and not on packing, you’ll need a new contract that reflects the cost of packing. If you do the packing yourself, read the contract as to whether or how much insurance your items are covered for, should damages occur. It is the mover’s responsibility as professionals to ask the right questions, but until they develop ESP, they need to rely on you to explain what you need from them. A contract protects you as much as the movers, but only if you read it, understand it and abide by it.
