I don’t much care for braggarts, so I was hesitant to write such a bold headline. After all, if I’m going to make such a definitive statement, I’d better back it up with some evidence, right? To be honest, I have not done an exhaustive search of what’s out there in terms of a comprehensive, onestop guide to finding great rentals and pertinent rental information. What I do know, is that Renters Guide is where you’ll truly find everything you’ll need, all in one place. Twice a month, this magazine hits the streets with its pages filled with rental opportunities from a wide range of properties throughout Winnipeg that meet a diversity of needs, lifestyles and budgets. Ten Things every renter should do You’re a renter and you appreciate the lifestyle. Ask any homeowner who has received an unexpected roof repair bill, or had to call a plumber, or had to move to accept a job offer, and you’ll appreciate it even more – especially the “all inclusive” renters. Rental living has a few demands that can easily be met by every resident, ensuring that their rental experience be maintenance-free and smooth sailing.

You’ve asked for your door to be unlocked, your toilet to be plunged, your sticky lock to be fixed. Your superintendent is the key to a smooth experience. You may never need them or you may run on a string of bad luck and need then plenty. Get to know your super. They’re part of the community. Don’t treat them

like an on-call service, treat them like neighbours. 8. balcony fUrnitUre

If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony, make sure you enjoy it. It’s not for bike storage and boxes, it’s for a couple of chairs, maybe even a little table. If you have a terrace, you may even want a bistro set and some gardening pots. Don’t overlook the enjoyment of having somewhere to sit and enjoy a coffee outside. It is what you make of it, and there are many ways to maximize. 9. storage

Rental living is known for its lack of storage. Older buildings seem to have more of it, while newer buildings tend to have smaller suite sizes and less storage space. There are plenty of ways to enhance whatever storage you have – proper shelving, multi-functional furniture with storage in it, organizers for drawers and cupboards. It’s best to survey your storage and maximize it when you first move in. Real storage solutions for small-space living does exist and will complement your lifestyle and increase your comfort. 10. taKe PictUres or maKe a Video

Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but if you do and tragedy strikes, a video of your home or a good set of pictures will make it easier to create that itemized list of possessions for the insurance company. Open your cupboards, your closets and your drawers. A bunch of quick pictures on your smartphone or a video walk-through of your suite will help you tally everything if anything ever goes wrong.

When you hire movers, you’re entrusting your possessions to someone so they can get them from your old apartment to your new one. Do you know what you’ll need? We do. Here are our tips for hiring movers. 1. A GOOD, DETAILED CONTRACT.

A contract ensures and outlines all expectations. This is particularly true when you hire professional movers. You’re obviously the “who,” and your gorgeous new apartment is obviously the “why,” but they also need to know exactly “what,” “where,” and “when” in order to transport your items to your new place. There are usually a lot of details, and finding out about them on moving day is counterproductive. Think ahead. 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH.

The first thing to do is find a reputable mover. Check online with the Better Business Bureau or the Canadian Association of Movers, and of course, ask friends and family members to refer companies they have used. Select a company that has a triedand-true track record. When they meet you to arrange your move, they need to know about everything you expect to take so they can prepare as accurate an estimate as possible. Ask them all of your questions before signing the contract: 24  Renters Guide  |  July 5–19, 2019

Insurance and liability, additional charges, any exemptions. 3. TELL THEM EVERYTHING.

If there’s an extra stop to drop something off, it’s extra time and will add to the cost – plus they need to pack the item so it’s accessible. Let them know of an item that may be difficult to move – or any concerns you have. You don’t want to find out on moving day that there are extra charges or unmovable items. 4. GET AN ESTIMATE.

In many ways, estimating is a science. Computers help, but the results are only as good as the information they input. Telling them on moving day that you forgot you want to take the shed in the backyard can hold things up for hours. It will also add to your costs. And speaking of costs, the movers need to know well ahead of time if you want them to provide the service of packing.

Deciding this two days before the move likely won’t work. If you’ve been quoted only on moving and not on packing, you’ll need a new contract that reflects the cost of packing. If you do the packing yourself, read the contract as to whether or how much insurance your items are covered for, should damages occur. It is the mover’s responsibility as professionals to ask the right questions, but until they develop ESP, they need to rely on you to explain what you need from them. A contract protects you as much as the movers, but only if you read it, understand it and abide by it.
