Late spring and summer are good times to move; there’s not much chance of snow and the long daylight hours mean more time to get your stuff from one place to the next. But according to Chuck Resnick, vicepresident of marketing and operations at Two Men and a Truck, June is the busiest month for moving. He’s the expert, so he should know, but if someone would have asked me, I would have said June was the top month, too.

That’s because it seems to be THE month the people in my family choose to move, including me. Five years ago June 4, I packed up a truck and moved from Quebec to Ontario. This June 1, my nephew and his wife, who is originally from Georgian Bay, Ontario, hit the road with their two young children and dog and crossed the Quebec border into Ontario to put down roots. On June 8, my daughter in Montreal moved, with her husband, into their newly purchased condo,and on June 15, my sister is closing the door for good on her Montreal duplex to meet the moving trucks in her new home in Ontario.

Whew! That’s a lot of moving. So, whether you’re moving this month, next month or next year, take it from me – and from Chuck Resnick – it’s a good idea to plan ahead. See Chuck’s article on page 10 for his top tips on being prepared and staying organized for a successful, trouble-free move.

elevator EtiquEttE? Jane Herman You need to take the elevator in your apartment building every day, and there are some huge pet peeves that come along for the ride. Here’s an elevator etiquette refresher.

1. Exit thEn EntEr. Let passengers off before boarding the elevator.

2. whEn to takE thE stairs.

One flight up or two flights down – use the stairs when

able. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it helps keep the flow on a busy elevator.

3. hold thE door! Your neighbours will remember you watching the doors close on them – and not in a good way. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator.

4. kids. If they’re old enough, let them push the button, but don’t let your children play with the panel or light up all the floors like a Christmas tree. That’s no way to impress the neighbours or make friends.

5. BE nEighBourly. Generally,

the people on the elevator are your neighbours. There’s no need for awkward silence – but there’s also no need for awkward questions. Don’t confuse friendliness with nosiness.

MOVING DAY OF THE YEAR CHUCK RESNICK Approximately 4.3 million Canadians move every year, and of that, 14 per cent opt to move in June.

“Of that 14 per cent, a whopping one-third will choose June 30 as their moving day,” says Chuck Resnick, vice-president of Marketing and Operations at Two Men and A Truck - Canada.

“That boils down to roughly 199,000 individuals and families who will be on the hunt for boxes, packing materials, and most likely, help with their move,” says Resnick.

“There are many reasons why June 30 is so popular,” he adds.

“It’s the end of the school year so it works well for parents who prefer not to disrupt their children’s schooling and to assure they get settled prior to beginning in their new school year come September. Many families also want to get settled into their new homes before the summer gets underway, to get the most out of their backyards and balconies.

The Canada Day holiday also gives people an extra day to unpack and wind down, while the weather is consistently pleasant.”

To make sure moving day goes smoothly, Resnick recommends planning in advance.

“Make arrangements for small children and pets to be looked after so they’re not under foot.

• Emptying closets can be a nightmare. Use wardrobe boxes to simplify the process. Clothes in drawers can be packed into suitcases.

• As tempting as it may be, don’t use cardboard boxes from the grocery store. You never know what little critter may be hiding in the corner of food boxes. In fact, avoid used boxes in general; you don’t know how much weight they can handle or how much weight they’ve already handled.
