Easy ways to warm up!
Jackie marchildon
When it’s cold outside, you may need these tips to stay warm inside.
Put down draft stoPPers
Draft stoppers act as barriers between the cold outside and the inside. They are cheap to buy and easy enough to make. Just stuff them and sew.
Cover your windows with insulation film
Insulation film is like plastic wrap for your windows, and it works wonders! Choose wisely which
windows to cover because you will not be able to open them once they are insulated.
Cover Cold surfaCes
Put a rug or two down on your cold floors. Put up thick or layered curtains to keep in the warmth.
reverse your Ceiling fans and buy a sPaCe heater
Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan’s blades to bring the warm air down. Invest in a good space heater — just check your lease to confirm you’re allowed to have a heater.
get Creative
Once you’ve done the above, throw on some slippers and get
creative. Sleep with a hot water bottle, microwave your socks and warm your towel on the radiator!

RENTING VERSUS OWNING
FIVE REASONS RENTING IS BETTER
Here are five good reasons why renting is preferable to owning.
1. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE.
Shovelling snow, raking autumn leaves, mowing the lawn –outdoor tasks are your landlord, superintendent or management company’s responsibility, unless your lease dictates otherwise.
2. FIXTURE REPAIR. If your shower stops running properly, it’s your landlord’s responsibility to call and pay for a plumber.
3. ACCESS TO AMENITIES.
Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, high-density housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping.
4. CHEAPER INSURANCE.
Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters’ insurance, expect to be paying approximately half of what you would if you owned your home.
5. LOWER UTILITY COSTS. Heating (or cooling) a larger space than that which you actually occupy is one of the downsides of home ownership. Rental units have more compact floorplans, and in the winter you may even benefit from ambient heat from the apartments around you.

MOVING ETIQUETTE
Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’.
• Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.
• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience.
• Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors.
• Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers.
• Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory, so it is totally up to you.
• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it.
• As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners.

TIPS ON HOW TO HELP SAVE FOR YOUR WINTER GETAWAY
With snow and frosty temperatures in the weather forecast, many Canadians are dreaming about a warm-weather winter escape. However, the rising cost of living and higher interest rates make it challenging to budget for vacations. Here are some tips to help you plan and save for your next adventure:
CREATE A TRAVEL FUND
Budgeting for a vacation can be difficult, but having a savings goal helps. Start by listing all your expenses and income to identify areas where you may be able to cut back and save. Try using a money management tool, such as TD’s MySpend, that can help you keep track of your spending. For example, if your anticipated trip will cost $4,000 and you have a year to save, the amount that you should consider setting aside is about $330 per month. Consider opening a dedicated savings account for your vacation
and use a pre-authorized transfer service to automate your savings. Continue saving even after booking to help cover last-minute changes or spontaneous activities.
SEARCH FOR DEALS AND BE FLEXIBLE
Being flexible with your travel dates and destinations can help save you money. The Christmas holiday and school spring break periods are the priciest times to book. Research the more affordable periods of the season for your desired destination. If your top choice is too expensive, consider other destinations that may better fit your budget. Think about all-inclusive packages that cover food, drinks and lodging. If travelling with family or friends, try to determine which costs can be shared with them.
LEVERAGE TRAVEL POINTS
If you are a travel credit card holder, you could redeem your
travel points you earned for flights, hotels and other travelrelated expenses, which could help reduce your vacation costs. Remember to be cautious of vacation scams and only book through trustworthy sites.
FACTOR IN ALL COSTS
Consider all potential costs, including activities, souvenirs and other expenses like service tips, visas and pet sitters if you need. If you’re planning an allinclusive vacation, remember to account for incidentals, such as excursions and souvenirs. Don’t forget travel and medical insurance, and seriously consider including trip cancellation coverage.
Planning a winter getaway can be costly and stressful but with careful budgeting and the right tools, your dream vacation can become a reality.

ADVICE | MONEY MATTERS
4 KEY WAYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SAVINGS
Saving money is a critical financial practice that nearly everyone strives to accomplish. Yet it is often easier in theory than reality. If you are anxious or concerned about your financial situation and your ability to save, know you’re not alone.
More than one-third of Canadians feel anxious about their current financial situation. Further, many households across the country do not feel in control of their finances, with 13 per cent reporting they’ve “forfeited contributions to their retirement accounts,” potentially impacting themselves later in life. These figures from the World Financial Group paint a concerning picture of how people across the country feel about their current and future finances.
Consider these savings tips.
CREATE A BUDGET
Every budget begins with your net income. Ensure you subtract deductions like taxes and workplace benefits, such as insurance or retirement plan contributions. This way, you know exactly how much money is available each month. Next, calculate all fixed expenses, including regular monthly payments or bills. These include utilities, cellphone bills, rent or mortgage, vehicle payments and anything that remains static month-to-month. Subtract those fixed expenses from your net income to create your monthly budget.
TRACK YOUR EXPENSES
Once your budget is in place, it’s much easier to keep track
of expenses that vary monthto-month like gas, groceries and entertainment costs such as dining out, seeing a movie or going to a sporting event. Tracking minor expenses may seem tedious initially, but logging each purchase can help set a foundation for financial accountability.
SET SAVINGS GOALS
Tracking your expenses for a few months should give you a good idea of how realistic it is to save a set amount of money each month. Before you set a goal, or if you’re struggling to consistently reach savings goals, take a financial literacy quiz to test your knowledge then consider meeting with a financial services professional.
PAY DOWN DEBTS
Debt is one of the largest barricades people face when trying to save more money. If you feel debts are stopping you from reaching your financial goals, know it is possible to pay off debt while saving at the same time. Make sure to prioritize debts with higher interest rates that lead to compounding costs in the future, and then, if possible, make more than the minimum payment to pay them off faster. It may limit you in the short-term but can equate to more financial freedom – and the ability to save more – in the future.
