enting an apartment over owning a home makes lots of financial sense for people in many different life situations. Maybe you just can’t afford to buy a home or don’t want to spend your hard-earned money on one. Maybe you have a plan to buy a home in a few years and want to start saving for a down payment. Or maybe you’re simply not interested in the cost and commitment that come with being a homeowner. No matter why you’re renting an apartment, you need to know your rights as a tenant. As part of the process, your landlord must give you a copy of the agreement after you sign and return it. Since this document outlines all the terms you’ve agreed to, it’s an important document to have on hand. You should avoid breaking a lease if at all possible. Each lease agreement has its own penalties for not honouring the outlined terms. Be sure to check your lease to make sure you can handle the financial ramifications that come with breaking a lease – before you break it.

ore than 4 million people moved residences in Canada last year, many of whom did the packing themselves. For some, it works out fine; others have problems resulting from a lack of foresight, poorly packed boxes and inexperience in loading moving trucks.

Here a re a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination: 1. Consider purchasing boxes from your mover. The most common packing mistake we see is people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings. 2. Be realistic about the number of boxes you need. Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement.Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80, two days before moving day. 3. Start packing early and be completely packed when the movers arrive. Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way. This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.

Next, we create a ‘box wall’ stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. We then stand plastic

wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure everything with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. Slice the chocolate pound cake into thick pieces and spread generously with cherry jam, rather like making big jam sandwiches, and layer in the bottom of a large, wide trifle bowl, squishing the cake down. Then pour over the cherry brandy so that the cake soaks it up — trifle should be boozy! Top with all of the drained cherries, being sure to push some against the side of the bowl, because that’s what you’ll see when the trifle is served. Cover with cling wrap and leave to macerate while you make the custard.

Melt 4 ounces of chocolate in a saucepan, over medium-low. Once the chocolate is melted, set aside while you get on with the custard. In a saucepan warm the milk and cream. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cocoa in a large bowl. Pour the warm milk and cream into the bowl whisking it into the yolks and sugar mixture. Stir in the melted chocolate, scraping the sides well with a rubber spatula to get all of it in, and pour the custard back into the rinsed saucepan.

I made this glorious ‘pud’ for a recent dinner party, and was given a thumping endorsement by all. Nigella suggests cheating and buying some chocolate cake and then tweaking it to make it your own. “I’m all for making life easier, and what makes my life easier when I have a crowd coming for supper, is to buy something and then make it even better. Once liquor and fruits are added, no one will tell the difference!” This is truly heaven in a bowl.

Cook over a medium heat until the custard thickens, stirring all the time. Make sure it doesn’t boil, as it will split and curdle. The custard will get darker as it cooks and the flecks of chocolate will melt once the custard has thickened. And you do need this thick, so don’t panic so much that you stop cooking while it is still runny.
