here’s nothing like your first apartment. It changes you, allows you to grow, and actually teaches you a lot about yourself. In my second year at university I opted to move out of the comforts of home and try life on my own. The commute was killing me and the freedom and independence seemed quite attractive. It was exciting to book viewings, talk to landlords and sign my first lease. I found a third-storey walk-up right in the heart of the city. That the building was painted purple may have played a small part in my decision, but ultimately, the ‘junior-one-bedroom’ fit me to a tee. I had an ensuite bathroom, a large eat-in kitchen and a completely enclosed bedroom. The large room doubled as my sitting room when I converted my futon frame into couch mode. And the deck was massive! The one thing I didn’t know when I took the apartment was that I would hate living alone. I thought that my cat and I would revel in the privacy. But in reality I found myself lonely. I hated that nobody would walk through the door unless I invited them. I hated that there was nobody to chat with over dinner and I really hated that there was nobody to help with bills! It’s interesting what you learn about yourself those first years on your own. In fact, as life changes your needs can change – and the amazing thing about renting is that it’s easy to change your home to suit your needs. If you live in a highrise building, the elevator is the principal way in and out of your apartment, a confined space in which you briefly encounter your neighbours several times daily. The natural instinct is to be uncommunicative and absorbed in your own headspace: preoccupied with where you’re headed, and keeping strangers at a distance. And yet, the other occupants of the elevator, unfamiliar as they may be, deserve a TheRentersGuide.ca modicum of courtesy.

Unfortunately, most people have forgotten how to be courteous. Most elevator etiquette is just that – being courteous. If you need some specifics, the following should help:

Allow passengers to exit before attempting to board the elevator.

Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator – especially your neighbours coming from down the hall. A plague on anyone who watches the door slide shut in someone’s face!

Take the stairs if you are only going one or two floors, except if the elevator is empty or you have a cart, stroller, large packages or are disabled.
While holding the doors briefly is a must, do not hold the door indefinitely and delay travel for other passengers. Please be considerate of others. If you are sick, wait for an empty elevator. If that is truly impossible, absolutely refrain from coughing/ sneezing, etc., for the duration of the ride. Always sneeze or cough into your sleeve, not your hands, and never put your germ-infested hands on the floor buttons.

If you are on the elevator first or closest to the control panel, ask other riders what floor they would like. On the other hand, it is somewhat rude to call out your floor to the person standing nearest the buttons as if that person is the TheRentersGuide.ca elevator operator. If there is space to do so, press the button yourself.

There’s a certain amount of discomfort when several strangers enter the elevator together. Typically, women like to feel safe and give a quick glance around to “size up” who is in the elevator. Don’t be afraid to say “good morning” or “hello” and make eye contact with other passengers.

When other passengers board, move a little to give everyone some personal space.

Likewise, if you’re listening to your iPod, turn the volume down so you don’t disturb other riders.
Try to avoid carrying out interpersonal conversations, be they face-to-face or – particularly – talking on your cellphone (especially in a loud voice). The elevator is not a phone booth.
If you’re carrying a backpack, make sure it doesn’t land in someone’s face when you turn around. Never drop litter or deface the walls of the elevator with anything sharp. Vandalism hurts everyone.
Riding in an elevator can bring out the best or the worst in people. Think of the elevator as an extension of the building’s lobby, and of other riders as your guests. Now, enjoy the ride!

It feels bad knowing that you know you have things in your house that are unused, used to fit and were expensive so you should keep them or were gifts. Get rid of the guilt and then get rid of them by donating, recycling or tossing. 3 MAKE A GRACEFUL ENTRANCE Nothing is worse than running late and trying to find your keys, phone or purse. Create an area near the entryway that you always use for command central. This should be aesthetic as well as a utilitarian place to charge your phone, hang your keys or put them in a tray, put your sunglasses and keep your purse. 4 ROUTINES ARE NOT BORING Stay organized by creating schedules and routines. The garbage truck comes on Wednesday so make Tuesday the day you put out all the recyclables. Go through the pantry and fridge to get rid of all expired leftovers, food that went bad and cereal boxes that have 10 flakes left in the bag. Group errands together. Do your dry cleaning the same day you get your nails done or go to the post office if they are in the same vicinity. That way you don’t waste time in your car. 5 THERE IS NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT Clean as you go and put it away now. If you are finished using something, don’t just put it down somewhere nearby, “planning” to put it away later. Cluttered homes are full of these intentions. Instead of letting things pile up, put them away immediately. Do not let your couch become the “laundry couch.” 6 GO WITH WHITE Buy housewares in plain, pure white. No patterns or decorations. This means all paper goods like toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, napkins and dishtowels. I even use only white for bath and hand towels and bed linen. It is a clean look and doesn’t distract the eye. 7 BE MEDIA FRIENDLY Get rid of all the audio cassettes and VHS tapes you have been holding onto. Be honest – you don’t even own players for them anymore. Also get rid of all the DVD and CD towers – they make you look like you are in your college dorm. Get media books and put your extensive music collection in the sleeves and recycle all the jewel boxes. No more losing the jewel case, scratching the DVD and having piles and piles gathering dust on top of your stereo and TV. If you want to travel with CDs, get a small case and keep them in these and replace when you are done. Keep all the remotes in a basket or tray on top of the media centre or on the coffee table. 8 BATHROOMS DESERVE LOVE, TOO What should not be there: a library of reading, newspapers more than two days old, a candle collection, shoes, food (you are laughing but I see more clients using their bathroom as a getaway to do all kinds of things). Bathrooms are for cleaning, bathing and grooming, not for picnics. What should be there? Beauty products and towels. Get rid of the shampoo graveyard. All those almost empty bottles of shampoo and conditioner – use up in one week or toss. Get rid of expired cosmetics. Use votive holders TheRentersGuide.ca for bobby pins or hair elastics, plastic drawer dividers for the medicine cabinet, silverware dividers for the drawers. Also separate make-up, brushes and other items.

CLUTTERED HOMES ARE FULL OF THESE INTENTIONS. 9 MAKE YOUR HOME OFFICE WORK FOR YOU Don’t let your dining room or kitchen table double as a desk. Create a space in a room, in a closet, in an area that you can try to keep separate. This is presumably where you are taking care of important issues like your bills, finances and filing important documents. Create an inbox that isn’t too deep and deal with it weekly. Pay it, answer it, file it or toss it. Categorize your mail everyday; “bills,”“catalogues,” “personal correspondence” and “invitations.” It takes less than a minute and saves you from being crushed by the mail monster later. Don’t be overwhelmed by catalogues and junk mail. Get rid of your junk mail and stop killing trees at reddotcampagin.ca 10 MAKE YOUR BED! There is nothing nicer than getting into a made bed at the end of the day. This is also a neat trick so that you can’t keep piles of clothes on your bed. Put those clothes away if they are clean or in the laundry basket if they are dirty. Very basic but it works!

Many landlords encourage residents to garden on their balconies and even have competitions with prizes. All you need is about three or four hours of sunshine, say the experts. If you’re planning to entertain on your balcony, say cocktails and watching fireworks on the long weekend, just reduce the noise level after 11pm. If you’re watching from the roof garden, don’t bring glass upstairs. If your balcony doesn’t hold all your friends, reserve a patio table at your local pub or bistro. This way, you won’t have to worry about running out of refreshments. Installing a window air conditioner is fine too. Check with your building representative. Units that are installed from a bedroom window (without balcony) may require a specific contractor to ensure the safety of those below. If your hydro is included in your rent, your landlord may charge an additional fee for the seasonal hydro useage. Depending on your exposure, you can keep the temperature down in your apartment by closing the blinds or drapes, avoiding the use of your stove (try a toaster oven) keeping the lights off and try a ceiling fan.

Moving is never easy or effortless, but there are ways to siMplify. I recommend the following 15-point checklist to help you complete your move in a stress free way:

Double-check all closets, drawers and shelves, in addition to the attic and garage to ensure they are empty.

Carry important documents, money and jewelry with you.

Remember to pack a box of basics that you may need on move-in day (tools, paper products, all-purpose household cleaners, etc.). Be sure to have it loaded last so that it will be first off at your new home.
Pack toys, games or special items for the kids to keep them busy during the move.

Don’t pack paint, bottles of bleach, gas cans or other inflammables. It is against federal law for movers to transport flammable and combustible materials.

Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobes and other special items.

Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws. Before removing cables, take pictures of the back of the unit so you can hook everything back up the same way. If removing screws, tape them to the objects they are removed from.

Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box.

Have rugs and draperies cleaned before moving and leave them in wrappings for the move.

Pack medicines in a plastic re-sealable zipper storage bag or leak-proof container.

Check the weather forecast for your move day. If it’s going to be hot, be sure to have a cooler with lots of bottled water and sports drinks on ice.

Call your moving company the day before your move to get a contact number for the crew in case you need to contact them en route. Give your mover your cell phone number and be sure to fully charge your cell phone the night before your moving day.
Label each box and indicate: which room it should go in; whether it is fragile; and if it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first.

7 steps to
de-cluttering for a move by Hellen Buttigieg Moving is rigHt at tHe top of tHe list of most
people’s stressful situations. But a little organization goes a long way in alleviating the stress and making the move go smoothly. I’m happy to share some simple steps that will help you de-clutter your current home so you can enjoy your new home with a clean slate: 1. Start now: Our tendency is to put it off until packing time, but most people are in a time crunch at that point, and will often put things in a box to deal with ‘later’. Remember that you are paying for each item you move, not only in the time it takes to pack and unpack it, but also by the space it takes up in the moving truck. Why pay to move something you don’t really need? You’ll be busy when you move into your new home, and will probably put off going through those ‘deal with them later’ boxes indefinitely; believe me, when I work with clients, I come across unpacked boxes that have been sitting in the basement or garage for several years after a move. 2. Pictures: Take pictures of all the large items you know will not work or fit in your next home and post them on one of the resale sites online, like Kijiji, Craigslist or Ebay. You can put the extra money you earn towards your moving expenses and perhaps some pieces that fit the new place much better than your old stuff. And the nice thing about photographing them in the first place is that, if you have any sentimental attachment to the items you are selling, you can always use the pictures to trigger the memories. 3. The no-brainers: Go through your house one room at a time and get rid of the no-brainers first. No-brainers are items you don’t have to think twice about letting go of, like torn towels, chipped plates and broken electronics (if you haven’t fixed them by now, trust me, you probably never will). Do this every day, even if it’s just for just 15 minutes, until the task is complete. This is a great way to warm up your de-cluttering muscles and will give you an immediate sense of accomplishment and motivate you to tackle the tougher stuff.
Could a local women’s shelter make better use of the clothes you never wear? Find the closest drop-off location where your unused electronics can be reused or recycled safely (do an online search – there are hundreds of locations). 5. Fight the ‘what if I need it someday’ fear: If you haven’t used it in a year, chances are you never will. For example, we wear only 20 per cent of our clothes 80 per cent of the time. If in doubt, toss it out (or donate/sell it). On the offchance you do need it months from now, you can always replace it, but chances are you’ll never look back. If you keep everything because of this fear, it will probably cost you much more in time, money and stress than it would to replace it. 6. Be prepared: Set up your supplies in advance. For the de-cluttering process, you will need bins, sticky notes (for labeling) and garbage bags. Use bins to do the initial sort; label them ‘donate’, ‘sell’, ‘recycle,’ ‘toss’ and ‘keep’. When the bins get full, transfer the contents into bags. Use clear bags for items that will be donated and opaque bags for garbage, so there’s no confusion. Arrange for a charity to come and pick up the donations or drop them off yourself before the end of the week (you can always go back again as you accumulate more items to donate). Give yourself a deadline on the ‘sell’ items and have a plan for the items that don’t sell (i.e. donate). Transfer the ‘keep’ items directly into the moving boxes. 7. Get the whole family involved: Everyone should make decisions on their own things, when it comes to determining what to keep and what to let go of. But a little competition never hurt, so make a game of the de-cluttering process. Set a timer, give everyone a bin, and put some up-beat music on to make it fun. Choose a token prize for the winner who got rid of the most items and a reward for the entire family for the effort each member put in.

4. Research: Do some research ahead of time and decide where you will take your discarded items. Although some things will be garbage, most items can be donated or recycled.
