Message from the President Welcome to fall semester at Wallace State! At Wallace State our goal is to help students Start Early, Start Right, Finish and Succeed! Every faculty and staff member here is committed to student success. That begins when you first set foot on campus or enroll online. You will be assigned an advisor and a success coach to help ensure that you are on the right path and that you receive all the encouragement and guidance you need to navigate college. This fall semester, students will find new programs, such as the recently launched Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Global Studies, Building Construction, Cardiovascular Sonography, Medical Laboratory Assistant, and Small Farmer Training programs, and an exciting new ADN to BSN partnership in nursing. New earn-and-learn programs, such as the FAME program for industrial maintenance students, a partnership with Toyota and other industries, a Mercedes Co-op program with our automotive service program, and a Kubota training partnership in our diesel mechanics program, allow Wallace State students to earn money and experience while completing credentials. Our new Oneonta flagship facility opened this summer. Class offerings in liberal arts, STEM, healthcare and applied technologies fields, including new EMS and Precision Machining programs are expanding there. New activities organized by our Student Engagement office abound on campus each semester. A Lions’ Kitchen is addressing food insecurity. Our Student Resource Center includes a free Tutoring Lab, with study space and a computer lab accessible to all students, and our Career Services office provides assistance to students searching for apprenticeships, internships, and job opportunities. In addition to being recognized among the fastest growing community colleges in the nation and the first-choice community college for Alabama high school seniors taking the ACT, Wallace State is an Achieving the Dream Leader College and a three-time nominee for the Aspen Prize, accolades which recognize our outstanding results in student success and completion. Wallace State is also National League of Nursing Center of Excellence, an All-Steinway School, and a Military Friendly institution, with resources dedicated to honoring and serving our veterans on campus. Please take full advantage of all Wallace State has to offer – service clubs and student organizations, athletic events, plays and music performances, an art museum, wellness center… The more you participate in the college experience, the more you will get out of it. Financial Aid
256.352.8182
Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully:
Dropping a course prior to Aug. 27, 2019, will result in a recalculation of a student’s federal financial aid which includes Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and SEOG Funds. This recalculation could affect the amount of the financial aid award and may result in a balance owed to the college. Dropping all classes prior to Aug. 27, 2019, will result in a recalculation of federal financial aid which includes Pell Grants, Direct Loans, and SEOG Funds. This recalculation will be based on the number of days the student attended the class prior to dropping all classes. A student will likely owe a portion of financial aid back to Wallace State and/or the US Department of Education if all classes are dropped or if the student quits attending classes prior to Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019. APPLY EARLY – Students applying for financial aid should apply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Applying early will help ensure a timely response to federal guidelines and will allow for any unforeseen problems/situations that might occur. Applying early will also help the student avoid potential long lines or waits. BOOKSTORE CHARGES If Pell Awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges Tuesday, Aug. 6. DISTANCE EDUCATION students are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all Blackboard, Internet, and video classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified. BALANCE CHECKS Per federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be mailed. Students who have not been electronically verified as attending their classes by their instructors will not be able to see their Financial Aid funds on their MyWallaceState account for that class that has not been confirmed as attending. As more classes are verified, more funds will be added to the student account balance that can be seen on MyWallaceState student account. PLEASE NOTE: Students in DISTANCE EDUCATION courses are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online and video classes. Pell and loan funds will not be mailed until attendance is verified. Pell Grant and Loan balance checks, with no holds, will begin mailing, Friday, Aug. 30. If you are registered in classes that begin later than Aug. 23, your balance check will be mailed at a later date. You must attend classes prior to any funds being mailed for a particular class. Withdrawal from all classes after receiving balance checks will result in Pell overpayment and future Pell payments for WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid.
ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION Removal of classes for no AV can affect eligibility for Financial Aid and the award amount. Students utilizing federal financial aid, state financial aid, WSCC Scholarships, and Veteran’s Benefits who do not show attendance for one or more classes will have registration removed for the classes lacking attendance verification. Students will need instructor permission to re-enroll in classes that were removed for no attendance verification. AV for Regular Term is due Monday, Aug. 26. Students can check their attendance verification on their MyWallaceState account under the Student tab. INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP recipients must complete a 2019-2020 FAFSA prior to enrollment being completed. Scholarships cannot be added to the student account until the FAFSA is received. Students receiving an Institutional Scholarship are required to have attendance verified in each class. REMEMBER Students must re-file for Pell Grants for every academic year (fall – summer). The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Students applying for 2019-2020 (fall 2019, spring 2020, summer 2020) Pell Grants must complete the forms with 2017 tax data. It is the student’s responsibility to provide any additional information requested by the Financial Aid Office. The Grant cannot be awarded until the student’s file is complete. ** Priority Deadline for fall 2019 Financial Aid is June 3, 2019. Completed Financial Aid paperwork must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office and Admission requirements (ID, residency, transcripts, etc.) by the deadline of June 3 in order for funds to be available for fall semester 2019. Living on campus has many advantages. Wallace State’s residence halls provide an environment conducive to academic achievement and are conveniently located within walking distance to classrooms, the library, and other campus facilities. Residents often find that living in a dorm is a great way to become involved in student activities and make new friends. Wallace State offers both men’s and women’s dormitories. The rooms are large and designed for double-occupancy, but a limited number of single rooms are available. Most rooms have two double beds, two study areas with storage units, a large walk-in closet and a private bath. Multiple laundry facilities are located in each residence hall with coin-operated washers and dryers. Telephone and cable outlets are provided in each room. The residence halls also provide community kitchen facilities. In addition, residents are allowed to have refrigerators and microwave ovens in their rooms. The WSCC Café, located in the School of Nursing and Center for Science, is open Monday-Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and provides meals offered through the meal plan. A variety of restaurants are located adjacent to campus.

Fall Semester 2019 Schedule of Classes
Page 47
Glossary of Terms A
A Number: The A Number is the Student Number assigned to each student who applies to Wallace State Community College (as of July 1, 2019). See Student Number. ACCUPLACER: ACCUPLACER is the assessment test for students to determine placement in math and English classes. Students with ACT scores of 20 or above or SAT scores of 470 or above in math and English in the last three years are not required to take the placement exam, as well as students who have taken the ASSET or COMPASS test within the last three years. Adjunct: An adjunct is a part-time instructor, usually teaching evening courses. Attendance Verification (AV): Attendance Verification is required of students for each class they take each semester to maintain their schedule. It is also required of students receiving financial aid in order for the distribution of balance checks. Students can track their Attendance Verification through their myWallaceState account under the Student tab.
B
Blackboard: Blackboard is the application through which students and instructors communicate. Instructors make assignments and students submit assignments through Blackboard. It also provides announcements to students, faculty and staff; a calendar, address book, and other tools for students to use to stay on track.
C
Convocation: Is the meeting of Wallace State faculty and staff prior to the start of a semester. Co-requisite: Usually associated with English or mathematics courses that allow students to enroll in two courses during the same semester, one a developmental course and the other the next-level course in that subject. CRN: Stands for course reference number. Each class is given a unique CRN used during the registration process.
D
Days: The schedule uses abbreviations to indicate the days of the week classes are offered. • M = Monday • T = Tuesday • W = Wednesday • R = Thursday • F = Friday • S = Saturday DegreeWorks: The online source through myWallaceState that helps students track Page 48
their progress and provide guidance for courses to take that fit within their degree plan. Disbursement: Disbursement is the delivery of funds remaining in student financial aid accounts after tuition and fees, books, etc., have been removed. The money is delivered by check and usually sent out two weeks after classes begin and attendance is verified. Dual Enrollment: Dual enrollment allows high school students in grades 11-12 to earn high school and college credit at the same time, advancing their college degree by up to two years.
F
Faculty Duty Day: Days set aside for Faculty to complete professional development or tasks associated with their programs. No classes are held on these days. Fast Track: Fast Track is a joint partnership between Wallace State and local school systems which allow high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to complete up to two years of college coursework before high school graduation. All coursework is taken on Wallace Sate’s campus, but students are still able to return to their local high school to participate in extracurricular activities. FAFSA: FAFSA is the acronym for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which all Wallace State students seeking any type of financial assistance or scholarships must complete. Students should complete the FAFSA at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Flex Term: Flex Terms, formerly mini terms, are offered each semester, condensing a regular term course into a shorter time period, often half of the semester. Dates for each term are listed in the schedule. A number of courses in a variety of subjects are offered during each Flex Term. Flipped Class: A Flipped Class lets students do homework in class, and everything else online.
G
GPA: GPA is your Grade Point Average and is determined by averaging the grades received, and is computed by multiplying the quality points earned by the credit value of each course and dividing the total quality points earned by the total credit hours attempted. A student’s GPA is calculated for each semester and cumulatively for the student’s college career.
H
Hybrid Class: Hybrid classes are those that are taught mainly online, with occasional Fall Semester 2019 Schedule of Classes
on-campus visits for tests or labs, with the number of visits at the instructor’s discretion.
L
Location: Campus Locations of classes are listed under Campus in the online registration link. Understanding the abbreviations will be helpful. • Main refers to the Hanceville campus • ONE refers to the Oneonta Center • APT refers to the Cullman Airport • JPB refers to J.B. Pennington High School • TBA is for To Be Announced, used if location has not been determined when the schedule is printed.
M
myWallaceState: myWallaceState is the portal students use to apply for admission, register, keep track of their schedule, grades and transcripts, pay tuition, view the course schedules, the college catalog and more.
N
Navigate Wallace State: Online tool customized to help students plan ahead and manage their college experience, including reminders of important dates to remember.
O
Online Class: An online class is one in which all lectures, assignments, and exams are conducted by computer. Students can watch lectures through Tegrity, and assignments and exams are usually delivered through Blackboard. Most online courses require Respondus testing. Online math classes also have a final exam requirement which is scheduled on campus. Students with special circumstances may be approved for a proctored exam at an alternate location. In such situations, the student is responsible for securing an approved proctor with approval from the instructor at a certified testing center, college, or university at least two weeks prior to the scheduled exam date. Online classes are designated in the course schedules under a separate online heading for each subject.
P
Pathways: Pathways includes four meta-majors — Applied Technologies, Health Science, Liberal Arts/General Studies, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Students can choose one of the four meta-majors that best meet their general interest, before choosing a major within one of those meta-majors. Payment Plan: A payment plan offered to Wallace State students, allowing them to break up their tuition into two, three or four payments, depending on when they enroll in www.wallacestate.edu
the plan. The earliest deadline each semester requires no down payment, and an enrollment fee of $30, and splits tuition into four payments. The next deadline requires a 25% down payment, an enrollment fee of $35, and breaks tuition into three payments. The final deadline requires a 50% down payment, a $40 enrollment fee, and breaks the tuition into two payments. Pell Grant: Pell Grant is a form of federal financial aid that does not require repayment as long as the student remains enrolled each semester; awarded based on need. PLA: PLA or Prior Learning Assessment measures the value of professional/career experience that can be applied as college credit. Priority Registration: A schedule for registering in which students are given priority for early registration based on the accumulated credit hours completed at Wallace State Professional Development Day: Days set aside for faculty and staff to earn Professional Development points. No classes are held these days. Pre-requisite: A pre-requisite is a course, assessment test score or ACT score required to enter or advance in a course.
R
Return to Title IV: The required return of “overpayment” of financial aid funds when a student receiving financial aid withdraws from classes before 60% of the semester is completed, and fail to pass a minimum of one credit hour. Future federal financial aid awards from Wallace State Community College or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid by the student.
S
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): SAP is measured each term to determine if students are meeting the requirements to receive Federal Student Aid. Students can track their SAP on their myWallaceState account, under the Financial Aid tab-Financial Status-SAP Status. See the college catalog (Page 39) for detailed information. Student Number: A student number is assigned to each student who applies to Wallace State. As of Fall 2019, that number begins with an A. The number is used to log in to myWallaceState to register for classes, pay tuition, check Financial Aid, etc.
T
Tegrity: An online resource for students to watch lectures recorded by instructors; for use in hybrid and online courses or as reference in traditional courses if used by those instructors. Transcripts: Transcripts are records of a student’s education history and are required as part of the application process to enroll at Wallace State Community College. Students can view their most recent Wallace State transcripts in the Student Records tab of myWallaceState.
W
W Number: The W Number was the first letter of the Student Number assigned to each student prior to July 1, 2019. Wallace ID: A Wallace ID is the email address students are assigned when they first register for classes. The ID is used for their Wallace State email account and to log in to Blackboard and Tegrity. Web Assisted: Classes with computer lab time on campus with an instructor on hand to assist.
TBA: To be announced.
Wallace ID vs. Student Number What is difference between my Wallace ID and my Student Number?
you will use in your classes to submit assignments, check grades, communicate with your teachers and classmates, etc., and Tegrity, to watch videos instructors provide of lectures, etc.
Your Wallace ID and your Student Number are two different identifiers you will use during your time here at Wallace State. Your Wallace ID is used for your email, Blackboard and Tegrity. Your Student Number, or A#, is used for myWallacState.
To check your Wallace State email follow this link http://www. wallacestate.edu/mywallaceid, and click on Student Email Login. First-time users will use their Student Number to access their Wallace ID and set their password and security questions. After your Wallace ID is set up, you will be redirected to Outlook. Log in using your full Wallace ID (username@student.wallacestate.edu) and the password you created.
Student Number Your Student Number (A#) is the number you are assigned when you first fill out the application to attend Wallace State. You will use your student number when you log in to your myWallaceState account to register for classes, pay tuition, check Financial Aid, etc. Wallace ID Your Wallace ID is the Wallace State student email address you are assigned when you register for classes for the first time. This ID is used to access your Wallace State email account and Blackboard, which
