MEET THE COACH Head Coach Kevin Yates
kevin.yates@wallacestate.edu, 256.352.8218 Kevin Yates is the Wallace State cheerleading coach for the 2024-2025 season. Yates, a Wallace State alumnus and Oneonta native, The owner of Showtime All-Star Tumble and Cheer in Cleveland. Yates cheered for Wallace State from 2000-2002 before transferring to Morehead State University, where he was a part of two national championships at the UCA College Nationals. Yates earned a degree at Wallace State in business administration and a bachelor’s from Morehead State in University Studies with an emphasis on Business Communications.

MEET THE WOMEN’S COACHING STAFF Head Coach Joseph Simmons
joseph.simmons@wallacestate.edu, 256.352.8481 Joseph Simmons enters his first season as head coach of the WSCC women’s basketball program. Simmons previously served as assistant coach to the men’s basketball team from 2006-2010 under former coach Allen Sharpe, who is now the women’s basketball coach at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Before his first stint coaching at Wallace State, Simmons was the head varsity boy’s basketball coach at East Poinsett County Schools in Lepanto, Arkansas from 2004 to 2006. After leaving Wallace State in 2010, he served as the head varsity girl’s basketball coach at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky (2010-2017) and head varsity girl’s basketball coach at Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, Tennessee (2017-2022). He returns to Wallace State after most recently serving as head varsity girl’s basketball coach at Green Hill High School in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee (2022-2024). Simmons takes over a team that finished the 2023-2024 season 25-6 and as runner-up in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) South District/Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) championship. The Lady Lions own six ACCC championships and have made six appearances at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I National Tournament. Simmons’ career coaching record is 483-171 between 16 years coaching high school (363-156) and four years as assistant at Wallace State (120-15). Simmons holds master’s degrees from the University of the Cumberlands and United States Sports Academy, a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas State University and an associate’s degree from Crowley’s Ridge College. He played collegiately at Crowley’s Ridge College (Arkansas) from 1998-2000, and Vennard College (Iowa) from 2001-2002. Simmons and his wife, Adrienne, are the parents of two daughters – Kennedy and Kylie.
Assistant Coach Toni West
toni.west@wallacestate.edu, 256.352.7425 This season marks Toni West’s second at Wallace State as assistant coach of the women’s basketball program. In her first season, she helped guide the Lady Lions to a record of 25-6 and an ACCC tournament runner-up title. West graduated from Cold Springs High School in 2021, where she was a member of the 2018-19 State Championship team. She continued her basketball career at Shelton State Community College from 2021 to 2023. During her time at Shelton State, she finished with a record of 60-6 and was a 2x ACCC regular season and tournament champion. She earned an associate degree at Shelton State in May 2023. She is currently perusing a bachelor’s degree from Athens State University. West is the daughter of Patrick and Tammy West. Tammy has been the coach at Cold Springs High School for 33 years and has won 4 State Championships. Toni also has two older sisters, Hayden and Bailey who are both high school coaches. West also serves as a Wallace State recruiter.

MEET THE MEN’S COACHING STAFF Head Coach Faron Key

Faron Key is in his first year as the head men’s basketball coach at Wallace State Community College. A 1995 graduate of West Point High School, he was a twotime All-State player and remains the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,641 points. Key played collegiately at Wallace State before continuing his career at Faulkner University. With 18 years of coaching experience, Key spent eight successful years at Arab High School, where he achieved 125 wins, ranking second in all-time wins at the school. He then dedicated a decade to Hartselle High School, amassing 174 wins and becoming the winningest coach in the program’s history. Key is married to Tamisha Jones Key, and they have four children: Kayla, Karmyn, Kiah, and Kohl. His deep commitment to both coaching and family reflects his passion for the game and his dedication to nurturing young talent.
Assistant Coach Drew Wilson
drew.wilson@wallacestate.edu, 256.352.8365 Drew Wilson joins Wallace State after serving as the Director of Basketball Operations at Arkansas State University since 2021. At Arkansas State, he was instrumental in managing daily scheduling, travel arrangements, budget oversight, media relations, and NCAA compliance logs. Under his leadership, the team achieved its most wins and first winning conference record in five years, and garnered individual accolades including Sun Belt Player of the Year and Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. Prior to Arkansas State, Wilson was an Assistant Coach at Faulkner University from 2014 to 2021. During his tenure, Faulkner University secured four Southern States Athletic Conference Championships and made three NAIA National Tournament appearances. Wilson’s expertise in recruiting and player development led to the recognition of numerous players as NAIA All-Americans and All-Conference selections. Wilson also held the role of Associate Head Coach/Assistant Coach at Snead State Community College from 2012 to 2014, where his efforts resulted in several players advancing to NCAA Division I programs and other four-year institutions.
