WALLASEY SCHOOL NEWS Summer Issue 2014
Letter to an Unknown Soldier
Message from the Headteacher As Headteacher I would like to thank you for all your support this academic year. All of our pupils have worked extremely hard and I am very proud of everything that they have achieved. I would also like to thank all of my staff for their on-‐ going commitment and dedication during, what at times, has been a challenging year.
We have a very busy and exciting year ahead and I look forward to being the Principal of The Kingsway Academy. I am particularly p roud that the new Academy is a member of the Northern Schools Trust. I am in n o doubt as to the exciting opportunities that the Trust will bring to our young people, which will ensure that not only will they receive an outstanding academic provision, but that they will be fully prepared for the world into which they will enter when they move into further education and employment.
May I also remind parents that I hold regular ‘Open Parent Forum Meetings’. These will continue next year and will provide an opportunity to discuss any issues of concern with me. The dates for the next academic year will be circulated in September.
May I take this opportunity to wish you a very enjoyable summer and may I thank you once again for your support.
OPEN EVENING
16 September 2014, 6pm-‐8pm
Pupils recently appeared on BBC News following their involvement in the ‘Letter to an Unknown Soldier Project’. Over 350 letters were written across the school and delivered to the feet of the unknown warrior, who stands on Paddington Station, by a select number of pupils. Inspiration for the content of the letters came from the many former p upils and staff of the school that dSummer ied in the TGerm reat 2014 War and whose names are d isplayed on a plaque in the school hall as well as a letter written to the school almost 100 years ago from the trenches. Pupils and staff will continue to commemorate the Centenary of WW1 throughout the year, which will culminate in a Remembrance Service in November.

Honoured Youth Heroes
Congratulations to Ellis Muirhead and Charlie Johnson who were recently honored in front of 700 guests at the nationally acclaimed Wirral Youth Heroes Awards. Charlie was short-‐listed for Academic Achievement in Business and Ellis in the ‘Response to Illness and Disability’ category.
A Royal Date with the Golden Touch Pupils from Wallasey School were invited to the prestigious setting of St. James’s Palace, London to receive their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award. They were presented with their Awards by comedian Bill Bailey and met His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh. Head Teacher Amanda Cawood commented: “To see the progression of each young person as they undertook their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards has been a pleasure to watch. The sense of achievement in the school reflects the hard work and dedication our young people have shown towards The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. “Fulfilling the award develops our young people into capable, active and well rounded young adults and they should be proud of their achievements. We certainly are.”
Both pupils were amongst 24 young people and three adults that were recognised, across 10 categories, for their inspirational achievements at the prestigious ceremony at the Floral Pavilion, New Brighton. We would like to pass on our congratulations to both Ellis and Charlie and we hope that they had a very enjoyable, memorable evening with their friends and family.
Leasowe Clean-‐Up Pupils along with local Councillor Anita Leech and pupils from neighbouring Primary Schools; Holy Spirit Primary, Leasowe Primary and Castleway Primary, completed a big litter pick-‐up around Leasowe. The pupils focussed on cleaning up areas close to school that particularly suffer from litter. Pupils also engaged with local residents, offering to clear their gardens of litter. Teacher, Matthew Bebb, Wallasey School’s Lead Practitioner for Culture and Ethos said: “The Leasowe Clean-‐Up was a very successful event. Seeing our pupils engaging with residents, working with their primary school peers and taking pride in their surroundings and responsibility for tidying up their community was very p owerful.”
