CEO MESSAGE

W

e have now relocated our office in Hong Kong and this was achieved with very little disruption to our daily work because of excellent planning and execution by our staff. The new and modern office offers more meeting rooms, a variety of new space types such as collaboration sofa areas, touchdown areas, cafés and a wellness room, which facilitate our enhanced team spirit, idea sharing and well-being to improve the working environment and to ultimately better serve our clients. While we are celebrating moving into our new Head Quarters, it is the 10th anniversary of our Company being brought back into the Wallem family and being owned by our current shareholders. The make-up of our Board of Directors, each of whom have a strong background in shipping, is very much one of the reasons for Wallem’s emphasis on sustainable organic growth, something our board members touch upon in their interview on pages 19-20.

The continuing theme of this issue is safety. This is something we hold dear to our hearts at Wallem as our business is centred on keeping our seafarers and our employees safe. Ensuring that our sea staff return home safely to their families is a main priority and we do everything within our power to ensure that there is a safe, healthy, respectful and positive atmosphere onboard Wallem-managed ships. While we'll do everything we can ashore to keep our seafarers safe, ultimately it is their responsibility to take their and their shipmates' safety into their own hands. One such initiative aimed at encouraging a proactive approach to safety is the 'Stop Card'. Our Marine Director Fared Khan explains about this and more in this issue's Lead Story, "Safety at all Costs' on pages 3-8. An important aspect of safety is wellness – both wellness in ensuring that our seafarers stay healthy and mentally alert and wellness in the sense of ensuring that there is a healthy, respectful, supportive environment onboard for everyone. Turn to pages 25-26 to hear how one Wallem seafarer has been impressed by the support onboard and find out how Women of Wallem (WoW) support our seafarers and their families on page 27. We are a strong organisation made up of great people who make us proud every day. In the true spirit of seafaring, we are pleased to share news of two rescues at sea that Wallem crew were involved in over the past few months. We thank our staff and seafarers for their continued commitment and hard work. Stay safe!

LEAD STORY

Safety at All Costs The goal is zero

An Interview with Marine Director of Wallem Ship Management, Captain Fared Khan.

S

afety makes good business sense, that much is true. However, Wallem’s Marine Director Captain Fared Khan believes passionately that safety and operational excellence go hand in hand. What’s more, that a strong safety culture ensures that seafarers are happy, engaged, motivated and committed – and with people at the core of our business, this is our main concern. We asked Captain Khan about what attracts seafarers to Wallem, our training philosophy and the measures we take to keep our seafarers safe at sea.

Quality Service Delivery

Wallem Culture & Safety

One of Wallem’s strengths is the diversity of maritime professionals both in the Wallem fleet and ashore.

Besides being one of the most recognised names in the industry thanks to our long history and strong brand, Captain Khan believes that it is our commitment to our seafarers and our strong safety culture (in addition to secure living conditions, a safe work environment and a competitive salary), which attracts seafarers to Wallem. A strong safety culture is something that Fared Khan himself is very passionate about – and he believes that respect and support is an integral part of this.

The Wallem crew is made up of a great mix of people from different cultural backgrounds. Our crew is made up of mostly Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Ukranian seafarers plus some from several other countries. Crew nationality is determined by the Ship-owners and customer needs. Wallem also has shore staff to match crew nationality in its offices around the world. Captain Fared Khan says, “We expect high standards of safety and environmental compliance from our seafarers and they in turn can expect a strong safety culture, commitment to continuous learning and development and a respectful and professional environment onboard. Our stringent evaluation process ensures that only ‘Wallem Professional Seafarers’ are posted on our managed vessels; delivering quality service to our customers.” Wallem’s Marine Human Resource (Marine HR) Quality Policy is aimed at ensuring all vessels are manned by professional, qualified, certified, experienced and medically fit seafarers in accordance with national and international laws to meet our customers’ requirements. In addition, the policy states that Wallem “will treat all seafarers fairly and respectfully without bias based on a seafarer's colour, creed, gender, race or religion either in the employment or advancement of a seafarer's career.” This quality policy also covers seafarers’ responsibility to operate and maintain vessels according to Wallem's Safety and Quality Management system and continually support better understanding of our business needs, culture and values.

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

The safety of the people shall be the highest law – Marcus Tullius Cicero

As a company which operates in offices around the globe; with many people of multiple nationalities, inclusion, tolerance and transparency are key elements of Wallem culture. The Company is committed to ensuring a safe and respectful workplace onboard and that our seafarers and their families have all the support that they need. Our seafarers can speak up and raise concerns without fear of bias or retribution on any issues they may have via the email portal, ‘Seavoice@Wallem’. Captain Khan says, “Our Dignity@Sea program was designed to ensure a respectful atmosphere is found onboard and that all our seafarers; both male and female, are a respected part of our crews and that their wellbeing is taken care of. Wallem’s Wellness@Sea program is aimed at promoting healthy eating, fitness and balanced lifestyle onboard. Both programs are designed to ensure a respectful, mindful and professional workplace for all seafarers.” Various programs such as the Women of Wallem (WoW), a community organisation with chapters in the communities from which we draw seafarers, provide much needed support for our seafarers and their families. As an active industry partner, Wallem staff regularly take part in shipping forums and seminars to contribute our knowledge and experience to the development of the industry. This philosophy extends to life onboard where we have a mentoring program on Wallem-managed ships.

Wallem also has a Just Culture process in place, which is part of our Marine HR Quality Policy and stressed at training both onshore and at sea. Both positive and negative case studies are shared with our fleet via quarterly newsletters so that we can learn from one another and continuously think how we can do better. All of these factors contribute to why we have one of the highest retention rates in the industry, with a loyal pool of 8,000 seafarers, many of whom have more than 25 years of experience on all types of vessels.

Training and Development Wallem invests a lot of resources in training and professional skills enhancement – both at our in-house training centres and onboard. We have a total of eight global Wallem Maritime Training Centres (WMTC) which are located in four different countries: China, India, the Philippines and Ukraine. In addition we have a strong sourcing presence in various other countries. “Our priority remains on maintaining a high quality of service by having full control on resourcing and retention of our crew, says Captain Khan. These in-house training centres are one of our big differentiators; especially as the training offered is valueadded. The training mainly covers safety, operations and customer/owner-specific needs; including practical training on specific vessel types. Simulator-based courses

and social media awareness; in addition to comprehensive piracy awareness training - so that our seafarers are well prepared for any eventuality. What’s more, the training philosophy at our global training centres reflects the culture of continuous quality improvement at Wallem – both to raise the bar and to ensure that the business is sustainable. The Company is committed to continuously encourage and provide resources to our sea staff to upgrade their skills to improve performance for enhanced safety, quality, efficient operations and to serve our customers’ needs.

take a realistic approach with theory discussion followed by application. They are conducted on the latest state-ofthe-art navigational, engine room and ECDIS simulators. Wallem trainees are evaluated for every course that they attend and final completion certificates are only issued with 100% attendance for each course. We also ensure that Wallem is a good fit for the seafarers and they in turn can fit with Wallem culture and values. Training at Wallem takes a holistic approach in order to effectively prepare our seafarers for life onboard. This includes awareness training on work-life balance at sea

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

Mutual learning between the trainees and the trainers is encouraged and this keeps all parties abreast of the latest management, technological innovations, legislative and other developments in the fast changing world of shipping. Performance is monitored regularly in order to identify ways in which our in-house training can be improved. In addition, continuous feedback is also actively encouraged from all stakeholders including charterers, ships and safety teams ashore and course content is kept updated to reflect this.

The Wallem Professional Seafarer For Captain Khan however, achieving safety and operational excellence is not only a matter of competence and training but also of attitude and mindset.

He tells us that, “Wallem seafarers are expected to take PRIDE (Personal Responsibility in Delivering Excellence) in their commitment to both Wallem and our customers (Ship Owners). The Wallem seafarer should ideally have the following ten attributes: a safety mindset, the right attitude, be engaged and motivated, have good physical/ mental health, business acumen, ownership and pride, the right experience, quality assurance, leadership and management skills and be well trained.” Having a safety mindset is by far the most important of these attributes. In line with our motto, “The safety goal is simple – Zero”, we expect our seafarers to treat safety as the main priority as we want them to return home safely to their loved ones.

to actively buy in to safety and we stress that our seafarers must take their safety - and that of those around them into their own hands.” As part of Wallem’s commitment to continuously improve safety onboard, a “Roadmap to Safety and Operational Excellence” was launched, with a number of initiatives aimed at helping seafarers take ownership of safety. Life onboard is traditionally very hierarchical, with younger seafarers often afraid to speak out. One such initiative at Wallem which is aimed at promoting safety best practices by helping to break down this power distance gap is the “STOP card”. The idea is that any seafarer, no matter the rank, can hold up the card if they feel that something is not safe or not right. Just holding it up is enough and the

Safety & Responsibility Wallem’s Safety Management System states that every ship must have a safety officer onboard. In addition, each seafarer onboard has a distinct role and responsibility in promoting safe practices. We believe that everyone on the ship is responsible for safety” Captain Khan says, “and one of the key elements we continually try to impress is that, no matter whether you are junior or senior seafarer, when safety is concerned, all voices are equal.” Captain Khan adds, “We firmly believe that seafarers have

LEAD STORY

person who has been shown the card then has to question why it was raised and address whatever issue there is. In addition to being carried by every seafarer, STOP cards can be found at various locations onboard the ship. Captain Khan says, “This initiative has been very successful and we are seeing a real culture shift, with our seafarers becoming more empowered to use the card and take greater responsibility about safety.” Another such initiative has been organising special ‘safety dinners’ onboard during which the crew are thanked for their continued commitment and those who have shown exemplary practices are singled out and congratulated. In turn, crew are invited to sign Wallem flags as a symbol of their commitment to safety and to the Company. (Turn to pages 23-24 to see photos of this initiative onboard various Wallem ships).

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

Engagement & Communication For Captain Khan, engagement or ‘the people factor’ is the key part of the puzzle. “We believe that having seafarers who feel engaged and happy is essential to boost morale onboard, given that seafaring can be quite a lonely profession, ” he says. Indeed our seafarers are the lifeblood of our Company and so it is crucial that they feel valued and engaged. Regular Wallem Fleet Officers Meetings (WFOMs), seafarer-related stories in the company newsletter, 'Wallem News' and magazine, 'True North' all help ensure that our seafarers have a voice and feel proud to be part of the Wallem family and committed to delivering excellence in every aspect of seafaring, including safety.

Another initiative being taken to increase seafarer engagement is the launch of a new state-of-the-art system which will help us gather everything which is crewingrelated together in one place. For the seafarer everything from personal data, pay slip, appraisals, training needs and reporting readiness to join will be accessed via the system. Captain Khan believes that this will definitely help to close the gap between sea and shore.

Connectivity and Work-life Balance Once onboard, this awareness and training is reinforced through the Wellness@Sea program developed in conjunction with a clinical psychologist which addresses mental and emotional health.” says Captain Khan. The program covers health and wellbeing and stresses the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

this by delivering professional mariners with the required skills of trade. This is supported by 24/7 support from the shore team to ensure safe and successful voyages across the fleet. Wallem is focused on delivering safety and operational excellence to both our internal and external customers. We strive to be the industry leader as far as safety, the environment and vetting goes and in never making the same mistake twice. We maintain the condition and value of the assets in our care whilst respecting our budgets and growing our own leaders from within the Fleet. On delivering safety and operational excellence, Captain Khan says “Our legacy should not be measured in injuryfree days or incident statistics,” he said, “but in the lives we have touched or changed as we journey towards our goal of excellence, be they colleagues, families, friends or siblings – many of whom are invisibly intertwined in our quest.”

Awareness on work-life balance at sea is a key aspect of our pre-joining safety briefings and training sessions One of the measures we take in order to combat fatigue at sea is the provision of leisure and recreational equipment on board. We also provide training and guidance to both senior and junior officers in Maritime Labour Convention 2006 compliance. Our main goal is zero accidents and providing a safe working environment well above the statutory compliance requirements. With over 60% of our fleet with internet connection, training is aimed at helping seafarers cope with an increasing connected life at sea and the challenges of today’s rapidly evolving world. Social media awareness training is also included to give seafarers guidance and insight into making the right decisions about sharing aspects of their lives at sea online. Cyber security is one of the hottest topics in the industry right now given that ships rely heavily on technology to navigate safely. Captain Khan says that Wallem takes this matter seriously, “We will soon launch cyber awareness online training course on ‘Wallem Academy’, our in-house training portal, for both our shore and seastaff. We are also collaborating with a vendor on producing a cyberawareness video which will provide our seafarers with insight on this complex issue.”

The Big Picture

From Sea to Shore Wallem’s commitment to its seafarers extends beyond life at sea. We are committed to supporting and facilitating the continual professional development of our seafarers throughout their entire careers at sea and onshore. Captain Khan says, “Around 80% of the Marine Safety department in Wallem Ship Management are ex-seafarers from Wallem-managed vessels. Many of the leadership team in our company also started their careers at Wallem as young trainees or junior officers onboard.” Thanks to Wallem’s global presence across a range of maritime services, there are therefore a diverse range of shore-based roles open to seafarers from technical, marine to insurance or port agency managers or shorebased marine support personnel. Captain Khan knows himself about how a fulfilling career ashore can be. After 20 years at sea, he has worked in various roles looking after Marine Safety, Marine HR and technical matters ashore, working up the career ladder to his current role. A big thank you to our Norwegian student, Henrik Greve who conducted this interview during his summer internship with the Sales and Marketing team.

ur colleagues in Wallem Myanmar acted as local representative for charterers on the call of the M.V. Bao Long. The bulk carrier arrived in Yangon on 14th June from China carrying a shipment of steel products. Included was a relatively small project cargo, consisting of long beams which are part of a zinc roofing factory. Due to the size and dimensions of this project cargo (with each beam 74 feet long and around 8.5 MT in weight), it needed to be stowed on deck. In their role as local representatives, our colleagues in Wallem Myanmar were responsible for arranging suitable transport. In this case, a special 60 FT trailer (not standard size) was required which was quite a logistical challenge given that only three exist in Myanmar!

Sailor Rescued after Extensive Search Operation

Wallem Crew in Dramatic Rescue

O

n 4th July, Wallem seafarers onboard the Orion Leader carried out the successful rescue of a Canadian sailor who was in distress off the West Coast of Mexico. Thanks to the Captain and crew’s determination to keep an eye out for the vessel, it was successful spotted and the sailor was rescued. Managing Director David Price thanked him and his crew on their rescue efforts. The captain and crew of the Orion Leader also received a message of thanks from the US Coast Guard. Well done team for doing Wallem proud!

I

n the early afternoon of May 23rd, and while on her way from Brazil to Singapore, the M.V. True Patriot received a distress call on the VHF. This was followed by the crew spotting a distress signal in the distance. Despite having to veer significantly off course, Captain Deepanjan Ganguli immediately and without hesitation insisted that the vessel turn around to begin search and rescue. Luckily he and his crew spotted the sailor’s life raft just in time – as it had begun to take on water and was sinking. However, attempts to lower the vessel’s rescue boat were in vain due to the unfavourable weather conditions (with strong winds and high swells) – and so the only option was to manoeuver the vessel close to the sailor’s life raft, throw him a buoy and pull him out of the sea to safety – which was accomplished successfully. Managing Director David Price congratulated the Captain and his crew on their rescue efforts. They also received a message of thanks from the Mauritius National Coast Guard and Mauritius MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre) for their prompt and valued assistance in this Search and Rescue which saved the life of the sailor.

Captain Ganguli has been nominated for Wallem's 'Seafarer of the Year' award and shortlisted for Lloyd's List Asia, 'Seafarer of the Year' award.

EVENT

Wallem Fleet Officers Meeting (WFOM) Manila

W

allem Fleet Officers Meeting (WFOM) are organised throughout the year in our training centres in eight locations spread over four different countries (India, Ukraine, The Philippines and China). The aim of these gatherings of our ships’ officers and senior Wallem Ship Management team, which in essence is a meeting of minds and hearts, is to recap on best practices, close the gap between ship and shore, increase seafarer engagement with Wallem’s culture and values and align expectations. Since training at Wallem in-house global training centres is customer/owner specific, we also arrange special customer seminars to coincide with these gatherings.

WFOM & Viken Day Seminar – Manila, The Philippines On 18th and 19th August, WFOM and Viken day seminars were held at Westminster’s training centre and Diamond Hotel in Manila respectively. After an intense 3 days, all the participants enjoyed the opportunity to get to know one another better at an evening cocktail held at the Maritime Museum in Malate, Manila.

WFOM – Manila, The Philippines This was a particularly special WFOM as it was both the first time for us to hold a seminar at our Manila training centre, and the first time that seafarers from Ukraine and India joined in. In addition to a wonderful two days of engagement and interaction, everyone was treated to delicious lunch and dinner served by Westminster’s own Trainer Cook and aspiring trainees. The focus of this WFOM was on safety and compliance – with the senior Wallem Ship Management team present to reiterate both their commitment to safety at sea and their undivided attention and availability to support our seafarers. Managing Director of Wallem Ship Management, David Price spoke about Wallem’s commitment towards safety and compliance. Marine Director, Fared Khan focused on the Wallem Professional Seafarer and held a workshop on Safety and Operational Excellence. Managing Director of Wallem Europe, Wiebke Schuett explained the need for exceeding our customer’s expectations. Fleet Manager, Technical from our Singapore office, Praveen Shukla spoke on issues related to bunkering.

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

Viken Day Seminar – Manila, The Philippines The Viken day seminar delved into the topic of ‘Pride in the workplace’. Ship Owner’s representative and Technical Director of Viken Shipping, Vidar Winciansen opened the seminar by welcoming everyone and highlighting the company’s commitment to safe practices onboard. The seminar was attended by all crew from officers to ratings, with Indians and Ukrainian officers joining their counterparts from The Philippines. This was followed by a promise from David Price on Wallem's commitment and support to its seafarers. Dr. Bayani and Mrs. Aparna Sachar then gave motivational talks focused on wellbeing, health, safety and responsibility of crew towards their assigned work. The seminar concluded with a presentation by Praveen Shulka (which had kindly been prepared by our IT consultant, Rod Steel) on digitisation and new technology in shipping. This was received well but also raised many questions about how our seafarers can better prepare themselves for the changes that digitisation and new technology will bring. The attendance at the seminar of the senior management from both Wallem and Viken was a clear indication of senior management commitment to our seafarers and to keeping them safe at sea.

The next WFOMs planned for this year will be in Odessa and India respectively (in November). Details of next year’s WFOMs will be published early 2017.

CYBER SECURITY

New Cyber Security Course Launched on Wallem Academy

K

nowing how to keep one’s information safe and secure is becoming increasingly important in today’s connected world. This is particularly so in the shipping industry given its heavy reliance upon Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for services ranging from crew management to cargo documents to port arrangements, etc. Indeed our managed ships rely heavily on technology to navigate safely and are vulnerable to cyber threats both intentional and unintentional; especially so with the increasing availability of Internet onboard. Many of you will have seen recent reports in the media detailing various instances of what is being described as cyber-crime - criminal activities carried out by means of computers or the Internet. Wallem is not immune to this trend - we have in recent months detected several attempts to trick staff into making unwarranted payments. Fortunately such attempts have been thwarted by the diligence of the staff members concerned. Awareness about cyber security and adhering to good cyber security practices are therefore both essential to minimise the risks of cyber-attacks both on shore and at sea. Group Head of Learning and Development Ben Shao tells us about the new Cyber Security course on Wallem Academy, our in-house training site which aims to help us all do just that. Ben says: ‘Cybersecurity’ is a Wallem specific e-learning course which aims at providing guidance for all our colleagues, both at sea and ashore on how to protect our important and confidential data from phishing attacks. This course is designed to raise general awareness on what forms of cyber-crime exist and the steps that should be taken to avoid falling prey to them. All staff need be aware of these issues so as to protect both Wallem in its business dealings and, indeed, themselves in their personal lives.

Topics include: safe computing, safe remote and mobile computing and protecting cardholder data. By the end of the training you will know more about how to protect both Wallem and yourself against cyber attacks. For example you will recognise electronic threat warning signs, have a greater awareness of social engineering, identify password best practices and find out how to minimise security risks in all forms of electronic communication.” The course is available now on Wallem Academy.

NEW OFFICE

Presenting our New Hong Kong Office

W

e are delighted to share the news of our recent move (on Monday 19th September) to our new office in Hong Kong where the Wallem Group is headquartered. With its open plan concept, our new and modern office offers more meeting rooms and a variety of new space types which will promote further collaboration. In addition, our investment in the latest new technology will enable our agility, efficiency and overall productivity. A big thanks and congratulations to all involved who worked so hard in the months leading up to this move to ensure that the transition was as smooth as possible. On Wednesday 21st September, while our Board of Directors was in town, a small office opening party was held. As well as the official cutting of the ribbon (see following article), a traditional Chinese roast pig cutting ceremony was held to celebrate our opening. Colleagues from different departments gathered along with our Board members and Directors for food and drinks and to enjoy the new extendable cafĂŠ space together and congratulate one another on a very successful move. We look forward to serving our customers from our new office.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Wallem Board Celebrate 10th Anniversary

W

allem’s Board of Directors (Edward Buchan, Hans Olav Lindal, Nigel Hill and Tom Steckmest) were recently in Hong Kong for the annual board meeting which took place in our new office. They took some time to talk to us about the decision made 10 years ago to acquire the company and bring it back into the Wallem family, what sets Wallem apart, what they are most proud of and what the future holds for the Group:

To what extent has Wallem’s long history and proud heritage shaped it into the company it is today?

How would you say that Wallem is different to other maritime companies in terms of values and culture?

There are very few maritime companies which can boast the long and interesting history that Wallem has. Wallem’s entrepreneurial beginnings have undoubtedly infused the Group with a similar spirit and contributed to the large network of many different businesses carried on today.

It is difficult to compare our own values and culture with that of other maritime companies when it is to be hoped that everyone is striving towards improving standards across the industry. What is important is to make sure that everyone in the Wallem Group conducts themselves, and the businesses that we run, according to the highest possible standards. With that in mind, we have always liked the idea and mantra of ‘True North’ as a means of expressing the type of culture that we should all be adopting.

The combination of that pioneering spirit and rich history certainly sets the Group apart from most others in the market.

How important was bringing the company back into the Wallem family 10 years ago? It is true to say that, prior to their decision to invest, both Tom, the great grandson of Haakon Wallem and Nigel had had close connections with the Wallem Group, the latter dating back to his time working for Hill Samuel which coincidentally bought the Group from the Wallem family in the same year he joined the bank. Nigel says: “I would say that 90% - 95% of the investment decision was based purely on business considerations and on what we both saw as an excellent and exciting long term investment. However, it would be wrong to say that there was no emotion involved.” Tom says: “The deal to buy back Wallem, and the family name, was, of course, quite different to the usual transactions that I am involved with. From a business perspective, I like to think that there is some resonance that the Group still holds these longstanding family connections, particularly in Scandinavia.

What have been the most memorable moments of the past 10 years? That’s a difficult one, there have been so many! We have always enjoyed the Board visits to the regional offices and the chance to meet some of the many people within the Group. Cutting the ribbon on our in-house crew training centre in Qingdao, our first in China, was a particular early highlight. Handing out long service awards to an incredibly long queue of people, with incredibly long and proud years of service to Wallem, in Tokyo would definitely be another.

The Wallem Board of Directors with CEO Simon Doughty (far right)

There have, of course, been some difficult moments too, not least the potentially very serious incident with the MT Elektra, a fully laden tanker that hit an uncharted rock in the Magellan straits. The courage shown by the crew not to abandon the ship, which had no power and was drifting towards the rocks, and the commitment and professionalism shown by everyone involved in the response which ensured that the ship was saved and not a drop of oil spilt was truly inspiring!

the long term. Many investment decisions these days are purely based on short term goals and with short term exits in mind… These can give rise to decisions being made which are not necessarily to the long term benefit of the business itself. If we are able to keep growing the business for the long term and offer long-lasting and exciting career opportunities, that seems to us to present the most attractive and sustainable outcome for the business and ourselves as investors.

Apart from the obvious concern with any incident where our crews or employees are at risk of injury or worse we have always been impressed by the professionalism and care shown by everyone involved in each case to ensure that such risks have been minimised. And the annual parties are always memorable!

We are, of course, very ambitious for the Group and, if the right opportunities present themselves, there is no reason why we wouldn’t consider enlarging the Group by way of acquisition. However, long term organic growth has always seemed to us to be the most sustainable way for the Group to achieve its very significant potential.

What aspect of being part of Wallem are you most proud of?

What challenges do you see in Wallem’s future and how do you plan to overcome them?

It has been said many, many times that ‘Wallem is a people business’, but it also always bears repeating. We are proud of the fact that Wallem takes great care in looking after its people and is always striving to make sure that working for Wallem is a safe and enjoyable experience and offers an exciting and challenging career path. We do, though, take great pride in being associated with such a famous maritime name.

Wallem is focused on consistent, sustainable and organic growth. Why is this strategy so important? From a business perspective, our geographical location with the core of the business in China and our historical connection with and very wide geographical spread of business in the Far East clearly sets us apart from many of our competitors. One of the many other areas where Wallem really is different to its competitors is that, as shareholders, we are there for

The world moves so fast these days it can be hard to keep up with the pace of change. Ensuring that our systems and working practices are continuously updated and improved is a key and continual area for investment. The on-going shortage of well-trained crew is another challenge (and opportunity) for us and one which we consider to be of the highest priority for investment. Money and investment can help to ease or solve many such challenges but, as we have already noted, it is people that count. Ensuring that we always have a good and increasing pool of well-trained talent available will be a key component in overcoming challenges which arise. EVENT

Wallem Welcomes the Sørlandet to Hong Kong

T

he world’s oldest full rigged tall ship; the Norwegian Sørlandet sailed into Hong Kong harbour on a beautiful morning in June. The ship, which was built in 1927, is on a two year circumnavigation, crewed by students from A+ World Academy, an onboard boarding school comprising of international students from six different countries. Thanks to vast experience in providing quality and efficient port services for a wide range of vessel types, Wallem Ship Agencies was appointed port agent for the vessel. Wallem therefore assisted with all pre-arrival arrangements and inport services for the vessel’s stay in Hong Kong. Prior to the vessel’s arrival, Mikael Johansson, CEO of the Sørlandet said, “We are very grateful for your kind support to us. Everyone on board and here in the office in Norway is excited for the vessel to berth in Hong Kong!” On 24th June, we took the opportunity to invite a group of customers to enjoy a reception onboard the ship. They were also treated to a special tour of the ship by the Captain. There was a great turnout with customers expressing their delight at the chance to go onboard this historic vessel and learn all about it.

SAFETY FOCUS

Committed to Safety

T

o emphasise the importance of continual attention to safety onboard, and to keep our crew motivated, engaged and committed, special ‘safety dinners’ were organised throughout the month of September. This initiative is part of Wallem Ship Management’s “Roadmap to Safety and Operational Excellence”, the goal of which is zero injuries, zero spills and zero accidents.

Appreciation and expectations These dinners are a great opportunity to firstly thank and appreciate all staff onboard; especially those who have shown exemplary safety practices. They are also a good chance to set clear expectations regarding safe operations, shown in a personal letter from our Managing Director of Ship Management, David Price which is presented to each seafarer. Our seafarers are then asked to make a pledge of commitment to safety at all times (both to themselves and their fellow crew members) by signing their name on the Wallem flag.

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

SAFETY FOCUS

Open communication An open atmosphere is encouraged and key areas of safety and most common causes of injury are discussed with sharings from all sea staff to bring greater awareness to this very critical issue.

Focus on safety Safety is an integral part of Wallem culture but events onboard such as this are aimed at ensuring that we do not become complacent and that safety is kept at the forefront of every Wallem seafarer’s mind.

The Wallem Ship Management Hong Kong team signing on Wallem flag, vouching their commitment to safety, compliance, engagement and service excellence.

We would like to thank our seafarers for contributing towards our goal of zero injuries, zero spills and zero accidents through their commitment to delivering safety and operational excellence every day. Issue 3 2016

FEATURE

Staying Anchored

A Wallem seafarer talks about her career path at sea and what drives and inspires her.

P

riyanka Khillan is a Second Officer currently sailing with Wallem on the Aframax oil tanker, the M.T. Tofteviken. Priyanka tells us about her career path so far, why she is delighted to work with Wallem Ship Management and how she sees herself as a mentor to junior cadets:

Priyanka says: "I joined the Merchant Navy in August 2008. I did my pre sea training at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai Mumbai then joined Shipping Corporation of India. I completed my cadetship with Shipping Corporation of India onboard a bulk carrier and a product tanker and then continued my studies, passing my Functions course from Applied Research Institute, New Delhi, completing my BSc Nautical Science Degree along with my 2nd Mates.

After sailing as Third Officer with SCI for 1 contract I got the opportunity to work with Wallem Ship Management. At a time when most of the companies are hesitant in taking women officers, Wallem Ship Management stands like a shining beacon of hope for Women Seafarers. The Wallem Delhi office provided me with the best possible facilities and guidance for my smooth transition to foreign shipping. Making the move to Wallem was the best decision I have ever made.

TRUE NORTH THE WAY FORWARD

I am proud to say that I am a part of the shipping industry and I hope that females will prove their worth to all the sceptics and stand tall alongside their male seafarers."

I joined the M.T. Telleviken as a Third Officer. It was such a big learning experience for me but I can honestly say that my senior officers really nurtured and guided me throughout the whole contract.

I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the efforts made by Wallem in providing a strong base for both myself and my female colleagues' successful careers in the merchant navy.

All my successive contracts with Wallem have been accompanied by a strong learning curve. Thanks to the practical knowledge gained onboard the ships and theoretical knowledge I received at the Foreign Owner and Ship Managers Association (FOSMA), I am happy to have recently passed my Chief Mates examination. I am presently sailing as a Second Officer on tankers.

With the recent efforts by the government and Merchantile Marine Department (MMD) for women empowerment and sheer hard work by companies such as Wallem, I am proud to say that I am a part of the shipping industry and I hope that females will prove their worth to all the sceptics and stand tall alongside their male seafarers."

I am often approached by my juniors for guidance on switching companies. I always feel proud in recommending Wallem as the premier company for upcoming female officers. Every Wallem-managed ship has the best safety standards and respectful onboard environment - I can honestly say that I have never experienced any kind of discrimination onboard. These days with slowly increasing numbers of female officers in the shipping industry, companies such as Wallem are leading by example.

Having just received her Chief Mates COC in July, Priyanka is excited for her future career at sea. She tells us that she now looks forward to doing her Master examinations in the near future after having completed her required sea time. But Priyanka is not stopping there. After she achieves her Masters, Priyanka says that she would like to ideally continue her studies in Nautical Science.

COMMUNITY

Supporting Seafarers & Local Communities

T

he Women of Wallem (WoW) is an non-profit organization aimed at providing support for our seafarers and their families. With different ‘chapters’ in our seafarers’ home towns, WoW regularly organises various community outreach programs and philanthropic activities related to health, wellness, education and well-being. Let’s have a look at what our Women of Wallem have been doing over the past few months:

Helping Children in Kolkata

Support for Our Seafarers & Their Families

Thanks to Wallem, the Kolkata chapter of Women of Wallem (WoW) donated funds towards the repair of the roof of the Child Empowerment Centre of St. James' Church in Kolkata, India. The centre is used to hold tutorial classes for underprivileged children. In addition to tutorials, the children are given a snack and take part in other fun activities and educational field trips to motivate them to study hard.

Flu Vaccine Program

Free Cooking Lessons!

Since 2015, Women of Wallem (WoW) has arranged for free flu vaccines for seafarers, their dependents and staff. Unlike the common cold, influenza can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications. The latest of these vaccine programs was held by WoW on 16th July in the Westminster office in the Philippines.

On 10th September, a group of our seafarers’ family members got together at the galley (kitchen) of the Westminster training centre in the Philippines for a free cooking lesson. The idea behind this is to equip our seafarers’ wives with the skills to help them start a small business for their family. Everyone very much enjoyed this wonderful opportunity from Westminster head chef, Nick Balaguer who graciously volunteered his time. Another lesson was planned for 24th September.

WoW believes that this is a very important program in support of seafarers since being healthy and having healthy families at home is one less thing for seafarers to worry about. Thank you to the WoW ladies who ensured that this program was a great success.

Many thanks to the WoW volunteers who are helping our seafarers in their local communities!

Wallem Europe Team Conquer the 3 Peaks for Charity

A

fter months of grueling training, the Wallem Europe team comprising Maria Hitziger, Ingo Linde and Lee Whiteoak completed the Three Peaks Challenge which involved hiking to the top of the UK’s highest mountains within a 24 hour period – all in aid of the Sailors’ Society. The Wallem Europe team tackled the mighty Ben Nevis first – and what an incredible view it was from the summit (1,344m above sea level). After a few hour’s drive to the Lake District, they then made their way up Helvellyn (950m above sea level). Although it was very early in the morning and they were really tired, they greatly enjoyed the hike as everything was covered in fog and all they had for company was some sheep! The final hike was up Snowdon in Wales (1,085m above sea level). So much for summer - it rained incessantly for hours and was incredibly windy. However, the team powered on and reached the summit, marking the successful completion of the 3 Peak Challenge. A challenge indeed! The team raised in excess of £3,000 and would like to thank all their supporters for their generous donations which will enable seafarers around the world to be supported at sea, in port and at home through the Sailor’s Society.

Our German Apprentices

I

Summer Internships at Wallem HQ

n Germany, many students take part in the German vocational education and training system, or the ‘dual training scheme’ which is highly recognized worldwide due to its combination of theory and training embedded in a real-life work environment. About 50 percent of all school-leavers in the country undergo vocational training provided by companies which consider the dual system the best way to acquire skilled staff. Upon completion of her apprenticeship and after enjoying the experience of working at Wallem so much, Jessica Holst accepted the offer of a full time position and is currently employed as Fleet Personnel Assistant. Niklas Kroening began his apprenticeship on 1st August 2014 and David Dybeck began his on 1st August 2015. All three apprentices cited Wallem’s good reputation, heritage and international appeal as reasons for what attracted them to the company.

A

gain this year, Wallem welcomed summer interns to our Wallem HQ. Adrian Lam spent time in the Technical Department, Henrik Greve in Group Communications, Melissa Christodoulou in Procurement and Cheryl Wang, Helene Lindal and Regina Tang spent time working on projects for business processing. When asked what they enjoyed most about their summer internships they cited the supportive working environment, fantastic opportunity to obtain relevant work experience and the friendly people.
