CELEBRATING THE PAST BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE The year 2014 was a defining and highly productive one for the YMCA. We celebrated 70 years of delivering quality programs & services to the Greater Wallingford community as we continued to move forward with plans for renovations & expansions to the YMCA facilities. We expanded our outreach with our mission-driven programs and established strategic partnerships with CrossFit Triton & Faulkner Physical Therapy Group. We continued to invest in our people. The staff of the YMCA are the main reason why we have made the accomplishments & impact that we have and we now employ over 250 staff who care deeply about those we serve. Through vision, strategic direction and our dedicated staff, we launched several new programs & initiatives including the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, CrossFit, an Adult Golf League and instituted Healthy Eating & Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in all of our childcare programs. As we write this letter, the YMCA is expanding swim lesson programming & aquatic wellness programs to serve members transitioning from Faulkner Physical Therapy Group. Their staff will be providing important services & opportunities for our members as we provide a venue for their aquatic therapy programs. We are excited about this partnership and ask that you join us in welcoming our new friends to the YMCA family. We have been fortunate to have had the guidance and support of a dedicated & outstanding Board of Directors and multiple committees, each comprised of local business & community leaders. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all of these individuals who have served tirelessly during their tenure and to also recognize our new Capital Campaign Steering Committee who will be leading the vision and future of our YMCA facilities. In 2014, the YMCA lost a dear friend, benefactor and founding father of our organization in Frederick Ulbrich Jr. As one of the first members of the YMCA back in 1944, we have been so fortunate to have his support and advocacy for so many years. He will be dearly missed both personally and professionally. We enter 2015 with continued momentum and energy to continue making this causedriven organization increasingly impactful & relevant to the growing community challenges and needs for which we serve. Our Y is challenged with aging & oversubscribed aquatic and locker room facilities, inadequate gym, childcare & family space for community recreation and the demand for wellness facilities to meet the evolving needs of our community. Our campaign for the future addresses each of these areas, ensuring that our facilities will continue to support Wallingford for another successful 70 years. We would like to personally thank our YMCA employees & volunteers for the successes of 2014. Thank you to all of the members, program participants and community partners for being a part of the Wallingford Family YMCA! Sincerely,
Sean Doherty Executive Director and Y-Guy
Patty Dyer-Powers Chief Volunteer Officer and Y-Gal

COMMUNITY CHALLENGES
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We know when we work together, we move more individuals, families and communities forward. Every day, Y staff, volunteers, members, friends and community partners work side-by-side to tackle the important issues impacting Wallingford.
HOW WE HELP
Kids make friends, have fun and experience the adventure of a lifetime at Camp Ulbrich. The YMCA is committed to providing a safe and fun environment for children to spend their summer. Whether it be playing soccer, climbing our rock wall, swimming with friends or just spending time with their group, they will be sure to have a summer to remember.
DID YOU KNOW? Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death in children under age 14.
HOW WE HELP
DID YOU KNOW? Children are most likely to engage in destructive behavior during the hours of 3:00-6:00PM on school days.
HOW WE HELP Our School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE) program is located in all 8 elementary schools and offers safe & fun care from 6:45AM until the start of school and from dismissal until 6:00PM. We stress a healthy spirit, mind and body. To help achieve this, we offer healthy snacks in both the morning and afternoon. Homework time is held every afternoon, with staff always present and ready to offer assistance. We utilize either the gym or playground daily to help keep the children active. We also offer wraparound care for Kindergarteners at our KinderHouse and Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School (ELMS) for at the Rotary/YMCA Teen Center. Upward Bound is designed to help at-risk youth in grades six through eight grow & develop in an environment with positive role models. Students are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities and positive self-expression. Upward Bound is supported by the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford, Rotary Foundation and the Liberty Bank Foundation.
Children thrive in our youth swim lessons as they learn life-saving confidence. Swimmers start in SKIP, learning to float in the water with their parents, becoming Pikes, Eels, Flying Fish and sometimes even Dolphins. Every April we hold Be Water Safe Week, which is designed to teach children basic water safety skills such as kicking, arm strokes, putting their face in the water and floating. It combines swimming and water safety skills at a minimal cost to ensure the safely of Wallingford’s youth.
DID YOU KNOW? 20% of children in our county are living below the poverty level. Health behaviors associated with chronic diseases are shaped by socioeconomic status, whereby persons with lower educational attainment or lower income are more likely to smoke, be less physically active, or less likely to consume a healthy diet.
HOW WE HELP We are proud of our heritage and commitment to make our characterbuilding, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. Through Membership for All, these funds are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. Annual events, such as Scuba Santa and the Easter Egg-stravaganza, give parents & children much needed free family time to bring them closer together.
DID YOU KNOW? In Connecticut, 1 in 3 children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade and 1 in 4 high schoolers are obese or overweight.
HOW WE HELP Supported by the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford, the Bank of America Foundation and the Town of Wallingford Department of Public Health, Fit-to-Go is our response to the growing youth obesity crisis. Elementary and middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition, develop a focused & realistic workout program they can stick with, have tons of fun doing healthy activities, make new friends and feel better about themselves.
DID YOU KNOW? 60% of adults in Connecticut are obese or overweight
HOW WE HELP Health, well-being & fitness is more than just making sure you run on the treadmill every day. We empower people to maintain or improve their health & strength through personal training, exercise classes and more. Between our East & West Side branches, there are over 100 group exercise classes available. No matter one’s age or fitness level, there is a class for anyone at the Y.
DID YOU KNOW? 20.5% of all respondents to the Community Needs Assessment by Hartford Hospital said they have been told by a health care professional that they have pre-diabetes, diabetes, diabetes during pregnancy. One in three people have pre-diabetes, but only 10% know.
HOW WE HELP
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people. Another 86 million have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes, Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in individuals over age 60. Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives.
DID YOU KNOW? Approximately 40.4% of people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This year, there will be an estimated 22,070 new cases in Connecticut alone.
HOW WE HELP The YMCA and LIVESTRONG have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. No one experiences cancer in the same way. Participants come to the program with different physical challenges and lifestyle goals. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA provides them with individualized attention and an approach to recovery that targets the areas they need to rebuild. There’s no competition here. This 12-week small group exercise program is offered free. The Fishbein/YMCA Community Day & Road Race is held each year and all proceeds go to support LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. This annual event begins with 5K & 10K Road Races and a 2K Walk Strong to Live, followed by Youth Races & a Kid’s Fun Run. The day culminates in Community Day, a free celebration for the Wallingford community, filled with rides, activities & vendors.
Support adults of all ages and abilities in their pursuit of a healthy lifestyle.
OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Combat childhood obesity and prevent chronic disease for children through adults. Provide nurturing, reliable and affordable child care, offering peace of mind to parents and development of infants/toddlers.
As Wallingford grows, evolves and becomes even more vibrant - so must Support busy, working families in the YMCA. We envision greater their desire for time together, possibilities than what our current engaged in healthy activities. situation allows. What can we do Provide a vibrant, social gathering to continue being an effective space for people to connect. resource & influential partner of the community? Create a stronger, healthier workforce to help create a more vibrant and thriving economy. Develop partnerships that create a strong network of support for the children, adults and families in our community. Provide opportunities for more children to experience and appreciate nature and the life-changing experience of camp. Offer more aquatics opportunities for fun and safety in the water. Offer more special needs programming and mental health support to remain inclusive to all. Ensure all people in our community have access to the range of programs and services that build character and improve healthy outcomes. Continue to ensure that no one is turned away due to inability to pay. Improve the quality of life for all who live and work in Wallingford.
THE NEED FOR MORE EAST SIDE CHALLENGES • 1953 construction • Deterioration in natatorium • Outdated locker rooms
In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that our current facilities are not adequately meeting the needs of our community. We envision greater possibilities than what our current situation allows. Our future capital plans will help make our vision become a reality for the community.
• Limited accessibility for people with mobility issues • Teen Center and Kindergarten center are both 100 year old houses, not program designed areas • Lack of available program and administrative & meeting space • Day camp close to capacity
WEST SIDE CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES • Escalating lease payment • Securing ownership for future construction of more aquatic space. • Possible future space for childcare • Limited accessibility for people with mobility issues • 9-acre lot is attractive for possible future playing fields and alternative camp space.
We asked members, community leaders and volunteers to \ assess our top capital needs. The response? Increased space, expanded pool, facility maintenance, additional parking, off-site camp, improved locker rooms and improved accessibility.
