FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen CHILD CARE Corporate Child Care
School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE)
YMCA Corporate Child Care provides more than just a place to play. We provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other. We maintain and strengthen what starts at home, giving all kinds of families the support they need to succeed. Our goal is to promote children’s emotional, social, physical and intellectual development while meeting the needs of families. We believe in the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility. We promote these values among staff and encourage teachers to plan developmentally appropriate activities that reflect these core values. For the times you can’t be there yourself, the YMCA supports your efforts to nurture the healthy growth of your child. It provides safe, affordable, high-quality care so you can have peace of mind while you work to help your family succeed. Our use of primary care givers for infants encourages open communication between the care giver & the parent and helps bridge the gap between home & the center. Our infant to staff ratio is 3:1. In an age-appropriate environment, experienced staff provides developmentally appropriate programs for each individual age group. Our curriculum is based on the interests and needs of the children and promotes emotional, social, physical and cognitive development.
School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE) is located in all 8 elementary schools, with Holy Trinity students being bused to Moses Y Beach. Our hours of operation are from 6:45AM until the start of school and from dismissal until 6:00PM. We are a state licensed facility, with caring staff to provide a safe and fun environment for children of working parents or anyone who requires such care. No one is turned away for inability to pay; we accept Care for Kids and provide financial aid. We stress a healthy spirit, mind and body. To help achieve this, we offer healthy snacks in both the morning and afternoon. Homework time is held every afternoon, with staff always present and ready to offer assistance. We utilize either the gym or playground daily to help keep the children active. Board games, tabletop activities and craft projects are also a daily part of the program. The children also participate in monthly community service projects. The YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility are some of the important things that make us different from other child care facilities.
SAGE at KinderHouse
Our SAGE at KinderHouse program operates out of the KinderHouse on 16 Wallace Ave. We are a state licensed facility, with caring staff to provide a safe and fun environment for children of working parents or anyone who requires such care. No one is turned away for inability to pay; we accept Care for Kids and provide financial aid. We provide wrap around care for students in Kindergarten. The AM program runs from 6:45AM until they are brought to the bus at noon to attend PM Kindergarten. They may then attend PM care at their school site. Students who attend AM Kindergarten are brought to the Y by the bus after dismissal, and attend the program until 6:00PM. They may also attend AM care at their school sites. Students bring their own lunch, and are provided both AM and PM snacks. Children swim once a week and have music & gym enrichment weekly. Computers are available in our media room. Games and manipulative toys are always available. Along with the gym, the children have a playscape in the back yard. The staff at KinderHouse are warm, nurturing, experienced, and fun. Come join the fun at KinderHouse!

Treat your child to a YMCA pool or gym party! Your party will be hosted by a YMCA Party Planner to ensure your child has a party to remember! You bring decorations, paper goods, food & drinks and we take care of the rest. Parties can be held on Saturday or Sunday at 12:00 and 2:30PM. All parties must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. All Day Kindergarten
The YMCA All Day Kindergarten occupies four spacious rooms on the 2nd floor of KinderHouse, located at 16 Wallace Street, Wallingford, CT. An enclosed playground, picnic tables and playscape provide a safe, outdoor area. The Wallingford YMCA was first to venture in operating a full day Kindergarten Program in the Wallingford Community and is 15 years young. Academic Program runs from 9:00AM-3:00PM. Extended Day hours meet the needs of working parents for both before and after school care, 6:45AM-9:00AM and/or 3:00PM-6:00PM. The All Day Kindergarten aims to meet the developmental needs of each child. Scheduling, pacing and rhythm of each activity are consistent with recognized principles of childhood education. These principles recognize that each child develops at his own unique rate within the general needs of his or her age group. The All Day Kindergarten provides creative opportunities and experiences which stimulate a child’s physical, social, intellectual and emotional development. Students benefit from small class size, 1:1 instruction and the presence of two teachers daily. Handwriting, phonics, math, science, social studies and reading are part our daily lessons. Enrichment programs include Reach for the Stars Reading Program, PAF (Preventing Academic Failure), Computer Tots computer classes, field trips, swim lessons, art, music, physical education and free swim. The YMCA believes that activities which involve the parents in their child’s development should be included in Kindergarten. Activities to strengthen the family unit will give families, students and teachers the chance to work, play and learn together. To schedule a visit or for more information, please contact our ADK staff Maggie Maugeri & Nancy Germain at 203-284-5328.

Upward Bound is a free program offered by the Wallingford Family YMCA designed to help students in grades six through eight grow and develop in a positive environment with positive role models. It incorporates the Y philosophy of developing the spirit, mind, and body. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. In doing so, our hope is that these youth will grow and learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives. In growing to understand themselves more completely, they will be better equipped when faced with everyday challenges. Upward Bound is supported by the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford, Rotary Foundation and the Liberty Bank Foundation. Contact Samantha Smith, Youth Support Specialist, at ssmith@wallingfordymca.org for more information.

PARTNERS IN HEALING THE WHOLE PERSON
YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects nearly 29 million people. Another 86 million have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes, but only 11 percent are aware of it. Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58% overall and by 71% in individuals over age 60. Participants gather in a relaxed classroom setting and work together in small groups to learn how to incorporate healthier eating and moderate physical activity into their daily lives. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is led by a trained Lifestyle Coach. This one year program includes 16 weekly sessions, followed by 8 monthly sessions. To qualify for the program, participants must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI ≥25) and at risk for developing type 2diabetes or diagnosed with prediabetes. The goals of the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is to reduce body weight by 7% and increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week. For more information, please contact Eileen Farmer at 203-269-4497 x24.
The YMCA and LIVESTRONG have joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research -based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. This 12-week small group exercise program is offered FREE. To find out more, please contact Intake Advisor Eileen Farmer, Coordinator of Community Initiatives at 203-269-4497 x24.

Our annual Community Support Campaign ensures that no one is turned away because of the inability to pay. Each year, the Wallingford Family YMCA provides financial assistance to thousands of local youth and families. As a non-profit organization, the Y relies on contributions from members and other friends to promote the healthy development of all regardless of their financial means. 100% of each contributed dollar goes to subsidize the cost of programs for children, families and seniors and to give financial assistance to those who need it .

Activate Wallingford
Volunteers are the heart and soul of any YMCA. The time and talent contributed by the men and women who volunteer at the Wallingford Family YMCA enable us to meet the needs of the many people we serve. Play and mentor kids! Help raise funds during our Community Support Campaign. Dive into helping needy families and elders. Work with seniors on improving health and peace of mind. Help guide runners during our Fishbein Road Race. We welcome anyone who wants to help with helping people. We've got something for everyone interested in volunteering. We may have specific needs at any time, but we are always happy to speak with you about volunteering ideas. We are so grateful for the work of students, graduate students, seniors, stay-athome moms, people in transition as well as professionals in any field. Stop by the Welcome Center to pick up an application today or contact Debbie Chappell.
Through Pioneering Healthier Communities, the YMCA serves as “convenors,” bringing together high-level representatives from the government, non-profit, and private sectors to drive meaningful change in each of their communities. PHC focuses on collaborative engagement with community leaders, how environments influence health and well-being, and the role that public policy plays in sustaining change. Our mission is to activate & promote healthy living to improve the overall quality of life for Wallingford. Activate Wallingford strives to enhance the importance of a healthy lifestyle, build relationships within communities by focusing on the leading health issues facing this country, strengthening the capacity for coalition building in communities, attracting a new set of volunteers to the effort to build a healthy community and increase the community's ability to promote policy and environmental changes that encourage and support healthy living. This is NOT an initiative to build new programs and services for the community. However, programs and funding can resonate from this initiative. The goal is to change our existing "epidemic" through public policy, which will result in environmental change!

Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses including the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford who believe in our purpose. They contribute generously to our Community Support Campaign, Road Race, and various programs investing in your families. These funds are distributed on a sliding scale to families with a documented need in our community. Subject to available YMCA resources, our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. For more information contact Chris Kingston at 203-269-4497 x13. Applications can be found at www.wallingfordymca.org or you can pick one up at the YMCA Welcome Center.
WALLINGFORD YMCA HERITAGE SOCIETY In the 69 years since the Wallingford Family YMCA was founded in our community, thousands of our community members have personally benefitted from the Y. The YMCA Board of Directors has created an endowment fund and Heritage Society honoring those who have made a commitment to provide for the future impact of our YMCA. Heritage Society members, by their current or planned gift, ensure that our mission and our values endure, and that YMCA programs will positively impact our community for generations to come. We hope you will give serious consideration to joining our Heritage Society, to make certain that the Y will continue to make a strong impact in the lives of members of the Wallingford community for generations to come. If you would like more information regarding the YMCA’s Endowment Fund and the Heritage Society, please contact Sean Doherty, Executive Director at sdoherty@wallingfordymca.org or 203-269-4497 x29.
