UNITE PLAY CAMP WALLINGFORD FAMILY YMCA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT
A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS Dear YMCA Community, Since 1944, the Wallingford Family YMCA has been strengthening the foundations of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. As a cause driven, charitable organization, we seek to address community needs through the three core focus areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The year 2017 can be summarized by the development and strengthening the foundation of our organization. Even through the challenges of reduced state funding, our financial position remains strong as we continue to build cash reserves, reduce debt and invest in our infrastructure. The YMCA is addressing communities needs such as; child and adult obesity, water safety, program access for low to moderate income families, teen programming for at risk youth as well as providing a place for families to spend quality time together through their busy daily schedules. The most exciting development this past year was the approval of a Capital Development plan. After several years of planning and thoughtful deliberation, including membership and community engagement, the Board of Directors approved a strategic direction for a dual branch service delivery model for the Greater Wallingford Community. “Healthy Communities, a Capital Campaign to expand and revitalize the Wallingford Family YMCA has officially begun! This campaign plan will enable us to strengthen community life by providing greater access and opportunities for everyone. On behalf of the Board of Directors and YMCA staff, we thank you for your continued support and dedication to our cause driven work. Wishing you a healthy and peaceful year,
Sean Doherty Executive Director
Joshua Wyatt YMCA Board Chair
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT OUR MISSION As a charitable organization, our mission is to strengthen the foundation of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body. We aim to be an effective resource and influential community partner by building meaningful, caring relationships and promoting healthy, productive lifestyles for generations.
OUR GOALS Here in our greater Wallingford community, we’ve been committed to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities for 73 years and are determined to keep doing it for at least 73 more. Everyday, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, background, or income, feels welcome and has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive here at the Wallingford Family YMCA. We’re committed to having a greater impact on the overall well-being of the community by seeking collaboration, inspiring trust and heightening awareness to foster support & sustain youth development, healthy living and social responsibility here Wallingford.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
BY THE #S
All kids deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. We believe in the potential of youth and teens and see every interaction as an opportunity for learning and youth development, grounded in our YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. From cradle to career, the Y provides all youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life.

Through our early child care at The Learning Community at Choate Rosemary Hall, we provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other. We maintain and strengthen what starts at home, giving all families the support they need to succeed. Our School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE) program is located in all 8 elementary schools and offers safe, fun and engaging care before & after school. Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School (ELMS) provides after school activities and educational enrichment for students from both Wallingford middle schools. Swimming is a life skill and youth swim lessons help children build confidence by floating, putting their faces in the water, kicking, learning arm strokes and more. To increase water safety across Wallingford, every April we hold Safety Around Water Week to help kids learn skills to be safe around water. Children thrive in our youth sports programs, as they learn confidence and teamwork. From Munchkin Soccer to Ballet, there is something at the YMCA to get every kid active, no matter what their interest. Camp Ulbrich had its most successful year yet, with a record number of kids making friends, having fun and experiencing the adventure of a lifetime at camp. With arts & crafts, swim lessons, all-camp competitions and more, Camp Ulbrich always offers campers the opportunity to meet & overcome new exciting challenges. In Upward Bound, students in grades 5-9 grow & develop in a constructive environment with positive role models. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. In doing so, our hope is that they will grow & learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives, becoming better equipped with the life skills needed when faced with everyday challenges. The goal of the Upward Bound program is to create an atmosphere where kids feel safe, valued and free to express themselves.

HEALTHY LIVING
BY THE #S
We help individuals & families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind & body in their daily lives. We provide programs & activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health, for kids, adults, seniors and families. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of building a stronger, healthier Wallingford every day.

Health is more than getting your heart rate up - it’s about building community while you do it. The Y is a place to make friends, network and more. With brand new, state of the art equipment at both branches, we offer personal training, nutritional counseling and a mix of 100+ group exercise classes to suit the needs and fitness levels of everyone in Wallingford. Annual events, such as Scuba Santa and the Easter Egg-stravaganza, give parents & children much needed free family time to bring them closer. LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Fit-to-Go is our response to the growing youth obesity crisis. Elementary & middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition, developed a focused & realistic workout program they could stick with, had tons of fun doing healthy activities, made new friends and felt better about themselves. With Race 4 Chase, we provide kids with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon. They get expert instruction in swimming, cycling, running, strength training and flexibility, and also learn the fundamentals of good nutrition, under the supportive guidance of coaches. Race 4 Chase strives to empower kids to reach their full potential. It brings together kids from all different backgrounds and educates them on how to adopt a healthy lifestyle, coaches them to develop a foundation of athletic skills, and inspires them to aim high in sports and in life. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program empowers adults with prediabetes lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
BY THE #S
We know that when we work together, we move individuals, families and communities forward. The Y responds to Wallingford’s most pressing needs by developing innovative, community-based solutions to help those in need to reach their full potential. We are also committed to inspiring a spirit of service by uniting individuals from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change.
Over
$200,000 in direct assistance to youth, adults, seniors & families of the Wallingford community
Almost
Everything we do at the Y does is in service to make ourselves and our community better. From athletics, to education, health services and safe spaces, we fill the gaps where society falls short because we believe everyone deserves the chance to thrive. In 2017, we launched our Togetherhood community service program that brings together people from all backgrounds to strengthen the spirit of community in Wallingford. Through our Community Support Campaign, we continue to raise funds for our Membership for All financial assistance program that ensures our doors are open to all to who need us the most. We are proud of our heritage and commitment to make our character-building, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. Through Membership for All, these funds are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay.
With Healthy Wallingford 2020, we help advocate & promote healthy living to improve the overall quality of life for Wallingford. We strive to enhance the importance of a healthy lifestyle, build relationships by focusing on the leading health issues facing this country, strengthen the capacity for coalition building and increase the community's ability to promote policy & environmental changes that encourage healthy living. Through our free programs like LiveSTRONG at the Y, Fit to Go, Upward Bound, Safety Around Water Week, and Race 4 Chase, in addition to a variety of free workshops & more, we address the needs of the Wallingford community.
