A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS Dear YMCA Friends, Following a year of growth and accomplishments, the Wallingford Family YMCA began 2020 with excitement, momentum and record impact. We launched our Healthy Communities Capital Campaign, a fundraising drive to upgrade, enhance and expand our facilities and programs, that would impact the community for decades. Then, the news of a highly contagious virus spreading across the world hit us all. The Wallingford Family YMCA and all of its programs and services, for the first time ever in its 76 year history of serving the community, was shutdown for close to 100 days. Yet, our YMCA staff, volunteers, members, community and donors rallied like never before! We conducted food drives, blood drives, provided a community library on the porch of the Rotary/ YMCA Teen Center, made over 3,000 calls to check-in on our senior members, provided letters of kindness to the residents of Masonicare, Gaylord and the community. And then, when we were allowed to resume programming, with the safest and healthiest restrictions, we were able to provide 228 youth a safe and enjoyable summer camp experience, provide 40 youth to continue to swim like Dolphins, conduct a safe, modified road race for the community and partner with our friends from Masonicare to take over operations of their Day Care center and re-establish a YMCA west side program site for Early Childhood. While the pandemic is far from being over, what it has showed is our continued pledge to the YMCA membership and community, which is that we “commit to building greater impact on the overall well-being of the community by seeking collaboration, inspiring trust and strengthening awareness to foster support and sustainability of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility”. In the face of a worldwide pandemic, our organization applauds the perseverance, compassion, creativity and resilience of our staff, board of directors, membership and community partners as we never lost sight of what matters most, our mission. Stay safe and healthy,

Sean Doherty Executive Director

Courtney Grimm YMCA Board Chair

THE YMCA IN 2020 The graph on the right represents the thousands of individuals served when the Wallingford Family YMCA is able to operate at our full capacity. Sadly, it also shows how much was lost by our need to close in March. When we had to close our doors in March 2020, we made a commitment to continue carrying out our mission to the best of our ability throughout the crisis. As you can see, although the numbers are smaller, we found ways to serve, even when our doors were closed. We continued down this path since reopening in June 2020, reimagining our operations during a period of ongoing uncertainty. Through the philanthropic support of hundreds of kind & caring members, corporations and friends, we persevered and look forward to being of service to the greater Wallingford community for years to come. SINCE MARCH, WE...

COMMUNITY SUPPORT CAMPAIGN Everything we do at the Y is in service to make our community better. We fill the gaps where society falls short because we believe everyone deserves the chance to thrive. Through our Community Support Campaign, we raise funds to ensure our doors are open to all to who need us the most. We are committed to making our character-building, family-enriching programs available to all, regardless of financial means. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay.

Every dollar donated has a lasting impact on the people right here in our community: From newborns at both of our YMCA Learning Community centers to 8th graders in Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School, our child care programs provide youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life. We provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other. Upward Bound helps students in grades 4-12 grow & develop in a constructive environment with positive role models. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. The goal of Upward Bound is to develop social skills, analytical thinking and self-esteem by creating an atmosphere where youth & teens feel safe, valued and free to express themselves. With Membership for All, funds from the Community Support Campaign are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community. Every summer, children from ages 4 to 15 build character, form lifelong friendships and experience the adventure of a lifetime at Camp Ulbrich. With arts & crafts, swim lessons, all-camp competitions and more, Camp Ulbrich always offers campers the opportunity to meet & overcome new exciting challenges. In Fit to Go, elementary & middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition, developed a focused & realistic workout program they could stick with, had tons of fun doing healthy activities, made new friends and felt better about themselves. Race 4 Chase provide kids with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon and empowers them to reach their full potential. It brings together kids from all different backgrounds and educates them on how to adopt a healthy lifestyle, coaches them to develop a foundation of athletic skills, and inspires them to aim high in sports and in life. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.
