A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS What an exciting year 2013 was for the Wallingford Family YMCA! Focused on strengthening the foundations of our community, we served & reached more individuals than ever before. And, it was the support from individuals, businesses & community-minded organizations that made it all possible. While it is always exciting to open a new Y facility, it is never about the buildings: it’s about the people. It is our programs & services that fortify the Wallingford community: Adults turn to the Y for the support they need to help achieve their wellness goals; Families turn to the Y for a nurturing & safe environment for their children to learn & grow; Youth turn to the Y to become engaged in their community by making friends & supporting others. Throughout the year, we celebrated many accomplishments: the opening of the West Side Branch, the expansion of our relationship with Choate Rosemary Hall by managing the Wall Family Fitness Center, and perhaps most importantly, the development of our new Strategic Plan. Our Community Leaders Forum brought all facets of Wallingford together to discuss as a team how the Y can help address community needs. Unfortunately, we also had a major setback with the flooding of our new West Side branch in the early fall. But the staff, board & volunteers persevered to rebuild the damage to serve more members than ever before. After 69 years, our work is still not complete. We look forward to 2014 and the opportunity to chart a course for facility expansion & improvements that will enable us to be responsive to our community’s needs! It’s time to get excited about the plans for the NEW Wallingford Family YMCA!
Patty Dyer-Powers Chairwoman of the Board
Sean Doherty Executive Director 2
The Y is the largest child care provider in Wallingford, caring for over 2,695 children from 8 weeks to 13 years old. With 2 child care centers, wrap-around care for Kindergarteners, programs at all 8 elementary schools and Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School, we make sure that every child has a safe environment to learn, grow & thrive.
All Day Kindergarten proudly supplies academic enrichment in a nurturing & low-ratio setting to a full classroom 19 students each day at the KinderHouse.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child & teen
1,448 children thrive in our youth swim, sports & play programs, as they learn confidence, teamwork and life-saving skills. From Munchkin Soccer to Ballet, there is something at the YMCA to get every kid active, no matter what their interest. Swimmers start in SKIP, learning to float in the water with their parents, becoming Pikes, Eels, Flying Fish and sometimes even Dolphins. The Wallingford Dolphins Swim Team were the 2013 Yankee Cluster Summer Champions for the 2nd year in a row.
Camp Ulbrich had its most successful year yet, with 1,446 kids making friends, having fun and experiencing the adventure of a lifetime at camp. With arts & crafts, swim lessons, all-camp competitions and more, Camp Ulbrich always offers campers the opportunity to meet & overcome new exciting challenges.
4
Annual events, such as Scuba Santa and the Easter Egg-stravaganza, give parents & children much needed free family time to bring them closer together.
Between our East & West Side branches, there are over 100 group exercise classes available. No matter one’s age or fitness level, there is a class for anyone.
HEALTHY LIVING Improving Wallingford’s health & well-being
Health, well-being & fitness is more than just making sure you run on the treadmill every day. We empower people to maintain or improve their health & strength through personal training and our mission-driven programs like LIVESTRONG at the YMCA and Fit-to-Go. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offered 58 people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Supported by the United Way of Meriden/ Wallingford, the Bank of America Foundation and the Town of Wallingford Department of Public Health, Fit-to-Go is our response to the growing youth obesity crisis. In 2013, 117 middle-school youth learned about healthy living & nutrition, developed a focused & realistic workout program they could stick with, had tons of fun doing healthy activities, made new friends and felt better about themselves.
COMING IN 2014: The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program 6
Be Water Safe Week provided swimming lessons and water safety skills for 27 children ages 3-8 at a minimal cost to ensure the safety of Wallingford’s youth.
Upward Bound is designed to help at-risk youth in grades six through eight grow & develop in an environment with positive role models. 45 students were challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities and positive self-expression. Upward Bound is supported by the United Way of Meriden/Wallingford, Rotary Foundation and the Liberty Bank Foundation.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
The mission of Activate Wallingford is to advocate & promote healthy living to improve the overall quality of life for Wallingford. We strive to enhance the importance of a healthy lifestyle, build relationships by focusing on the leading health issues facing this country, strengthen the capacity for coalition building and increase the community's ability to promote policy & environmental changes that encourage healthy living. 100 people took part in the Activate Wallingford walk to support changing our existing "epidemic" through public policy, resulting in environmental change.
We are proud of our heritage and commitment to make our character -building, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. Through Membership for All, these funds were distributed on a sliding scale to 1,636 people with a documented need in our community. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. 8
As Wallingford grows, evolves and becomes even more vibrant - so must the YMCA. So the big question is: What can we do to continue being an effective resource & influential partner of the community
?
Secure the investment needed for major capital improvements
Communicate the Y’s opportunity for greater impact as a non-profit, cause-driven organization
Identify and develop staff and volunteers who will share and advocate our core values to community leaders
Expand and deepen collaborative relationships that provide opportunities for individuals and families to develop healthier lifestyles
Continuously evaluate, create & enhance our program offerings to increase impact
THE FUTURE OF OUR Y
Demonstrate fiscal responsibility as we further our mission and grow as an organization
OUR 5 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN
Led by our Board of Directors and Leadership staff, we will raise $7.5 million for capital expansion and improvements
Overall contributions will increase to 15% of our annual budget primarily on the strength of the Community Support Campaign
We will target underserved areas in the community and develop programming opportunities in partnership with other organizations
Overall membership will achieve and sustain 80% retention rate
We will focus efforts of program development and innovation towards the epidemic of both childhood and adult obesity - Expand our current programs to serve more Wallingford youth - Launch the Diabetes Prevention Program for adults
The Wallingford Family YMCA is, and always will be, dedicated to strengthening the foundations of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body. 10
