Between many of the secrets that airlines will never tell you, one of them is the possibility to fly in business or first class even if you haven't paid for it. The first thing I want to make clear is that this method will only work if the conditions are the adequate, and in no way I can make sure that this is a proven method in any situation. Some airlines will work like this, some others not, but the chance is always there and you lose nothing to give it a try. Airlines are not perfect. They suffer from many different problems due to marketing strategies, risk analysis that makes them always try to cover their shoulders, etc. One common practice nowadays, something that is also very usual in hotels (and I can prove that, as I have lived this situations in the working environment and also as a customer), is the overbooking of flights. Overbooking happens for a very obvious reason. Hotels, and in this case airlines, have very accurate statistics on how much of the people that have booked a flight will cancel leaving the places empty. To protect themselves from the problem of empty seats, which is what makes them lose more money, they do not plan for the whole amount of places that a plane have, but they plan for some more extra places, relying that statistics will happen and those places will get canceled. Unfortunately, or fortunately for you in this case, statistics do not always happen, and variability can be tremendously high. What happens then when an aircraft is ready to depart and there is a problem of overbooking? Normally two things can happen: one of them, is that the person that has not been able to take his flight, needs to be give his money back or, if possible, change this person to another flight. This is a bad option for any airline, it damages the customer relations and it creates an angry client. The other option is the one that interests us, and it is to let one of the passengers in economy class to move to business or first class, where supposedly a place can be available. Who is going to get this place? In one side, it will be for the one who asks for it, the quickest one. But to really qualify before anybody for this position, there are some things that can be done, specially related to joining the frequent flying programs that many airlines offer. From there, using some strategies, you can make this happen when the opportunity comes to your hands. There is a lot of information out there on this topic and this could give place to a tremendously long article, but to help in my travel planning business I have learned from some books that I always recommend. They give step-by-step guidance on how to improve your chances of being the first to get this opportunities.
