Special Events 34th Annual Paper Boat Race Each year, staff representatives from each Recreation Summer Camp (Tenderfoot, Little Walnut, Clever Creek, Day Camp, Sports Camp, Camp Community Arts, Specialized Recreation Camp and the pool lifeguards) compete in a cardboard boat race across the lap pool. Themed boats are made of masking tape, cardboard, and white glue. Each boat is large enough to carry a camp leader across the pool and back. Awards are given both to the race winner and to the camp with the most creative theme. Campers from afternoon camps attend the race during camp hours. Preschool and Half Day campers are encouraged to attend the event with their parents or guardians to participate in the boat parade and support their counselors in the cheering section. Specialized Recreation Inclusion Summer Camp
Specialized Recreation Inclusion Day Camp Week 1
New this year, in partnership with Walnut Creek Day Camp, we are offering 8 camper “inclusion spaces” with the goal of developing positive social relationships.
$410 before 4/1
Theme: Superhero Field Trip: Discovery Kingdom plus lunch
Camp designed specifically for youth who have special needs, are high functioning and in a mainstream school program during the school year but could use a little extra assistance in a large group setting. This will allow youth, with and without disabilities, to participate equally in activities and see the similarities in one another in a fun environment outside of school. Camp activities will coincide alongside the traditional Walnut Creek Day Camp activities such as crafts, games, swimming and other themed activities. Camp hours are 9:00am-4:30pm. However, if your child needs to be picked up early that is OK with the exception of field trip day, which needs to be arranged prior to the day of the trip. Ratio of 1 dedicated specialized recreation staff to every 2.5 participants with special needs will be provided. While every effort will be made to accommodate all children’s adaptive needs, if there is a safety concern or extreme behavioral issues, parent may be called to come and pick up their child. Child may attend camp with their own aide, provided prior approval by Walnut Creek Recreation. Adaptive swim lessons use carefully designed strategies to teach children with special needs. Lessons are created for, but not limited to, those with behavioral, communication, or sensory challenges. Instruction emphasizes adapted teaching strategies to accommodate individual abilities, needs, and goals. Class sizes are limited to address the needs of our participants and are on a first come-first serve basis. An intake form will be sent to you upon registration that needs to be completed prior to the first lesson to ensure swim success.
