FALL

2020

say hi to Diego! Each quarter we’ll be featuring one of our dedicated Arts + Rec staff! If you’ve been to Clarke Swim Center, chances are you have seen Diego Rivera around. He is a pool manager and his many responsibilities include lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, working the front office, and managing on deck. Diego made his lifelong passion for swimming his part-time job when he joined the Arts + Rec department four years ago. After taking swim lessons at an early age, Diego was part of swim teams growing up and even today swims for the Walnut Creek Masters, a year-round swim program for adults which was founded in 1976. “I hope that I can show kids how much fun swimming is, whether by teaching them swim lessons or guarding them while they play during rec swim”, he says with a smile. He goes on to say, “What I love most about working with Walnut Creek Arts + Rec is all the amazing people I get to work with. Being able to work with people who make you laugh and smile every day makes it really easy for me to come into work”. Apart from working at the pool, Diego is a fulltime student studying mechanical engineering. His main hobbies are swimming and lifting weights. Next time you’re at Clarke Swim Center, make sure to say hi to Diego!

Community Arts Foundation

President’s Message At the time of writing this, the world is still upside down as the City, State, Country and World emerge from staying at home and determining the long-term impacts of COVID. One thing is for sure… the arts, whether it be enjoying movies, television, music, literature or for some actually creating, arts provide a respite from worrying about what we can’t control. As we feel safer and emerge from our homes, for many, the arts will be an important part of the healing process. We know that while many things are uncertain about the coming year, one thing we can count on as a Foundation is that there will be an even greater need for scholarships for members of our community. We hope that if you are able, you will be part of the recovery for Walnut Creek by providing the gift of the arts to members of our community. We are all in this together! Glynnis E. Cowdery, President

A huge thank you to the QUEST Foundation for the $35,000 matching grant to provide scholarships for Community Arts students.

Community Arts Foundation

Despite the Pandemic, Support for the Arts Remains Strong When the shelter in place order hit Contra Costa County in mid-March, its impact was felt deeply, especially amongst the teaching artists and instructors in the Arts and Recreation Department. All of the spring classes at Center for Community were cancelled, resulting in a loss of contracts for every instructor scheduled that quarter. For many, these contracts are a main source of income. With the support of the CAF, Community Arts and Recreation offered an option for students to donate their spring class refunds, in part or in full, to the Foundation. The response was overwhelming, over $37,000 was raised! The Foundation distributed 100% of the donations to the impacted teaching artists and instructors. “It’s enormously helpful. Beyond the financial support, the emotional support and faith in community has been incredible!” said teaching artist, Darren Cockrell. The tremendous amount of support received made us proud to continue do the work we do and provide Arts for All! Thank you!

Every donation makes a difference! As the Foundation and the Center look towards the future, we anticipate an increase of financial aid requests from participants. We understand how important the arts are to Walnut Creek and are committed to continue to provide funding for arts scholarships for Community Arts participants whether they take place in person or online. To support the Community Arts Foundation, please visit www.commartsfoundation.org. Every donation makes a difference!
