Behind the Scenes

The magic of Arts + Recreation doesn’t happen spontaneously. There are many hours of training, planning and implementation that go into every detail of every program so that community members and regional visitors can experience high quality, fun and impactful events in Walnut Creek. Enjoy these behind-the-scenes photos from our divisions.

Aquatics

Lifeguards practice emergency skills because they are responsible for the safety and well-being of individuals at swimming pools and other aquatic settings. In the event of an emergency such as a drowning, cardiac arrest, or other life-threatening situation, lifeguards must be prepared to act quickly and effectively to prevent injury or loss of life. Regular practice of emergency skills such as CPR, rescue techniques, and first aid ensures that lifeguards are able to respond to emergencies with confidence and skill.

Center for Community Arts

Center for Community Art’s Ceramics Studio offers a number of ceramics classes for community members. Some classes include a special raku firing at the end of the quarter, a process in which ceramic pieces are heated quickly using a low-fire method. These pieces are taken out of the raku kiln while still glowing hot and placed in materials such as sawdust or newspaper. The outcome is a beautiful range of unpredictable colors within the glaze due to the lack of oxygen in this process. In this photo, teaching artist, Chris Fortin, leads a raku firing for his class.

Recreation & Social Services

The staffing team located at Civic Park Community Center work a diverse variety of programs such as hosting family special events, tabling at Job Fairs, running the Specialized Recreation and Senior social services programs as well as most of the city’s contracted afterschool, adult and summer camp programs. See the Easter Bunny visiting Clarke Swim Center to spread some springtime cheer and Customer Service Central representatives Dominik and Ben table at a Job Fair at Diablo Valley College to encourage summer recruitment. Also featured are staff who attended a 3 day statewide Conference in San Diego hosted by the California Parks and Recreation Society, the professional organization we support in an effort to stay current on industry trends and best practices.

Center for Community Arts at Bedford Gallery

Partnering across divisions, staff from Center for Community Arts welcome teaching artists, the Clay Arts Guild and Community Arts Foundation board members to Bedford Gallery’s exhibition, Erin Fong: The Sensation of Color in late winter. The event was hosted as a thank you to individuals who, through their voluntary service and professional commitment to the arts in Walnut Creek, help spread access to arts education in the community as well as ensure there are a plethora of exceptional, diverse arts programs available to the community.

Bedford Gallery

Bedford Gallery is dedicated to providing opportunities to learn about visual arts through exhibitions and programs that are varied, accessible, challenging and educational. Hosting four shows per year, every install has unique components that require staff to think creatively to ensure a seamless experience for visitors. Here, gallery staff is configuring (with lots of tools!) 6 monitors that each play a different film sequence from Andy Warhol’s famous Screen Tests in the About Face exhibition. See it now through June 25!

Summer Camp!

No matter which Walnut Creek Summer Camp you attend, each group of staff members attend a rigorous week of training in the first week of June. Included with team building activities, camp staff are certified in CPR/FA, receive a certificate in Mandated Reporter Training and Harassment Prevention. During this week, camp staff also plan out weekly activities, games and crafts to ensure that your child has a summer of fun to remember!

Meet the faces behind the programs

IF YOU COULD BE A COLOR, WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?

Blue - Reminds me of the limitless possibilities we have in this life, like the vast blue sky and the brilliant blue ocean.

IF YOU COULD BE A SHAPE, WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?

Lately as I age, I feel more round than anything else, but I love stars. So I would be a star shape.

TELL US ABOUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF.

Being a mom to my two adorable boys who are 15 and 12!

Rathna Ramakrishnan

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING? 23 Years

WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR PROGRAM OR WHAT DISCIPLINES DO YOU TEACH?

“BrainVyne” LEGO Technic, LEGO Robotics and Money 101Financial Literacy Camps

WHO INSPIRED YOU GROWING UP AND WHY?

My hardworking parents and my excellent teachers. I grew up in India where educating girls was not a priority. My fierce mother made sure my sisters and I attended a stellar school and became fluent in English. This is why we offer a Girl Power Robotics Camp to encourage more girls to get involved in STEM.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TEACHING IN WALNUT CREEK?

This is our 10th year in business in the Bay Area and we serve 25 cities throughout the Bay Area. However this is our first year collaborating with Walnut Creek Rec. and we are very excited to bring our fantastic LEGO Curriculum designed by a LEGO Master builder to the students in Walnut Creek.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT OR MOMENT WHEN TEACHING?

Seeing a student's eyes light up when they visualize simple engineering concepts or fundamentals of coding, and spend the week at camp, building and creating using their imagination

WHAT IS THE BEST THING A STUDENT HAS EVER TOLD YOU?

How they can't wait to come back to another week of our LEGO Camp!

WHY DO YOU TEACH WHAT YOU DO?

Passionate about enrichment through entertainment for kids. What better way to do it than with LEGO, the most versatile of all toys!, When students point out that the "Vyne" in BrainVyne is not spelled correctly! Yeah, the typo is intentional, makes us memorable!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TEACHING?

Creating fun curriculum that makes learning more like play. If you could learn something new, what would it be? And why?

I am a fan of all new tech - apps, software that simplifies lives. I love being a life long learner.

Wendy Soneson

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING?

50 years

WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR PROGRAM OR WHAT DISCIPLINES DO YOU TEACH?

Watercolor

WHO INSPIRED YOU GROWING UP & WHY?

I wanted to teach and paint from age 4. Inspired by 10 aunts and uncles in the business.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TEACHING IN WALNUT CREEK?

The enthusiasm of the students.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT OR MOMENT WHEN TEACHING?

When all the students are absorbed in their work.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING A STUDENT HAS EVER TOLD YOU?

“This is the best class I have ever taken.”

WHY DO YOU TEACH WHAT YOU DO?

I want all people to connect to their creative self.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AS AN INSTRUCTOR?

End of every semester when students have become friends and fellow artists. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TEACHING?

When I see the students have listened to the lesson and done the work.

IF YOU COULD LEARN SOMETHING NEW, WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

Glassblowing.

IF YOU COULD BE A COLOR, WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?

Black because it is a can for color.

IF YOU COULD BE A SHAPE, WHAT WOULD IT BE & WHY?

I would be irregular just like nature as it’s always changing. TELL US ABOUT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF.

Teaching students to paint.

TEEN PROGRAMS PROMOTE:

CREATIVE EXPRESSION: Teen Art programs provide a safe space for teenagers to express themselves creatively through different art forms which helps develop confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of identity.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Art programs help teenagers develop skills in different art forms such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and more. These skills can be useful for personal growth, college preparedness, and career development.

COMMUNITY BUILDING: Art programs bring together teenagers from different backgrounds and interests, helping to build a sense of community and collaboration.

MENTAL HEALTH: Engaging in creative activities has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health by reducing stress and anxiety.

CULTURAL ENRICHMENT: Art programs expose teenagers to different cultures and art forms, expanding their horizons and broadening their perspectives.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME GOALS:

SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Our program aims to help students develop their skills in different art forms such as painting, drawing, and sculpture. By working side-by-side with teaching artists, students will gain hands-on experience and learn techniques that they can apply to their own work.

PORTFOLIO BUILDING: Our program will provide students with the opportunity to create individual works of art that can be added to their portfolio. By the end of the program, students will have a collection of high-quality pieces that showcase their skills and creativity perfect for college applications.

COLLABORATION: Our program encourages collaboration and teamwork by providing opportunities for students to work on collaborative works, public artwork, or a community impact project. This will allow students to learn how to work together towards a common goal and develop their communication and leadership skills.

NETWORKING: Our program aims to build connections within the artistic community by providing opportunities for students to meet and network with professional artists and other like-minded students. This will help students develop a sense of community and support as they pursue their artistic goals.

PERSONAL GROWTH: Our program recognizes the importance of creative expression for personal growth. By providing a safe and supportive environment for students to explore their creativity, we aim to help students develop confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of identity."The purpose of arts education is not to produce more artists, though that is a byproduct. The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society." -Dana
